World champion Yulo banners next wave of SEA Games entrants

GYMNAST CALOY YULO — PAOLO DEL ROSARIO/ONE SPORTS

A SLEW of world-class Filipino athletes led by gymnast Carlos “Caloy” Yulo joins the Philippine team flying to Hanoi for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, with the delegation hoping to conduct a successful overall title defense after topping the medal haul in the 2019 edition.

Headlining the team being deployed to the 31st Southeast Asian Games is Mr. Yulo, who won the world title in floor exercise and vault, and his Japanese coach Munehiro Kugiyama. They count themselves among the 193-strong team members scheduled to land in Hanoi on Tuesday, two days before the biennial games officially stat at the My Dinh National Stadium in the Vietnamese capital.

Also in that group are some of the country’s best and brightest like world billiards champions Efren “Bata” Reyes, Carlo Biado and Rubilen Amit, two-time tennis junior Grand Slam titlist Alex M. Eala.

The star-studded group is looking for a repeat of the 2019 edition, when the Philippines posted a historic haul of 149 golds, 117 silver and 121 bronzes.

Host Vietnam, however, has promised to stage Games that is more in line with the events contested in a typical Olympics.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham Tolentino said he was pleased part of the delegation could cast its vote in the May 9 election before departing for Hanoi.

“Most of them will have exercised their right of suffrage. We are prepared and comfortable with their arrival because our staff will have gained experience from the first wave,” Mr. Tolentino said.

Mr. Tolentino cast his vote on Monday in Tagaytay, which he represents in Congress.

Other athletes flying to Hanoi on Tuesday are the volleyball, badminton, bodybuilding, fencing, table tennis, athletics, wushu, and swimming teams.

A six-man medical team and 12-member media contingent will travel with the same wave.

“We are ready to receive our athletes and coaches and extend the assistance they need once they arrive here. They have to be free of distractions so they can focus on their respective competitions ahead,’’ according to Ramon Fernandez, the country’s chef de mission and Philippine Sports Commission board member.

Already settled in Vietnam are the kickboxing, handball, men’s and women’s football, rowing, chess, kurash, pencak silat, men’s 3×3 basketball, women’s basketball, golf, triathlon/duathlon, and beach handball teams, as well as the lone diving entry, Fil-Am Ariana Drake.

The bulk of track and field athletes and officials (50) will fly ahead of the big group on Wednesday, including pole vault Asian record holder EJ Obiena.

Joining them are the esports, bowling, cycling, golf and jiujitsu contingents, and parts of the swimming team. — Joey Villar

RLC unit expands Cebu property

RLC Residences’ AmiSa Private Residences is located at Punta Engaño Road, Lapu-Lapu City, Mactan, Cebu. — COMPANY HANDOUT

MACTAN, CEBU — The residential division of Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) is expanding its resort-inspired residential project in Mactan, Cebu.

RLC Residences on Saturday launched the fourth tower of the AmiSa Private Residences, located along Punta Engaño Road, Lapu-Lapu City.

AmiSa Tower D is ideal for buyers who want a luxurious vacation home, with unobstructed views of the Magellan Bay, the Olango Island, and the Hilutungan Channel.

The 16-storey tower offers 176 studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units with balcony, with sizes ranging from 40 square meters (sq.m.) to 83 sq.m.

“One of the key changes during the pandemic was that for people, home has become more important also as an office. They prefer larger spaces now. It’s noticeable not just with the demand we’re seeing with AmiSa but with other projects as well, which is why we decided to shift the unit mix to be skewed towards larger-sized units,” RLC Residences Senior Vice-President – Business Unit General Manager John Richard Sotelo said during a media briefing here on May 7.

Each floor will have 12 units — eight one-bedroom, two studio and two two-bedroom units.

Ma. Czarina Theresa Lugue, RLC Residences business development and design department senior director, said they introduced new features in AmiSa D units such as work-from-home areas, pantry drawers and walk-in closets for selected units.

“The WFH spaces are really carved out and it’s designed really for when you have video meetings, lighting, background and outlets. It was designed for the customer in mind,” she said.

RLC Residences also included smart home features in AmiSa D units, such as smart locks, smart lights, and audio/video intercom system. The tower is also designed with fiber-optic technology for faster internet connection.

AmiSa D also provides resort-like amenities such as pools, clubhouse, grill area, private theater, jogging trail and a gym.

Unit owners will also get exclusive perks from Dusit Thani Mactan Resort, such as discounts, in-unit spa services and beach access. The residential project is located behind the Dusit Thani Mactan Resort.

The target market for AmiSa D is those who are interested in business and leisure investments, RLC Residences Marketing Head and Chief Integration Officer Karen Cesario said.

“We’re seeing mostly people who are the business leisure type of investors. Those aged between 40s to 60s, those nearing retirement… With the pandemic, most people wanted to live and work in areas that are more calm and serene. This (project) is where they can combine both business and leisure,” Ms. Cesario said.

Ms. Lugue said preselling for AmiSa D units began in February. Units at AmiSa D range from P5.8 million to P16.1 million.

“We’re close to selling it out all our units,” she said.

There are three ready-for-occupancy towers at AmiSa Private Residences. Existing residents are mostly Filipinos living in Cebu City. There are buyers from the US, South Korea and Australia that want a vacation home in the Philippines.

Mr. Sotelo said the three towers did not have any major damage from Typhoon Odette that swept through the province last December 2021.

“We took the opportunity to look at upgrades for the first three buildings, so that if it happens again then it’s at least a stronger structure. Thankfully, the three towers did not experience anything major beyond the clubhouse. We are fixing and upgrading the clubhouse,” he said.

“Hopefully with the upgrades we’re doing, it should make it better.” — Cathy Rose A. Garcia

In Spanish debut, Brian May sings about ‘Another World’

Queen guitarist Brian May — SCREENSHOT FROM YOUTUBE.COM/BRIANMAY/

LONDON —  Decades after studying the skies above the Canary Islands for his PhD in astrophysics, Queen guitarist Brian May has returned to film his Spanish singing debut “Otro Lugar,” a translated version of his old song “Another World.”

The 74-year-old music star traveled to Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro to record his new music video as part of a remastered version of his 1998 solo album also called Another World.

The new album features two versions of the song — in English and in Spanish — with a video for the Spanish version released on Friday.

“It’s magical up there. You’re above the clouds the whole time,” Mr. May told Reuters of Tenerife’s Teide Observatory, which he first visited in 1970 while studying for his PhD.

“They call it the sea of clouds… And to me, it’s the closest to heaven I can ever be.”

Mr. May worked with a friend to translate the song, his first entirely in Spanish. He described it as romantic and “about trying to reach a place where the world is better run.”

“We shot both versions… and the Spanish version came out much better,” Mr. May said. “It flowed from me very easily.”

Mr. May, who shot to global fame with Queen, said he re-released Another World, his second solo album, to reach new audiences. He re-issued his 1992 debut solo album Back to the Light last year.

“I feel I put my heart and soul into these two albums… and none of it’s been available to the new generation for years and years as you can’t get it on Spotify or Apple Music or whatever YouTube… so I felt I wanted to be represented,” he said.

“I also think it’s very relevant… I feel if I was making an album now, I’d make it exactly like this. I would have the same concerns in my heart, more so now because of the terrible state the world is in at the moment.”

Later this month, Mr. May will embark on a UK and European Queen + Adam Lambert Rhapsody Tour, which was twice postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s like kind of having your legs cut off if you’re a performer when you can’t get out there and do what you do,” Mr. May said. “So for us, it will be… a stupendous moment in time when we can resume the stuff that we meant to be doing.” — Reuters

Demand for office space outside NCR seen to step up

COMPANIES, especially call centers, are looking outside the National Capital Region to set up their offices, property consultants said, as they see a trend for the market to expand to other major cities.

“There are several reasons why call centers would want to lease outside of Metro Manila. It makes sense to look at new labor markets. That’s one of the reasons why we see more inquiries in the provinces, especially in cities that are organized and have prepared themselves to host business process outsourcing (BPO) companies,” Leechiu Property Consultants Executive Director Phillip G. Anonuevo said in a virtual interview.

He said that many companies prefer not to be too concentrated in Metro Manila as they seek to diversify their operations.

“Companies will want at least 20% of their operations outside of Metro Manila. In the event of another lockdown, at least they are in more locations. Companies primarily in Metro Manila were caught flat footed, so it took a long time for them to adjust,” he added.

In a report, Colliers Philippines said that it sees the office market finally turning a corner, as it recorded a positive net take-up in the first quarter of 2022 after seven consecutive quarters of negative absorption.

“Outside Metro Manila, we project a sustained demand in Cebu, Pampanga and Iloilo,” it added.

In 2022, Colliers expects the completion of 821,900 square meters of new office space, of which 60% of the new supply is likely to come from the Ortigas central business district, Makati’s fringe and the bay area.

Leechiu Property’s Mr. Anonuevo said that the demand for office space will be affected by the continued adoption of hybrid work amid the pandemic.

In March, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) allowed its registered IT-business process management (IT-BPM) enterprises to operate 70% onsite and 30% on a work-from-home (WFH) arrangement.

“Cutting down on office space does have an effect on rental rates. The work-from-home as a strategy is still a work in progress, still an ongoing discussion amongst companies. Definitely, for companies that employ at least 1,000 people, or occupy several floors in a building, they will probably find a way to reduce their cost by reducing office space,” Mr. Anonuevo said.

“The larger companies will continue studying work from home, as a viable business strategy. It’s too early to tell, but my guess is that the proportion will be 20% of employees who will be allowed to work from home, speaking about non-PEZA companies,” he added.

Colliers said it saw increasing inquiries for flexible workspaces as occupiers implement business continuity plans and explore the viability of plug-and-play offices and swing or temporary offices spaces for their employees. — Luisa Maria Jacinta C. Jocson

Unbeaten early leaders clash in UAAP women’s volleyball

DLSU Lady Spikers — THE UAAP

WITH reigning champion Ateneo in a 0-2 hole, four unbeaten squads collide in a pair of crucial outings, with the winners poised to earn a major advantage in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) (2-0) and the University of the Philippines (UP) (2-0) duel in the opener at 10 a.m. while La Salle (2-0) and National University (NU) (2-0) cross paths at 2 p.m., all with the goal of breaking the four-team logjam at the top of the standings after three matches.

Ateneo (0-2), for its part, shoots for a breakthrough win in the main game at 6 p.m. against Adamson (0-2) while FEU (0-2) and University of the East (UE) (0-2) are hoping for their first wins at 12 p.m.

The headliner, however, is the meeting between the Lady Spikers and Lady Bulldogs, whose hot starts both included statement wins against Ateneo.

Malaking bagay sa amin na naka-dalawang panalo na kami agad, pero marami pa rin kailangan i-improve sa team. Stick lang kami sa system namin moving forward (It’s a big advantage to be at two wins, but we still need to improve lots of things. We hope to stick to our system moving forward),” said coach Karl Dimaculangan after following up his team’s straight-sets opening win over Adamson with a 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22 victory against Ateneo.

La Salle also clipped its rival Ateneo in the opener last week, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20, before taking down Adamson, 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 to pave the way for an early showdown with NU.

“Seeing NU against Ateneo, pinakita talaga nila ‘yung strength nila. Sa atin medyo naga-adjust pa tayo, but hopefully we can show kung ano pa mailalabas ng team (They really showed their strengths. We still need to make a few adjustments, but we hope to demonstrate some other things),” according to deputy coach Benson Bocboc, who spoke in lieu of head coach Ramil de Jesus.

“The UAAP competition this season is very close and short. We’re still gauging all the teams so maybe towards the end of the season, doon natin makikita ‘yung difference (that’s where we will see the difference),” he added. — John Bryan Ulanday

The company’s Johndorf Tower, located within the Cebu Business Park, is expected to be a preferred destination for both IT-BPM, multinational and local firms that are planning to expand.

Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa to be new Doctor Who

Ncuti Gatwa in a scene from Sex Education.

LONDON — Ncuti Gatwa will be the first Black actor to play the lead role in British sci-fi series Doctor Who, taking over from Jodie Whittaker as the 14th incarnation of the Time Lord next year, the BBC said on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Scot, a star of Netflix hit Sex Education, posted two hearts plus a blue square, representing the Doctor’s Tardis, a time-traveling police telephone box, on his Instagram account before the news was confirmed by the broadcaster.

Mr. Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, said he had been keeping the news secret since he was cast in February.

“It’s an incredibly iconic role and an incredibly iconic show, and I just hope I do it justice,” he said on the red carpet for the BAFTA TV awards, where he was up for the best male comedy performance for Sex Education.

“I’m following in some very, very big footsteps, so I am just hoping that I fill them up.”

The Doctor is able to regenerate, allowing different actors to play the role since the series was first broadcast in 1963.

Mr. Gatwa said the show was the “most beautiful form of escapism,” where you could forget about worldly troubles and go into space to battle aliens.

Ms. Whittaker, who announced she was leaving the show last year, was the first woman to play the Doctor.

She will appear in a final special episode to mark the BBC’s centenary later this year.

Showrunner Russell T. Davies, who is returning to Doctor Who after leaving in 2009, said Mr. Gatwa’s talent was “bright and bold and brilliant.”

“I can see him for years exploring the part and taking it somewhere new,” he told Reuters on the red carpet, where he accompanied Mr. Gatwa.

“That’s what I felt. I felt it in my heart that we can go anywhere with this.” — Reuters

Geograce Resources trims net loss to P1.3 million

GEOGRACE Resources Philippines, Inc. reported that it trimmed its net loss to P1.31 million in 2021 from its P2.23-million loss in 2020.

For 2022 and beyond, the company said it is seeking to acquire mining claims or tenements from third parties in various locations.

The planned acquisitions are intended to enable the group to obtain exclusive rights to explore, develop and operate various mining claims throughout the country, expand its potential mineral resource base, and mitigate the risks inherent in exploration by diversifying the areas available to it.

“The company’s capital raising plans are intended to provide the company investable funds and working capital for current and prospective [projects],” it said in its annual report.

Geograce Resources said its strategy will be to invest, buy-in or acquire businesses where it will at least own a significant stake or interest of the investee company’s outstanding capital. The investment amount will allow the company to recognize its proportional share of the equitized earnings from its investee companies.

Currently, Geograce Resources has no active source of income as its subsidiaries are non-operating as of 2021 and 2020.

It said “material uncertainty exists which may cast significant doubt on the group’s ability to continue as a going concern and therefore, the group may be unable to realize its assets and discharge its liabilities in the normal course of business.”

As an investment holding company, Geograce Resources said it would continue to “evaluate various business opportunities and ventures that are viable, growing, and profitable. It is open for other prospective companies and future arrangements.” — Luisa Maria Jacinta C. Jocson

Dennis Orcollo shut out by German opponent at World Pool Masters

PHILIPPINES’ Dennis Orcollo — PHILIPPINE STAR FILE PHOTO

GERMANY’S Joshua Filler stopped the Philippines’ Dennis Orcollo on his tracks with a 7-0 whitewash in the quarterfinals of the World Pool Masters on Sunday night in Gibraltar.

Mr. Filler did not give Mr. Orcollo much table time in the one-sided affair at the Europa Point Sports Complex, breaking and winning the first seven racks to advance to the semis with much to spare.

The 24-year-old Mr. Filler then rallied past former world champion Ko Pin Yi of Chinese Taipei in the Final Four, 7-3, and went on to capture the crown via a 9-6 disposal of Hong Kong’s Lo Ho Sum in the last dance.

It was a bitter ending for Mr. Orcollo, who had been on a rampage in his first two assignments, beating Albania’s Eklert Kaci in the Round of 32, 7-4, and ousting 2021 winner Alexander Kazakis of Greece in the Last 16, 7-0.

The 43-year-old Surigao native had won 14 consecutive racks prior to facing Mr. Filler. Champion of the same tournament in 2010, Mr. Orcollo settled for the $3,750 purse for the quarterfinalists.

Mr. Orcollo was the lone Filipino participant in the annual 9-ball tournament with the other top guns set to carry the country’s colors in the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Vietnam.

Without Mr. Orcollo, the men’s 10-ball gold medalist in the 2019 SEAG in Manila, reigning US Open champion Carlo Biado and Johann Chua banner Team Philippines in Vietnam.

Mr. Biado and Mr. Chua vie in the men’s 9-ball and 10-ball events while 2019 double gold winner Chezka Centeno and 9-ball singles defending champion Rubilen Amit compete in the distaff side.

Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco dela Cruz play for honors in the men’s one-cushion and three-cushion as Alvin Barbero and Jeffrey Roda carry the fight in the men’s snooker events. — Olmin Leyba

BSP seen to hike interest rates by 75 bps on inflation, currency risks

REUTERS

THE BANGKO SENTRAL ng Pilipinas (BSP) may hike benchmark rates by 75 basis points (bps) this year to tame rising inflation and reduce currency risks following the US Federal Reserve’s tightening, Maybank Economics Research said.

The Philippines and Indonesia are expected to see 75 bps in rate increases this year, the biggest among Southeast Asian economies, Maybank Economics Research said in a note late Friday. Malaysia and Thailand are seen hiking rates by 35 bps, while Vietnam is seen raising policy rates by up to 50 bps by the end of 2022.

“ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) central banks may have to deliver more rate hikes if currencies face selling pressure due to the Fed’s more aggressive hikes, or a larger-than-expected surge in inflation,” Maybank Economics Research said.

The BSP kept rates steady at record lows in March, citing the need to ensure economic recovery is already solid before it begins unwinding its pandemic-driven easy policy. At that meeting, the Monetary Board raised its inflation forecast to 4.3%.

BSP Governor Benjamin E. Diokno last month said they may consider a rate hike by June, taking into account the latest economic and labor market data to be released this month and next. This is more hawkish compared with his previous statements that the central bank will only start normalizing policy rates by the second half of the year.

The Monetary Board will hold its next policy review on May 19.

Meanwhile, the Fed increased rates by 25 bps and 75 bps in March and last week, respectively. It has signaled that more rate hikes are coming, together with the reduction in its asset holdings, as it gradually tapers its support for the economy.

Maybank Economics Research said central banks in the region face mounting pressures to start hiking rates sooner amid global monetary policy tightening.

“A repeat of the 2013 taper tantrums and equity sell-off is unlikely given larger foreign exchange reserves and lower foreign investor positions. But tighter global monetary conditions and rising interest rates will dampen ASEAN’s recovery,” it said.

ASEAN central banks also have to confront rising inflation even as price increases remain relatively modest versus what has been seen in advanced economies, Maybank Economics Research said.

It added that every 10% rise in oil prices contributes about 40 bps to inflation reading. The war in Ukraine has stoked global commodity prices and inflation as Russia is among the world’s biggest exporters of oil.

Maybank also noted that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Food Price Index climbed by 33.6% from a year ago to a new record in March, as prices for vegetable oils, cereals and meat each recorded all-time highs. This would affect countries where food is a significant part of the inflation basket, like the Philippines.

“Food accounts for the largest weight in ASEAN countries, with the largest weight in Thailand (38.1%), the Philippines (34.8%) and Vietnam (33.6%),” Maybank said.

Philippine inflation accelerated to a three-year high of 4.9% in April due to rising food, transport and utility prices. This is beyond the 2-4% target of the BSP for the year. — L.W.T. Noble

Ben&Ben, SB19 release collaboration

THE NINE-PIECE band Ben&Ben and P-Pop group SB19 make a stand on the abuse of power and need for public service in the music video of the song “Kapangyarihan.”  “Theater is meant to be experienced live but we used its intrinsic quality in presenting the ‘Kapangyarihan’ music video,” music video director Dexter M. Santos said in a statement. “By infusing the music video with narrative, choreography, set, and costume design as well as video, we hope to deliver a sincere and emphatic performance.” The video is interspersed with snippets of historical context and stories that question leaders and call for a meaningful change.  “The audience is reminded that this is a performance — yet a call to action is demanded from them; that there are bigger and stronger issues that we have to address after watching the performance,” Ben&Ben said in a collective statement. The song marks Ben&Ben and SB19 second collaboration. They first worked together on the rousing pop ballad, “MAPA (Band Version).”  Kapangyarihan” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines.
