AirAsia pays $2.1B in pandemic refunds

ISABEL LEE-UNSPLASH

LOW-COST CARRIER AirAsia has paid $2.1 billion or 98.4% of the refund claims it received since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020.

“Efforts to settle the remaining balances are ongoing as the airline strives to rebuild its operations back to normalcy,” the company said in a statement on Sunday.

The carrier has launched a new refund tracking feature on its Super App and website, which will allow guests to get the detailed status on their refunds. These will be available once guests input the case number of their refunds under the “My Case” tab.

The airline has also rolled out a new live call feature in its application for real-time call assistance, allowing guests to speak directly with a human agent during their Ask Bo Live Chat interaction for immediate resolution of their concerns.

Ask Bo is an AI-powered concierge launched in February this year for all guests within the Capital A lines of businesses. Capital A Bhd, formerly known as AirAsia Group, is an investment holding company with a portfolio of travel and lifestyle businesses.

“The enhancements introduced are part of an exciting line of features, tools, and applications AirAsia plans to release over time,” said Kesavan Sivanandam, chief airport and customer experience officer of AirAsia Aviation Group.

“As for the refund tracking feature, we have made the process easier and more transparent for our guests. We acknowledge that there are guests who are frustrated with the lack of visibility in our refund process. We aim to put our guests at ease and give them peace of mind,” he added.

AirAsia said the service will be available in English, Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, Thai, and Bahasa Indonesia with more languages eyed to be added in the future, including Tagalog. — J.I.D. Tabile

Longchamp goes glamping for Spring-Summer 2023

FOR SPRING-SUMMER 2023, Longchamp is inspired by glamping — glamorous camping. The collection explores two contrasting yet complementary ambiances. The first takes inspiration from nature, travel, and authenticity. In this section of the collection, Longchamp Creative Director Sophie Delafontaine uses natural materials, including linen, cotton, and silk, while the color palette draws nuances of tan, beige and ecru from the trees, flowers and earth. The second ambiance plays with contrast in a more festive, glamorous, sporty spirit. The collection includes the Le Pliage Cuir bag embellished with metal rivets, which mirror not only the lights of the party, but also the lurex and sequins of the collection. Carrying over the energy of the day, the Epure line is interpreted in a joyful gradation of tie-dye sunrise shades. Ms. Delafontaine envisions the Spring-Summer 2023 collection as a series of combinations between two ambiances, in which fabrics, prints and colors are playfully mixed and match. “You can twist sequins with stripes. You can twist a metallic leather mini-skirt with a two-tone knit crop top and a leather jacket with glitter polka dots. That’s the essence of the daring and dynamic Longchamp woman.” The collection is accompanied by an array of leather goods, which range from elegantly understated to eye-catching. Longchamp has, for instance, reimagined its iconic Roseau bag in cotton and linen embellished with polka dots, and energized its new Box-Trot line with zesty lemon and candy-pink colorways. Meanwhile, new formats make their debut: a small vanity case and a mini hand-held bag. Simple, stylish accessories provide the finishing touch — witness denim baseball caps with the Longchamp racehorse logo — while avant-garde sunglasses take inspiration from snow and water sports. The shoe collection, meanwhile, welcomes new sneakers, clogs and Le Pliage Re-Play sandals. In an unexpected summer collaboration, Fatboy x Longchamp present an inflatable armchair in recycled polyester featuring an outside pocket with a cowhide leather flap from the emblematic Le Pliage bag. This limited edition in eye-popping shades nods to the key codes of the season. Longchamp is exclusively available at Rustan’s Makati, Rustan’s Shangri-La, Rustan’s Cebu, Greenbelt 5, and Rustans.com.

MGen eyes to expand renewable energy portfolio

MERALCO POWERGEN Corp. (MGen) is planning to expand its renewable energy (RE) portfolio, with a new project likely to begin construction by the second half of the year.

“We hope we will be able to add. Our target is 1,500 [megawatts] and we expect some major expansion projects in the next six months to a year,” Jaime T. Azurin, president and chief executive officer of MGen, told reporters at the sidelines of a March 30 event.

MGen, the power generation arm of listed electric distribution utility Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), is targeting to build 1,500 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy projects by 2030.

“The 1,500 MW, that is attributable, that is operational. We hope we will be able to start construction of the next one by the middle of this year or third quarter. You will hear about us constructing our pipeline projects. So, almost there,” he added.

Mr. Azurin did not disclose the capacity of the project they are targeting to start building this year, but added that this “will not be the 50-60 MW but bigger projects.”

He said that MGen expects to reach 200 MW of RE capacity by the end of this year.

“After Baras, we will be at 200 MW,” Mr. Azurin said, referring to the 75-MW-alternating current (MWac) solar project in Baras, Rizal, which he said the project is expected to be completed within this month.

“We’re already in testing, so it will be commissioned already,” he added.

MGen Renewable Energy, Inc. or MGreen, the renewable energy subsidiary of MGen, inaugurated its 68-MWac solar plant with Vena Energy in Ilocos Norte on March 30.

Uniqlo launches innerwear for women of any age, size, and lifestyle

JAPANESE global apparel retailer Uniqlo introduces LifeWear for Her, a lineup of innerwear for women fit for any age, size, and lifestyle. Launched March 29, LifeWear for Her is now available in all Uniqlo stores nationwide.

The line is meant to grow with women as they take on key events of their lives, from fitting their first bra, to trying on practical wear for school, to purchasing pieces for maternity support.

“Undergarments set the basis of comfort,” said Kelly Go, co-founder and managing director of Auro Chocolate, a cacao and chocolate products producer. “That’s the underpinning of every outfit. If you’re uncomfortable there… You’d be fidgeting the whole day,” she said at the LifeWear for Her launch.

“I wear the comfiest clothes in the office, but I still want to look professional,” said Jacqueline Yuengtian Gutierrez, co-founder and CEO of Filipino brands Happy Skin Cosmetics and BLK Cosmetics. “It inspires people if you wear something nice. It inspires the people around you to also do that,” she added at the same event.

The products in the lineup are:

* Wireless Bra (3D Hold). Uniqlo’s original three-dimensional cup structure is now available in more cup sizes for an improved fit. The seamless design stays hidden under outer layers.

* Wireless Bra (Relax) (Plunging Lace). This wireless bra has a relaxed and unrestrictive fit for a natural outline. Its strap adjusters are made for comfort and are complemented by soft and stretchy lace.

AIRism Ultra Seamless Shorts (Hiphugger). These have a hip-hugging design and are made with smooth UNIQLO’s AIRism fabric with quick-drying technology.

* AIRism Ultra Seamless Shorts (High Rise Brief). Made with breathable AIRism fabric that actively wicks moisture and heat from the skin, it is improved by the fabric of the gusset, which is gentle on the skin.

* AIRism Body Shaper Non-Lined Half Shorts (Smooth). This garment shapes the waist. It is soft, snug, and uses AIRism technology for stay-fresh comfort. Women can choose between the smooth version and the support version, which uses various knitting techniques for additional tummy control and to give the thighs a sleek silhouette.

AIRism Absorbent Sanitary Shorts (Hiphugger). Meant to be used during a woman’s period, the Sanitary Shorts are lightweight and can absorb up to 20 ml of moisture. The central part of the crotch has an absorbent double layer for added protection. The crotch panel also has two wings for use with sanitary napkins. The body is likewise made with AIRism technology, with odor-control features and water-resistant fabric. It has a low-rise hip-hugger style, with seamless hems that have no fabric edges. — Patricia Mirasol

Ternocon3 exhibit highlights the Balintawak

AN EXHIBIT of the terno and balintawak pieces created by the mentors and finalists from the third edition of Ternocon will run from April 12 to 16 at various venues of the Ayala Malls.

Presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), in partnership with Bench/Suyen Corp., and Ayala Malls, the “Ternocon3: Ang Balintawak Ngayon” exhibit is part of Ayala Malls’ Bravo Filipino program.

For this edition of the biennial terno-making convention and competition, the finalists were challenged to re-interpret the balintawak for Filipinos today and draw from its essence as a country attire.

Like other variations of terno, the balintawak is identified with the butterfly sleeves. Typically used for town fiestas, pilgrimages, or excursions to the countryside, this type of less formal terno is characterized by its alampay (a piece of cloth used as a head scarf, a kerchief folded as a triangle, or folded as a narrow rectangle resting on one shoulder) and the tapis (a strip of cloth wrapped around the waist).

Traditional balintawaks were typically made from cañamazo, an open mesh textile, for the camisa or blouse, and printed cottons for the alampay, tapis, and saya or skirt. Design motifs include stripes, plaid, flora, and whimsical imagery.

Curated by Ternocon Artistic Director Gino Gonzales, the exhibits will open simultaneously at the activity centers of Greenbelt 5, Glorietta 2, and Glorietta 4, as well as the lobby of the Ayala Museum.

THE MENTORS
The exhibit at the Greenbelt 5 features works by Ternocon mentor Dennis Lustico, who worked with a sophisticated color palette executed in beaded piña cloth, point d’esprit, lace, fishnet, taffeta, duchesse satin, and silk organza. His pieces, inspired by a cluster of coconut trees that he had seen while traveling around the country, feature long sleeves attached beneath the butterfly sleeves and traditional tapis stylized as draped forms and peplums in contrasting colors.

Mentors Inno Sotto and Joey Samson, with Ternocon 2020 winner Hannah Adrias, take the spotlight at the exhibit in Glorietta 2.

Two works by Mr. Sotto will be on display. One piece pays homage to National Artist Ramon Valera, with his modernist interpretation of the Philippine dress “which stood out from the rest of the clothes” for its contemporaneity and made a lasting impression on the young Mr. Sotto in the 1960s. The other garment is Mr. Sotto’s own interpretation of the balintawak.

Mr. Samson’s Ang Mga Pag-ibig ni José Rizal drew inspiration from the real, fictional, and metaphorical personae in the National Hero’s life. He fused the languages of traditional menswear with womenswear. The pañuelo was wrapped around the shoulders of a man, while the tapis became a natural extension of the barong. Conversely, tailoring techniques including the pintucking on men’s tuxedo shirts were exaggerated to create the voluminous bodices of two ternos for the finale.

Ms. Adrias’ collection, meanwhile, was fueled by a dystopian vision of fractured and distressed materials, with the alampay and tapis transformed into pointed or curvilinear strips that enveloped and revealed the body.

On display at Ayala Museum Lobby, Ternocon3 mentors Chito Vijandre and Ricky Toledo produced three suites (Chulas, Dalagang Bukid, and Señoritas) that celebrated maximalism, multiculturalism, and camp. Beaded catchphrases from Bisaya, Tagalog slang, and English literature, and images from Pinoy pop culture, and kitsch were merged with fine, vintage textiles, lacework, and classical imagery.

The meticulous assemblage and construction of the collection was done over a period of two years. The duo’s use of cross references between historic iconography and popular culture mirrors the Philippine terno’s wide and evolving design vocabulary. The collection was presented at the Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez of the CCP on Jan. 28 this year, to the tune of jukebox hits from the 1970s and 1980s. The exhibition music was from the Himig Collection of the Filipinas Heritage Library.

THE FINALISTS
Balintawaks by the Ternocon 3 finalists will be on display at the Glorietta 4 Activity Center.

Joe Salazar Award (Chief Mentor’s Medal) winner Amor Albano elevated the appearance of an inexpensive textile through the use of alampay with tiered layers or a trail of cut out flowers, and tapis with exposed layering of textiles, and effortless draping of the skirts.

Glyn Alley Magtibay used translucent X-ray sheets instead of transparent cañamazo textile to create the balintawak’s butterfly sleeves, bodice, corset, and other accessories. Bold orange and chartreuse textiles contrasted against the X-ray’s grayscale, resulting in contemporary interpretations of the balintawak for GenZ.

Bon Hansen Reyes used the language of menswear to interpret balintawak and evoke a genderless garment. The more structured suiting and shirting materials were combined with the softness of tulle and hand embroidery.

Pura Escurdia Award winner Gabbie Sarenas subtly tweaked the traditional balintawak to include dimensional embroidery of sampaguita flowers on the cañamazo and embroidered sketchy lines to simulate the bold stripes of the tapis, and exposed the traditional enaguas (petticoats).

Bree Esplanada combined his graphic and fashion design skills to create ternos inspired by Philippine lore, with tikbalang and other mythological creatures printed, embroidered, beaded, and appliqued on the textile.

Inspired by the buang (bag lady in Kinaray-a), Karl Mark Nadales used deconstructed components and upcycled materials to suggest an assemblage of garments for his balintawak.

Al Rey Rosano captured the sunset of his hometown in Negros Oriental by recreating the yellow to orange ombré through meticulous micro pleating. Meanwhile, Ramon Valera Award (bronze medal) winner Glady Rose Pantua, celebrated the balintawak’s roots as country attire, with a dress which was embellished with home crafts.

Marc Carcillar created an alampay that emerged from the skirt, went over a shoulder, and was fastened on the waist to resemble a draped tapis. An enormous pin was fashioned by a pukpok craftsman, and it pierced a butterfly sleeve together with the alampay. His other piece made use of a sheer, black overlay that suggested both the alampay and tapis. A bilao or woven tray was repurposed as a hat.

Cheetah Rivera’s collection was inspired by two varieties of tropical butterflies, with the wings’ translucency and delicacy echoed by pleated organza, peplums suggesting the wind-blown tapis, and extended collars resembling layered ruffs alluded to the idea of terno sleeves as butterfly wings.

Dee Javier found inspiration from Francisco Balagtas’ poem “Florante at Laura,” with phrases rendered in caviar beads, a cowl suggested the alampay, and passages in ink on draped cloth that suggested a crumpled, tear-stained letter.

Geom Hernandez merged the alampay and tapis into an apron made of paneled, multi-colored tweed. His second outfit had a central portion of tie-dyed material which resembled a Rorschach pattern. It was flanked by adjustable panels with draw strings — a practical device commonly found in traditional balintawak skirts.

Pacita Longos Award (gold medal) winner Yssa Inumerable was inspired by images of the Gibson Girls from the turn of the 20th century, gently tweaking the traditional components, and inserting elements from traditional men’s dress with its pleated pichera and embroidered collar.

ARQCapital Partners to invest in more small firms

ARQCAPITAL Partners, Inc. is raising more funds to reach its target to invest about P2.5 billion in 50 “high-growth” medium enterprises in next three years, it said in a statement last week.

“ARQ will continue to respond to the need of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) of appropriate and sustainable capital during their growth phase, ensuring that these value-adding partnerships will help elevate the financial inclusion of SMEs and push for a sustainable economic growth for the Philippines,” ARQCapital Chief Executive Officer and founding partner Edmund M. Solilapsi said.

The company said it will invest about P300 million in residential development company Atharra Group and financial tech (fintech) startup Advance Tech Lending, Inc. through its unit ARQ SME Mezzanine Business Development Co.

ARQ SME Mezzanine was formed by ARQCapital in 2014 to be an SME-focused private mezzanine debt investor.

“ARQ is supporting Atharra and Advance to become significant players in their respective industries, which is consistent with our goal to invest into promising medium enterprises tracking a path of sustainable growth,” Mr. Solilapsi said.

Atharra will use the funds from ARQCapital for two affordable housing projects in Bohol.

The company has built more than 250 residential properties in Baclayon, Bohol and Tagbilaran City under its Atharra Residences unit, with about 490 still under construction.

It is also investing in fintech startup company Advance Tech Lending, which partners with employers to extend salary advances to their employees through its “instant credit” platform.

“By providing financial lifeline to employees, the company is helping organizations grow, boost employee morale, and enhance their retention and productivity,” Mr. Solilapsi said.

The two companies are part of ARQCapital’s current portfolio of about 20 high-growth medium enterprises that include renewable energy firms and affordable housing developers.

“The country’s first “smart capital” investor, which provides strategic management direction and other business development tools beyond capital, has deployed about P1.5 billion to more than 35 investees since 2014,” it said.

“ARQ has provided mezzanine financial services to the underserved SMEs since 2016, bridging the capital gap requirements of high-growth entrepreneurs,” the company added. — A.H. Halili

Daisy Ridley to return as Rey in one of three new Star Wars films

LOS ANGELES — Walt Disney Co. on Friday unveiled plans for three new Star Wars movies, including one with Daisy Ridley reprising her role as a Jedi hero in a galaxy far, far away.

Ms. Ridley will play her character, Rey, in a story set 15 years after the events of the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker. The upcoming movie will focus on rebuilding the New Jedi Order as powers rise to tear it down, Disney said.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced the new projects in London at the annual Star Wars Celebration fan convention, where the actress took the stage to confirm her return to the blockbuster franchise.

Disney purchased Star Wars producer Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion and released three hit films from 2015 to 2019 plus several TV series on the Disney+ streaming service.

Fans had been waiting to hear where Star Wars would head on the big screen.

The company had put a pause on new Star Wars movies after Rise of Skywalker. A film that was set to be released this year, Rogue Squadron, was scrapped, as were some others that had been in early development.

The second of the three coming films will delve into the past to tell the story of the first Jedi to wield the Force, Ms. Kennedy said.

The third will be set in the present and chronicle an escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic. It will be led by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, the team behind the popular Star Wars TV series The Mandalorian.

No release dates for the movies were announced. — Reuters

Tripping the electric fantastic

The Kia EV9 takes its place as the flagship electric SUV of the Korea-headquartered car maker. — PHOTO BY KAP MACEDA AGUILA

A glimpse of Kia’s near future at the Seoul Mobility Show

THE 2023 Seoul Mobility Show, featuring over 150 companies from eight countries, welcomed two media delegations from the Philippines last week — one sponsored by Kia, and another by Hyundai. It’s tempting to view this as a continued resurgence of the sibling South Korean-headquartered auto brands in the Philippines, especially since the show is largely geared for local media and attendees.

Kia appropriately chose the venue to fully unveil what will be its flagship electric SUV, the EV9. The Korean domestic market can expect units of the three-row model to roll out by the second quarter, while the rest of the world will slowly get vehicles starting the second half of the year.

Everything is playing to the tune of the brand’s reimagination, said Kia Executive Vice-President and Head of Kia Global Design Karim Habib. “Kia redefined its brand in 2021 and has been steadily working toward developing products that inspire customers as well as services and solutions that add new meaning to our relationships with customers… the EV9, as Korea’s first large electric SUV equipped with innovative technologies and exceptional spatiality, will deliver a driving experience that will completely transform how we view and engage in mobility.”

Over lunch with the media delegation, “Velocity” asked Kia Philippines President Manny Aligada about when the car buyers here can expect the EV9. “We need to meet fundamental technical requirements first. My concern with the EV9 (which is more advanced than the EV6 the company launched recently) is if we don’t get the tech to work.” Fair point, as the Kia EV9 represents the brand’s acceleration of transition to becoming a “sustainable mobility solutions provider” and brings “fresh thinking, design, and technology,” technology that our infrastructure and connectivity just aren’t ready for in their present state.

Still, it’s tempting to see the inevitable future.

The EV9 is based on the Electric Global Modular Platform (or E-GMP), and promises “athletic performance,” to go with a range of over 541 kilometers, according to the WLTP. An ultra-fast 800-volt charging capability can give the EV9 enough juice for 239 kilometers in just 15 minutes.

The front fascia assumes a futuristic look as it boasts diverse lighting elements: a digital pattern lighting grille, small-cube LED projector headlights, and Star Map Signature Lighting for the front LED daytime running lamps (DRLs). Depending on the variant, the SUV may be equipped with 19-inch, 20-inch, or 21-inch aerodynamic wheels.

From the side, the EV9 appears hefty, with the proportions of a “classic SUV.” It gets rather short overhangs as well, surely adding to the space within and to maneuverability. The rear gets the Star Map LED treatment as well, serving to emphasize the width of the vehicle and make it consistent with the front appearance. An angular shoulder line connects with the tailgate panel for a “sophisticated and strong posture,” says Kia.

The car maker adds that the three-row seating is helped along by the flat floor of the E-GMP platform, for more interior space compared to regular internal-combustion-engine-powered models. “The second and third rows can be folded flat, expanding the utility of EV9 for leisure purposes, such as camping, in conjunction with the vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature.” This is made possible through an Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), enabling the discharging of energy from the vehicle battery. Up to 3.68kW can be used to power appliances, charge laptops and such.

Back to the seating, it offers flexibility through four configurations: Bench and three types of standalone seats (Basic, Relaxation, or Swivel [which allows for a face-to-face “meeting” within]). In the cockpit, the EV9 gets a large Panoramic Wide Display that connects a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a five-inch air-conditioning display system, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display system in one seamless screen.

The EV9 is the first Kia to employ a column-type shift-by-wire (SBW) system with an integrated start button “to enable intuitive and simple vehicle operation from ignition to driving and parking.”

The future is clearly on display in the EV9, which boasts Level 3 (conditional) autonomy. It has a Highway Driving Pilot (HDP) and navigation map information on the GT Line variant, and accommodates over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Its autonomous features, which will obviously be available in territories which can accommodate its system demands, utilize 15 sensors, including two lidars — “enabling it to scan for and detect objects in a full 360-degree field of view, enabling it to detect and react to the road and other users to prevent potential collisions.” Users can access the Kia Connect Store to add functionalities as desired.

Additional features are enabled by Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as Remote Smart Parking Assist 2 (RSPA 2), which lets the EV9 to park itself automatically. The driver, whether aboard or outside the vehicle, can initiate the procedure using the Kia Digital Key 2. Ultrasonic sensors are used to detect obstacles, the EV9 is positioned into the designated parking space — with the system governing the accelerator, brakes, and gearshift. When an obstruction is detected, the EV9’s brakes are automatically applied. A Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) is also available to prevent collisions with oncoming vehicles when reversing.

Other advanced features enhancing passenger safety include Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA). A Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) ensures safe driving on highways and automobile-only roads, while Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) enables lane changes and uses a hands-on detection (HOD) sensor to ensure driver engagement.

As the recently launched EV6 will presumably get more interest here in the Philippines, here’s hoping that our country’s electric infrastructure and connectivity capabilities continue to improve to a point when we can have even better electric vehicles.

Yes, like the EV9.

Tax court denies refund claim of manning agency

CTA.JUDICIARY.GOV.PH

THE COURT of Tax Appeals (CTA) has denied BSM Crew Service Centre Philippines’ refund claim worth P4.79 million in supposed excess value-added tax (VAT) on zero-rated sales for 2017.

In a 24-page decision on March 29 and made public on March 31, the CTA Special Third Division said the firm did not show why the commissioner of internal revenue (CIR) should not have denied its refund claim.

“When a judicial claim for refund or tax credit in the CTA is an appeal of an unsuccessful administrative claim, the taxpayer has to convince the CTA that the CIR had no reason to deny its claim,” Associate Justice Maria Belen M. Ringpis-Liban said in the ruling.

“In sum, the petitioner (BSM Crew Service Centre Philippines) failed to prove that its administrative claim should have been granted in the first place.”

The court added the firm failed to establish that its clients were not engaged in trade or business in the Philippines.

“Verily, petitioner fell short in establishing that its sales of services qualify for VAT zero-rating under the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997,” the tribunal said.

BSM Crew Service Centre Philippines is a seafarer manning agency based in Manila, Philippines. As of Jan. 3, the agency is managing about 8,397 active seafarers and 503 maritime vessels, according to its website.

Under the country’s tax code, zero-rated sales are transactions made by VAT-registered taxpayers with foreign clients not doing business in the Philippines. — John Victor D. Ordoñez

Cotabato province joins durian export bandwagon to China

BW FILE PHOTO/MMPADILLO

COTABATO province is joining the China durian export bandwagon following neighboring Davao, which helped open up the market, provincial officials said.

“I hope that the price of durian per kilo to China will be favorable to the farmers,” Governor Emmylou J. Talino-Mendoza said during the April 6 ceremonial dispatch of the first shipment to China.

Ms. Mendoza said participation in the international durian trade will boost the province’s agricultural sector, which is already among the Philippines’ top 10 producers of rice and corn, rubber, banana and coconut, and other high-value crops.

Cotabato’s durian production will be part of the five-year industry development plan that is being mapped out by the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Davao office.

Davao Regional Director Abel James I. Monteagudo said the plan includes increasing technical support and providing quality planting materials and other farm inputs to growers, and establishing post-harvest facilities.

Marila L. Corpuz, Davao agriculture technical director for operations, said the agency is also working out partnerships for expansion to ensure sustained production.

“We have so much demand in China. We are looking into an expansion area and we will partner with some investors to invest in production to maintain the yield,” she said.

“Today, we will be shipping 18 metric tons to China and that is only the beginning, and more durian stakeholders will be partnering with us,” she said.

The DA’s Davao office received on April 3 China’s notice of approval for the Protocol of Phytosanitary Requirements, which was signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. in January during his meeting with Chinese officials led by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Jose D. Cubol, board director of the Durian Industry Association of Davao City, said durian for export to China was priced at P85 per kilo, about five times the P15/k rate they command for domestic sales.

“Exporting durian to China will help boost income,” said Mr. Cubol, an agrarian reform beneficiary who now runs a 28-hectare durian plantation in Davao City’s Calinan District.

Mr. Monteagudo said there is optimism that durian exports to China will open the way for other agricultural commodities.

“We are hopeful that more locally produced fruits, including coconut and bananas, are to be shipped to China in the coming months,” he said. — Maya M. Padillo
