ADOBO MAGAZINE is getting those in the creative and design professions sizzling to flex their artsy muscles in this year’s adobo Design Awards Asia (aDAA). The competition is now on its eighth year (the magazine is on its 10th), and the competition runs around the theme, “How do you inspire humanity through design?”

This year’s jury will be headed by legendary designer Bruce Duckworth, who is the incumbent president of D&AD (otherwise known as Design and Art Direction, a global creative, design, and advertising association) and principal at Turner Duckworth. Mr. Duckworth, with his partner David Turner, won the first Cannes Grand Prix for design, and even won a Grammy for their album artwork for Metallica. He will be joined by Jowee Alviar of Team Manila, Dave Ferrer of J. Walter Thompson Philippines, calligrapher Patrick Cabral, Dan Matutina of Plus63 Design, Robert Alejandro of RAD Design Philippines, Quark Henares of Globe Studios, and Ivan Despi of The Acid House, among others.

Angel Guerrero, founder, president, and editor-in-chief of adobo magazine said during a press conference earlier this month in Makati, “I’m proud to say, it’s an Asian magazine, but based out of the Philippines.” She noted that adobo reaches a global audience of about 80,000 readers from the fields of advertising, media, design, and arts and culture.

Asked how Filipinos can be creative in the way that they are, Ms. Guerrero said, “I think when you look at the ecosystem of print outputs around Asia, we are just under-leveraged. People are not aware of the [amount] of talent we have here. That’s why Adobo does what it does. I celebrate and profile Philippines creatives. I think in our culture, we are very expressive… whether we sing, we dance, we write, we draw; it’s all there.”
