EIGHT BUSINESS establishments in Iloilo City selling construction materials are facing charges for alleged violation of the Product Standards (PS) Law, according to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iloilo Provincial Director Diosdado P. Cadena, Jr. Formal complaints have been filed, said Mr. Cadena, but he declined to name the violators pending hearings. “Based on the investigation, the products they sell lack PS markings and PS license,” he said. “The summons only arrived (Monday) and so they have to submit their answer, which will be evaluated by the adjudication officer whether they are guilty or not,” he added. The eight establishments are among the 15 earlier found to have standards violations. The seven others have been penalized with at least P17,500 per company. Under the law, penalties could reach up to P500 million and cancellation of license, depending on the gravity of offense. Meanwhile, the DTI is holding the five-day Product Standards Expo at the Plazuela de Iloilo until Oct. 13, intended to help create awareness and sense of vigilance among consumers on product quality. “The exhibit is a way for the public to see the products which are compliant to the law as well as how the PS mark and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers look like,” Mr. Cadena said. — Louine Hope U.
