Summer MMFF pushing through; 8 entries announced

A CRIME drama from Brillante Mendoza and a musical using the songs of Rey Valera are among the eight entries in the inaugural summer edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) in April.

Originally meant to start three years ago, the summer edition of the annual film festival was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic which lead to nationwide lockdowns. The Summer MMFF will finally push through from April 8 to 18 in all cinemas nationwide.

The eight official entries are:

• Apag. A crime drama directed by Brillante Mendoza starring Coco Martin, Lito Lapid, Jacklyn Jose, and Gladys Reyes.

• Unravel: A Swiss Side Love Story. A romance filmed in Switzerland, it is directed by RC Delos Reyes starring Gerald Anderson and Kylie Padilla.

• Yung Libro sa Napanuod Ko. Actress Bela Padilla directs and stars opposite South Korean actor Yoo Min-gon in this romance.

• Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko. A musical directed by Joven Tan featuring the music of Rey Valera. It stars RK Bagatsing and Meg Imperial.

• Singlebells. A comedy directed by Fifth Solomon starring Aljur Abrenica, Alex Gonzaga and Angeline Quinto.

• Here Come the Groom. A comedy directed by Chris Martinez and starring Enchong Dee, Kempee de Leon, Awra Briguela, Maris Racal, and Kalad Karen.

• About Us But Not About Us. A dramatic thriller directed by Jun Robles Lana and starring Romnick Sarmenta and Elijah Canlas.

• Love You Long Time. A romance directed by JP Habac and starring Carlo Aquino.

“With the success of the holiday MMFF in bringing the movie going public back to the theaters, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando ‘Don’ Artes thought of finally pushing through with the very first summer MMFF which should have happened three years ago if it weren’t for the pandemic,” film festival spokesperson Noel Ferrer told BusinessWorld in a message through Instagram.

The film festival is an annual project of the MMDA.

Last year’s December film festival, the first held fully onsite after the start of the COVID 19 pandemic, reached its target of P500 million in gross sales.

“We are hoping that with the built-in publicity and awareness that come with the MMFF, people can treat this as another event and chance to go back to the theaters once again,” Mr. Ferrer wrote.

Thirty-three films were submitted for consideration for the inaugural summer edition of the film festival.

Mr. Ferrer noted that film submissions for the summer edition are also eligible for the holiday edition “provided they fill up the necessary new entry forms” as there will be a separate selection.

The entries were chosen based on criteria similar to that of the annual MMFF: artistic excellence (40%), commercial appeal (40%), Filipino cultural sensibility (10%), and global appeal (10%).

The MMFF summer edition is organized by the MMDA along with the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines.

“This very first Summer MMFF is exciting because it’s all new, without any precedent or formula, nothing of the usual December film festival features and players, and a very good time for new and exciting concepts and collaborations that the Filipino audience should look forward to and support,” Mr. Ferrer said.

The Summer MMFF’s Parade of Stars will be held on April 2 from Commonwealth to Quezon City Circle, while the Awards Night is scheduled on April 18 at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City.

Just like during the annual film festival in December, no international movie titles will be screened in regular theaters for the duration of the Summer MMFF. — Michelle Anne P. Soliman

Digital Edge, Threadborne Group eye second data center

SINGAPORE-based Digital Edge Holdings Pte. Ltd. and the Philippines’ Threadborne Group are looking to build a bigger data center locally after they tied up to open a 10-megawatt data center in Laguna.

The two companies’ first project, NARRA1, is under a joint venture called Digital Edge Philippines, Inc. between the Rufino family’s Threadborne Group and Digital Edge.

This first venture of the Singapore data center company in the Philippines will begin its operations on March 1, with some of its racks pre-booked by service providers and enterprises.

“We are opening on March 1st. We are already pre-booked; we have booked several clients. We cannot announce the names, the utilization, but we have a pretty big pipeline,” Digital Edge Country Manager for the Philippines Victor F. Barrios said on the sidelines of a media tour.

“Our goal is to have at least more than 20 carriers in our facility to offer connectivity solutions,” Mr. Barrios said.

The two companies raised $100 million in capital for the project, which will probably be used up in 2023, according to Threadborne Principal for Real Estate Raymond D. Rufino.

“I think we will be close to using up all of that within the year,” Mr. Rufino said.

NARRA1 offers 2,200 cabinets and will become the largest regional carrier-neutral data center in operation in the country.

The data center, which will have 5,200 square meters of collocation space, is located inside Laguna Technopark in Biñan, Laguna.

Meanwhile, the joint venture is looking to build a bigger data center in the Philippines for which funds are needed to be raised, Mr. Rufino said.

“I am hoping within the year we can secure a financing partner because the next data center will be heavy on capital. We really would like to get some financing in place so we could do the next one,” he said.

“We are open for an initial public offering (IPO) in the future if that is a good option for us. Our partners are very open to everything. We can do a REIT (real estate investment trust) or an IPO, we have to see,” he added.

The company is set to start the planning for the second data center once it fills up NARRA1 with customers.

“We have to fill this [data center] up with customers, start generating well and once we have that then we will start the construction or planning about that,” Digital Edge Chief Product Officer Jonathan Chou.

“We have some rough ideas on how big it will be but it will be bigger than this one,” Mr. Chou said.

When asked where the second data center will be, Mr. Rufino said the group has yet to decide where to build it.

“We are still internally debating that because with location, you have a lot of options. We are evaluating multiple sites,” he said. — Justine Irish D. Tabile

Everything Everywhere dominates SAG awards, setting stage for Oscars

JENNY SLATE, Tallie Medel, Jamie Lee Curtis, James Hong and Michelle Yeoh accept the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award for Everything Everywhere All at Once during the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, California, US, Feb. 26. — REUTERS/MARIO ANZUONI

LOS ANGELES — Dimension-hopping adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once grabbed the top movie honor at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards on Sunday, cementing its status as the front-runner for the prestigious best picture prize at next month’s Oscars.

The movie about a Chinese-American laundromat owner struggling to finish her taxes amid family turmoil has claimed a pile of trophies in recent weeks at the Hollywood awards ceremonies leading up to the Academy Awards on March 12.

On Sunday, the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once was named best film ensemble by members of the SAG-AFTRA acting union. SAG’s film honorees are closely watched because actors comprise the largest group of Oscar voters.

The science-fiction movie also earned awards for lead female actress Michelle Yeoh, who portrays laundry owner Evelyn Wang, and supporting actors Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.

An overwhelmed Ms. Yeoh spoke through tears — and a few expletives — as she accepted her trophy.

“This is not just for me. This is for every little girl that looks like me,” Ms. Yeoh said. “Thank you for giving me a seat at the table.”

Mr. Quan — who as a child star had a featured role in a 1984 Indiana Jones film, but had given up on acting for years — said he was the first Asian to win in the category.

“When I stepped away from acting it was because there were so few opportunities,” the Vietnamese-American actor said. “The landscape looks so different now than before. Thank you to everyone in this room who contributed to these changes.”

When the cast took the stage for the ensemble award, Ms. Yeoh handed the microphone to 94-year-old James Hong, who played her father in the film.

In the early days of his career, Mr. Hong recounted, producers said, “Asians were not good enough. And they are not box office.

“But look at us now.”

Everything Everywhere All At Once previously scored the top accolades at the Directors Guild and Producers Guild awards. The movie also is a commercial success, selling more than $107 million worth of tickets. It is the highest-grossing movie ever for film distributor A24.

The SAG award for best male movie actor went to Brendan Fraser for playing a reclusive, severely obese man trying to reconnect with his daughter in The Whale.

An emotional Mr. Fraser said his younger self “never would have believed that I would have been offered the role of my life” of Charlie, the man in the Whale who “is on a raft of regrets in a sea of hope.”

“I’ve been on that sea and I’ve rode that wave,” he said.

In television categories, the cast of Abbott Elementary, a mockumentary about teachers at an underfunded school in Philadelphia, won best TV comedy ensemble.

The White Lotus cast landed the drama series award for the show’s second season, set in Italy, about wealthy vacationers and the staff who served them at a ritzy resort.

Sally Field, 76, received a lifetime achievement award for an acting career that began nearly 60 years ago with TV hits Gidget and The Flying Nun before an Oscar-winning film run that took her from Norma Rae to Steel Magnolias to Forrest Gump to Lincoln.

“There is not a day that I don’t feel quietly thrilled to call myself an actor,” she said.

Basic Energy unit weighs Mabini wind project’s partners

LISTED firm Basic Energy Corp. said its unit had signed agreements with several entities interested in its 50-megawatt (MW) Mabini wind project in Batangas.

In a regulatory filing on Monday, Basic Energy said its subsidiary Mabini Energy Corp. signed confidentiality agreements with several parties as potential partners for the project.

The Mabini wind power project covers 4,860 hectares in the Mabini Peninsula. It is expected to operate and deliver power to the grid by 2027. Mabini Energy is said to be currently conducting a wind resource assessment for the project.

Basic Energy said Mabini Energy secured a non-disclosure agreement with unidentified entities showing interest in the wind power project based on the data gathered through its wind resource assessment.

“Encouraged by their findings, some of these firms have furthered the discussions with [Mabini Energy] and have signified their intent to submit draft term sheets as potential partners in the Mabini wind power project,” Basic Energy said.

The company added that Mabini Energy will then assess each term sheet submitted to select its potential partner.

In October last year, the company announced that it had installed a meteorological or met mast for the Mabini wind power project.

BTS member j-hope begins process to join South Korea’s military

FACEBOOK.COM/BANGTAN.OFFICIAL

SEOUL — A second member of Korea’s BTS — the first K-pop band nominated for a Grammy — has begun the enlistment process for mandatory military service, a management official confirmed on Monday, two months after the group’s oldest member began his service.

BTS members said last year they would join the military starting with Jin, who turned 30 and enlisted in December after postponing his service as long as permitted.

An official at the band’s management, BigHit Music, said on Sunday that a second member, the 29-year-old j-hope, whose real name is Jung Ho-seok, applied to end postponement of his own enlistment.

“We would like to inform our fans that j-hope has initiated the military enlistment process,” the statement said. “We ask you for your continued love and support for j-hope until he completes his military service and safely returns.”

All able-bodied South Korean men ages 18-28 must serve in the military for about two years.

A 2019 legislative revision allowed globally acknowledged K-pop stars to delay signing until they are 30. Some lawmakers have pushed to sharply reduce their service along the lines of what is required of Olympic and Asian Game medallists and some classical musicians, but their efforts made little progress.

South Korea’s defense minister has said BTS members could perform overseas while serving. Many artists have been designated as such “entertainment soldiers.”

In a separate statement on Monday, BigHit said j-hope would release a solo single titled “on the street” on Friday, which he wrote as a “gift” for fans to share his feelings toward them.

The seven-member group has pursued solo projects since announcing a break from group musical activities in June. — Reuters

Protected bike lanes to remain on Ayala Avenue

AYALA LAND, Inc. (ALI) and the #MakeItSaferMakati movement have agreed to retain the protected bike lanes along Ayala Avenue in the central business district.

In a joint statement, the Makati Business Club, ALI and #MakeItSaferMakati movement said they also agreed to jointly study and implement various street design solutions to promote the safety of all road users.

“All parties agreed that it is to everyone’s benefit that Ayala Avenue remain a safe, convenient and inclusive transport corridor for all road users — including pedestrians, commuters, cyclists, and motorists,” they said.

Ayala Avenue will continue to have a “physically protected and enforced bike lane — with bollards to separate cyclists from other vehicles, road studs for better visibility, and with enforcement through the Makati Parking Authority — supported by an intensified information campaign.”

A technical working group will be formed to ensure continuous improvement of transport schemes along Ayala Avenue, including further studies on the bike lane widths.

Bicycle use increased in Metro Manila during the coronavirus pandemic, as public transportation was limited due to the strict lockdowns. Aside from Ayala Avenue, bike lanes have been established along major roads such as EDSA, Macapagal Boulevard and C5.

The Transportation department in 2021 said it completed nearly 500 kilometers of bike lanes in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and Metro Davao under the Bayanihan Bike Lane Networks Project.

ATN board greenlights solar joint venture

ATN HOLDINGS, Inc. said the board of its energy arm had approved entering into a 20-year joint venture and technical agreements for its 30-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) project with prospective parties in the country and abroad.

In a disclosure, ATN Holdings said ATN Philippines Solar Energy Group, Inc. (ATN Solar) was given a go signal to agree with possible partners from the Philippines, Europe, Japan, and Malaysia.

The company said the decision was due to the projected output decline of the Malampaya gas field, which supplies about 20% of the country’s energy requirements.

“To contribute to mitigation of energy supply deficit projected in 2024 and thereafter due to the depletion of the Malampaya natural gas field and implementation of Renewable Portfolio Standards,” the company said.

ATN Solar’s board also approved the company to negotiate, enter and execute a contract with Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for the supply, delivery, and purchase of solar electricity from its 30-MW solar plant in Macabud, Rodriguez, Rizal.

Meanwhile, ATN Holdings’ board also approved the company to secure a P5 million bond for a special mining permit for 2023 covering 82.71 hectares of quarry area in Montalban, Rizal.

Established in 1961, the company is primarily engaged in mining and oil exploration. It also has interests in real estate, land development, energy, and health care services.

It said in a statement that the profit increase was “driven by robust growth across its core businesses.”

It said its operations continued to grow as revenues were up 15% for the year.

Meanwhile, operating expenses rose by 8.64% to P131.208 billion from P119.875 billion as it opened new branches in rural areas and increased it spending on information technology for digital initiatives.

KMC Solutions to launch Quezon City office space

KMC Solutions, a provider of flexible private and co-working office spaces, will soon open another branch in Quezon City.

KMC Solutions Chief Executive Officer Michael McCullough said the new branch will be located in SM North EDSA Tower 1, in response to client demand. The new branch is expected to open in April.

“When we scanned the market, SM North EDSA was really the location that was most successful for our employees in the north,” he said during the launch of the company’s One Ayala Tower branch.

According to KMC, the North EDSA branch will have one floor with a floor area of approximately 2,448 square meters (sq.m.). It will have both traditional and co-working spaces.

“Fully equipped with modern amenities and facilities for a seamless work experience, our new office space in Quezon City offers a unique blend of comfort and productivity,” the company said.

Meanwhile, KMC’s One Ayala Tower branch covers 10,663-sq.m. divided into six floors, with dedicated floors for co-working and private enterprises. It has a capacity of 2,133 seats.

Mr. McCullough said the first three floors of the One Ayala Tower branch have been taken up by clients wanting private offices.

The facility is above the One Ayala transportation hub which serves as a terminal for buses and Asian utility vehicles, and is connected to the Metro Rail Transit Line 3.

It also has amenities such as a training room, shower room and even some sleeping quarters.

Mr. McCullough said companies like Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft partner Avepoint, World Caribbean Cruise Lines, Evolent Healthcare, and the Purple Group have already signed up as clients.

“So, we had a couple big enterprise clients that took floors here… Right now, we probably have 20 clients, and that’s the big enterprise clients where they have private offices,” he said.

KMC Solutions now has 27 flexible office space branches in Makati, Ortigas, Mandaluyong, Bonifacio Global City, Alabang, Pasay, Clark, Cebu, and Iloilo. — Adrian H. Halili

Paris mental illness documentary wins top Berlin film prize

A SCENE from On the Adamant.

BERLIN — On the Adamant, a documentary about a floating daycare center in Paris for adults with mental illness, clinched the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear award on Saturday.

Its director Nicolas Philibert said he was deeply touched by the jury’s decision to award the Berlinale’s top prize to a documentary rather than a work of fiction.

“That documentary can be considered cinema in its own right touches me deeply,” he said. “For 40 years I have always fought for it to be seen as much.”

Shot over three years, the film follows life at a daycare center aboard The Adamant, a barge moored on the right bank of the Seine, where patients and carers interact in ways that break with what Mr. Philibert sees as the dehumanization of psychiatry.

“Patients in psychiatry are always stigmatized … and always considered through the prism of violence and I wanted to reverse the cliche and show how human they are,” he said on the red carpet after his film won.

“I hope it will help to awake the consciousness of society.”

The festival’s Silver Bear for best leading actor went to Sofia Otero, who plays an eight-year-old transgender child in 20,000 Species of Bees.

“It is rare to see someone convey so many emotions but remain simple and shattering,” said jury president Kristen Stewart. “Especially in performances given to us by a child.” — Reuters
