SM Prime sets Sto. Tomas mall opening, its fourth in Batangas

ARTIST’S perspective of SM City Sto. Tomas.

LISTED property developer SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is set to open SM City Sto. Tomas in Batangas on Oct. 27, marking the company’s fourth mall in the province.

In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, SM Prime said the mall, with a gross floor area of 110,000 square meters, is the company’s 85th in the country.

“Once opened, SM Prime will have 61 malls in the provincial areas of the Philippines and 24 malls in Metro Manila,” the property developer said.

The new mall is located along Maharlika Highway, San Bartolome in Santo Tomas City. It joins other SM malls in the province, namely: SM City Batangas, SM City Lipa, and SM Center Lemery.

According to SM Prime, the new mall is “strategically located” at the intersection of highways crossing the provinces of Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon.

“We are delighted to open SM City Sto. Tomas this Friday to add more fun and excitement to the thriving City of Sto. Tomas in Batangas. We are making sure that this newest shopping, dining and entertainment hub will provide its guests with SM’s well-loved brand of service and convenience that will be beneficial to our fellows in Batangas, most especially this coming Holidays Season,” SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim said.

SM Prime said that the mall will open with almost 100% space lease-awarded sharing three levels of shops and brands led by The SM Store, SM Supermarket, Uniqlo, Ace Hardware, Sports Central, Watsons, Pet Express, SM Appliance Center, Miniso, Surplus, 2Go, Chinabank, and BDO.

The new mall will also feature SM Foodcourt, Cyberzone, SM Cinema with three digital screens, parking zones, and a transport terminal.

Manila Water, Maynilad, MWSS to craft roadmap for watersheds

EN.WIKIPEDIA.ORG

MANILA WATER Co., Inc., Maynilad Water Services, Inc., and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) are preparing a roadmap to develop and manage Angat, Ipo, and La Mesa watersheds by 2047 as sources of clean and safe water.

In a release posted on its website, Manila Water said it had signed a memorandum of agreement with Maynilad and MWSS for the Integrated Watershed Management Roadmap for Angat, Ipo, and La Mesa.

“It goes without saying that this is a very important endeavor that we, as concessionaires (Manila Water and Maynilad), and MWSS are committing to,” Manila Water President and Chief Executive Officer Jose Victor Emmanuel A. de Dios said.

“So, we are very happy that this initiative has come to [fruition]. You can rely on our commitment and our support to make sure that we will work with all the stakeholders to ensure a robust and well-protected vibrant watershed,” he added.

As stipulated in the agreement, both concessionaires will fund and carry out programs that will protect and rehabilitate the water sources and ensure sustainability.

Jennifer C. Rufo, head of Maynilad’s corporate communications, said that concessionaires will split the P987.52 million cost required for various activities from 2023 to 2027.

These activities involve water resources management, watershed management, climate adaptation, and institutional management to secure water supply and quality, she said.

“Specific activities include forest landscape restoration, silt mitigation, establishment of a watershed protection system, and activation of a Special Civilian Armed Auxiliary force in Angat, among others,” she said in a Viber message.

Meanwhile, Manila Water said that it aims to plant and nurture 580,000 trees and reforest 1,000 hectares by 2025 by the second half of 2023 through its intensified water security and climate change mitigation program called Pasibol: Puno ng Pag-asa Program.

The company said that the program is a sustainability effort that focuses on resource efficiency, watershed protection, water quality, and occupational and health safety.

Manila Water serves Metro Manila’s east zone network, which comprises Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Pateros, Mandaluyong, San Juan, portions of Quezon City, and Manila, and several towns of nearby Rizal province.

Maynilad serves Manila, except for portions of San Andres and Sta. Ana. It also operates in Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon. It also supplies the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario, all in Cavite province.

Metro Pacific Investments Corp., which has a majority stake in Maynilad, is one of three Philippine units of Hong Kong-based First Pacific Co. Ltd., the others being Philex Mining Corp. and PLDT Inc.

Term deposit rates mixed

BW FILE PHOTO

YIELDS on the central bank’s term deposit facility were mixed on Wednesday following hawkish signals from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) chief.

Demand for the BSP’s term deposit facility (TDF) reached P303.317 billion on Wednesday, below the P380-billion offer and the P393.161 billion in bids for the same offer volume at last week’s auction.

Broken down, bids for the seven-day papers amounted to P187.412 billion, lower than the P220 billion auctioned off by the BSP as well as the P236.753 billion in tenders seen in the previous auction.

Banks asked for yields ranging from 6.4099% to 6.459%, a slightly lower band compared with the 6.41% to 6.455% seen a week ago. The average rate of the one-week term deposits inched down by 0.42 basis point (bp) to 6.4315% from 6.4357% previously.

Meanwhile, the 14-day term deposits attracted tenders amounting to P115.905 billion, lower than the P160-billion offer and P156.408 billion in bids recorded on Oct. 18.

Accepted rates for the tenor ranged from 6.418% to 6.48%, a slimmer margin versus the 6.4% to 6.48% seen last week. This caused the average rate of the two-week papers to inch up by 0.07 bp to 6.449% from 6.4483% in the prior auction.

The BSP has not auctioned off 28-day term deposits for three years to give way to its weekly offering of securities with the same tenor.

The term deposits and the 28-day bills are used by the BSP to mop up excess liquidity in the financial system and to better guide market rates.

TDF yields were mixed on Wednesday as the central bank chief said the Monetary Board may deliver an off-cycle rate hike as early as Thursday amid upside risks to inflation, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in a Viber message.

BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona, Jr. on Tuesday said the Monetary Board is considering hiking benchmark rates this week or next — before its scheduled policy meeting on Nov. 16 — to help anchor inflation expectations.

The BSP has been in a “hawkish pause” at its last four meetings, keeping its policy rate at a near 16-year high of 6.25% after it raised borrowing costs by 425 bps from May 2022 to March 2023 to help tame inflation.

Mr. Remolona earlier said they could hike benchmark rates by 25 bps at their November meeting if price pressures persist.

Headline inflation accelerated to 6.1% in September from 5.3% in August. This brought the nine-month average to 6.6%, well above the BSP’s 2-4% target and 5.8% full-year forecast.

National Economic and Development Authority Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan on Wednesday said inflation remains driven by supply-side factors and does not warrant further monetary tightening.

“I am not a member of the Monetary Board, and I respect their wisdom, but I think the source of inflation is more supply-side and not the demand-side, which requires monetary policy cure,” Mr. Balisacan said. — Keisha B. Ta-asan

Robinsons Land to boost sustainability spending

ROBINSONS LAND Corp. (RLC) will continue to ramp up its capital expenditures (capex) on sustainability, its finance chief said.

“Definitely [we will increase our capex] on an annual basis. In terms of sustainability, we’ve grown two fold. We started sustainability [efforts] in 2015. We started investing in solar panels,” RLC Chief Financial, Risk and Compliance Officer Kerwin Max S. Tan said in a forum in Makati City on Wednesday.

Mr. Tan emphasized the need to take into account the impact of climate change.

“More than compliance to Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requirements or government regulations on sustainability, each one of us has to look at our environment as a whole,” he said.

“As the CFO of the company, I  have to look at protecting the company assets and if you look at what’s happening quite recently, storms are getting stronger. You have to look at what we can do to minimize the impact of climate change and we have to look at sustainability efforts to sustain the longevity of our properties,” he added.

Apart from protecting assets from climate risks, Mr. Tan also said that there is a need to protect people.

“We have employees all across the nation. Our stakeholders [and] suppliers [say] they are not able to perform their duties because of calamities. We have to protect our assets, physical, people, suppliers and everyone,” he added.

RLC said it ensures that its buildings are LEED-certified, referring to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

In its 2022 sustainability report, the firm said it conducted several energy-saving projects to “efficiently manage the consumption of our energy resources.”

RLC malls also have rainwater collection systems that make rainwater usable, and treatment and recycling facilities for repurposing wastewater.

Mr. Tan said that the government could also provide more incentives for shifting to sustainable options.

“For example, if we purchase renewable products or equipment, maybe we could be value-added tax (VAT) exempt from these purchases,” he said.

On Wednesday, shares in RLC fell by 0.82% or 12 centavos to P14.50 apiece. — Luisa Maria Jacinta C. Jocson

Richard Roundtree, Black action hero who played Shaft, 81

RICHARD Roundtree, a trailblazing Black actor who played the private eye John Shaft in the Shaft films of the 1970s and also took on dramatic roles dealing with race relations in America, died on Tuesday aged 81, the Hollywood Reporter said, citing his manager.

Mr. Roundtree died at his home in Los Angeles of pancreatic cancer, the Reporter said, citing his manager, Patrick McMinn. Mr. Roundtree’s representatives did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for confirmation.

“Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film. The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated,” Mr. McMinn said in a statement, according to Variety, another show business trade publication.

Mr. Roundtree shot to fame with the 1971 Blaxploitation movie Shaft about a private detective in the Harlem section of New York, and he reprised the role in a number of sequels and a short-lived network TV series.

The rugged and streetwise character, who wore flashy leather jackets and who was accompanied by a catchy theme song from Isaac Hayes, helped define cool for a Black leading man and also gained acceptance from white audiences.

Mr. Roundtree also had a role in the groundbreaking ABC television slavery drama Roots in 1977 and other prominent projects of the era, playing motorcycle daredevil Miles in 1974’s Earthquake.

Among his more poignant films was 1996’s Once Upon a Time … When We Were Colored, the story a tight-knit Black community confronting the racism of post-war Mississippi.

He also played opposite Peter O’Toole’s Robinson Crusoe in Man Friday in 1975 and alongside Laurence Olivier’s depiction of General Douglas MacArthur in 1981’s Inchon.

Roundtree worked regularly until the end, with 159 acting credits to his name plus three upcoming projects yet to be released, according to IMDB.com.

He was married twice and is survived by four daughters — Nicole, Tayler, Morgan and Kelli Roundtree — and his son, James, Variety said. — Reuters

Light at the ENDS tunnel

CHIARA SUMMER-UNSPLASH

In 2019, prior to the COVID pandemic, I supported an advocacy favoring Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) over regular cigarettes. ENDS include electronic cigarettes and vape, which are electronic atomizers that simulate cigarette smoking. I supported ENDS mainly for its potential as a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), specifically to help people quit smoking.

I read available data, did some research, and came to the early conclusion that ENDS might help cigarette smokers switch to what I believed then to be a better option. Of course, this was not realizing at the time how vape could be even more addicting than cigarettes, and even more attractive to the youth. And that ENDS might be regulated differently than regular cigarettes.

Since then, I have changed my mind about ENDS with respect to it getting regulatory advantages over tobacco given its use as NRT. Considering what it is, a cigarette alternative, I have since been advocating that ENDS and regular cigarettes should be treated the same in terms of taxation, regulation by the Food and Drug Administration, sales and marketing restriction, and distribution. In short, both should be made expensive and difficult to access particularly by the young.

But a study that recently came to my attention seems to be a sort of light at the end of the ENDS tunnel. It is the first study I have read that tracked over a period of three years a sample of cigarette smokers who switched to ENDS, and the impact of that “switch” on their health. To ENDS’ credit, according to the abstract of the study results, it appears to have positive attributes.

I managed to secure only an abstract, as there are still restrictions on the distribution of the study. The abstract was available online on Nicotine & Tobacco Research (N&TR), a journal that is sponsored by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. The study I am referring to was released to the journal only this month as an “accepted manuscript,” and was authored by Saul Shiffman, PhD, Douglas R. Oliveri, PhD, Nicholas I. Goldenson, PhD, Qiwei Liang, PhD, Ryan A. Black, PhD, and Snigdha Mishra, PhD.

The study “assessed adults who had smoked 10 cigarettes/day for 10 years, comparing 124 continuing cigarette smokers (Smokers) to 140 former smokers who switched to JUUL-brand ENDS exclusively for 6 months (Switchers). Assessments included biomarkers of exposure (BOEs) to select harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs), biomarkers of potential harm (BOPHs) related to smoking-related diseases, psychometric assessments of dependence on cigarettes and ENDS, respectively, and respiratory symptoms.”

According to the abstract of study results published in N&TR, “nicotine levels were significantly higher in Switchers (median time switched = three years), who were unusually heavy users of JUUL. All other BOEs… were significantly lower in Switchers than Smokers. Most BOPHs (sICAM-1 [primary], and e.g., white blood cell count, MCP1, HbA1c) were significantly lower in Switchers than Smokers; HDL was significantly higher. Switchers reported significantly lower dependence on JUUL than Smokers did on cigarettes, and respiratory symptom scores were significantly lower among Switchers than Smokers.”

With these results, the abstract concluded that “compared to continuing smokers, smokers who switched to JUUL had substantially lower exposures to multiple HPHCs, favorable differences in markers of inflammation, endothelial function, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular risk, and less respiratory symptoms.” Simply put, the abstract noted, “these findings suggest that switching from cigarettes to JUUL likely reduces smokers’ health risks.”

And this I believe to be some form of light at the end of the tunnel for ENDS. It appears there is still hope even for long-time cigarette smokers shifting or intending to shift to ENDS exclusively, assuming any health “damage” done by their years of cigarette smoking are still reversible. In this line, I can support ENDS but only as an alternative for long-time smokers, and not something that should even be started by nonsmokers.

The abstract added, “short-term confinement studies and randomized clinical trials demonstrate that adult smokers who switch completely to ENDS experience substantial reductions in exposure to many smoking-related toxicants. This study extends those findings to longer periods of switching to JUUL-brand ENDS (almost three years on average) under naturalistic use conditions in real-world settings, and found that switching to JUUL resulted in favorable differences in BOPHs more proximally related to smoking-induced disease, as well as in respiratory symptoms. Smokers who switch to ENDS reduce their exposure to toxicants, likely reducing their disease risk.”

Moving forward, I foresee things getting trickier for governments. After all, with ENDS perhaps showing some positive attributes, some quarters might spin the narrative that ENDS are better and “healthier” than cigarettes and should thus be restricted less. After all, if the aim is to make cigarette smokers shift to ENDS, then ENDS should be more accessible to them.

The problem with this argument is that less stringent regulation can also make ENDS more accessible to nonsmokers, particularly the young who never smoked cigarettes but are now influenced by peers or social media to take up vaping or the use of electronic cigarettes. It is not as if ENDS are prescription medicine that can be prescribed only for smokers who wish to quit.

I still believe in parity. Regular cigarettes and ENDS should be treated the same, taxed in the same way, and regulated and restricted in the same way. More important, the government should strictly enforce regulations at points of sale, particularly their distance to schools, and regulate if not ban the use of “flavors” that make cigarettes and ENDS products appeal to the young.

OPPO to launch new flagship foldable phone in the country

OPPO FIND N3 FLIP

OPPO is set to launch in the Philippines its new flagship foldable smartphone on Thursday, the Find N3 Flip.

The OPPO Find N3 Flip aims to elevate the standard in flip phone technology, the company said in a statement this week.

The highlight of the newest OPPO foldable phone is the cover screen display, which introduces a host of more functional enhancements. The OPPO Find N3 Flip’s cover screen will allow users to access and use multiple apps, without having to unfold their smartphone,” OPPO said.

“The improved cover screen can accommodate more popular apps, including third-party apps like Gmail, Spotify, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Google Maps. So, whether you need to scroll through your social media timelines, check a map, switch tracks, or write a quick e-mail, it’s all just a tap away on the cover screen,” it added.

The cover screen also allows up to six simultaneous notifications, OPPO said.

“The OPPO Find N3 Flip takes personalization to the next level with over 20 screen styles you can customize, direct cover widgets to add for applications such as Messages, Camera, Battery, Recorder, Timer, and To-dos,” it said.

“It also enhances the user experience by introducing a fresh animated weather wallpaper and a corresponding Always-On Display that provides real-time information. It improves accessibility by enabling users to pin three widgets or apps directly onto the cover screen wallpaper, offering swift, and convenient access with just a tap,” OPPO added.

The Find N3 Flip is powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 9200 chipset and a 4,300 mAh battery that supports 44W fast charging.

It has a glass and metal body with a curved form. It will be available in two colors: Cream Gold and Sleek Black.

OPPO said the Find N3 Flip is the first flip smartphone to feature a triple camera system, which consists of a 50-megapixel (MP) main camera, 48-MP ultra-wide camera, and 32-MP telephoto portrait camera setup powered by Hasselblad.

When operating the camera with the phone closed, the cover screen can be used as a rear camera viewfinder, OPPO said.

When the smartphone is opened, the top half of the screen can be used to preview the image, while the bottom half can display the camera controls setup, it added. — M.H.L. Antivola

Cebu Pacific studies other fuel options

CEBUPACIFICAIR.COM

CEBU PACIFIC is studying the use of other emerging technologies to replace conventional jet fuel, its top official said.

“There are, I guess, other technologies that are being explored, whether it’s SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), hydrogen or electric,” Alexander G. Lao, president and chief commercial officer of Cebu Pacific, told reporters on the sidelines of a press briefing on Tuesday.

Cebu Pacific is further studying how to utilize these emerging technologies for its flights, Mr. Lao said.

Liquid hydrogen is considered a potential low-carbon fuel for aviation and is said to take long-range flights.

“SAF is the linchpin of it all. That is the most developed anyway,” he said.

The International Air Transport Association has estimated that SAF will contribute 65% of carbon emissions reduction.

Mr. Lao said the company is also looking at hydrogen fuel but admitted that Cebu Pacific is still quite far away from using this technology.

For now, the budget carrier is still tied up with the use of SAF as an alternative to traditional jet fuel although the company is also studying how to best produce the green fuel as supply is still limited.

“There are studies on how to best produce it, so those studies are ongoing,” he added.

On Wednesday, the company launched its second commercial flight powered by SAF although SAF blend has already been integrated into some of its delivery flights, Mr. Lao said.

The company targets to integrate SAF blend across its network by 2030 as part of its goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. — Ashley Erika O. Jose

The Hunger Games to be turned into London stage play

LONDON — The Hunger Games is set to open at a London theater next year in the first live stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ novels and the hugely successful film franchise.

Irish playwright, screenwriter, and director Conor McPherson has adapted for theater the first book in Collins’s young adult dystopian trilogy and the first film from The Hunger Games Lionsgate movie franchise, which starred Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen.

Matthew Dunster, playwright, director, and former associate director at Shakespeare’s Globe theater, will direct.

“To receive Suzanne Collins’ blessing to adapt The Hunger Games for the stage is both humbling and inspiring. She has created a classic story which continues to resonate now more than ever,” Mr. McPherson said in a statement on Tuesday.

“In a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs, The Hunger Games beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially.

“This is turbocharged storytelling of the highest order and I’m hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatre goers and to Suzanne Collins’ longstanding and devoted fans.”

Ms. Collins said she was “very excited” to be collaborating with Mr. McPherson and Mr. Dunster “as they bring their dynamic and innovative interpretation of The Hunger Games to the London stage.”

The Lionsgate Hunger Games movies, which brought to the big screen Collins’ tale of the oppressed residents of Panem, forced to compete in an annual televised gladiatorial contest to the death while the wealthy watched on, grossed more than $2 billion at the global box office.

Prequel The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, set 64 years before the first installment of Collins’ trilogy and starring Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, and Viola Davis, is scheduled for release globally in mid-November. — Reuters

Coal and nuclear power as growth drivers

(Part 3 of a series)

We go straight to the numbers. I construct this table showing the changes in consumption per capita of coal and nuclear power of various countries over two decades, and 2002 and 2022. Data sources are: 1.) Annual data in terawatt-hours (TWH) coal and nuclear consumption from Energy Institute, Statistical Review of World Energy (EI-SRWE) 2023, and, 2.) Population and annual GDP growth from IMF World Economic Outlook (IMF-WEO) 2023. Then I computed the per capita consumption and average GDP growth.

The numbers and trend show that, 1.) decarbonizing, de-coal, de-nuclear power countries have experienced a significant slowdown in GDP growth bordering on degrowth, 2.) carbonizing, high coal and high nuke power consuming countries experienced flat or increased economic growth, and, 3.) India and the Philippines (and other developing countries) still have very low coal use per capita, about 1/20 or less compared to many countries in the table, and yet are being endlessly bullied to cut their coal consumption.

So there. The numbers are actual, straightforward, and clear, not hypothetical or garbled. Of course, there are many other factors why countries have fast or slow growth but since almost everything in modern and developing economies require energy, the high coal and nuclear (and gas) consumption by countries enabled them to grow fast, industrialize, and improve the standard of living of their people. When they reverse track, de-coal and even de-nuke, they grow slowly, bordering on stopping growth which will come soon.

When I was in Nice, France last week for the Tholos Forum 2023, a three-day conference on free markets, consumer freedom, and energy realism, the bright lights of the boulevard in Cote d’Azur alone were a tourist attraction. Strangers and visitors can walk safely under the bright and beautiful lights. France is a powerhouse in nuclear energy generation.

The Philippine government, business and civil society leaders should bear this in mind. Our main priority should be fast growth, creating more jobs and businesses for our people. Not the globalist agenda of ecological central planning and energy rationing.

Meanwhile, many energy issues were recently reported in BusinessWorld.

1. On decarbonization: “ADB pitches farm decarbonization as food security issue” (Oct. 2), “Industry ponders the ‘long road’ before hydrogen becomes viable” (Oct. 15), “‘Smart and green’ infra being readied to serve offshore wind industry” (Oct. 16), “Adjustments to next PHL Energy Plan expected to reflect rapid developments in renewables” (Oct. 19), “World Bank estimates Philippine decarbonization bill at $62 billion” (Oct. 22), and, “China wind power firms may invest $4 billion, BoI says” (Oct. 24).

2. On the rollout of electric vehicles (EV): “EV industry anticipating upside surprise in vehicle penetration over next 5-10 years” (Oct. 18), “Extension of import duty concessions seen as crucial for growing EV adoption” (Oct. 19), and, “DoE sees extent of EV rollout depending on policy coordination with other agencies” (Oct. 22).

3. On the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP): “NGCP wins approval for 4 ancillary services contracts” (Oct. 9), “NGCP seeks gov’t support to meet tight deadline for connecting Batangas, Mindoro” (Oct. 11), “Mindanao-Visayas grid link expected to be complete by end of 2023 — NGCP” (Oct. 12), “NGCP asked to submit ECCs, contracts ahead of review” (Oct. 16), and, “ERC rejects NGCP petition to amend rules on transmission wheeling rates” (Oct. 17).

4. On nuclear power development: “APEC councils to conduct roundtable on nuclear power viability” (Oct. 23), and, “Energy dep’t says push to satisfy IAEA nuclear power requirements underway” (Oct. 24).

ABAC FORUM ON NUCLEAR ENERGY
Last Tuesday, Oct. 24, I attended the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) virtual forum, “Fueled by Change: Understanding Nuclear Energy Transition.” The opening messages were given by Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla, Jan de Silva of the Toronto Region Board of Trade, and Sabin Aboitiz, the President and CEO of Aboitiz Group and also the Lead Strategic Convener of the Private Sector Advisory Council to the Philippine government, Co-Chairman of the ABAC Sustainable Growth Working Group, and Steward of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism.

The program was hosted by smooth-speaking engineer and fellow UP alumnus Suiee Suarez who is the Vice-President for Corporate Affairs of Aboitiz Power. After the three main speakers have spoken, Mr. Suarez turned over the moderation of two panels to Ruth Yu-Owen, President of Upgrade Energy Philippines. There were four speakers (from Canada, the Philippines, Japan, China) each in Session 1, “Collaboration and financing for nuclear energy transition,” and Session 2, “Nuclear energy integration and innovation.” These were financial and technical or engineering discussions.

A summary of the forum was reported by Sheldeen Joy Talavera in her report in BusinessWorld, “Energy dep’t says push to satisfy IAEA nuclear power requirements underway.”

The projected high EV rollout will soon require a huge supply of electricity. From the current average of six terawatt-hours (TWH) annual increase in power generation, we should increase this to nine to 10 TWH annually. This cannot be provided by intermittent wind, solar, and biomass, and even by geothermal or small hydro. It can only be safely and reliably delivered by huge thermal plants (oil, gas, coal) and nuclear power.

SILVER LINING THE MUSICAL
I watched Silver Lining the Musical last Sunday at RCBC Plaza’s Carlos P. Romulo auditorium in Makati. Wonderful acting, dancing, and singing by a big group of talented actors and singers. The auditorium itself is testament to the need for a huge, ample supply of electricity — plenty of lights, a cold big room, good sounds and audio.

The composer and lyricist of Silver Lining, Jack Teotico, a fellow UP School of Economics alumnus, says the musical is the story of the baby boomer generation. It is about brotherhood and fraternities, class parties and ligawan/courtship, triumph in university basketball competitions, falling in love for the first time, old flames and crushes, quo vadis about the world, and so on.

The last shows will be from Friday to Sunday, Oct. 27-29. Then the venue will no longer be available. It is a bright work of art that deserves a re-run in other theaters or auditoriums next year and succeeding years. Good job, Jack, Rockitwell band and studios, the players and singers.
