Top Shopee affiliates to aspirants: Build a brand people can trust

BW FILE PHOTO

Marketing affiliates on e-commerce platforms seeking success should focus on building a trusted brand through consistent effort, according to Shopee’s top affiliates on Wednesday.

“Just like any other job, you really have to put your heart into it and put time and effort into it because it’s not something you can do quickly,” Hannah Jamon, Shopee’s top key opinion leader (KOL) for beauty and electronics in 2025, told reporters during the media roundtable at the Shopee Brand Summit 2026.

Meanwhile, Ned Adriano, one of Shopee’s top external channel affiliates, said that building a credible and strong personal brand allows affiliates to gain people’s trust, leading to better sales.

Brands utilizing Shopee’s Affiliate Marketing Solutions (AMS) recorded nearly a threefold increase, or 2.8 times year-on-year growth in gross merchandise value (GMV), compared with non-users, according to data presented by the e-commerce giant on Wednesday.

The company also reported a 2.2% increase in new buyer contribution to the platform and a 5.2% growth in affiliate-led traffic.

The affiliate marketing market in Asia Pacific was estimated at over $4.2 billion in 2024, comprising around 23% of the global market valued at more than $18.5 billion, according to Cognitive, an India-based market research and consulting firm.

It projected that Asia Pacific’s affiliate market will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% from 2024 to 2031.

Sheree Gae Gayas, Samsung Philippines’ head of digital commerce for the mobile experience group, said the tech giant began integrating affiliate marketing on Shopee last year.

“It’s not as significant yet. When I say significant, it’s not as scalable yet, but we’ve already seen the difference compared with previous years. The good thing is we don’t have to spend as much,” Ms. Gayas said, noting its effect on their GMV growth.

To become a Shopee affiliate, Filipinos can register on the official Shopee Affiliate website using their Shopee account to apply for approval.

GCMC expansion in Cabuyao backed by private firms

Regional healthcare provider Global Care Medical Center (GCMC) said its partnership with investment firm LeapFrog Investments and equity firm Navegar has secured growth capital to support the expansion of its Cabuyao facility.

“This is very promising. I have a lot of expansion here, a new medical arts building, a new private room, we expanded another 30 private rooms here in Cabuyao,” GCMC Chair Ricardo D. Celino told reporters in an interview on Tuesday.

“We’re going to put up a cat lab (Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory), we purchased an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), we put up another 20 chairs of dialysis, and we expanded our laboratory,” he added.

Apart from its expansion plans in Laguna, the GCMC also aims to improve healthcare services in other provinces in Northern Luzon, such as Pangasinan.

“I don’t want to divulge whatever investment we are planning because we are still looking for another, not just one, but there’s another opportunity in the northern part of Luzon,” Mr. Celino said.

Biju Mohandas, partner and global lead for healthcare at Leapfrog Investments, said that the firm’s first investment in the Philippines, through its partnership with the hospital network, reflects its confidence in the country’s economic growth.

“We are a fund, as I mentioned earlier, that money is our profit with purpose. This seems like a great opportunity to achieve both because there is a massive demand supply mismatch,” he said in a media briefing at the partnership launch.

“If you service it well, with good quality, with the right partners, then you will reap financial rewards as well, and importantly, touch millions of lives,” he added.

For Navegar Vice President for Origination Juan Carlos Camara, partnering with GCMC amplifies the firm’s push to create a more inclusive and accessible community. “I’d like to see its impact on the lives of Filipinos for not just the next few years, but decades and possibly touch the lives of the communities that we operate in.”

The Laguna-based hospital network currently operates four general hospitals and a specialized cancer care center, with a total capacity of over 300 licensed beds supported by 670 doctors. — Almira Louise S. Martinez

Globe sweeps Ookla® 2025 Speedtest Verified Claims and named Most Consistent Mobile and Fixed Network in the Philippines

As the digital habits of Filipinos evolve from basic connectivity to high-bandwidth, real-time engagement, Globe has successfully shifted the industry narrative from a race for coverage to a commitment to network superiority. This focus on Quality of Service and Quality of Experience has been officially validated by Ookla®, the global leader in network intelligence, which recognized Globe as the Most Consistent Mobile Network, Most Consistent Fixed Network, and the provider with the Widest 5G Coverage in the Philippines for the second half of 2025.

In today’s commoditized market, peak speeds are no longer the sole measure of success. Instead, telco performance is increasingly judged by the real-world experience delivered to customers.  This includes reliability that connectivity provides for work, learning, and commerce. Globe’s consistency scores represent a proven ability to meet strict minimum speed thresholds across diverse locations, ensuring that connectivity never becomes a “blind spot” for users.

Validated Standard of Excellence

Ookla’s rigorous analysis of millions of user-initiated Speedtest® results confirms that Globe’s infrastructure delivers a consistent Quality of Service that Filipinos can feel every day.

  • Mobile Experience: Globe achieved a Mobile Consistency Score of 87.51% for Q3-Q4 2025, leading the industry in reliable mobile performance.
  • Fixed Broadband Experience/Consistency: For Q4 2025, Globe recorded a Fixed Consistency Score of 88.84%, providing the foundation for stable home and business internet.
  • Widest 5G Coverage: Globe secured the highest 5G Coverage Score (490), reflecting a strategic network footprint that prioritizes both populated areas and expansive reach.

During a fireside chat with  Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda at the recent PH Telco Summit, Globe President and CEO Carl Cruz said that reported coverage does not always reflect whether users experience consistent, dependable connectivity, especially in remote or disaster-prone areas.

“This is why Globe prioritizes network consistency, a strength recognized by Ookla naming Globe the Most Consistent Mobile and Fixed Network in the Philippines,” Cruz said. “Addressing these gaps requires continued investment not just in coverage, but in capacity, redundancy, and resilience to keep services stable under varying conditions. It’s part of our drive to provide the best and most consistent connectivity because our purpose is to uplift Filipino lives every day, and this includes serving the underserved.”

Aguda stressed the importance of resilient and robust infrastructure, affordability, and accessibility to connectivity as the strong backbone of a digital nation which aligns to what Globe has been championing.

Elevating the Filipino Digital Lifestyle

Globe’s sustained investments in mobile, fiber, and 5G infrastructure are designed to empower all segments of society by providing a network that Filipinos can rely on with total confidence. This consistency is reflected in Globe’s average network speeds, which have seen significant growth: mobile speeds now average 34.8 Mbps (an 8% YoY increase), while broadband speeds have surged to 120.4 Mbps (a 36% YoY increase).

These speeds ensure that the quality of experience remains high across the most commonly used applications. For instance, while 1080p video streaming typically requires only 4-5 Mbps on mobile or 5 Mbps on broadband, Globe’s network provides ample headroom for stability. This ensures that professionals and remote workers enjoy seamless video calls on platforms like Zoom (which requires 3 Mbps) without interruption, and families can support 1080p FHD streaming and smart-home devices across multiple screens simultaneously.

“What matters is how consistently our customers stay connected in their daily lives, even if they are at work, at home, and on the move. Our focus remains on building a network that is resilient and designed around real experiences,” Cruz said. By prioritizing this Quality of Experience, Globe ensures that MSMEs can power digital payments and content creators can engage audiences in real-time, providing the foundation for the courage and confidence needed to navigate daily life.

AMA Education System (AMAES) supports nationwide Lab for All program in Negros Occidental

Even as Bago City reeled from the effects of Typhoon Verbena, one thing remained unmistakably present: the quiet determination to serve.

Against the backdrop of challenging weather and logistical hurdles, the AMA Education System (AMAES) pressed on with its commitment to community healthcare, joining the second leg of the nationwide Lab for All initiative in Negros Occidental. The medical mission, held in Bago City, reached more than 1,500 residents — many from vulnerable and underserved sectors — who lined up not just for treatment, but for reassurance and care.

At the heart of the effort was the AMA School of Medicine, working alongside medical volunteers from AMA Computer College Bacolod. Physicians and medical students provided free consultations, basic diagnostic services, and immediate medical guidance — small yet crucial interventions that emphasized early detection and preventive care at a time when access to health services was especially limited.

The activity formed part of Lab for All, a nationwide healthcare program spearheaded by First Lady Louise Liza Araneta-Marcos, designed to bring essential medical services closer to communities. In Bago City, the initiative unfolded in coordination with the Department of Health and other government agencies, ensuring that the services delivered were aligned with national health priorities.

Beyond the numbers, the mission reflected a deeper philosophy embedded within AMAES — one that places education and service side by side. Medical students were not merely observers; they were active participants, gaining firsthand experience in community-based healthcare, inter-agency collaboration, and crisis-context response. For many, it was a formative encounter with the realities of public health beyond the classroom.

During the activity, the First Lady expressed her appreciation for the continued support of Amable R. Aguiluz V and Amable C. Aguiluz IX, acknowledging their sustained involvement in advancing the goals of Lab for All. Their leadership has helped reinforce the role of private educational institutions in national healthcare efforts, particularly in reaching communities often left on the margins.

As the medical mission concluded, it left behind more than completed consultations or filled prescriptions. It underscored a message that resonates strongly in times of adversity: that education, when paired with service, becomes a powerful force for nation-building.

In Bago City, amid storm recovery and uncertainty, the presence of AMAES and its volunteers stood as a reminder that healthcare — delivered with purpose and compassion — remains a cornerstone of resilience.

Thailand’s election commission faces pressure over vote transparency

PIXABAY

BANGKOK — Thailand’s election commission faced pressure on Wednesday over an alleged lack of transparency in vote counting across more than a dozen constituencies following Sunday’s general election that was swept by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s party.

Almost immediately after polls closed at 5 p.m. (1000 GMT) on Sunday, members of the public flagged irregularities in the vote count on social media.

These included videos showing ballots being counted in the dark, valid votes incorrectly marked as spoiled, and discrepancies between figures recorded at polling stations and those entered into the election commission’s online system.

Reuters could not independently verify the authenticity of the claims.

The People’s Party, which led most pre-election polls but came in a distant second behind Anutin’s Bhumjaithai Party, said it accepted the results but has sought recounts in 18 constituencies.

The third-placed Pheu Thai Party backed a review in areas where the public has raised doubts, while the pro-military United Thai Nation Party called for a nationwide recount.

“If the election commission didn’t do anything wrong, a recount – no matter how many times – would lead to the same result,” Rukchanok Srinork, a winning People’s Party candidate, told reporters. “Then, why not do a recount, so that people can see the result clearly?”

‘PUBLIC WILL LOSE CONFIDENCE’
With nearly 95% of polling stations reporting, preliminary results showed the Bhumjaithai Party leading with 193 of the 500 parliamentary seats.

The results have yet to be officially certified by the election commission, a process that must be completed within 60 days of the general election.

“If transparency is not shown quickly, the public will lose confidence,” former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who leads the Democrat Party, told reporters on Wednesday. “Whenever a process does not have legitimacy, we have seen how it goes in other countries.”

The situation has sparked small protests nationwide, with a Thai hashtag #RecountForTheWholeCountry trending on X in Thailand since Monday.

The election commission said as of Wednesday, it had received 113 formal complaints, all of which were being investigated.

“If an incident occurred at any polling station – whatever the shortcoming – you can file a complaint,” Phasakorn Siriphakayaporn, deputy secretary-general of the Election Commission, said at a press conference. “We will ensure fairness.”

Vote62, an independent election watchdog, has recorded more than 5,000 complaints nationwide, including over 1,000 cases where official vote count tallies at polling stations differed from those of independent observers, according to its website.

BADMINTON COURT PROTEST
At a badminton court used to store ballot boxes in Chonburi province, around 80 kilometers from the capital Bangkok, dozens of people sat in protest on Wednesday, demanding a recount.

Local voters and election commission officials have clashed following allegations that discarded tally sheets found in the area did not match officially reported results and ballot boxes did not have the mandatory cable tying the lids shut.

The commission said on Tuesday that it would take two days to investigate the allegations in Chonburi before deciding whether to recount, while rejecting broader criticism over transparency.

Prime Minister Anutin, who has said that he is awaiting official results before deciding on a coalition, told reporters on Tuesday that government formation could wait if there are reasons for a vote recount.

“If a recount can put people’s minds at ease, then the election commission should consider it under the law,” he said. “The government can wait, and continue in a caretaker role.” — Reuters

Cambodia says it has closed almost 200 scam centers in fraud crackdown

KAMPOT, Cambodia — Cambodia has closed almost 200 scam centers in a crackdown on transnational fraud in recent weeks, a senior government official said, with authorities providing rare access to one center in a bid to show they are tackling the sophisticated operations targeting people across the globe.

“There are about 190 locations that we have sealed off now,” Chhay Sinarith, senior minister and chair of Cambodia’s Commission for Combating Online Scams, told Reuters in Phnom Penh this week before the visit to a sprawling complex in Kampot province near the Vietnam border.

Mr. Chhay said 173 senior crime figures linked to the centers had been arrested and 11,000 workers deported in a campaign that began late last year after the US indicted and then China extradited a China‑born alleged scam kingpin in the strongest international move so far against the criminal networks.

Since then, thousands of scam workers, some of them trafficking victims confined in brutal conditions, have fled compounds in recent weeks seeking to return home, in what Amnesty International has called a “humanitarian crisis.”

At the Kampot compound, reporters were shown large work rooms with rows of computer stations and desks strewn with documents instructing how to scam Thai victims, as well as studio booths for phone calls and a fake Indian police station.

The Indian embassy in Phnom Penh did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Authorities said there were no arrests made inside the Kampot casino complex known as My Casino. Workers fled after the detention of alleged boss and tycoon Ly Kuong, and police said they lacked the manpower to detain those leaving.

Contact details for representatives of Ly Kuong, who is under arrest, were not immediately available.

“We have only about 1,000 policemen in the entire province and there are about 300 military policemen,” said Kampot provincial police chief Mao Chanmothurith during the government‑organized tour. “Even with both forces combined, we still can’t stop them because there were about 6,000 to 7,000 of them when they left this place,” he said.

The visit came a week after Thai officials led media and foreign delegates to see a separate compound, in Cambodian territory that Thai troops bombed and occupied during a border conflict in December. Reuters found similar materials, including fake police stations from multiple countries, as well as reams of documents.

Cambodia long played down the existence of scam compounds in the country, and previous crackdowns have done little to stop their spread. Officials say the latest campaign is broader in scope, with a focus on closing sites and detaining senior figures. — Reuters

Pakistan central bank chief expects broader recovery than IMF forecast

STOCK PHOTO | Image by Uzairmaqbool from Pixabay

KARACHI — Pakistan’s central bank chief expects the economy to grow as much as 4.75% this fiscal year, pushing back against a recent downgrade by the International Monetary Fund.

Governor Jameel Ahmad, in written responses to Reuters, argued the recovery is broader and more durable than headline export data suggest.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) raised its FY26 growth forecast to 3.75–4.75% at its January meeting, 0.5 percentage point higher than its previous range, despite a contraction in exports in the first half of the year and a widening trade deficit.

The governor said differences in projections were not unusual and reflected timing issues, including the IMF’s incorporation of flood-related assessments in its latest outlook.

“All these sources and indicators, along with FY26-Q1 data, point to a broad-based recovery in all three sectors of the economy,” he said. He added that the central bank believed that agricultural activity had remained resilient despite floods and “it is even performing better than its targets.”

He added that financial conditions had eased significantly following a cumulative 1,150‑basis‑point cut in the policy rate since June 2024, and that the full impact was still feeding through. This, he said, was supporting growth while preserving price and economic stability.

The central bank last month held its benchmark rate at 10.5%, defying expectations for a cut.

The divergence with the IMF comes at a delicate moment for Pakistan, which is emerging from a balance-of-payments crisis under a $7 billion IMF program.

EXPORT DRAG, REMITTANCE CUSHION
Pakistan’s previous growth spurts have often led to currency pressure and a decline in foreign exchange reserves, making the sustainability of the current rebound a key question for investors.

Mr. Ahmad said high-frequency indicators and 6% growth in large-scale manufacturing in July–November point to strengthening demand, while agriculture has remained resilient despite last year’s floods, he said.

While exports declined in the first half of the fiscal year, Mr. Ahmad said the fall reflected low global prices and border disruptions rather than softer activity.

He said the current account deficit should stay within 0–1% of GDP, as strong remittances offset the wider trade gap and lift reserves above program targets, with further gains expected due to Eid festival-related inflows.

“Additionally, if the government decided to tap global capital markets for any debt issuance, then that would be on the upside of our current assessment,” he said.

Pakistan plans to issue panda bonds, a yuan-denominated debt sold in China’s domestic market around the upcoming Lunar New Year, as part of efforts to diversify external financing and broaden its investor base.

He said the central bank has been consistently purchasing dollars in the interbank market to strengthen foreign exchange buffers, with data published regularly.

He said that while economic stability has improved, structural reforms remain key to sustaining stronger growth and improving productivity. — Reuters

Philippines urges China to keep tone ‘calm’ as rhetoric heats up

SENATE PRESIDENT Vicente C. Sotto III speaks with Majority Leader Juan Miguel F. Zubiri during plenary debates on a resolution condemning statements made by the Chinese Embassy in Manila against Philippine officials. — PHILIPPINES STAR/RYAN BALDEMOR

MANILA — The Philippine foreign ministry urged the Chinese Embassy in Manila on Wednesday to be “constructive” in its statements amid an escalating war of words between Chinese diplomats and public officials, including senators.

The Department of Foreign Affairs’ newly appointed maritime affairs spokesperson, Rogelio Villanueva, said that responses should be delivered in a “calm” and “professional” manner.

“The DFA values candid and vigorous debate with its foreign counterparts on important issues consistent with the Philippines’ democratic tradition,” he said.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Villanueva’s remarks came after the Senate approved a resolution on Monday condemning statements made by the Chinese Embassy in Manila, which criticized Philippine officials for defending the country’s sovereignty and maritime rights in the South China Sea.

The Chinese embassy rejected and condemned the resolution, calling it a “political stunt.”

On Tuesday, the Philippines’ Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Romualdez, underscored the need to “cool” the temperature between China and the Philippines, saying that the relationship between the two countries should not be defined solely by the maritime dispute.

The Philippines and China have been locked in a series of maritime confrontations in recent years, with the Philippines accusing China of aggressive actions inside its exclusive economic zones, including dangerous maneuvers, water-cannoning, and interference in resupply missions.

China, in turn, has accused the Philippines of intruding into what it claims as its territory. — Reuters

CICC logs 18 love scams in January

Usec Renato "Aboy" A. Paraiso at Google's Safer Internet Day event at Google Philippines' office in Taguig City.— EDG ADRIAN A. EVA
At least 18 complaints of love scams were logged in January, according to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) on Tuesday, noting that the figure does not yet capture the full scale of the incidents.

“I don’t think that’s the whole landscape that we’re looking at. What we notice is that when people become victims of love scams, they’re afraid (to file complaints),” Renato “Aboy” A. Paraiso, CICC Executive Director, told reporters on the sidelines of Google’s Safer Internet Day celebration.

“They are embarrassed to report because everyone will know that they were victimized, that they were deceived,” he added in Filipino.

The victims’ demographics are “widespread,” as AI has enabled scammers to profile their targets, making attacks more targeted to different kinds of consumers, Mr. Paraiso said.

Complaints among youths, who are considered tech-savvy, were also reported, he added.

In its 2025 scam report released earlier this month, the CICC said it logged 123 love scam complaints, with 53 involving complainants aged 18 to 29 — the highest among all age groups.

Other complainants were aged between 30 and 39 (38 complainants) and 40 to 49 (18 complainants).

It also reported that most victims were women, with 63 cases, followed by men with 56, while four incidents were undisclosed.

The acting executive director encouraged victims and those who almost became victims to call the CICC 1326 hotline to file complaints.

“Mag-report kayo sa amin para makapagsagawa kami ng mga intervention at matulungan ang iba na hindi na mabiktima,” [Report these incidents to us so we can carry out interventions and help prevent others from being scammed], he said.

Coinciding with Love Month, the CICC earlier launched its campaign called “AI, AI-AI FEB-IBIG,” a pun on a popular Filipino song, which aims to raise awareness about AI-driven love scams through various content posted on social media.

Meanwhile, global tech giant Google shared its latest suite of safety features aimed at protecting users against various cyberthreats.

Among these are the use of Google Lens and the Circle to Search feature, which was launched last December, to help users spot fraudulent messages.

“Our AI analyzes the messages and tells you in real time if it’s likely a scam or not. It’s like having a security expert looking over your shoulder,” Mervin Teo V. Wenk, head of communications and public affairs for Google Philippines, said during his presentation.

Users can use the feature by simply taking a screenshot of a suspicious link or message and uploading it to Google Lens for scanning, or by long-pressing the home button on an Android device to enable the circle-to-search option.

Google also shared its Theft Detection Lock feature on Android devices, where the screen automatically locks if the device is detected to have been stolen.

The “About this image” tool allows users to check the origin of a photo, while Google’s SynthID technology can help users identify AI-generated or deepfake images.

These digital safety features underscore Google Philippines’ Safer Internet Day campaign this year, “Sa Internet, Ingat!” highlighting how AI can be a powerful tool for online safety. — Edg Adrian A. Eva

Super Bowl LX sets US media record

SUPER BOWL LX was the second-most watched show in United States TV history and set a domestic record for peak viewership, the NFL revealed on Tuesday.

Sunday’s game in Santa Clara, California, where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the New England Patriots, 29-13, averaged 124.9 million viewers across NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, and other digital platforms. It fell short of the record 127.7 million who watched last year’s Super Bowl but ranked No. 2 and became the most-watched show in NBC history.

The viewership peaked at 137.8 million during the second quarter, setting an American TV record.

Soon after that, the halftime show starring Bad Bunny averaged 128.2 million viewers in the United States in the 8:15-8:30 p.m. ET window.

The Puerto Rican superstar generated over four billion views on social media within the first 24 hours after his performance, making it what the NFL called its “most-consumed halftime show of all time on NFL social platforms.”

According to NBC, its streaming platform Peacock experienced its best day ever on Sunday, driven by both the Super Bowl audience and Winter Olympics viewership. Estimates were not immediately available.

“The Super Bowl and the NFL once again delivered a blockbuster audience across the NBC broadcast network, Peacock and Telemundo, and provided an unprecedented lead-in to our Primetime in Milan coverage,” NBC Sports President Rick Cordella said in a statement.

“The Super Bowl and the Olympics are the two most powerful events in the world, and we salute our talented production, tech and announce teams who delivered best-in-class presentations for our viewers, stations and partners.” — Reuters

Taiwan says budget delay risks ‘rupture’ in line of defense against China

TAIPEI — The delay in passing a $40 billion special military budget risks a “rupture” in the joint line of defense against China, Taiwan’s defense minister said on Wednesday, as President Lai Ching-te urged the opposition-controlled parliament to approve the spending measure.

Mr. Lai last year proposed the defense boost to counter China, which views the island as its own territory. But the opposition has refused to review the proposal and instead advanced its own, less expensive proposals, which only fund some US weapons.

The main opposition party Kuomintang (KMT), whose vice chairman visited Beijing last week, said it supports defense spending but will not sign “blank cheques” and has a right to fully scrutinize the legislation, blaming Mr. Lai for the impasse.

Speaking to reporters at the presidential office, Mr. Lai said he had never asked lawmakers to pass the spending unconditionally, reiterating that the government was happy to provide a detailed explanation on its plans.

“But national defense, so closely tied to national security, sovereignty, and our very survival, should be an area where we unite and present a common front to the outside,” Mr. Lai said.

Countries including Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines are all boosting their defense spending, he added.

Speaking at the same news conference, where the heads of the army, navy and air force all attended, Defense Minister Wellington Koo said the government had had intensive talks with the US on what weapons Taiwan needed.

“In the Indo-Pacific, especially among the countries along the first island chain, Taiwan plays a uniquely critical, almost fated, role,” Mr. Koo said, referring to an area that stretches from Japan down through Taiwan and into the Philippines.

“We do not want Taiwan to become the rupture in the Indo-Pacific collective deterrence posture.”

The US is Taiwan’s most important international backer, despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties, and arms sales to Taipei are a constant source of friction between Beijing and Washington.

The US has backed the $40 billion spending plan, and in December the Trump administration announced $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, the largest ever US weapons package for the island.

Speaking in Beijing on Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said it was up to China how to “resolve” the Taiwan issue, and the US should “stop interfering in China’s internal affairs”.

Mr. Lai said Taiwan’s strengthening of its defense is not because it wants to invade anyone, but because it wants to safeguard its way of life.

US lawmakers have pushed for Taiwan’s parliament to pass the spending plans, and some have criticized the opposition for blocking Mr. Lai’s plans and cosying up to Beijing.

“China’s threat is becoming increasingly serious. Taiwan’s defense budget must be passed smoothly. This represents Taiwan’s resolve, and it also shows that Taiwan is fulfilling its responsibilities as a member of the international community,” Mr. Lai said. — Reuters
