Almost 8,500 MSMEs assisted by DTI-Davao

DTI ROMEO CASTANAGA

ALMOST 8,500 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the Davao Region have received assistance from the government in the first four months of the year, according to a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) official.

For this year we would like to highlight that we have an annual target of 27,000 MSMEs assisted. As of April, we have assisted 8,496 or 31% of the total, with different interventions given,DTI-Davao information officer Jenny Grace M. Mendoza said at the Habi at Kape media forum.

She said the assistance programs vary from free seminars on entrepreneurship, product development training, and developing labels and packaging, among others.

Because we believe that we should not only focus on production but on promotion and marketing. We have several MSMEs in Davao Region who have graduated, meaning they have entered the export market, she said.

MSMEs are enterprises with a capitalization of up to P100 million.

The DTI has also set up 53 Negosyo Centers in the region, which covers Davao City and the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, and Davao de Oro.

Ms. Mendoza said these Negosyo Centers have conducted 300 training sessions from January to April, covering topics such as development of entrepreneurial skills, improving productivity, government regulations, financing, and technical demonstrations. Maya M. Padillo

Authorities seize P78M worth of marijuana in Cordillera and Sulu

PDEA

ABOUT P78 million worth of marijuana plants were destroyed by police and anti-narcotics forces in different parts of the country since last week.

In the northern provinces of Kalinga and Benguet, marijuana plants valued at P64.9 million were eradicated along with the seizure of over P61,000 worth of methamphetamine or shabu and dried marijuana fruiting tops, according to Cordillera Regional Police Director David K. Peredo, Jr.

He said follow-up operations are ongoing to identify the marijuana cultivators.

In Sulu, an island province in the south, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) of the Bangsamoro region confiscated and burned as estimated P13 million worth of marijuana shrubs found in a secluded village in Kalingalan Caluang town.

PDEA-Bangsamoro Director Christian O. Frivaldo told reporters Wednesday the anti-narcotics operation was conducted with the police and the Philippine Armys 21st Infantry Battalion. Artemio A. Dumlao and John Unson

House leaders reaffirm support to Romualdez amid tensions with VP

SPEAKER Martin G. Romualdez during the opening of the 19th Congress at the House of Representatives in Quezon City on July 25, 2022. — PHILIPPINE STAR/KRIZ JOHN ROSALES

LEADERS of the House of Representatives on Thursday issued statements of support for Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez after an apparent rift between Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio and he.

One thing is clear: Speaker Martin has created an atmosphere of certainty and trust. His strong, compassionate leadership brought all of us together to work on a single vision: to pass measures focused on achieving a prosperous, inclusive and resilient Philippines,House Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio D. Gonzales, Jr. said in a statement.

Speculations of a political rift between Mr. Romualdez and Ms. Duterte-Carpio resurfaced after the latter’s statement on Wednesday denying that the former was key to her decision to run in the 2022 elections.

To say that he tremendously helped in pushing for my Vice Presidential bid is acutely inaccurate an insult to thousands of groups and individuals who incessantly implored me to reconsider an earlier decision not to join national politics,Ms. Duterte-Carpio said in reaction to a claim made by Cavite Rep. Elpidio F. Barzaga, Jr.

House Majority Leader and Zamboanga City Rep. Manuel Jose M. Dalipe said in a separate statement that the House of Representatives will not be slowed down by premature partisanship.

Political tensions started last month after Mr. Gonzales ascended to the ceremonial senior deputy speakership post, replacing Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was demoted to deputy speaker.

In the same week, Ms. Duterte-Carpio announced her resignation from the ruling Lakas-CMD, which Ms. Arroyo serves as president emeritus and Mr. Romualdez leads as president.

In a statement, Mr. Romualdez brushed off any escalating tensions with Ms. Duterte-Carpio.

We will not allow any distraction to derail our efforts at finding appropriate and timely solutions to the problems affecting the lives of our people,he said. Beatriz Marie D. Cruz

PHL Para team set to surpass gold medal haul in Indonesia

WOMEN POWER at the 12th Asean Para Games powerlifting competition at the National Paralympic Committee of Cambodia (NPCC) Hall in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on June 7, 2023. Marydol Pamati-an (seated, fourth from left) winner of the gold (total) and silver (best lift) medals in the 41kg category, and Achelle Guion, who bagged two silvers in the 45kg category.

Javelin thrower Andrei Kuizon hands PHL 28th gold

PHNOM PENH — The Philippines got its 28th gold medal from javelin thrower Andrei Kuizon in the 12th ASEAN Para Games at the Morodok Techo National Stadium here yesterday to match its haul from last year in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Mr. Kuizon, a 22-year-old Pampanga native who was plucked out of the wheelchair basketball team, took the mint after organizers decided to separate the winners of his F54 class from F34.

The reigning shot put gold winner was initially awarded the silver Wednesday with a 19.03-meter heave with Vietnamese Vivan Tung seizing the mint with a 21.33m heave.

Until fate intervened to hand the wonder thrower from Las Piñas, a protégée of former national team member Nixon Mas, his second gold.

Mr. Kuizon’s triumph thus capped a spectacular performance by the 23-strong athletics squad as it finished with a 10-gold, 10-silver and 11-bronze harvest that surpassed its 6-4-14 effort a year ago.

It also put the whole Philippine Para team in a position to eclipse its 28-30-46 performance in Surakarta as it currently has a 28-31-39 harvest at press time.

It will now boil down to the country’s entries in chess, badminton and table tennis, which have still ongoing events at press time.

But it is more likely that it would come from the Filipino woodpushers, who have accounted for a whopping seven mints from rapid and standard events — four from Darry Bernardo in the men’s B2B3 class and three from Cheyzer Mendoza in the women’s PI section.

After three of the six-round blitz chess action, four Filipino players — Messrs. Bernardo, Mendoza, Arman Subaste (B2B3), Henry Lopez (men’s PI) and Francis Ching (men’s B1) — were currently at solo first place or tied for it.

In swimming at the Morodok Aquatics Center, Gary Bejino and Marco Tinamisan settled for a pair of silver medal finishes in the 100-meter freestyle S6 and S4, respectively.

Gary Bejino, who captured two gold medals in record-breaking feats entering the final day of pool competition, clocked a minute and 15.09 seconds in ending up behind eventual gold medalist Auyng Myint Myat of Myanmar, who timed in 1:14.90.

For Marco Tinamisan, it was a bittersweet effort as he checked in at 1:47.45 and finished behind Vietnam’s Danh Hoa’s 1:36.23 for the silver. — Joey Villar

Michael Weiss returns as head coach of PHL Azkals

MICHAEL WEISS — THE-AFC.COM/PHILSTAR FILE PHOTO

COMEBACKING German coach Michael Weiss has been tasked to re-energize the Philippine Azkals program and chart its course towards Asian-caliber status.

“What we’re doing right now is we’re trying to re-invigorate the Philippine Azkals and the re-entry of coach Michael (Weiss) into the system will be a key element,” team manager Dan Palami said yesterday as he joined Philippine Football Federation President Nonong Araneta and General-Secretary Edwin Gastanes in welcoming Mr. Weiss back in the fold.

“He knows almost all the players and with the short time that we have for the coach to get to know the players, I think the advantage is that he knows almost everybody already.”

Mr. Weiss had his first tour of duty in 2011 to 2013, a stint highlighted by a bronze medal in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup and a 21-11-12 win-draw-loss record.

He signed an initial one-year contract for his second tenure, taking the reins as the Azkals gear up for the joint qualifiers for the 2026 Fifa World Cup and 2027 AFC Asian Cup in November.

Prior to that, Mr. Weiss will prepare the Pinoy booters for a pair of friendlies against Nepal and Chinese-Taipei on June 15 and 19, respectively, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

More friendlies are being arranged for the next Fifa windows in September and October to get the team equipped before plunging into action in the second round of qualifiers. The Azkals must finish in the top two of their group to get an outright ticket to the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia and advance to Round 3 of the World Cup Qualifiers.

“I’m eager to start. At the end of the day, we’re here to win games and to push the whole program forward. It might not be the most exciting times now but we want to start again and re-ignite the things we had before,” Mr. Weiss said.

Mr. Weiss believes the Azkals have the tools to be a regular fixture in the Continental meet.

“If we can make it to the World Cup that would be surreal. Is it realistic? The Asian Cup, for sure. The Azkals must play in every Asian Cup,” he said.

“We have quality players. If we can bring them here and play together on a regular basis (then the Asian Cup is achievable),” he added.

The Azkals had its first and so far only Asian Cup appearance in 2019 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where they lost to Korea, China and Kyrgyz Republic in the group stage. They missed out on a return trip in the next competition set Jan. 12 to Feb. 10 next year in Qatar. — Olmin Leyba

Dyip finally win in PBA On Tour but lose Ferrer to injury

Games Today
(Ynares Sports Arena, Pasig)

5 p.m. — Blackwater vs NorthPort
7:30 p.m. — Phoenix vs NLEX

TERRAFIRMA may have gotten over the hump in the PBA On Tour but at a big cost: The Dyip lost wingman Kevin Ferrer to a major injury.

Mr. Ferrer tore his Achilles late in the second quarter of Terrafirma’s 104-92 win over the undermanned TNT Tropang Giga the other day, dampening their successful climb out of a 0-2 hole in the pre-season meet.

He had to be wheeled out of the Ynares Sports Arena court to worried looks from concerned teammates and opponents alike and fans after the horrific non-contact injury.

Mr. Ferrer is scheduled for surgery today, his participation in Season 48 that begins in October now in jeopardy due to the long recovery period such injury entails.

The former Santo Tomas standout finished with seven points, three rebounds and one assist before his abrupt exit.

It was only the second appearance of Mr. Ferrer in the exhibition series after missing the Dyip’s preceding 94-100 loss to Blackwater last May 31. He previously saw action in Terrafirma’s opening 82-119 setback to Converge last May 26.

Meanwhile, Blackwater (2-1) and NorthPort (1-2) aim to make it two in a row as they clash in today’s curtain raiser in the same Pasig venue.

The NorthPort Batang Pier look to build on their 99-90 breakthrough over TNT Tropang Giga coming off a 0-2 start while the Bossing seek to sustain the momentum from their six-point win over the Dyip in the 5 p.m. encounter.

Reeling from its 104-113 defeat to Rain or Shine, erstwhile unbeaten Phoenix (2-1) eyes a quick bounceback at 7:30 p.m. against an NLEX side (0-3) yet to hit its stride in the pre-season series. — Olmin Leyba

Denver Nuggets dynamic duo regain homecourt advantage

NIKOLA Jokic produced a historic stat line of 32 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists, Jamal Murray also had a triple-double and the Denver Nuggets notched a 109-94 victory over the host Miami Heat on Wednesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals.

Mr. Jokic became the first player ever to log at least 30 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists in an NBA Finals game. He made 12 of 21 shots and blocked two shots as Denver bounced back from a Game 2 home loss.

Mr. Murray scored a game-high 34 points to go with 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Nuggets, who controlled the contest. Christian Braun scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting off the bench, and Aaron Gordon had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Denver.

Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and Bam Adebayo added 22 points and 17 rebounds for the Heat, who trailed by as many as 21 points.

The Nuggets used Mr. Jokic’s 10th triple-double of the postseason to regain home-court advantage. Mr. Jokic has three of the 30-20-10 performances in NBA postseason history. The others came from Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Denver shot 51.2 percent from the field but was just 5 of 18 (27.8 percent) from 3-point range. The Nuggets had a 58-33 rebounding advantage.

Miami made 37 percent of its field-goal attempts and was 11 of 35 (31.4 percent) from behind the arc. Caleb Martin had 10 points for the Heat. — Reuters

‘I’m going to Miami’ — Lionel Messi

LOS ANGELES — Lionel Messi on Wednesday announced that he intends to join Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami as a free agent after parting ways with French champions Paris St Germain (PSG) and snubbing a lucrative contract offer in Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Messi, who played his final game for PSG over the weekend, was also linked with a return to Barcelona, but the Spanish club have had their hands tied due to LaLiga’s financial fair play rules.

“I made the decision that I’m going to go to Miami,” Mr. Messi said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo and Sport newspapers.

“I still haven’t closed it 100%. I’m still missing a few things, but we decided to go ahead. If Barcelona didn’t work out, I wanted to leave Europe, get out of the spotlight and think more about my family.”

Mr. Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in December and has earned a record seven Ballon d’Or awards, won the Ligue 1 title in his two seasons with PSG as well as the French Super Cup in 2022.

“After winning the World Cup and not being able to go to Barca, it was time to go to the US league to experience football in a different way and enjoy the day-to-day,” Mr. Messi said.

“Obviously with the same responsibility and desire to want to win and to always do things well. But with more peace of mind.”

The move is also a big win for MLS, which welcomed Messi while adding that work remained to finalize the details of the formal agreement.

“The (goat) is coming,” MLS tweeted, with a goat animal emoji standing in for the phrase “greatest of all time”.

Mr. Messi had wanted to go to a club where he could eventually have an ownership stake, a source with knowledge of the negotiations told Reuters this week, and his contract is expected to pave the way for him to do so after he retires. — Reuters

Historic Duo

The Nuggets knew they had to win heading into yesterday’s match. It would have been understating the obvious to argue that Game Three of the National Basketball Association Finals was pivotal to their cause; they lost at home for the first time in the 2023 Playoffs, and they could not afford to give the Heat, already with an abundance of confidence bordering on the irrational, even more fuel for self-assurance with yet another setback. They were the overwhelming favorites at the start of the best-of-seven affair for a reason, and they needed to once more show all and sundry why.

The good news is that the Nuggets did exactly that in front of 20,019 hostile fans at the Kaseya Center. It didn’t matter that they were burning rubber in one of the rowdiest confines in the league, or that the Heat resolved to greet the opening tip with purpose. They, too, exhibited the focus that was sorely lacking in Game Two; from the get-go, they gave the opposition respect, and played every moment in the set-to the right way: as if it were the last, with the outcome on the line.

If the Nuggets came away with victory at the final buzzer, it was precisely because they didn’t let up. They capitalized on their strengths throughout, enabling them to withstand the best the Heat could throw at them in the first half, and then pulling away in the second once they established their superiority. And, needless to say, foundational pieces Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray led the way. In fact, so definitive were the performances that the Dynamic Duo became the first to post 30-point triple-doubles in the history of the NBA.

The Nuggets know the work is far from done, to be sure. There is no quit with the competition, and they would do well to prep themselves for an even more sustained effort from the Heat tomorrow. Yesterday, they wound up with more of the so-called 50-50 balls, highlighting their capacity to match the physicality and relentlessness of the black and red. Tomorrow, they need to do the same. And should they again prove true to prognoses, they’ll be just a step away from meeting their date with destiny.

Taiwan activates air defence as China aircraft enter zone

TAIPEI — Taiwan activated its defense systems on Thursday after reporting 37 Chinese military aircraft flying into the island’s air defense zone, some of which then flew into the western Pacific, in Beijing’s latest mass air incursion.

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has over the past three years regularly flown its air force into the skies near the island, though not into Taiwan’s territorial air space.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said that from 5 a.m. (2100 GMT on Wednesday) it had detected 37 Chinese air force planes, including J-11 and J-16 fighters as well as nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, flying into the southwestern corner of its air defence identification zone, or ADIZ.

The ADIZ is a broader area Taiwan monitors and patrols to give its forces more time to respond to threats.

Some of the Chinese aircraft flew to Taiwan’s southeast and crossed into the western Pacific to perform “air surveillance and long distance navigation training”, the ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan sent its aircraft and ships to keep watch and activated land-based missile systems, it added, using its standard wording for how it responds to such Chinese activity.

China’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

China completed a second phase of joint air patrols with Russia over the Western Pacific on Wednesday, following flights on the previous day over the Sea of Japan and East China Sea, prompting concern in Japan over its national security.

Laura Rosenberger, chair of the American Institute in Taiwan, which manages the unofficial relationship between Washington and Taipei, is visiting Taiwan this week.

On Monday, she told Taiwan media that the United States had an enduring interest in preserving stability in the Taiwan Strait and the United States would continue to arm the island, a source of constant friction in Sino-U.S. ties.

In April, China held war games around Taiwan following a trip to the United States by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

Taiwan’s government rejects China’s sovereignty claims and says only the island’s people can decide their future. — Reuters

East Coast blanketed in veil of smoke from Canadian fires; millions told to stay indoors

NEW YORK — Schools across the US East Coast canceled outdoor activities, airline traffic slowed, and millions of Americans were urged to stay indoors on Wednesday as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted south, blanketing cities in thick, yellow haze.

The US National Weather Service issued air quality alerts for virtually the entire Atlantic seaboard. Health officials from Vermont to South Carolina and as far west as Ohio and Kansas warned residents that spending time outdoors could cause respiratory problems due to high levels of fine particulates in the atmosphere.

“It’s critical that Americans experiencing dangerous air pollution, especially those with health conditions, listen to local authorities to protect themselves and their families,” President Joseph R. Biden said on Twitter.

US private forecasting service AccuWeather said thick haze and soot extending from high elevations to ground level marked the worst outbreak of wildfire smoke to blanket the Northeastern US in more than 20 years.

New York’s famous skyline, usually visible for miles, appeared to vanish in an otherworldly veil of smoke, which some residents said made them feel unwell.

“It makes breathing difficult,” Mohammed Abass said as he walked down Broadway in Manhattan. “I’ve been scheduled for a road test for driving, for my driving license today, and it was canceled.”

The smoky air was especially tough on people toiling outdoors, such as Chris Ricciardi, owner of Neighbor’s Envy Landscaping in Roxbury, New Jersey. He said he and his crew were curtailing work hours and wearing masks they used for heavy pollen.

“We don’t have the luxury to stop working,” he said. “We want to keep our exposure to the smoke to a minimum, but what can you really do about it?”

Angel Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, a fashion stylist at a Givenchy outlet in Manhattan, said he and fellow workers began feeling ill and closed shop early when they realized the smell of smoke was permeating the store.

“It’s so intense, you would think the wildfire was happening right across the river, not up in Canada,” Ramirez said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the situation an “emergency crisis,” saying the air pollution index for parts of her state was eight times above normal.

Reduced visibility from the haze forced the Federal Aviation Administration to slow air traffic into the New York City area and Philadelphia from elsewhere on the East Coast and upper Midwest, with flight delays averaging about a half hour.

Schools up and down the East Coast called off outdoor activities, including sports, field trips and recesses.

A Broadway matinee of Prima Facie was halted after 10 minutes when actress Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to poor air quality. The show was restarted with understudy Dani Arlington going on for Ms. Comer in the role of Tessa, a production spokesperson said in a statement.

Even Major League Baseball was impacted, as the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies both postponed home games scheduled for Wednesday. A National Women’s Soccer League match in Harrison, New Jersey, was also rescheduled, as was a WNBA women’s basketball game in Brooklyn.

In some areas, the air quality index (AQI), which measures major pollutants including particulate matter produced by fires, was well above 400, according to Airnow, which sets 100 as “unhealthy” and 300 as “hazardous.”

At noon (4 p.m. GMT), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was recording the nation’s worst air quality index, with an AQI reading of 410. Among major cities, New York had the highest AQI in the world on Wednesday afternoon at 342, about double the index for chronically polluted cities such as Dubai (168) and Delhi (164), according to IQAir.

HAZY SKIES
The smoke billowed over the US border from Canada, where hundreds of forest fires have scorched 9.4 million acres (3.8 million hectares) and forced 120,000 people from their homes in an unusually early and intense start to the wildfire season.

The skies above New York and many other North American cities grew progressively hazier through Wednesday, with an eerie yellowish tinge filtering through the smoky canopy. The air smelled like burning wood.

Wildfire smoke has been linked with higher rates of heart attacks and strokes, increases in emergency room visits for asthma and other respiratory conditions, eye irritation, itchy skin and rashes, among other problems.

A Home Depot store in Manhattan sold out of air purifiers and masks. New York Road Runners canceled events intended to mark Global Running Day.

“This is not the day to train for a marathon or to do an outside event with your children,” New York Mayor Eric Adams advised. “If you are older or have heart or breathing problems or an older adult, you should remain inside.”

Pedestrians donned face masks in numbers that brought to mind the worst days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tyrone Sylvester, 66, playing chess in Manhattan’s Union Square as he has on most days for 30 years, but wearing a mask, said he had never seen the city’s air quality so bad.

“When the sun looks like that,” he said, pointing out the bronze-like orb visible through the smoky sky, “we know something’s wrong. This is what global warming looks like.”

Poor air quality is likely to persist into the weekend, with a developing storm system expected to shift the smoke westward across the Great Lakes and deeper south through the Ohio Valley and into the mid-Atlantic region, AccuWeather said. — Reuters
