Formula Vee, Herbie, World Rally: Volkswagen does motor sports

VOLKSWAGEN founded its motor sport division, originally called Formel V Europa e.V., in 1966, two years before Herbie surprised a fictional California racing scene in the Walt Disney flick The Love Bug. In 1969 the car maker held for the first time at Nurburgring’s Nordschleife track its Formula Vee series, a class for single-seat, open-wheel race cars using Volkswagen’s seminal flat-four engine and other cobbled up Volkswagen parts. The brand has not left the racing circuit since then.
On the same day that this year’s edition of 24 Hours Nurburgring started — May 12 — Volkswagen’s Philippine operation also took part in a motor sport activity, albeit one that is markedly slower, less demanding, and inarguably smaller in scale than the German endurance classic. Fielding a Volkswagen Golf GTS and a Jetta (both in TDI DSG Highline spec), Volkswagen Philippines joined what is colloquially known as a “tulip rally,” a “racing” discipline that puts emphasis on navigation over driving. The objective here is for an entry car — ideally with three people on board (driver plus route and time navigators) — to arrive at checkpoints as close as possible to a prescribed time. The challenge facing teams is that the route and the prescribed time over which a series of checkpoints — the locations of these are not revealed on the route book — have to be reached are revealed to them only at the start of the activity. Using smart phones or GPS navigation and similar devices are not permitted in plotting the route.
The local version in which Volkswagen participated — the STV Auto Rally Corporate Challenge — saw 40 cars navigating newly developed areas inside the Clark Freeport Zone, the back roads of Floridablanca and Dinalupihan in Pampanga and Bataan, and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. Teams, which had to follow traffic laws, hunted for the numerous checkpoints along the route during the daylong event — which also proved an ideal way to enjoy driving around some less traveled places north of Manila. The spirit of a tulip rally, after all, is more road trip than road race.
In stark contrast are the highly competitive pursuits of Volkswagen Motorsport (as the outfit has been called beginning 2004). From 1969 onward the division has competed in rallies and several formula series, apart from staging its own events like the Formula Super Vee and one-make cup races using the Scirocco, Lupo and Polo, among other models. By 1980 Volkswagen, using its military-use Iltis, has clinched the overall Dakar Rally title. It repeated this achievement three more times on the trot — in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
On the circuit, John Nielsen took the 1982 German Formula 3 driver’s title aboard a Volkswagen, then the unofficial World Formula 3 Championship in Macau two years later. The brand duplicated its German Formula 3 victory in 1990 with then rising star Michael Schumacher at the wheel.
Volkswagen’s stint in World Rally is no less interesting. The car maker may initially have a very modest record in the series — it took Group A honors in 1986 — but then it made up for the decades-long lull when Sebastien Ogier, driving a WRC Polo, strung together four straight world titles for himself and the brand. Volkswagen was crowned World Rally champion in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

New 911 GT3 RS sets Nurburgring lap record

PORSCHE announced its new 911 GT3 RS has become the third Porsche production model to lap Nurburgring’s Nordschleife circuit in Germany in under seven minutes.
Company race driver Kevin Estre set a lap time of six minutes and 56.4 seconds around the 20.6-kilometer Nordschleife track — a benchmark for road-approved sports cars, Porsche said. The time is 24 seconds faster than the best lap achieved by the previous GT3 RS model. The other Porsches that lapped the track in under seven minutes are the 918 Spyder and the 911 GT2 RS.
The 911 GT3 RS is based on the 911 GT3, but gets a motor sport-developed chassis; a 520-hp, 4.0-liter, naturally aspirated, flat-six engine; and a recalibrated rear axle steering. The engine makes 20 hp more than the engine in the previous model, as well as that in the 911 GT3. It bolts to a specially calibrated seven-speed PDK. Porsche said the car can sprint from a standstill to 100 kph in 3.2 seconds and reach a 312-kph top speed.
Ensuring that the power gets to the tarmac are a set of staggered-size footwear. In front are 20-inch wheels wrapped in new 265/35 tires, which Porsche said “enhance agility and steering behavior.” The rear wheels measure 21 inches and are fitted with 325/30 tires, which improve traction.
“The GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. This is thanks to the new generation of tires for road going sports cars. I like the engine of the GT3 RS a lot. Up to 9,000 revs per minute from a six-cylinder engine just feels fantastic. The sound is a dream and the torque is massive,” Mr. Estre said after setting the lap record.
Porsche said the 29-year-old Estre competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans) aboard a 911 RSR, and in the ADAC GT Masters in a 911 GT3 R.

Honda to sell 100 more Civic Type Rs in PHL

IN 2017 Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) brought in for the first time the Civic Type R. All 100 units allocated locally were sold before the end of the year.
As a “response to the overwhelming market acceptance and persistent demand” for the model, HCPI said it is offering this year 100 more Civic Type Rs. The company explained cars wearing the Type R badge are the “highest performance version” of a Honda model, and are “racing-inspired road cars” that represent the concept of “minimizing weight while maximizing power, responsiveness, dynamic stability and braking performance.”
The Civic Type R, a nameplate that marks its 26th anniversary this year is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged VTEC engine that makes 306 hp at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm at 2,500-4,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission (equipped with a rev match control system that can be switched on or off) that sends power to the front wheels through a limited-slip differential.
Other special items that differentiate the Civic Type R from the “normal” Civic are bespoke settings for its chassis, suspension and steering; Honda’s four-wheel Adaptive Damper System that adjusts itself to different driving conditions; Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers in front; variable-ratio electric power-assisted steering that adjusts according to the driving mode selected — +R, Sport, and Comfort; Type R grille, spoiler, vortex generators, carbon-fiber-like trim on the front and rear bumpers (as well as on the side skirts); and 20-inch Berlina Black alloys that are wrapped in 245/30 R20 tires. The car’s cabin gets bucket seats with suede-like red and black fabric trim; steering wheel with red leather inserts; carbon-fiber inlay; and an exclusive Type R serial number plate unique to every car.
For 2018, HCPI said the Civic Type R is available in Polished Metallic Metal paint job, along with the colors — Championship White and Rallye Red — it was previously offered in. The company added reservations can now be placed at any of its 37 dealerships, with deliveries beginning in October. No price has been announced. The 2017 models sold for P2.980 million.

1 in 2 Volvo cars sold in 2025 will be electric

HALF of Volvo Cars’ sales by 2025 will be full-electric vehicles, the company bared its target in a recent statement.
This follows an earlier announcement that says all new Volvo models released beginning 2019 will be available as either a mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, or battery electric vehicle.
The company’s strategy to generate half of its sales from electric cars by 2025 positions it as a powerful player in China, the world’s leading market for electrified cars.
Volvo said the Chinese government plans to have new-energy vehicles account for more than 20% of the country’s annual car sales by 2025, which equates to more than seven million vehicles, based on Chinese government forecasts.
“Last year, we made a commitment to electrification in preparation for an era beyond the internal combustion engine,” said Hakan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “We reinforce and expand that commitment in the world’s leading market for electrified cars. China’s electric future is Volvo Cars’ electric future.”
Volvo Cars currently produces the S90, S90L T8 Twin Engine in XC60 T8 Twin Engine in China.
Since 2010 Volvo Cars has been owned by the Geely Holding Group, a Chinese automotive manufacturing company.
The company said it would introduce the Volvo XC40 SUV in the Philippines within the year.

‘Lightweighting’ tech to benefit future GM cars

GENERAL Motors (GM) is using a new design software in creating the next generation of vehicle “lightweighting” — basically shaving weight off cars to make these more fuel efficient and cleaner.
In a statement, the company — maker of Chevrolet cars and trucks, among others — said it has tapped US software company Autodesk for a technology that “uses cloud computing and AI-based algorithms to rapidly explore multiple permutations of a parts design.” The software allows GM to determine the “best part design part option” as it can generate hundreds of design options based on goals and parameters — weight, strength, material choice, fabrication method, and more — set by company engineers.
“This disruptive technology provides tremendous advancements in how we can design and develop components for our future vehicles to make them lighter and more efficient,” said Ken Kelzer, GM vice-president for global vehicle components and subsystems. “When we pair the design technology with manufacturing advancements such as 3-D printing, our approach to vehicle development is completely transformed and is fundamentally different to co-create with the computer in ways we simply couldn’t have imagined before.”
GM said it is already integrating lightweight, high-strength materials in its Chevrolet Colorado pickup and Trailblazer SUV.
It added it has used the Autodesk software to produce a proof-of-concept component — a seat bracket — that is 40% lighter and 20% stronger than the existing part on which it is based.
GM said it would collaborate with Autodesk on “projects involving generative design, additive manufacturing and materials science.”
“Generative design is the future of manufacturing, and GM is a pioneer in using it to lightweight their future vehicles,” GM quoted Scott Reese, Autodesk senior vice-president for manufacturing and construction products.
GM said that since 2016 it has launched 14 new models with a total mass reduction of more than 2,250 kilograms, or more than 157 kilograms per vehicle. Most of the weight reductions are a result of material and technology advancements. Of those models, more than half of the vehicles shed at least 135 kilograms.
The company noted that lighter components could create vehicles with more interior space and features, as well as increase their range and performance.
