Historic Duo

The Nuggets knew they had to win heading into yesterday’s match. It would have been understating the obvious to argue that Game Three of the National Basketball Association Finals was pivotal to their cause; they lost at home for the first time in the 2023 Playoffs, and they could not afford to give the Heat, already with an abundance of confidence bordering on the irrational, even more fuel for self-assurance with yet another setback. They were the overwhelming favorites at the start of the best-of-seven affair for a reason, and they needed to once more show all and sundry why.

The good news is that the Nuggets did exactly that in front of 20,019 hostile fans at the Kaseya Center. It didn’t matter that they were burning rubber in one of the rowdiest confines in the league, or that the Heat resolved to greet the opening tip with purpose. They, too, exhibited the focus that was sorely lacking in Game Two; from the get-go, they gave the opposition respect, and played every moment in the set-to the right way: as if it were the last, with the outcome on the line.

If the Nuggets came away with victory at the final buzzer, it was precisely because they didn’t let up. They capitalized on their strengths throughout, enabling them to withstand the best the Heat could throw at them in the first half, and then pulling away in the second once they established their superiority. And, needless to say, foundational pieces Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray led the way. In fact, so definitive were the performances that the Dynamic Duo became the first to post 30-point triple-doubles in the history of the NBA.

The Nuggets know the work is far from done, to be sure. There is no quit with the competition, and they would do well to prep themselves for an even more sustained effort from the Heat tomorrow. Yesterday, they wound up with more of the so-called 50-50 balls, highlighting their capacity to match the physicality and relentlessness of the black and red. Tomorrow, they need to do the same. And should they again prove true to prognoses, they’ll be just a step away from meeting their date with destiny.

Taiwan activates air defence as China aircraft enter zone

TAIPEI — Taiwan activated its defense systems on Thursday after reporting 37 Chinese military aircraft flying into the island’s air defense zone, some of which then flew into the western Pacific, in Beijing’s latest mass air incursion.

China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, has over the past three years regularly flown its air force into the skies near the island, though not into Taiwan’s territorial air space.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said that from 5 a.m. (2100 GMT on Wednesday) it had detected 37 Chinese air force planes, including J-11 and J-16 fighters as well as nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, flying into the southwestern corner of its air defence identification zone, or ADIZ.

The ADIZ is a broader area Taiwan monitors and patrols to give its forces more time to respond to threats.

Some of the Chinese aircraft flew to Taiwan’s southeast and crossed into the western Pacific to perform “air surveillance and long distance navigation training”, the ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan sent its aircraft and ships to keep watch and activated land-based missile systems, it added, using its standard wording for how it responds to such Chinese activity.

China’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

China completed a second phase of joint air patrols with Russia over the Western Pacific on Wednesday, following flights on the previous day over the Sea of Japan and East China Sea, prompting concern in Japan over its national security.

Laura Rosenberger, chair of the American Institute in Taiwan, which manages the unofficial relationship between Washington and Taipei, is visiting Taiwan this week.

On Monday, she told Taiwan media that the United States had an enduring interest in preserving stability in the Taiwan Strait and the United States would continue to arm the island, a source of constant friction in Sino-U.S. ties.

In April, China held war games around Taiwan following a trip to the United States by Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen.

Taiwan’s government rejects China’s sovereignty claims and says only the island’s people can decide their future. — Reuters

East Coast blanketed in veil of smoke from Canadian fires; millions told to stay indoors

NEW YORK — Schools across the US East Coast canceled outdoor activities, airline traffic slowed, and millions of Americans were urged to stay indoors on Wednesday as smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted south, blanketing cities in thick, yellow haze.

The US National Weather Service issued air quality alerts for virtually the entire Atlantic seaboard. Health officials from Vermont to South Carolina and as far west as Ohio and Kansas warned residents that spending time outdoors could cause respiratory problems due to high levels of fine particulates in the atmosphere.

“It’s critical that Americans experiencing dangerous air pollution, especially those with health conditions, listen to local authorities to protect themselves and their families,” President Joseph R. Biden said on Twitter.

US private forecasting service AccuWeather said thick haze and soot extending from high elevations to ground level marked the worst outbreak of wildfire smoke to blanket the Northeastern US in more than 20 years.

New York’s famous skyline, usually visible for miles, appeared to vanish in an otherworldly veil of smoke, which some residents said made them feel unwell.

“It makes breathing difficult,” Mohammed Abass said as he walked down Broadway in Manhattan. “I’ve been scheduled for a road test for driving, for my driving license today, and it was canceled.”

The smoky air was especially tough on people toiling outdoors, such as Chris Ricciardi, owner of Neighbor’s Envy Landscaping in Roxbury, New Jersey. He said he and his crew were curtailing work hours and wearing masks they used for heavy pollen.

“We don’t have the luxury to stop working,” he said. “We want to keep our exposure to the smoke to a minimum, but what can you really do about it?”

Angel Emmanuel Ramirez, 29, a fashion stylist at a Givenchy outlet in Manhattan, said he and fellow workers began feeling ill and closed shop early when they realized the smell of smoke was permeating the store.

“It’s so intense, you would think the wildfire was happening right across the river, not up in Canada,” Ramirez said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the situation an “emergency crisis,” saying the air pollution index for parts of her state was eight times above normal.

Reduced visibility from the haze forced the Federal Aviation Administration to slow air traffic into the New York City area and Philadelphia from elsewhere on the East Coast and upper Midwest, with flight delays averaging about a half hour.

Schools up and down the East Coast called off outdoor activities, including sports, field trips and recesses.

A Broadway matinee of Prima Facie was halted after 10 minutes when actress Jodie Comer had difficulty breathing due to poor air quality. The show was restarted with understudy Dani Arlington going on for Ms. Comer in the role of Tessa, a production spokesperson said in a statement.

Even Major League Baseball was impacted, as the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies both postponed home games scheduled for Wednesday. A National Women’s Soccer League match in Harrison, New Jersey, was also rescheduled, as was a WNBA women’s basketball game in Brooklyn.

In some areas, the air quality index (AQI), which measures major pollutants including particulate matter produced by fires, was well above 400, according to Airnow, which sets 100 as “unhealthy” and 300 as “hazardous.”

At noon (4 p.m. GMT), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, was recording the nation’s worst air quality index, with an AQI reading of 410. Among major cities, New York had the highest AQI in the world on Wednesday afternoon at 342, about double the index for chronically polluted cities such as Dubai (168) and Delhi (164), according to IQAir.

HAZY SKIES
The smoke billowed over the US border from Canada, where hundreds of forest fires have scorched 9.4 million acres (3.8 million hectares) and forced 120,000 people from their homes in an unusually early and intense start to the wildfire season.

The skies above New York and many other North American cities grew progressively hazier through Wednesday, with an eerie yellowish tinge filtering through the smoky canopy. The air smelled like burning wood.

Wildfire smoke has been linked with higher rates of heart attacks and strokes, increases in emergency room visits for asthma and other respiratory conditions, eye irritation, itchy skin and rashes, among other problems.

A Home Depot store in Manhattan sold out of air purifiers and masks. New York Road Runners canceled events intended to mark Global Running Day.

“This is not the day to train for a marathon or to do an outside event with your children,” New York Mayor Eric Adams advised. “If you are older or have heart or breathing problems or an older adult, you should remain inside.”

Pedestrians donned face masks in numbers that brought to mind the worst days of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tyrone Sylvester, 66, playing chess in Manhattan’s Union Square as he has on most days for 30 years, but wearing a mask, said he had never seen the city’s air quality so bad.

“When the sun looks like that,” he said, pointing out the bronze-like orb visible through the smoky sky, “we know something’s wrong. This is what global warming looks like.”

Poor air quality is likely to persist into the weekend, with a developing storm system expected to shift the smoke westward across the Great Lakes and deeper south through the Ohio Valley and into the mid-Atlantic region, AccuWeather said. — Reuters

Indonesian village aid funds weapons for Papua’s rebellion

JAKARTA — Separatists in the Indonesian region of Papua where a New Zealand pilot was taken hostage in February have been siphoning off government aid money to buy black market guns for a deadly guerrilla war, officials say.

The “Dana Desa” village fund introduced by President Joko Widodo in 2015 and valued at $4.7 billion this year has long been criticized as prone to corruption. Nowhere is the oversight of the scheme more challenging than in Papua’s remote highlands.

More than 3,000km (1,800 miles) from Jakarta, Papuan rebels have been fighting for independence since the region rich in copper, gold, nickel and natural gas was absorbed by Indonesia after a 1969 vote.

The escalating insurgency is coinciding with a spike in illegal weapons sales in the region, according to lawyers and court documents, with the village fund providing a key source of revenue.

In 2015, there was just one case of illegal weapons and ammunition trade in Papua, court documents and reports show. By 2021, the number jumped to 14.

In Nduga, where Susi Air pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been held hostage for more than three months, so concerned are police the village fund is being used to buy guns they have asked the central government to withhold the $14 million allocated to the district this year.

“If we don’t block this, then the village fund will flow to the village, and they (rebels) might keep asking for support… Maybe to buy weapons, to buy food,” Papua police spokesman Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo told Reuters.

Otomi Djiwangge, a spokesman for the Nduga district government, said Dana Desa was “not supported by the right monitoring” and the local government had no authority to supervise it.

“So it’s reasonable if the use of the village fund is somewhat loose and anyone can do what they want with it.”

He did not comment on the claim the fund is utilized by rebels, as it was just a presumption, he said.

ILLEGAL ARMS
It is unclear how much of the $337 million in village funds allocated for the Papua region in 2023 is being diverted into arms.

But Faizal Ramadhani, head of the Cartenz Peace Operations taskforce which oversees security in Papua, told Reuters about 40% of illegal arms cases he investigated involved funds from the Dana Desa program. He declined to provide further details.

Spokesmen for the national police and military declined to comment for this story.

The Finance Ministry, which oversees distribution of Dana Desa, said monitoring mechanisms were in place to ensure the funds were used as intended, but declined to comment on the claim that Papuan rebels have been misappropriating money.

In 2021, NGO Indonesia Corruption Watch identified 154 cases of alleged corruption related to the fund, the highest of any government sector spending.

Sebby Sambom, spokesman for the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB), the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement, denied rebels used village funds but did say the group was in part inadvertently funded by the state.

“We have a rich land, so we do it in our way. We can make money through gold mining and timber and also many government payments,” he told Reuters. “We have a right to use that money.”

Designed to spur economic growth, Dana Desa has tripled in size since 2015, but in Papua, some say there is little to show for it.

“I have never seen a project funded by the village fund, not at all,” said Bernadus Kobogau, a tourism official in Intan Jaya. Instead, he said, deadly skirmishes once confined to the jungle now occur in the middle of town.

‘REVOLUTIONARY TAX’
The increased firepower of Papua’s rebels was evident in recent photos released along with a threat to shoot Mr. Mehrtens if independence talks don’t start within two months.

The rebels in Nduga brandished a grenade launcher, several machine guns and 18 assault rifles, including those produced by state weapons munitions maker Pindad, according to Deka Anwar, from the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC).

“Gone are the days that Papuan rebels would save precious bullets,” said Anwar. “Now they can shoot for days.”

In Papua’s highlands, village funds are treated like a “revolutionary tax,” he said, commandeered either via intimidation and coercion, or given willingly by supporters of independence.

Deposited directly into village bank accounts, the funds are regularly handed out in cash by village heads in the Papuan highlands.

“They have a lot of money in Papua, so it is easy to buy the weapons,” said Latifah Anum Siregar, director of the Democracy Alliance for Papua (AIDP) and a lawyer who covers illegal weapons sales cases.

Compounding the problem, rebels are mostly buying weapons from corrupt military and police officers, she said.

One officer travelled to the Papuan town of Nabire nine times to illegally sell weapons, according to court documents.

“In Indonesia we call it ‘senjata makan tuan,’” said Siregar of a dynamic replete with irony: rebels weaponizing state funds to fight against the state. “It means it backfires.” — Reuters

Scientists find crocodile ‘virgin birth’ at Costa Rica zoo

MEXICO CITY — Scientists have documented the first-known instance of a “virgin birth” by a crocodile, which had been living in isolation for 16 years at Costa Rican zoo, according to a study published on Wednesday.

The female American crocodile laid 14 eggs in 2018 within her enclosure, a not uncommon phenomenon among captive reptiles. The more puzzling fact, however, came after three months of incubation when one egg was found to contain a fully formed stillborn baby crocodile.

According to the study published in the journal Biology Letters, scientists tested the crocodile fetus’ genetic makeup. They found DNA sequences showing it was a result of facultative parthenogenesis (FP), or reproduction without the genetic contribution of males.

The phenomenon of FP, which some scientists have referred to by the shorthand of “virgin birth,” has also been documented in other species of fish, birds, lizards and snakes. The scientists said this is the first-known example in a crocodile.

In FP, a female’s egg cell can develop into a baby without being fertilized by a male’s sperm cell.

In making an egg cell, a precursor cell divides into four cells: one becomes the egg cell and retains key cellular structures and the gel-like cytoplasm, while the others hold extra genetic material.

Then, one of those cells essentially acts as a sperm cell and fuses with the egg to become “fertilized.”

The American crocodile is considered vulnerable and at risk of extinction in the wild. According to one hypothesis, FP may be more common among species on the verge of extinction, the study said.

The scientists said the Costa Rica “virgin birth” could lead to new information about crocodile ancestors that walked the earth in the Triassic Period some 250 million years ago.

“This discovery offers tantalizing insights into the possible reproductive capabilities of the extinct archosaurian relatives of crocodilians and birds, notably members of Pterosauria and Dinosauria,” the study said. — Reuters

Asset manager Just Climate raises $1.5B with help from Microsoft fund

TAWATCHAI07-FREEPIK

Asset manager Just Climate said on Thursday it had raised $1.5 billion for its inaugural fund after strong demand from institutional clients including Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund helped it beat the original target of $1 billion.

Established by Generation Investment Management, Just Climate aims to focus investment on the sectors where cutting greenhouse gas emissions is hardest to do, such as cement, shipping, industrials and land use.

“More than 50% of the world’s emissions come from the hard-to-abate industries. Without radical and urgent changes to the way that the financial sector approaches the decarbonization challenge in these industries… there will be no net zero by 2050,” Just Climate Chief Investment Officer Shaun Kingsbury said in a statement.

The firm’s initial fund, Climate Assets Fund I, will focus on helping companies with proven technology scale their business to a level to attract more risk-averse investors.

“Proven, transformational climate solutions are being developed to decarbonize the industrial sectors. With the right investment support, we believe they can scale rapidly to achieve better gross margins, a lower cost of capital and widespread market adoption,” Kingsbury added.

Among other investors to back the fund include IMAS Foundation, Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, Harvard Management Company, California State Teachers’ Retirement System, and Colonial First State Investments.

Initial investments from the fund include electric vehicle charging company ABB E-mobility, industrial startup H2 Green Steel, and Swedish gasification technology firm Meva Energy.

“We start with climate impact, identify solutions that will make the biggest difference, and then direct and scale institutional capital to those solutions that we believe can generate attractive risk-adjusted returns,” added senior partner Clara Barby. — Reuters

Pag-IBIG releases nearly P16B in cash loans in Jan.-April 2023; over 700K members aided

Pag-IBIG Fund released P15.82 billion in cash loans in the first four months of the year, an increase of 5% from the P15.10 billion released during the same period last year, agency officials announced last June 7.

The amount of Multi-Purpose Loans (MPLs) disbursed by the agency helped 728,653 members with their financial needs.

“We at Pag-IBIG Fund exert all efforts in providing our members with assistance on their financial needs. We are happy to note that through our Pag-IBIG Multi-Purpose Loan, we were able to aid more than 700 thousand Filipino workers gain added funds to tend to their needs. All our efforts are in line with the call of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to provide the best service to the Filipino people,” said Secretary Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar, who leads the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees.

Pag-IBIG Fund’s Multi-Purpose Loan or MPL is the agency’s affordable and easily accessible cash loan. Under the Pag-IBIG MPL, qualified members can borrow up to 80% of their total Pag-IBIG Regular Savings, which consists of their monthly contributions, their employer’s contributions, and accumulated dividends earned. The proceeds can be used to pay for tuition fees, medical expenses, minor home improvement, a family trip, or even serve as capital for small businesses. The loan is payable in 24 or 36 monthly installments, with the first payment deferred for two months. The Pag-IBIG MPL comes at a low interest rate of 10.5% per year. In the past years, the agency has returned more than 90% of its income to its members in the form of dividends.

Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, noted that the agency now provides members with numerous ways to conveniently apply for a Pag-IBIG MPL through its more than 200 branches, its online facility Virtual Pag-IBIG found in its website, and the Virtual Pag-IBIG mobile app.

“Each year, over 2.5 million members rely on the Pag-IBIG MPL for their immediate financial needs. More than being a reliable source for cash, our MPL is now more accessible to members. In addition to applying for a loan by submitting their applications through their employers or at a Pag-IBIG branch, our members may now also apply for a Pag-IBIG MPL wherever they are, online, with the Virtual Pag-IBIG. This makes the Pag-IBIG MPL more reliable and more accessible than ever,” Ms. Acosta said.

In total, the Pag-IBIG Fund released P16.44 billion in short-term loans benefitting 766,258 members in January to April. This includes the amount released under the Pag-IBIG MPL and the P.62 billion in Pag-IBIG Calamity Loans it released to aid 37,605 members.

Japan court rules that not allowing same-sex marriage is ‘in a state of unconstitutionality’

TOKYO – Japan’s Fukuoka District Court ruled on Thursday that not allowing same-sex marriage was “in a state of unconstitutionality” in a complicated ruling that fell short of marriage-equality activists’ expectations.

The ruling came a week after another district court said it was unconstitutional to not allow same-sex marriage, bolstering hopes of the LGBTQ community in Japan, the only Group of Seven nation without legal protection for same-sex unions.

Five rulings on same-sex marriage have now been handed down around Japan – two saying bans on it are unconstitutional and one saying they were not. A Tokyo ruling upheld the ban on same-sex marriage but said a lack of legal protection for same-sex families violated their human rights.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs said details of the ruling were still being verified but that he thought it was likely to be similar to that of the Tokyo court. When it was handed down, activists saw that ruling as a step forward.

Opinion polls show about 70% of the public supports same-sex marriage, but the conservative ruling party of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida opposes it.

Kishida in February sacked an aide after he sparked outrage by saying that people would flee Japan if same-sex marriage was allowed and that he didn’t want to live next to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender couples.

Kishida has remained noncommittal about the issue despite strong pressure from other G7 nations, especially the United States, in the run-up to Japan’s hosting of the G7 leaders’ summit last month.

Key business lobbies have called for change, arguing that without diversity including LGBTQ rights, the world’s third-largest economy will not remain globally competitive.

More than 300 municipalities throughout Japan covering about 65% of the population allow same-sex couples to enter partnership agreements, but their rights are limited. Partners can’t inherit each other’s assets or have parental rights to each other’s children, and hospital visits aren’t guaranteed.

Kishida’s government promised to pass a law promoting “understanding” of LGBT people before the summit, but opposition from conservatives delayed it so much that a watered-down version is likely to come to a vote next week. – Reuters

TikTok seeks up to $20 bln in e-commerce business this year – Bloomberg News

ByteDance-owned TikTok hopes to more than quadruple the size of its worldwide e-commerce operations to as much as $20 billion in merchandise sales this year, relying on growth in Southeast Asia, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The increase compares to last year’s $4.4 billion in gross merchandise value, representing the worth of total goods sold through its online marketplace TikTok Shop, the report said, adding that the company is betting on markets such as Indonesia.

TikTok did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

TikTok’s e-commerce platform lets customers purchase goods through links on the app during live broadcasts.

The development comes as the Chinese-owned company faces scrutiny from governments and regulators because of concerns that China could use the app to harvest user data or advance its interests.

The company is also working to expand its sales in the US and Europe, the report said.

Financial Times had last year reported that TikTok is due to enter a partnership with Los Angeles-based TalkShopLive to launch its live shopping platform in North America by outsourcing its operations. – Reuters

Dole Philippines’ journey: From connectivity challenges to seamless operations

Empowered by satellite internet, Dole’s employees thrive with seamless business operations.

Have you ever wondered how a leading, remote food processing facility tackles obstacles to internet connectivity? As the manager of Technology Infrastructure, Security, and IT Operations at Dole Philippines Inc., I want to share our remarkable journey in overcoming internet connectivity challenges at our remote food processing facility. Our main pineapple plantation is located at the remote base of Mt. Matutum in Polomolok, South Cotabato, and spans a vast area. Far from highly populated cities, there is little terrestrial infrastructure to support traditional internet or mobile connectivity and local telecom providers were unable to offer suitable connectivity solutions for our business. Unreliable internet connectivity greatly affected our mission to deliver top-quality fruit products to global markets. We started looking for an efficient and reliable internet service to address our connectivity gap, and effectively support our growing operations.

In January 2022, our General Manager introduced me to LTSI, an internet provider offering high-speed internet through satellites for remote areas. Intrigued by their offering, I reached out and discovered their SATNET service, powered by Kacific’s broadband satellite internet technology. Recognizing its potential, I requested a demo to conduct a trial of service, which quickly proved the technology to be an effective solution for our connectivity needs, providing fast and reliable internet across the site and offices.

Amidst the picturesque Dole pineapple plantation, SATNET powered by Kacific bridges the connectivity gap.

Local Kacific Distributor (KAD) swiftly deployed, installed, and activated an industrial-grade 1.2m terminal onsite, using the Newtec app to ensure optimal placement for unobstructed satellite connectivity across the whole site. We conducted speed tests that revealed download speeds of 54.93Mbps and upload speeds of 16.71 Mbps, surpassing the promise of 50Mbps and 10Mbps respectively, and exceeding our expectations.

Speed is vital to ensure we can deliver data in real-time to expedite decision-making and keep track of warehouse inventory. It also makes it possible for our team members to perform daily encoding of transactions, read and send emails and participate in online meetings and video calls. While our tests also revealed latency of up to 558 milliseconds, this does not affect our day-to-day activities. Satnet has a useful feature called static IP. It provides secure and reliable Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections, which protect privacy and data. It also helps locate devices accurately and deliver data efficiently using geolocation services. With static IP, enterprises don’t need to worry about requesting IP address renewals as their devices stay connected without interruptions. Moreover, file servers experience fast file transfers, boosting productivity.

Prior to the implementation of SATNET and Kacific-powered internet, our offices remained offline. Due to the lack of reliable connectivity, our employees had to travel all the way to our Polomolok cannery office to do essential day-to-day tasks like data uploading and encoding. Now, with the ability to directly enter data into SAP from the plantation, the process of information transfer is significantly enhanced, leading to streamlined operations and the elimination of travel time and costs.

SATNET, powered by Kacific, has proven to be an invaluable partner in our company’s digitalization journey. Their unwavering commitment to providing friendly and responsive local support has made a significant impact on our operations. Thanks to their assistance, we have been able to embark on projects and initiatives that were previously hindered by connectivity limitations. As a result, our communication, data capture, and analysis capabilities have experienced remarkable improvements. We also appreciate the prompt local support provided by dedicated and professional local distributors. Given our utmost satisfaction with SATNET’s solutions and the positive impact on our business operations, we are now considering expanding this exceptional setup to our other remote sites and look forward to leveraging SATNET’s expertise to further enhance our productivity across multiple locations. — Eugene Alfante
