Davao investment meet focuses on ‘future-proofing’ the economy

BW FILE PHOTO

THIS years Davao Investment Conference (Davao ICON) will take stock of the regions strengths such as agriculture and tourism, and ensuring long-term growth for these primary sectors.

Now on its 7th year, the conference will focus on manufacturing, agro-processing, tourism, innovation/information and communications technology, property development, human capital build-up, and sustainability training as key investment areas.

We will focus on these industries as drivers of growth of Davao’s economy. It shows how diversified our economywe all have these industries already flourishing today,Nicole Hao Bian-Ledesma, chairperson of Davao ICON 2023, said in a recent media forum.

Davao regions economy grew by 8.1% in 2022, valued at P954.1 billion from about P882.2 billion the previous year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority regional performance report released in April.

Last years performance had surpassed the pre-pandemic level of P53.2 billion pesos recorded in 2019.

Accommodation and food service activities grew the fastest at 35.6%, followed by transportation and storage at 28.7%.

The services sector accounted for 59.9% of the regions economy, followed by industry at 24.8%, and agriculture at 15.3%.

John Carlo B. Tria, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said future-proofing the economy means attracting the kind of investments that will create sustainable growth and retain the regions human resources.

We believe that the future will demand that your investment are not just temporary because otherwise how can you attract talents to stay, for example, our children,he said.

If you are just going to attract investments that are for like a summer job, then chances are they will leave Davao,he added.

Ms. Ledesma said this years gathering will also be more diversified, and inclusiveby showcasing the major conglomerates alongside homegrown brands as well as women and young entrepreneurs, and start-ups.

At least 500 participants from the private and public sectors and 35 exhibitors are expected to join the Davao ICON 2023, which will be held on July 17-19 at the SMX Convention Center. Maya M. Padillo

Conflict with the US would be an ‘unbearable disaster,’ says China

CARLOS DE SOUZA-UNSPLASH

SINGAPORE — Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu told Asia’s top security summit on Sunday that conflict with the United States would be an “unbearable disaster” but that his country sought dialogue over confrontation.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Mr. Li said the world was big enough for China and the US to grow together — remarks made days after he refused to meet his US counterpart for direct talks.

“China and the US have different systems and are different in many other ways,” he said in a speech that marked his first significant international address since he was named China’s Minister of National Defense in March.

“However, this should not keep the two sides from seeking common ground and common interests to grow bilateral ties and deepen cooperation,” he said. “It is undeniable that a severe conflict or confrontation between China and the US will be an unbearable disaster for the world.”

Wearing the general’s uniform of the People’s Liberation Army, Mr. Li made his address on the 34th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Ties between Washington and Beijing are badly strained over a range of issues, including democratically governed Taiwan, territorial disputes in the South China Sea and President Joseph R. Biden’s restrictions on semiconductor chip exports.

As delegates at the summit debated the risks of accidents and miscalculations amid those tensions, the US Navy said a Chinese destroyer made “unsafe” maneuvers near a US warship in the Taiwan Straits on Saturday, highlighting the dangers.

China’s military criticized the United States and Canada for “deliberately provoking risk” after their warships staged a rare joint sailing through the sensitive strait.

US Indo-Pacific Command said US and Canadian ships were operating routinely and under high-seas freedoms.

Canadian defense minister Anita Anand said that Canada would continue to sail where international law allows, including the Strait, and that “actors in this region must engage responsibly”.

In his speech, Li said China would not allow such freedom-of-navigation patrols by the United States and its allies to be “a pretext to exercise hegemony of navigation.”

After his remarks, regional scholars asked Li repeatedly about the incident as well as China’s extensive maritime deployments in the disputed South China Sea. He did not answer them directly, saying moves by countries outside the region were raising tensions.

Richard Marles, Australian deputy prime minister and defense minister, said his country’s efforts to improve its military capabilities and presence in the region were aimed at “playing our part in contributing to the collective security of the Pacific and the maintenance of the rules-based order”.

“It is a point I made that we have repeatedly made to the region and to the world since we announced the optimal pathway to acquiring nuclear powered submarine capability,” he said on the sidelines of the security meeting, referring to the AUKUS pact with the United States and Britain.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin rebuked China in a speech at the summit on Saturday for refusing to hold military talks, leaving the superpowers deadlocked over their differences.

Austin said dialogue “is not a reward, but a necessity”.

Li was more restrained in his address, although he took thinly veiled digs at the United States, accusing “some countries” of intensifying an arms race and wilfully interfering in the internal affairs of others.

“A Cold War mentality is now resurgent, greatly increasing security risks,” he said. “Mutual respect should prevail over bullying and hegemony.”

Li, sanctioned by the United States in 2018 over weapons purchases from Russia, shook hands with Austin at a dinner on Friday but the two have not had a deeper discussion, despite repeated US demands for more military exchanges.

Alongside the speeches and panel discussions, senior intelligence officials from both sides attended a secret meeting of spy chiefs in Singapore on the fringes of the summit, Reuters reported on Sunday.

After Li’s speech, retired veteran Chinese diplomat Cui Tiankai urged the United States to ease military deployments close to China in an act of “good faith” if high-level defense talks between the two superpowers are to resume.

Chong Ja Ian, a political scientist at the National University of Singapore, said that Li’s approach and tone appeared gentler than that of Chinese positions stated at previous summits but that “the content was the same”.

“It was a reflection of the distance between the US and the PRC, which also suggests that any hope that there will be some resolution is naive. US, PRC competition is here to stay,” he said. — Reuters

Two swimmers initiate the gold medal rush for Team Philippines

ERNIE GAWILAN

PHNOM PENH — A battle-scarred swimming duo, a tested thrower and a glory-seeking power lifter put on a magnificent show to fuel the Philippines’ early gold rush in the 12th ASEAN Para Games at different venues here at the Cambodian capital on Sunday.

Paralympians Gary Bejino and Ernie Gawilan delivered the country’s first two gold medals with the former reigning supreme in the men’s 400-meter freestyle S6 in five minutes and 38.26 seconds and the latter in the 400m freestyle S7 where he timed in 4:58.78.

It was a record-breaking effort for the 27-year-old Mr. Bejino as he shattered the old mark of 6:07.99 set by Aung Myint Myat of Myanmar, who saw action here but wound up with a silver i9n 6:04.17, six years ago in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Mr. Bejino, a Tabaco, Albay native who also scheduled to compete in the 200m, 100m and 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly and 4x100m medley relay where he and Mr. Gawilan leading the squad.

Cendy Asusano, for her part, owned the training field at the Morodok Techno National Stadium and seized the gold in the women’s shot put F54 where she heaved 5.77m and bested Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy and another Philippine bet Marites Burce, who took the silver and bronze with a 5.48m and 4.84m, respectively.

The 33-year-old Ms. Asusano vowed to add two more mints in javelin today and discus throw Wednesday.

Ms. Asusano, who had already sniped a total of six gold in all including three in Kuala Lumpur in 2017 and two last year in Surakarta, Indonesia.

Over at the National Paralympic Committee Hall, Marydol Pamati-an finally hit it big after a long search and struck gold in the women’s 41-kilogram division.

She could have snatched a second one but settled for a silver after she lost via tiebreak to Indonesian Eneng Paridah even though they both had the best lift of 75kg.

Achelle Guion, a Paralympic veteran, chipped in a couple of silver in the women’s 45kg division.

Also at the pool, Ariel Joseph Alegarbes, the flag-bearer and a triple gold winner in Surakarta, pocketed the silver in the 100m breaststroke SB14 with a clocking of 1:13.59.

Malaysian Mohd Adib Igbal Abdullah captured the gold in 1:09.54 while Singapore’s Darren Wei Siang Chan the bronze in 1:18.82.

In chess at the Royal University, Sander Severino and the extraordinary Filipino woodpushers continued to inch closer to gold as they led in three of the six classes in rapid.

Mr. Severino, who is out to equal if not improve on a quadruple-gold haul last time, drew with fellow FIDE Master Maksum Firdaus of Indonesia to share the lead in the men’s PI class with countryman Henry Lopez, a winner over teammate Jasper Rom, with 3.5 points apiece after four rounds in this six-round meet.

Also in gold contention were Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza, who currently leads the women’s PI division with 3.5 points, and Darry Bernardo, who won all his first four games including one over Indonesia’s Gayuh Satrio to jump to the top with a full one-point lead. — Joey Villar

Gilas Pilipinas remains my big priority — Sotto

KAI SOTTO — PHILSTAR FILE PHOTO

KAI Sotto yesterday insisted that Gilas Pilipinas remains a big priority even as he’s vigorously pursuing his NBA dreams.

“I’ve never said no to playing for my country ‘coz that’s my dream since I started playing basketball,” Mr. Sotto told the Power & Play program on One PH of former PBA commissioner Noli Eala.

“My top 2 dreams are to make it to the NBA and represent the national team,” he added.

The 7-foot-3 slotman made the statement amid talks casting doubts on his participation in the Gilas pool that starts its buildup for the FIBA World Cup this week.

Mr. Sotto recently attended a mini camp for the Utah Jazz and is looking to join more in his efforts to crack the NBA.

“I’ve been representing my country since I was 14 years old. I don’t get what other people are saying about me not wanting to join (Gilas) blah, blah blah. I’m trying not to listen to it and just focusing on the now,” he reiterated.

Mr. Sotto said his sports agent, Tony Ronzone of Wasserman, will handle the talks with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

Gilas is set to start WC workouts in Manila on Wednesday with trips to Europe for camps and tuneup matches against quality opposition in the pipeline later on.

Mr. Sotto’s former frontcourt partner with Gilas Youth, AJ Edu, is already in town to serve duties with the Gilas World Cup pool.

Swiatek serves up double bagel as Gauff, Rune, Ruud race to 4th round

IGA SWIATEK

PARIS — Defending champion Iga Swiatek continued her imperious, merciless march towards a third French Open title in four years with a 6-0 6-0 humiliation of Wang Xinyu on Saturday to reach the fourth round.

The world number one swept her Chinese opponent aside in 51 minutes with a potential quarter-final clash against Coco Gauff, who she demolished in last year’s final, looming.

Ms. Gauff ended the run of fellow teenager Mirra Andreeva with a 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1 victory, recovering from a tough start against the 16-year-old Russian.

Should they get through the next round against unseeded opponents, Ms. Gauff and Ms. Swiatek will play a re-match of last year’s final in which the American, seeded sixth this year, fell victim to the huge pressure on her shoulders and the metronomic game of the Pole.

Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur overcame a first-set scare against Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic to prevail 4-6 6-4 6-2 as experience prevailed on court Suzanne Lenglen.

The seventh seed was far from her best, but she did enough to advance as she was cheered by dozens of flag-waving Tunisian fans.

Earlier, the tournament lost one of its main contenders for the women’s title as fourth seed Elena Rybakina pulled out ahead of her third-round meeting with Sara Sorribes Tormo due to illness.

In the men’s draw, Holger Rune took a step closer to becoming Denmark’s first male Grand Slam singles champion when he powered past Argentine qualifier Genaro Alberto Olivieri 6-4 6-1 6-3.

In the distance is a possible repeat of last year’s quarter-finals as Norway’s Casper Ruud overcame a slow start to down Zhang Zhizhen of China 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-4 and reach the fourth round.

Tiafoe’s exit ended US presence in the men’s draw as Taylor Fritz, with the crowd against him again after he shushed them repeatedly following his win against local favorite Arthur Rinderknech. — Reuters

Manchester City edges closer to treble after FA Cup final win over Manchester United

MANCHESTER City moved to within one victory of completing a momentous treble as they deservedly beat arch-rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s record-breaking double on Saturday.

City captain Mr. Gundogan scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history with a stunning volley after 12 seconds and struck what proved to be the winner seven minutes after halftime.

In doing so the 32-year-old, who is expected to leave City in the summer after seven trophy-laden years, became the oldest player to score an FA Cup final brace since Nat Lofthouse for Bolton Wanderers in 1958, also against United.

United, seeking to win both domestic cups in the same season for the first time in their history and wreck City’s hopes of emulating their own historic 1999 treble, had levelled with a 33rd-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty.

Pep Guardiola’s side resisted some late United pressure to win the trophy for a seventh time.

It is the 13th time the English league and FA Cup double has been achieved. But City now want more and travel to Istanbul to face Inter Milan seeking to be crowned European champions for the first time and to equal United’s 1998-99 Premier League/FA Cup/Champions League sweep under Alex Ferguson.

BRAGGING RIGHTS
For the first time in 190 meetings the clubs were clashing for silverware, and not just bragging rights, and Wembley was decked in red and sky blue as fans braved rail strikes to descend en masse on the capital.

Smoke from the pre-match pyrotechnics had not even cleared when City took the lead in spectacular fashion.

Keeper Stefan Ortega’s long punt towards Erling Haaland and as the ball bounced into the path of Mr. Gundogan who did not hesitate to send a dipping right-foot volley arcing over a transfixed David de Gea.

It eclipsed the previous fastest FA Cup final goal scored by Louis Saha after 25 seconds for Everton against Chelsea in 2009 and City threatened to run riot against a stunned United.

Rodri and Jack Grealish both failed to convert good chances in the opening five minutes in which United barely touched the ball while Mr. Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne also went close for City before United were handed an unexpected gift.

United right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka headed a diagonal ball harmlessly across the area and as play continued referee Paul Tierney was instructed to check a pitch-side VAR monitor for a possible handball by Mr. Grealish.

It was extremely harsh on Mr. Grealish, but Tierney pointed to the spot and Fernandes calmly shuffled up to send Ortega the wrong way with his penalty and spark celebrations at the east end of the stadium where United’s fans were packed.

But it proved an illusion. City needed slightly longer in the second half to re-establish their superiority and again it was Mr. Gundogan displaying his knack of scoring crucial goals.

This time he was picked out by Mr. De Bruyne’s chipped pass and his left-foot volley, not struck anywhere near as perfectly as his earlier effort, bounced its way through a crowded area and crept inside Mr. De Gea’s right-hand post.

Mr. Gundogan was denied a hat-trick by an offside flag and as the minutes ticked down City looked edgy with United substitute Alejandro Garnacho curling a shot agonisingly wide and a crazy goalmouth scramble in stoppage time ended with the ball bouncing off City’s crossbar.

For United they can console themselves with a League Cup trophy in manager Erik Ten Hag’s encouraging first season and will hope Inter can stop City next Saturday. — Reuters

NBA Finals: Heat big underdogs entering Game 2 in Denver

THE Miami Heat entered the playoffs as the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference but are in an unfamiliar position ahead of Game 2 of the NBA Finals — down 1-0.

Despite starting every series in this year’s playoffs on the road, the Heat managed to win the first game in each of their first three series. That certainly wasn’t the case in Game 1 on Thursday, when the Denver Nuggets won Game 1 of the finals in convincing fashion, 104-93.

The Heat will attempt to even the series in Game 2 on Sunday in Denver, and they will again be heavy underdogs.

Denver is an 8.5-point favorite at BetMGM, where the Nuggets have been backed by 55 percent of the spread-line bets and 59 percent of the money. However, Miami’s +300 moneyline has been a popular bet, with the public backing the Heat with 72 and 60 percent of the action, respectively.

WHAT IT MEANS
Miami has lost four of its past five games overall and is facing a deficit for the first time in these playoffs.

“That was one of my last messages to the group before our game,” Denver coach Michael Malone said after his team improved to 9-0 at home in the playoffs on Thursday.

“I reminded our group, if they didn’t know, that Miami went into Milwaukee (in the first round) and won Game 1. They went into the Garden in New York City (in the second round) and won Game 1. They won Game 1 up in Boston (in the Eastern Conference finals). So, we did not want them coming in here taking control of the series on our court.”

PROPPED UP
Nuggets star Nikola Jokic was the most popular prop bet ahead of Game 1 and went on to reward the public’s confidence in him with his ninth triple-double of the playoffs. That includes six in his past seven games after collecting 27 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds in Game 1.

“The most important thing is to win a game,” Jokic said. “I’m trying to win a game in any possible way.”

KEY STAT
Denver made 16 of its 20 free-throw attempts in Game 1, which was significantly better than Miami’s all-too-brief performance at the line.

The Heat went to the charity stripe on just two occasions to set an NBA postseason record for fewest free-throw attempts in a game.

“Things have to be done with a lot more intention and a lot more pace, a lot more detail,” Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We are an aggressive, attacking team, and so if we are not getting those kind of opportunities at the rim or at the free throw line, we have to find different ways to be able to do it.”

THEY SAID IT
Heat star Jimmy Butler had only 13 points in Game 1 to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. He did not make it to the foul line a single time.

“You’ve got to attack and attack everybody, not just one individual. I have to do a better job of creating the help, one, two guys, and getting to my shooter, otherwise finishing at the rim, making shots,” he said.

“But we missed a lot, and we’ll be better in Game 2. At the end of the day, that’s what it is, and we’ll take this and we’ll learn from it.” — Reuters

Messi to leave PSG at end of season after two years at the club

PARIS — Lionel Messi will leave Paris St Germain at the end of season after two years at the Ligue 1 club, Paris St Germain said on Saturday.

PSG host Clermont in the final round of Ligue 1 later on Saturday.

“After two seasons in the French capital, Leo Messi’s adventure with Paris St Germain will come to an end at the conclusion of the 2022–23 campaign,” PSG said in a statement.

Messi’s future at PSG had been the subject of much speculation recently, with a source close to the Argentina captain telling Reuters that he had received a formal offer to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal next season.

He has also been linked in the media with a move back to boyhood club Barcelona, with the United States’ Major League Soccer club Inter Miami also being touted as a possible destination.

“I would like to thank Leo Messi for his two seasons in Paris. To see a seven-time Ballon d’Or winner in the Rouge & Bleu and at Parc des Princes, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and inspiring our younger players has been a pleasure,” PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi said in the club’s sta

“His contribution to Paris Saint-Germain and Ligue 1 cannot be understated and we wish Leo and his family all the best for the future.”

While he has 21 goals and 20 assists for PSG in all competitions this season, Messi failed to have a big impact at PSG and in his two seasons at the club, could not help them go past the last 16 in the Champions League. — Reuters

Underdogs

The Heat didn’t look at all like vast underdogs when they met members of the media following Game One of the National Basketball Association Finals. It didn’t matter that they headed into the set-to with long odds, and that they then lost it after having trailed for all but its first three minutes. In so doing, they shone the spotlight on the gravity of the challenge before them given their overmatched roster. Moreover, they were handicapped by conditions on the road; they not only had to deal with the raucous crowd of 19,528, but likewise needed to cope with the higher altitude in Ball Arena.

Yet, for all the hurdles, the Heat remain confident in their capacity to emerge from their series against the Nuggets with the title. And for quite a few quarters, their steadfast belief in themselves may be a reflection of irrational behavior. Not to them, though; regardless of how it is viewed, the unshakable self-assurance has precisely been their fuel throughout the 2023 Playoffs. They had to go through two play-in contests just to get the eighth seed, and then made short work of the vaunted Bucks before outlasting the Knicks and Celtics en route to the Finals — all contrary to prognoses.

Indeed, it’s fair to contend that the Heat are far removed from their regular season versions. If nothing else, they’ve proven that they deserve to vie for the hardware just as much as the Nuggets do. Which is why they cannot be disabused of the notion that they have what it takes to win four of the next six games in order to be crowned champions. That said, they still need to turn their thoughts to action, and for them to have a chance today, they will have to perform much, much better than they did in the Finals opener.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra isn’t stupid; he knows the enormity of the task at hand. At the same time, he isn’t backing down from the test because he has seen his charges succeed in the face of adversity. Forget that their march to history will require them to not merely hold fort at the Kaseya Center, where they’ve lost their last two outings. They are likewise compelled to prevail in hostile territory at least once, and they won’t be anywhere close to meeting their objective today if they don’t improve from their Game One showing.

Bottom line, the Heat know who and what they’re up against in the Finals, and while they don’t have a say in the former, they can certainly address the latter. How they do from here on is up to them.

Biden signs debt limit bill, pulls US back from brink of default

WASHINGTON — President Joseph R. Biden on Saturday signed a bill that suspends the US government’s $31.4-trillion debt ceiling, averting what would have been a first-ever default with just two days to spare.

The House of Representatives and the Senate passed the legislation this week after Mr. Biden and House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy reached an agreement following tense negotiations.

The Treasury Department had warned it would be unable to pay all its bills on Monday if Congress had failed to act by then.

Mr. Biden signed the bill at the White House a day after hailing it as a bipartisan triumph in his first-ever Oval Office address to the nation as president.

The bill signing, which was closed to the press, marked a low-key, symbolic end to a crisis that vexed Washington for months, forced Mr. Biden to cut short an international trip in Asia and threatened to push the United States to the brink of an unprecedented economic crisis.

“Thank you to Speaker McCarthy, Leader Jeffries, Leader Schumer, and Leader McConnell for their partnership,” the White House said in a statement announcing the bill’s signing, naming the Democratic and Republican leaders of the House and Senate.

Officials later released a ten-second clip of Mr. Biden silently signing the document at the White House.

“It was critical to reach an agreement, and it’s very good news for the American people,” Mr. Biden said on Friday. “No one got everything they wanted. But the American people got what they needed.”

The Republican-controlled House voted 314 to 117 to approve the bill, and the Democrat-controlled Senate voted 63 to 36.

Fitch Ratings said on Friday the United States’ “AAA” credit rating would remain on negative watch, despite the agreement that will allow the government to meet its obligations. — Reuters

HK tightens security on Tiananmen anniversary

HONG KONG/TAIPEI — Hong Kong (HK) police said on Sunday they had detained eight people near a park, four of them for “seditious intention and disorderly conduct,” as authorities tightened security on the 34th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Restrictions in Hong Kong have stifled what were once the biggest vigils marking the bloody crackdown by Chinese troops on pro-democracy demonstrators, leaving cities like London, New York, Berlin and Taipei to keep alive the memory on the June 4 anniversary.

Commemorations are expected on Sunday in at least 30 places in North America, Europe and Asia.

The eight people were detained near Victoria Park, where for years after 1989 democracy activists gathered on the Tiananmen Square anniversary.

Among them was artist Sanmu Chan who chanted “Do not forget June 4. Hongkongers don’t be scared,” as police led him away on Saturday evening, according to a video clip seen by Reuters.

The police said the eight had been detained after “displaying protest items loaded with seditious wordings, chanting and committing unlawful acts”.

Hong Kong activists say such police action is part of a broad campaign by China to end dissent in the city that was promised special freedoms for 50 years under a “one country, two systems” formula when former colonial power Britain handed it back in 1997.

Security is significantly tighter across Hong Kong this year, with up to 6,000 police officers deployed, including riot and anti-terrorism officers, the public broadcaster said.

Senior officials have warned people to abide by the law.

“Police are highly concerned about some people attempting to incite and provoke others to commit illegal acts that endanger national security, public order and public safety,” police said in a statement.

‘CLEAR CONCLUSION’
Despite the warnings, some individuals including some book shop owners, have been quietly marking June 4.

Jailed Hong Kong activist Chow Hang-tung, one of the leaders of a group called The Alliance, which used to organize Hong Kong’s annual June 4 vigils before it was disbanded in 2021, said on Facebook she would hold a 34-hour hunger strike in prison.

In mainland China, any mention of the Tiananmen Square crackdown — where troops opened fire on pro-democracy protesters, killing hundreds if not thousands, according to rights groups — is taboo and the subject is heavily censored.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, asked about the government’s response to events around the world to mark the anniversary, told a regular briefing in Beijing on Friday that the government had already “come to a clear conclusion about the political turmoil in the late 1980s”.

In democratically governed Taiwan, the only part of the Chinese-speaking world when the anniversary can be marked freely and openly, activists will hold a memorial at Taipei’s Liberty Square, alongside other activities including a play on Tiananmen by a Hong Kong playwright.

Vice President William Lai, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s presidential candidate in an election next January, wrote on his Facebook page that what happened in Beijing in 1989 must be discussed and remembered.

“The event commemorating June 4 has continued to be held in Taipei, which shows that democracy and authoritarianism are the biggest differences between Taiwan and China,” he said. — Reuters

Purification rite in St. Peter’s after man desecrates altar

AERIAL VIEW of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City — ALAN LIU-UNSPLASH

VATICAN CITY — A special purification rite was held at the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday after it was desecrated by a man who stood on it naked to protest against the war in Ukraine.

The prayer service, known as a penitential rite and required by Canon law, was led by the basilica’s archpriest, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti.

The Polish man stripped off his clothes and stood on the altar as the basilica was closing on Thursday. He had an inscription painted on his back reading: “Save children of Ukraine”.

Vatican guards handed him over to Italian police, who detained him and ordered him expelled from Italy.

At the prayer service, in which the altar used by Pope Francis was blessed with holy water, Cardinal Gambetti said the man had committed a sinful and “inappropriate, truly regrettable gesture” to bring attention to the victims of war.

A Vatican source said at the time of the incident that the man also had self-inflicted cuts on his body from his fingernails. He was not identified, but from pictures taken by tourists and posted on social media, he appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s. — Reuters
