China to challenge US for medal bragging rights amid doping row

PARIS — China arrives at the Paris Olympics expecting the torrent of gold medals that has become common for the Asian sporting powerhouse in recent decades but with the shadow of a doping row hanging over the delegation.

The team could win as many as 34 golds and 86 total medals in Paris, according to Nielsen’s Gracenote projections, and could pose a threat to American hopes of topping the table for the fourth straight Summer Games.

China brought 405 athletes to compete in 236 events in Paris, their largest for a Summer Olympics outside the country.

The country has won a total of 263 gold medals since shooter Xu Haifeng won the first at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, when China was finally welcomed into the Summer Games fold.

Diving, shooting, swimming, table tennis, artistic gymnastics and badminton are the key medal-winning sports but Gracenote predicts top contenders in 20 other sports.

Gracenote uses a statistics model based on available results data from key global and continental competitions since the previous Games in Tokyo.

China’s Olympic ambitions, however, have been overshadowed by a doping row that implicated 23 of its swimmers, many of whom are competing in Paris.

The 23 swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine (TMZ), a medication that increases blood flow to the heart in competitions before the Tokyo Olympics, but were later cleared by a Chinese investigation, which said they were inadvertently exposed to the drug through contamination.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) did not find any wrongdoing in its own investigation of the cases, triggering a US investigation and wider suspicions from swimmers in other countries.

China has repeatedly denied the doping allegations. A spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, when asked about the US investigation into the doping scandal at a regular briefing on July 10, said China trusts the conclusion reached by the independent Swiss prosecutor and supports WADA’s governance.

“This non-existent case that the US keeps selling and the attacks it hurls at the international organization are all about degrading fine Chinese athletes and obstructing their participation in the Paris Olympics,” the spokesperson said.

China’s Chef de Mission Gao Zhidan, who is also the sports minister, said at a delegation departure ceremony earlier this month that China would aim to make sure there are zero doping incidents during the Paris Olympics.

The Olympic Games is usually one of China’s top national events, attracting hundreds of millions of viewers at home who hope to celebrate the country’s top performing athletes with great anticipation and patriotism.

The doping row, which comes at a time when China’s relations with the US and EU have been fraught with geopolitical and trade tensions, has chilled the mood of some sports fans back home.

Many on social media are also ridiculing Paris for offering no air-conditioners and very basic food options in the Olympic Village, which the city did to protect the environment.

“If Paris had consulted with each delegation and see who might need what, it would have been better,” said Hu Xijin, the former chief editor of local paper Global Times, on Weibo. “But Paris is a bit ‘haughty’ — ‘I’m the host therefore I should play by my rules’… Not only will athletes not have air conditioners, they will also sleep in cardboard beds and eat mostly vegetarian food cos I want the Olympics to be a big lesson for green living’,” Hu said. — Reuters

Solar Spikers hope to ride wave of massive upset

EXCEPT probably for Capital1 Solar owners Milka and Mandy Romero and battle-scarred coach Roger Gorayeb himself, nobody really believed that the Solar Spikers would make a dent in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL)  Reinforced Conference.

On a stormy but memorable Tuesday night at the PhilSports Arena, Mr. Gorayeb and his team silenced the doubters after they pulled off perhaps the biggest victory in their brief history as a PVL franchise.

A mammoth 26-24, 25-20, 25-18 shocker over Petro Gazz, the defending champion and two-time Reinforced Conference titlist, gave Capital1 not just its first victory this conference but also earned it the respect it has long sought.

“Who would have thought na mai-i-straight sets namin, they’re always looking at us as a low-level team, tapos maka-straight sets kami to a more experienced team,” said an emotional Mr. Gorayeb.

Malaking bagay sa amin iyon, morale-booster sa mga bata iyon,” he added.

The league suspended play Wednesday due to inclement weather.

Mr. Gorayeb credited rock-solid defense and a lethal weapon straight from Russia — Marina Tushova — for the victory.

Ang lakas ng depensa namin, maski ako nagulat eh. Last time, we were struggling sa counter-attack. Ngayon hindi kami nag-struggle kaya masaya ako,” said Mr. Gorayeb, whose team succumbed to Akari, 25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14, in its first outing Thursday.

Si Marina (Tushova) sinapian, birthday yata nito. Ang ganda nilaro niya,” he added referring to the crisp-hitting import’s masterful 24-point performance.

The early success was made more special since the team was only formed six months ago when the Romero sisters picked Mr. Gorayeb to mentor the team. — Joey Villar

Severino tied for lead in Armenia chess tournament for the physically disabled

GR STOCKS-UNSPLASH

SANDER SEVERINO knew the road back to the top of the mountain of chess for the physically disabled isn’t easy.

Step by step and brick by brick, the former world champion from Silay City, Negros Occidental is getting there though.

Drawing strength from his opening savvy and endgame brilliance, the 39-year-old Mr. Severino bested feisty Croatian Domagoj Glazar in a marathon 90-move win late Tuesday that kept him in the lead after five rounds of the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Championship in Gyumri, Armenia.

The many-time ASEAN and Asian Para Games gold winner was accompanied by fellow FIDE Master Marcin Molenda of Poland, a winner over former IPCA titlist Andrei Obudchuk of Russia, with 4.5 points apiece. Mr. Severino and Mr. Molenda were battling each other in the sixth round of this nine-round, 52-player meet at the deadline, with the wheelchair-bound Philippine bet, who has muscle dystrophy, expected to throw caution to wind for that crucial victory.

Another win should keep Mr. Severino in the hunt for that second crown in this same tournament he won four years ago when it adopted a rapid and online format due to the pandemic.

Close behind were countrymen James Infiesto, who has 3.5 points, and Henry Lopez, who has three points.

The country also fielded a women’s team of four — Cheryl Angot (2), Cheyzer Mendoza (1.5), Jean Lee-Nacita (1.5) and Fe Mangayayam (1) — with support from the Philippine Sports Commission. — Joey Villar

Women set to grab spotlight for Team USA in Paris games

PARIS — American women from Simone Biles to Katie Ledecky and Sha’Carri Richardson will dominate the spotlight in Paris as the explosion in popularity of women’s sports in the US makes its way to the Olympic stage, experts said.

Those athletes are among the women featured prominently in ads for the Games on NBC, as female fans are being drawn to international sport’s biggest event like never before.

Of those seeking out Olympic news online in the US, 56% are women while 44% are men, according to David Steinberg, Chief Executive Officer of marketing technology company Zeta Global. That could help reverse a dismal trend for broadcasters, after US viewership for the COVID-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021 plunged to about half the audience of the London Games in 2012.

Caitlin Clark’s brilliance this year led the women’s college basketball tournament to eclipse the men’s in TV ratings for the first time, dominating headlines. “It’s like a 100-year overnight success story,” Mr. Steinberg said. “(Women’s sport) has been around for a very long time but is finally getting its moment.”

NBCUniversal said it would modernize its Olympic coverage for Paris, which includes adding elements of pop culture and bringing in social media influencers to attract more women and younger viewers.

More than half the network’s primetime Olympic coverage will be dedicated to women’s events, the company said. NBCU has also adopted a different strategy to market the Olympics by having celebrities meet athletes, exemplified by R&B singer SZA joining Ms. Biles in the gym in a promotional video.

“What we uncovered through that exercise is there are a huge number of celebrities who are big fans in particular of female athletes, and they love the Olympics,” said Jenny Storms, NBCU’s chief marketing officer for entertainment and sports.

Americans love a winner and the women of Team USA have been leading on that front, earning 66 of the United States’ 113 total medals in Tokyo and winning more medals than the men in Rio and London as well.

Paris marks the fourth consecutive Games to which the US will send more women than men, with 314 female athletes in the team compared with 278 male.

Taking advantage of that pool of talent is another matter. Kate Johnson, a trustee at the Women’s Sports Foundation and Olympic rowing silver medallist in 2004, said that women have not had their stories told properly. “NBC has got to get this right, they need to pick up on the competitive storylines with women’s sports,” said Ms. Johnson.

She pointed to the success of the WNBA this season, where Indiana Fever point guard Ms. Clark’s fierce rivalries with her fellow rookies have driven television ratings sky-high, as evidence that audiences crave raw competition over puff-pieces.

“The cultural zeitgeist has now caught up to the fact that women’s sports are there, it’s amazing. But the truth is the US women’s Olympic team, for example, has won more medals than the men comparatively for years now,” she told Reuters.

“Those stories weren’t getting told that well; this summer I expect that they will… And it’s about freaking time because they’ve always been rock stars.”

One of those rock stars, Laurie Hernandez, who won gold with the US gymnastics team alongside Ms. Biles in Rio in 2016, praised the trailblazers.

“Tennis and soccer paved the way for women’s equality in sports,” said Ms. Hernandez, now a broadcaster with NBC and ambassador for hospitality company On Location. “I’m giddy to know that the coverage is happening.” — Reuters

Who will light Paris Games cauldron? Perec, Zidane among bets

PARIS — The identity of the person who lights the Olympic cauldron on the night of the opening ceremony is one of sport’s best-kept secrets, with less than a dozen people in the know.

Paris 2024 organizing committee president Tony Estanguet said the person who will light the cauldron on Friday was not yet aware they had been selected.

Here are the top five contenders:

MARIE-JOSE PEREC The 56-year-old is widely considered to be France’s best Olympian of all time, with three gold medals across two Games in athletics. Perec, who was born in the overseas region of Guadeloupe, won the 400 metres title at the Barcelona Games in 1992 before achieving the 200-400m double four years later in Atlanta. She bore the torch in her native Guadeloupe but Estanguet said someone who had already carried it could not be ruled out.

OMAR SY The star of The Untouchables, of West African origin, is one of France’s most-beloved personalities. He also stars in the Netflix show Lupin, whose first series is the third-most watched on the platform, with almost 100 million viewers.

ZINEDINE ZIDANE France’s greatest soccer player who helped Les Bleus to their first World Cup title, on home soil in 1998 and to the European title two years later, Zidane, whose parents are from Algeria, hails from the Marseille estates. He was the favorite to bring the Olympic flame to land in Marseille after its boat trip from Greece but eventually was not involved.

THOMAS PESQUET The Frenchman is the most experienced European astronaut with almost 400 days spent in space — and possibly as many spent on TV sets due to his huge popularity in the country.

SURVIVOR(S) FROM THE NOVEMBER 13, 2015 ATTACKS Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo says she decided to support the Olympic bid after Islamist squads killed 130 people in a night of carnage across Paris on Nov. 13, 2015, looking to lift the Parisians’ moods. It would be fitting to see one or several survivors of the attacks light the cauldron on Friday. — Reuters

Harris bashes Trump over ‘fear and hate,’ promises compassion in debut rally

MILWAUKEE — US Vice-President Kamala Harris assailed Donald Trump on Tuesday at her first campaign rally since replacing President Joseph R. Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate, while a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll showed her taking a marginal lead over her Republican rival.

In a 17-minute speech, Ms. Harris aggressively went after Mr. Trump’s vulnerabilities, comparing her background as a former prosecutor to his record as a convicted felon.

Ms. Harris ticked through a list of liberal priorities, saying that if elected she would act to expand abortion access, make it easier for workers to join unions and address gun violence, drawing a sharp contrast with Mr. Trump, the Republican nominee for president in the Nov. 5 election.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” she told a cheering crowd of several thousand at West Allis Central High School in a Milwaukee suburb in Wisconsin, a battleground state with a pivotal role in deciding the election outcome.

“Do we want to live in a country of freedom, compassion and rule of law, or a country of chaos, fear and hate?”

The raucous rally was a notable contrast to the smaller, more subdued events Mr. Biden held, underscoring Democrats’ hope that Ms. Harris, 59, can revive what had been a flagging campaign under Mr. Biden, 81. The audience danced and waved Ms. Harris signs, while chants of “Ka-ma-la!” broke out when she took the stage.

She emphasized her commitment to reproductive rights, an issue that has plagued Republicans since the US Supreme Court — powered by three Trump-appointed justices — eliminated a nationwide right to abortion in 2022.

Ms. Harris led Mr. Trump 44% to 42% among registered voters in the national Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday after Mr. Biden dropped out of the contest on Sunday and endorsed Harris as his successor.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll last week showed Mr. Biden, before he ended his campaign, trailing Mr. Trump by two percentage points.

Both were within the poll’s three-point margin of error. But the results could signal limited movement in Democrats’ direction — and may suggest that Ms. Harris’ elevation to the top of the ticket blunted whatever momentum Mr. Trump hoped to gain from last week’s Republican National Convention, also in Milwaukee.

Mr. Trump and his allies have tried to tether Ms. Harris to some of Mr. Biden’s more unpopular policies, including his administration’s handling of the surge of migrants at the southern border with Mexico.

In a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Mr. Trump expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Harris, noting that her previous presidential run in 2020 did not even survive until the first statewide nominating contest.

Mr. Trump offered to debate Ms. Harris multiple times. Messrs. Trump and Biden had one more debate scheduled on Sept. 10 after their encounter on June 27. Mr. Biden’s poor performance that night led to Democratic calls for him to step aside.

“I want to debate her, and she’ll be no different because they have the same policies,” Mr. Trump said.

A SWIFT RISE
Ms. Harris swiftly consolidated her party’s support after Mr. Biden, 81, abandoned his reelection campaign under pressure from members of his party who worried about his ability to beat Mr. Trump, 78, or to serve for another four-year term.

She wrapped up the nomination on Monday night by winning pledges from a majority of the delegates who at next month’s party convention will determine the nominee, the campaign said.

Her campaign said it had raised $100 million since Sunday.

Most Democratic lawmakers have lined up behind her candidacy, including the party’s leaders in the Senate and House, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, who endorsed Ms. Harris on Tuesday at a joint press conference.

Ms. Harris’ rise dramatically reshapes an election in which many voters were unhappy with their options. As the first Black woman and Asian-American to serve as vice-president, she would make further history as the first woman elected US president.

Wisconsin is among a trio of Rust Belt states, along with Michigan and Pennsylvania, that are critical to Democrats’ chances of defeating Mr. Trump.

Alyssa Wahlberg, 19, chair of the Whitewater College Democrats, said Ms. Harris had reenergized young voters, particularly women who want Ms. Harris to break the ultimate US glass ceiling.

“I talked to my grandmom. We are both excited that she may live to see the first woman president,” said Ms. Wahlberg, who was attending Tuesday’s rally. “It’s taken too long.”  Reuters

Don’t break law and you have nothing to fear, China tells Taiwan staff of multinational firms

BEIJING — Taiwan staff at multinational firms in China have nothing to fear as long as they don’t break the law, the Chinese government said on Wednesday, following new legal guidelines that mandate execution in extreme cases for “diehard” separatists.

China, which views Taiwan as its own territory, issued the new guidelines after President Lai Ching-te took office in May, who Beijing has made no secret of disliking and has called a “separatist.”

Some foreign companies are considering moving Taiwanese employees out of China, as a result, sources have previously told Reuters.

Speaking at a regular news briefing, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, reiterated there was no cause for alarm for most Taiwanese, and directly addressed the issue of those working for foreign firms.

“The majority of Taiwan compatriots, including Taiwanese employees working in multinational companies, can be completely at ease in the mainland, as long as they do not engage in criminal acts,” she said, referring to the new guidelines.

Taiwan’s government raised its travel warning for China after the guidelines were issued, saying people should only go there if absolutely necessary, sparking anger from Beijing.

“Taiwanese people who have visited the mainland know full well there us absolutely no travel risk,” Ms. Zhu said.

“The Democratic Progressive Party authorities’ tactics of intimidating the public cannot bluff or stop them, and will only increase the public’s resentment or, and opposition to, the green terror,” she added, referring to the colors of Taiwan’s ruling party.

China has vowed to go after people it views as Taiwan separatists wherever they may be, although Chinese courts have no jurisdiction in Taiwan or ability to enforce judgements there.

Mr. Lai rejects China’s sovereignty claims, saying only Taiwan’s people can decide their future. He has repeatedly offered talks with Beijing but been rebuffed. — Reuters

DoH shares free teleconsult hotline amid Leptospirosis risk

The Department of Health (DoH) issued a July 24 advisory on leptospirosis, a disease caused by the Leptospira bacterium. It is transmitted through soil or water contaminated with the urine of infected animals, which can then enter the body through breaks in the skin, or through the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Leptospirosis is more common during the rainy season because the bacteria that causes it can thrive in wet environments.

The health department also shared the National Patient Navigation and Referral Center’s free hotline number 1552 (press 2) for those who:

  • waded through possibly contaminated water, mud, or soil;
  • ate or drank possibly contaminated food or water; and/or
  • experience symptoms – such as fever, diarrhea, and chills – after being exposed to floods or contaminated water.

The teleconsultation hotline is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Consult your nearest doctor or health center within 24 hours after wading through floodwaters or touching soil, mud, or dirt after a flood,” said Dr. Albert E. Domingo, the DoH’s officer-in-charge assistant secretary and spokesperson. “Please, please consult for Leptospirosis prophylaxis pagnabaha (if you do end up wading in floodwaters).”

The number of reported cases of Leptospirosis as of July 13 is 1,258. It is 41% lower compared to the same period in 2023, when there were 2,150 cases reported.

“The DoH released and propositioned medicines and WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) logistics for those affected by floods,” said health secretary Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa in his July 24 report to President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.

All DoH hospitals are functioning, according to Dr. Herbosa.

“We have also deployed Health Emergency Response Teams to evaluate the health needs of people in evacuation centers,” he said.

Metro Manila placed under a “State of Calamity”

PHILIPPINE STAR/MIGUEL DE GUZMAN

The Metro Manila Council has declared a “State of Calamity” in the National Capital Region due to massive floods caused by the Typhoon Carina-enhanced Southwest Monsoon.

“Metro Manila is now in a state of Calamity,” Department of Interior and Local Government Benjamin “Benhur” De Castro Abalos announced after the resolution was approved by the members of the council on Wednesday afternoon.

The state of calamity declaration would allow the national government to use its “quick response funds” among affected areas and impose a price freeze on basic commodities.

12 out of 17 Metro Manila mayors have approved a “State of Calamity” resolution, while the mayors of Marikina, Malabon, Las Piñas, Valenzuela, and Parañaque were absent, as their cities are significantly affected.

“My recommendation is to declare a state of calamity, makakatulong po talaga yan sa atin (it will be helpful for us),” Quezon City Mayor, Josefina Tanya Go Belmonte said during a consultation with Metro Manila Council.

During the discussion, some Metro Manila mayors reported on their respective city’s conditions, highlighting the following situations:

  • Pasay – The city has tallied at least 1,800 evacuees.
  • Pateros – As of 10 a.m., all areas in Pateros are affected by flooding, impacting around 3,000 to 3,500 families.
  • Muntinlupa – No major flooding or evacuees have been recorded.
  • Mandaluyong – The city is monitoring evacuation centers as nearly 300 individuals have been evacuated. The city’s main road is inaccessible due to high flood waters.
  • Quezon City – Almost 22,000 individuals, or 7,231 families, have evacuated. All 154 evacuation centers are full, and 80 out of 142 barangays are affected by flooding.
  • Makati City – 100 evacuees have occupied 3 evacuation centers.
  • Navotas – More than 80% of the city is affected by flooding.
