Solar Spikers blast Galeries Tower to advance in PVL quarterfinals

CAPITAL1 SOLAR SPIKERS — PVL

Games Thursday
(Filoil EcoOil Arena)
1 p.m. — Creamline vs ZUS Coffee
3 p.m. — PLDT vs Choco Mucho
5 p.m. — Chery Tiggo vs Petro Gazz

CAPITAL1 Solar import Marina Tushova knew they would need to draw more local production for the Solar Spikers to go that far in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.

Wish granted.

Des Clemente and team captain Jorelle Singh led the locals who responded to Ms. Tushova’s call as Capital1 turned back Galeries Tower, 25-13, 26-28, 25-22, 25-21, Tuesday at the Filoil EcoOil Arena to go into the quarterfinals with a 5-3 record and feeling good about itself.

“We want to help Marina to uplift Capital1,” said Ms. Clemente, a former NCAA Most Valuable Player who scattered 14 points, 11 of which came off attacks while three off blocks.

Prized rookie Leila Cruz likewise played solidly as she contributed nine points.

Of course, Ms. Tushova remained a lethal weapon that she is and unloaded a match-high 35 points that she laced with 31 booming spikes.

Capital1’s emergence fulfilled coach Roger Gorayeb’s vow of competing soon after a forgettable but understandable 1-11 performance when the Mandy and Milka Romero-owned franchise debuted.

The Solar Spikers now await their foes in the knockout quarterfinals where they seek to continue their giant-slaying ways and hopefully deliver the glory that Mr. Gorayeb promised.

Quizon closes in on GM rating as he beats GM Amin

DANIEL QUIZON — PNA.GOV.PH

FILIPINO International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon is eyeing to kill two birds with one stone when he joins the ultra-competitive 30th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival in the United Arab Emirates — earn rating points to claim the Grandmaster (GM) title and warm up for next month’s Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.

The reigning national champion has appeared like he’s close to accomplishing both as he brought down a big gun in GM Bassem Amin of Egypt to stay just half a point off the pace after four rounds of the nine-round tournament Monday night.

Mr. Quizon, seeded just 66th out of 217 participants, was clinical in pulling the rug from under the sixth-seeded Mr. Amin as he locked the doors in the queenside first where the latter was trying to force some action before unleashing a vicious kingside attack that won the former a piece.

When it was over, Mr. Quizon was already two pieces up and on the verge carving up Mr. Amin’s last line of defense before the latter resigned after the 36th move of their Sicilian encounter.

The win sent Mr. Quizon in a 25-player tie at No. 15 with three points, or just a shade behind the lead pack that was being spearheaded by the top seeded Iranian GM Amin Tabatabaeei with 3.5 points apiece.

Mr. Quizon was hoping to sustain his strong play against 13th seed GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov of Uzbekistan in the fifth round at the press time and earn enough rating points to breach the 2500-rating plateau that would seal him the GM title outright.

So far, Mr. Quizon has a live rating of 2469.1 from 2457 before the event started.

Mr. Quizon is also preparing for the Olympiad slated Sept. 10 to 22 in the Hungarian capital where he will join the national team consisting also of GMs Inno Sadorra and John Paul Gomez and IMs Paolo Bersamina and Jem Garcia with GM Eugene Torre as their non-playing coach. — Joey Villar

Caitlin Clark sets rookie record as Fever top Storm

REUTERS

KELSEY MITCHELL poured in 27 points and Caitlin Clark broke a nearly 30-year-old rookie assist record as the host Indiana Fever topped the Seattle Storm 92-75 on Sunday afternoon.

Ms. Clark finished with 23 points, and her nine assists gave her 231 for the season, the most by a rookie since Ticha Penicheiro racked up 225 for the Sacramento Monarchs, one of the league’s original eight franchises.

Ms. Clark set the record early in the third quarter when she made a long pass up the floor to Mitchell for a layup and a 40-34 lead.

Lexie Hull was on fire from long range, making six 3-pointers and scoring 22 points, both career highs, as Indiana (13-15) salvaged its final game against Seattle after three losses this season. The Fever also matched their win total from a year ago. Ms. Hull was 6 of 7 from long range.

Seattle (17-10) got 26 points from Jewell Loyd and 15 from Skylar Diggins-Smith. Nneka Ogwumike finished with 14 points on 5 of 15 shooting and contributed nine rebounds. The Storm have lost two straight.

Seattle trailed 35-34 at the half and 59-58 at the end of three after a 3-point attempt by Sami Whitcomb bounced off the rim as time expired.

Aliyah Boston’s jumper with 5:51 to go in the game gave the Fever their largest lead up to that point at 75-65, and Indiana created even more separation when Ms. Hull hit her final 3-pointer with 4:09 to go, stretching the lead to 81-69.

Indiana missed its first six 3-pointers of the day but finished 15 of 25 the rest of the way.

Seattle made five 3-pointers in the first half and shot just 7-of-21 overall from long range.

The Fever took command of the game in the fourth, outscoring the Storm 33-17. They led by as many as 19. — Reuters

UAAP will have a home of its own soon

ASYA DESIGN

NO place like home.

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) soon will have a home of its own following a trailblazing partnership with Akari Lighting and Technology Corp., in building a 6,000-seater arena set to rise in 2027 in Pasig.

To be called “Home of the UAAP,” the first-of-its-kind permanent arena for any league in the country will begin construction next year after both parties signed the memorandum of agreement on Monday at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman in Quezon City.

It’s a perfect kickoff for the UAAP approaching the highly-anticipated opener of Season 87 next month to be hosted by UP. “The Home of the UAAP is not just for the league itself; it is for the student-athletes who represent the heart and soul of the UAAP. This is their home — a place where they can compete, grow, and thrive,” said UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag.

“It will go down in the annals of Philippine sports history. A home we can call our own. There is no place like home,” added Mr. Saguisag, joined by Akari Chief Executive Officer Christopher Tiu, UAAP Season 87 Chairman and UP President Atty. Angelo Jimenez, UP Diliman Chancellor Atty. Edgardo Carlo Vistan and negotiating panel head Fr. Aldrin Suan, CM, of Adamson University, in the grand signing to usher a new era for the collegiate league.

Located at the 1.8-hectare real estate in Pasig, the UAAP Arena is a project by Asya Design, one of the country’s top architectural firms, led by chief architect Albert Yu, that will have a three-year construction timeline.

The arena is already on the final stage of ‘schematic planning’ followed by the bidding and construction proper in the next two seasons before being fully operational for games in Season 90.

It sports an 8-shape building design to represent all the member schools, which will have their own lighting colors as an outside landscape during games. “At Akari, we believe in building legacies that go beyond lighting solutions. This Home of the UAAP project is our way of supporting grassroots sports development, where young student-athletes can grow, excel, and shine on the national stage. I am honored that Akari is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of varsity sports in the Philippines,” said Mr. Tiu as Akari leveled up its Philippine sports venture after entry to the PVL and support to the PNVF.

Aside from an arena, which will be open for accommodation of other leagues like the PBA, PVL, NCAA and national sporting events, it will also have office and commercial spaces including the league’s permanent headquarters.

All indoor and some elimination games of the UAAP will be held at the new arena but the marquee matches, playoffs and championships, especially of the staple basketball and volleyball events, will still be at the Araneta Coliseum and MOA Arena.

The Bangkok Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games canceled

THE 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) supposedly set November 21 to 30 in Bangkok and Chonburi, Thailand has been canceled.

It was announced Monday night by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) citing the breakdown of sponsorship commitments by Thai organizers caused by the country’s recent shift of government.

“As per the decision of the OCA executive board, the games are canceled and the next edition will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the dates of which will be finalized shortly and sent to all concerned,” in an OCA letter signed by its acting president Raja Randhir Singh.

It was the third time the AIMAG was shelved and in this last one was with finality.

The Filipinos were actually looking forward to the event after snaring two gold medals courtesy of Meggie Ochoa and Annie Ramirez in jiu-jitsu and 14 silver and the same number of bronze medals in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2017.

The country was supposed to field in 421 athletes seeing action in 37 of the 41 sports disciplines.

It was supposed to be the next big tournament for the Filipinos following their momentous two-gold, two-bronze haul in the Paris Olympics a few weeks ago.

Cannot be counted out

The Aces finally got back on track with a victory over the Sparks the other day, and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. They had hitherto bookended a month-long break due to the Summer Games with losses to the underdog Sky and the pacesetting Liberty, leading head coach Becky Hammon to lament their seeming lack of purpose. Dribbling in place was what she effectively said her charges had done in taking the L, underscoring an alarming tendency to play hero ball at the expense of collective pursuits.

Significantly, the Aces’ latest triumph was far from guaranteed, what with the Sparks having already taken their measure twice so far through their 2024 campaign. Notwithstanding the cellar-dwelling status of the opposition, the defending champions were previously trumped by motivation borne of Dearica Hamby’s personal cause against them. This time around, through, their superior talent shone through; A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray, Olympians all, made sure to take care of business early and often, culminating in a 16-point win.

It bears noting that Hammon’s positive comments in her post-mortem were interspersed with her emphatic denial of wrongdoing in connection with the federal lawsuit Hamby just filed against the Aces (and the Women’s National Basketball Association). Even setting aside an active probe against them for the improper provision of benefits to players in contravention of the collective bargaining agreement, the case cannot but be an additional hurdle in their quest for a third straight title.

The good news is that Wilson has never performed better. And so transcendent has she been that she is assured of taking home her third Most Valuable Player award three-fifths into the season. No one else comes close, and with Plum, Young, and Gray backstopping her, the Aces cannot be counted out. The cream rises to the top, especially in a drawn-out series. And unless and until they are formally ousted in the playoffs, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Mpox is not the new COVID — WHO

A patient whose skin displayed a number of lesions due to what had been an active case of monkeypox. — CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION

BERLIN — A World Health Organization (WHO) official stressed on Tuesday that mpox, regardless of whether it is the new or old strain, is not the new COVID, as authorities know how to control its spread.

“We can and must tackle mpox together,” said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, at a media briefing.

“So will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or we will enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world,” he added.

Mpox, a viral infection that causes pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is usually mild but can kill.

The clade 1b variety of mpox has triggered global concern because it seems to spread more easily though routine close contact. A case of the variant was confirmed last week in Sweden and linked to a growing outbreak in Africa.

Mr. Kluge said that the focus on the new clade 1 strain gives Europe a chance to refocus on the less severe clade 2 variety, including better public health advice and surveillance.

About 100 new cases of the clade 2 mpox strain are now being reported in the European region every month, added Mr. Kluge. — Reuters

Emergent to donate 50,000 vaccine doses to address mpox outbreak in Africa

EMERGENT BioSolutions said on Monday it would donate 50,000 doses of its smallpox vaccine to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other impacted countries of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda to address the current mpox outbreak.

The World Health Organization last week declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years as a new variant of the virus, known as clade Ib, spread rapidly in Africa. At least one person in Sweden has been confirmed with the infection, marking the first time the new variant has been seen outside of Africa.

Emergent’s ACAM2000 vaccine, approved for smallpox, has been used as an mpox shot but the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is yet to approve its application for use against the virus.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ACAM2000, a live, replicating virus vaccine, has more known side effects and risks than Danish biotech Bavarian Nordic A/S’s Jynneos vaccine, which is approved in the US for both smallpox and mpox.

ACAM2000 is known to cause myocarditis/pericarditis — swelling in or around the heart muscle — in 1 in 175 new ACAM2000 vaccine recipients, according to the FDA.

Instead of an injection, the shot is given via a series of small pokes on the skin using a two-pronged needle. The injection site forms a scab, which takes 2-4 weeks to heal. Until the scab falls off, it could spread live virus to other parts of the body or people.

Biden hails Harris as DNC’s future in emotional farewell speech

US PRESIDENT JOSEPH R. BIDEN — WHITEHOUSE.GOV

CHICAGO — President Joseph R. Biden cemented the Democratic Party’s elevation of Kamala Harris to lead the fight for the White House against Republican Donald Trump with a convention speech on Monday that praised his vice president as the best hope for preserving American democracy.

Mr. Biden took center stage on opening night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), drawing an extended standing ovation from the party faithful and delivering a farewell speech to the party he has served for half a century — even with five months left in office.

Wiping away tears after being introduced by his daughter Ashley, Mr. Biden waved to the crowd that held signs saying, “We (heart) Biden.” Beaming, he responded, “I love YOU.”

“Are you ready to vote for freedom? Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America? Let me ask you, are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?” Mr. Biden said.

Taking multiple swipes at Mr. Trump, Mr. Biden promised to be the “best volunteer” Ms. Harris and Minnesota Governor Mr. Walz, her vice presidential running mate, had ever seen.

Mr. Biden’s address in Chicago kicked off a four-day event fueled by enthusiasm for Ms. Harris and relief that Mr. Biden abandoned his own reelection bid and endorsed her to replace him.

The president’s reluctant decision to step aside on July 21 came after heavy pressure from party leaders who worried the 81-year-old incumbent was too old to win or serve four more years.

“I love the job, but I love my country more,” he said, drawing chants of “We love Joe.”

Mr. Biden, who was No. 2 to the nation’s first Black president, Barack Obama, is urging Democrats to unite behind a candidate who, if triumphant on Nov. 5, would become the first woman, who is also Black and South Asian, to be elected US president.

Ms. Harris is riding a historic whirlwind into the convention: her campaign has broken fundraising records, packed arenas with supporters, and turned opinion polls in some battleground states in Democrats’ favor.

She joined Mr. Biden onstage for a hug after he finished his address on Monday.

Mr. Biden had hoped just a month ago to deliver a high-profile speech later this week to accept the Democratic nomination for another four-year term. Instead, he will travel to California for a vacation.

Mr. Biden dropped his reelection bid after his disastrous debate performance against Mr. Trump on June 27 prompted longtime allies, major donors and other party supporters to demand he step aside.

In his speech, Mr. Biden touted his administration’s accomplishments — boosting the US economy and strengthening US alliances abroad — and made the case for Americans to elect Ms. Harris as his White House successor.

He condemned the racism and white supremacy that continue to plague America, saying they had no place in the nation.

He contrasted Ms. Harris the prosecutor with Mr. Trump, a convicted felon, and catalogued what he called the former president’s foreign policy failures, accusing him of bowing down to Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaving NATO in tatters.

Mr. Biden rapped Mr. Trump for calling the United States a failing nation. “He’s the loser,” he said with fervor.

Unlike most speakers earlier in the program, Mr. Biden acknowledged the anger of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters that gathered outside the convention hall on Monday, saying he has been working nonstop to achieve a ceasefire.

“Those protesters out in the street, they have a point,” he said. “A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides.”

Earlier in the day, thousands of protesters assembled at a nearby park to pressure delegates to drop the party’s military support for Israel’s Gaza offensive.

The pro-Palestinian protesters were fewer than the tens of thousands that organizers had predicted, but a splinter group left the main march and breached a security perimeter near the convention center, drawing riot police who detained four people.

HARRIS CAMEO
Earlier in the evening, Ms. Harris, 59, made a surprise appearance, drawing cheers from the crowd as she vowed to defeat Mr. Trump.

“Let us fight for the ideals we hold dear and let us always remember, when we fight we win!” Ms. Harris said to the roar of the crowd. She will formally accept the nomination on Thursday.

Democrats also cheered their failed 2016 presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, whose loss to Mr. Trump in 2016 dashed hopes of installing the first woman in the White House.

Ms. Clinton, who became the first woman to secure a major US party’s presidential nomination, drew a standing ovation as she took the stage on Monday.

“The story of my life and the history of our country is that progress is possible, but not guaranteed,” said Ms. Clinton, who also lost her bid for the 2008 nomination to Obama.

She commended Mr. Biden as restoring decency, dignity and competency to the White House.

“And now, we are writing a new chapter in America’s story,” Ms. Clinton said. “Kamala has the character, experience and vision to lead us forward.”

Ms. Clinton took several shots at her former nemesis. “Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial, and when he woke up, he made his own kind of history, the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions,” she said to laughter. — Reuters

Trump posts image of fake endorsement  from Taylor Swift

TAYLOR SWIFT: The Eras Tour

LOS ANGELES — Former President Donald Trump has posted a fake social media image of pop superstar Taylor Swift asking people to vote for him in the November election.

A Sunday entry by the Republican candidate on Truth Social showed Ms. Swift dressed in red, white and blue with a caption that said “Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump.”

“I accept!” Mr. Trump wrote.

Ms. Swift has not publicly endorsed a candidate in the 2024 race but has supported Democrats in the past.

The singer backed President Joseph R. Biden and running mate Kamala Harris in 2020. Ms. Harris is set to be formally nominated as the 2024 Democratic candidate at the party’s national convention in Chicago this week. Ms. Swift also criticized Mr. Trump in a 2020 documentary.

A spokesperson for Ms. Swift did not respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Trump also posted photos of young women wearing “Swifties for Trump” shirts, and a satirical article with the headline “Swifties Turning to Trump After ISIS Foiled Taylor Swift Concert.” The article was marked “SATIRE” above the headline.

Ms. Swift canceled three shows in Vienna this month after authorities said they had foiled a planned attack. Local officials arrested a 19-year-old man who they said was inspired by Islamic State.

“Swifties for Trump is a massive movement that grows bigger every single day,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement when asked for comment about the fake Swift image.

Several Swift fans and watchdog groups said many of the images posted by Mr. Trump appeared to be deepfakes generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

Advocates in the music industry, Hollywood and Washington have been pushing for federal legislation and other measures to fight the explosion of fake AI images online.

Mr. Trump’s post was “yet another example of AI’s power to create misinformation,” consumer group Public Citizen said.

“The potential harm to our society that could result from such misinformation, including abuses of our elections, are wide-reaching and immensely damaging,” the group added. — Reuters

UK tycoon who defeated fraud case is missing at sea

EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG

LONDON — Mike Lynch, the tech tycoon missing after his luxury yacht sank off Sicily, spent more than a decade building Britain’s biggest software company and then almost as long again fighting fraud charges related to its multi-billion pound sale.

Mr. Lynch founded Autonomy from his ground-breaking research at Cambridge University in 1996, and was lauded by shareholders, scientists and politicians when he sold it to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion 15 years later.

But in late 2012, HP stunned Wall Street and the City of London by alleging a massive accounting scandal at the business, and writing off $8.8 billion of its value.

Mr. Lynch, known for an abrasive intellectual charm, said HP did not know what it was doing with Autonomy, which searched and organized data using patented algorithms based on a mathematics developed in the 18th Century by Reverend Thomas Bayes.

He spent the next 12 years in courts trying to clear his name, locked in some of the biggest legal battles in corporate history.

HP pursued Mr. Lynch in London’s High Court for $5 billion. It won most of its case in 2022 and is still awaiting the award of damages.

The judge found that Mr. Lynch and another colleague had fraudulently concealed a “fire sale” of hardware and engaged in convoluted reselling schemes to mask a shortfall in sales of Autonomy’s software, the business HP coveted.

US authorities filed criminal charges including wire fraud and conspiracy against Mr. Lynch and sought his extradition.

The British government came under pressure from Mr. Lynch’s supporters to block the application. If found guilty, Mr. Lynch could have faced decades in jail.

But the appeals failed, and Mr. Lynch took the stand in San Francisco in his own defense, where he denied wrongdoing and told jurors that HP had botched the integration of Autonomy.

He was acquitted on all charges and freed after a year under house arrest. Mr. Lynch said he was “elated.”

“I am looking forward to returning to the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

VIOLENT STORM
A person familiar with the rescue effort said Mr. Lynch and his wife, Angela Bacares, were on the 56-meter (184-ft) long British-registered Bayesian sailboat when it was struck by an unexpectedly violent storm and sank off the Sicilian capital Palermo early on Monday.

The yacht was owned by Mr. Lynch’s family and had 22 people on board when it sank just before sunrise.

Mr. Lynch was born in 1965 and was raised in Chelmsford near London where his mother was a nurse and his father a fireman. He said his parents instilled in him an appreciation of the value of education.

At Cambridge University, he studied physics, mathematics and biochemistry, and went on to research signal processing for his doctorate. His thesis is still one of the most widely consulted in the university’s library, reports have said.

In 1996, Mr. Lynch founded Autonomy which searched and organized complex data such as emails, phones calls and video.

Mr. Lynch, who has a herd of rare breed cattle on his estate in Suffolk, East England, used some of the proceeds of the sale of Autonomy to set up venture capital firm Invoke.
