Comelec moves filing of candidacy for village, youth leader elections to August

THE COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) has reset the filing of certificates of candidacy for the village and youth council elections to August following a senator’s request.
“We reset the filing of certificates of candidacy for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from July 3 to 7 to August 28 to September 2,” Comelec Chairperson George Erwin M. Garcia told reporters in a Viber message.
Senator Francis N. Tolentino earlier urged Comelec to defer the filing to prevent early “politicking” and election-related violence. He said it would be premature to push through the filing of candidacies in July.
The village elections, which were originally scheduled for December last year, had been moved to October this year.
Police official Matthew P. Baccay earlier told a House committee that the police would implement tighter security measures leading up to the October village and youth elections.
Comelec will release more details about the period for filing candidacies at a later date, Mr. Garcia said. — John Victor D. Ordoñez
