Bukayo Saka at the double as dynamic England hits Iran for 6

Netherlands 2-0 Senegal; USA 1-1 Wales

DOHA — England got their World Cup campaign off to a flying start as they rattled in the goals past a shell-shocked Iran and cruised to an impressive 6-2 Group B victory on Monday in a timely return to form for Gareth Southgate’s side.

England, semi-finalists in 2018, came into the tournament without a win in six games, but a dynamic opening 45 minutes in which Jude Bellingham scored his first England goal, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead and Raheem Sterling grabbed a third set up a second-half stroll.

Saka’s second goal allowed England to take their foot off the gas and opened the door for Iran to grab one back through Mehdi Taremi, before substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish rounded off England’s scoring.

Although Iran’s Taremi grabbed another from the penalty spot in the 13th minute of stoppage time, bringing the total to an astonishing 26 minutes in both halves, England’s work was done.

“We haven’t played the best coming into the tournament. There was a lot of talk and speculation about our form but we showed everyone how much quality we have and what we can do,” said Saka, whose last major tournament ended with him missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout.

Yet England manager Gareth Southgate was not getting carried away.

“I’m a miserable so and so, I should be more excited but I’ve got to keep the team on the right track and we will have to be better,” he said, grumbling about the two goals conceded.

OFF-PITCH ISSUES
At a World Cup dominated by politics, despite FIFA’s determination that the football should be left to do the talking, the buildup to the game was overshadowed by issues off the pitch.

England’s captain Harry Kane had abandoned plans to wear a ‘One Love’ armband when FIFA made clear that those who bore the multi-colored symbol of diversity and inclusion could be booked, with the striker opting for a FIFA-approved “No Discrimination” version.

There was also swirling speculation that Iran’s players would use the platform to show solidarity with anti-government protests at home and as the Iranian national anthem blared out, the players stood stony faced and silent.

The game eventually took center stage and it was not long before England were in top gear.

Their cause was helped when Iran’s influential goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand was forced off the pitch after 20 minutes following a sickening clash of heads with a team mate but Southgate’s side took full advantage.

ROLLS ROYCE
England’s 19-year-old midfielder Bellingham purred like a Rolls-Royce in the engine room and his opening goal set England on their way at Khalifa International Stadium.

Timing his run perfectly, Bellingham rose to meet Luke Shaw’s cross, and directed a looping header into the top corner in the 35th minute to become the first player born in or after 2000 to score at the World Cup.

Shaw was the provider again for England’s second as his corner was headed back across the area by Harry Maguire to Saka, who volleyed home expertly.

The game was ended as a contest when Sterling added a third, finishing with the outside of his boot on the volley from Harry Kane’s cross after Bellingham was again involved in the buildup.

England were not done, however, as Saka grabbed his second in the 62nd minute.

Sterling, whose place in the side had been under scrutiny following mixed form for Chelsea, turned in midfield and fed Saka, who jinked, before dropping his shoulder and calmly placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Iran pulled one back when Taremi smashed the ball into the top corner, but Rashford came on in a raft of England changes in the 70th minute and cut inside a defender before slotting his side’s fifth moments later.

Grealish turned in England’s sixth from close range in the 90th minute after fellow substitute Callum Wilson’s run and cross from the right, before Taremi’s late spot-kick, given after a VAR review for a minor shirt pull.

“At the beginning it was clear the difference between high level competitive football… every single week and our players unfortunately they don’t have the same experience,” said Iran manager Carlos Queiroz.

His side face Wales on Friday when England take on the United States.

DUTCH GRAB 2-0 WIN OVER SENEGAL
Cody Gakpo scored a late goal on his World Cup debut and Davy Klaassen added a second deep in stoppage time to give the Netherlands a 2-0 win over Senegal in their Group A clash at the Al Thumama Stadium on Monday.

Coach Louis Van Gaal handed goalkeeper Andries Noppert his first international cap and he had little to do as the Dutch defense stifled the African champions, though he did pull off a superb save in the 73rd minute to parry a stinging shot from Idrissa Gueye.

The Netherlands attack had been wasteful throughout until the 23-year-old Gakpo stole through the middle and beat Edouard Mendy to a cross from Frenkie de Jong to send a glancing header into the net in the 84th minute.

Substitute Klaassen reacted quickest nine minutes into stoppage time to pounce on a rebound from a Memphis Depay shot and fire home to put the Dutch top of the group alongside Ecuador, whom they meet in their next game on Friday.

LATE BALE PENALTY EARNS WALES 1-1 DRAW WITH US
A late penalty by veteran striker Gareth Bale earned Wales a 1-1 draw with the United States on Monday to avoid a losing return to the World Cup after 64 years in a fascinating Group B encounter at a raucous Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.

Dragged down by US defender Tim Ream in the box, Wales’ all-time top scorer stepped up to the penalty spot in the 82nd minute and made no mistake by hammering the ball into the top corner in front of the “Red Wall” of fans.

With one of the youngest teams at the tournament and themselves returning after eight years, the United States started energetically and took a well-deserved 1-0 lead with a 36th minute goal from Timothy Weah. They were unlucky not to go into the break with a bigger advantage against the flat Welsh.

Weah, the son of Liberian president and former World Player of the Year George Weah, timed his run to perfection after a beautifully-weighted pass from Christian Pulisic and slipped the ball past Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey. — Reuters

DLSU targets Final Four slot against the Bulldogs

MVP frontrunner Shonny Winston return after four games absence — THE PHILIPPINE STAR/ RUSSELL PALMA

Games On Wednesday
(Mall of Asia Arena)
11 a.m. — UST vs UP
1 p.m. — NU vs DLSU
4:30 p.m. — ADMU VS UE
6:30 p.m. — FEU vs AdU

TWO separate paths — one to the twice-to-beat bonus and another to the Final Four — gets even narrower today when teams jockey for safe positions in the homestretch of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Reigning champion University of the Philippines (UP), National University (NU) and Ateneo (ADMU) in different matches figure in a tight race to Top 2 as four squads led by streaking De La Salle (DLSU) rumble their way to the semis in the last three games of the eliminations.

Fresh off a crucial loss against De La Salle last weekend, frontrunning UP (10-2) tries to get back on steady track to a No. 1 finish against Santo Tomas (1-10) at 11 a.m. while Ateneo (8-3) shoots for an official Final Four entry at 4:30 p.m. against University of the East (UE) (4-8).

At 6:30 p.m., Adamson University (5-6) and Far Eastern University (4-8) collide as National University (9-3) and De La Salle (5-6) figure in the day’s most pivotal duel in between games at 1 p.m.

The Bulldogs, who sealed their semifinals spot with a pesky 67-57 win over also-ran University of Santo Tomas, are out to boost their playoff bonus bid while the Green Archers attempt to ride on an 82-80 win over UP to maintain a safe spot inside the Final Four picture.

DLSU just last week was on the brink of elimination with a 3-6 card before stringing two clutch wins against Adamson University and UP to stay in hunt for a playoff spot along with three other teams in the packed middle standings.

“We have not achieved anything yet. We’re not there yet. The job is not done. It’s not gonna be a walk in the park. We just gotta do a good job against NU. We just gotta prepare. We gotta brace and stay grounded,” said De La Salle mentor Derrick Pumaren.

NU anticipates a similar tough outing from here on after ending a seven-year Final Four drought.

“We have to be ready against De La Salle. We have to be ready in our last two games of the second round,” said coach Jeff Napa.

De La Salle is hoping to get a lift in the vital match from MVP frontrunner Schonny Winston (calf), who is likely to return after four games as another absence will make him ineligible for the award due to 70-percent threshold of required number of games played. — John Bryan Ulanday

Cignal HD Spikers secure the last ticket to the semis

CIGNAL HD SPIKERS — PVL

Cignal delivered a knockout blow on Choco Mucho and essayed a 17-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14 victory yesterday to seize the last ticket to the semifinals bus in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

Tai Bierria rebounded from a sputtering opening set performance and took charge late for a match-best 18-point effort in leading the HD Spikers to the semis with a 5-3 record.

There, Cignal joined Creamline, Chery Tiggo and Petro Gazz.

The semifinals, set at the PhilSports Arena tomorrow and Tuesday and Sta. Rosa Sports Complex Saturday, will implement a single-round robin format with the top two advancing to the best-of-three finale unfurling Dec. 1 back at the PhilSports Arena or a bigger venue.

Now the Shaq delos Santos-mentored squad will have a chance to eclipse, if not replicate, its pair of third-place finish in the Open and Invitational Conferences this season.

Needing just to win two sets to advance, Cignal did that and more as it fought off a big challenge by Choco Mucho in the second set and then dominated the next two in sealing the former’s place in the next phase.

But it was over when the HD Spikers took the third set that the power-hitting Ms. Bierria dominated.

Ces Molina, who dyed her hair blond, likewise delivered a clutch effort with 13 hits, including 12 off attacks.

It was painful ending for the Flying Titans, who were in contention after going 3-3 a week ago.

But they ran into misfortunes after reinforcement Odina Aliyeva was scratched out in a 15-25, 25-20, 25-20, 28-26 loss to the Cool Smashers, their sister team, Thursday at the MOA Arena due to health reasons.

Ms. Aliyeva returned to action on this one but she wasn’t in full strength and was just shadow of her old lethal self and wound up with just eight points.

It didn’t help that Kat Tolentino hurt her knee and Des Cheng jammed a finger during the game and were forced to sit out and watched helplessly from the bench as the whole team just completely unraveled.

Add all these and it was just catastrophic for Choco Mucho, which closed its campaign with a 3-5 card. — Joey Villar

Diaz-Naranjo eyes gold, member of IWF Athletes’ Commission in Bogota

TOKYO Olympics gold winner Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo will try to kill two birds with one stone in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships set Dec. 5 to 16 in Bogota, Colombia where she hopes to strike gold and get elected as an Asian member of the IWF Athletes’ Commission.

Ms. Diaz-Naranjo was one of the three nominated to run for a spot in the powerful commission with the other two being Iran’s Behad Salimikordasiabi and Qatar’s Fares Ibrahim Elbakh, who are also Olympic champions like the former.

Ms. Diaz-Naranjo will spearhead the country’s campaign in the 12-day meet alongside Asian and Southeast Asian champion Vanessa Sarno, who is being tipped as the heiress to the former’s throne.

Also seeing action are Tokyo Olympian Elreen Ando, Kristel Macrohon, Rosegie Ramos, Lovely Inan, Nestor Colonia, John Ceniza and John Pacaldo.

It will be the first competition for Ms. Diaz-Naranjo after her golden performance in last May’s Hanoi SEA Games.

Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella said the Bogota tilt would be the first of several tournaments where 2024 Paris Olympic qualifying points are at stake.

Mmess. Diaz-Naranjo and Ando went through the same qualifying cycle last time and made it to the Tokyo Games where the former ended up delivering the country a historic Olympic mint.

And Ms. Diaz-Naranjo will be hoping to have a flying start on her way to Paris. — Joey Villar

Bay Area target top 2 and twice-to-beat edge in playoffs

Games Wednesday
(PhilSports Arena)
3 p.m. — Bay Area vs TNT
5:45 p.m. — Terrafirma vs San Miguel

BAY Area is out to secure a coveted Top 2 seeding and twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs while TNT, with a new import in tow, is fighting for dear life.

With clear intentions, the pacesetting Dragons (9-2) and the ninth-running Tropang Giga (4-6) tangle in a crucial PBA Commissioner’s Cup tussle today at the PhilSports Arena.

“It’s an important game for them and an important game for us,” Bay Area coach Brian Goorjian said of the 3 p.m. encounter.

Also hitting the court with the same urgency and strong motivation is seventh-running San Miguel Beer (SMB) (4-5), which like TNT, is making a final push for the quarters. The Beermen gun for a pivotal fifth win in the 5:45 p.m. mainer versus Terrafirma (1-9).

The Dyip climbed out of a horrendous 25-game skid via a 124-114 overtime victory over NLEX last Friday and are now in a rare position to go back-to-back.

Mr. Goorjian braces for war versus the must-win Tropang Giga, especially with Chot Reyes at their helm.

“I go a long way with coach. I came here in the 1990s and played his team and they totally dominated us. We’ve forged a good relationship and I’m looking forward to reacquainting. He’s a man I respect and I like and I know his team’s going to be tough and prepared,” the Australian tactician said.

The Tropang Giga showed their toughness in pushing Barangay Ginebra to the limit while playing all-Filipino before yielding, 89-85, last Sunday.

TNT has since signed up European leagues veteran Matt Mobley after Cameron Oliver went down with knee sprain and sat out the Ginebra game.

“We expect Matt to be our creator and inject energy in our offense,” team manager Jojo Lastimosa said of the 6-foot-4 Mr. Mobley. “He’s not a big guy who can dominate inside but we are hoping he can make our team faster.”

The Tropang Giga also hope veteran playmaker Jayson Castro recovers fast after limping out of the Ginebra match with an ankle sprain in the third quarter.

Mr. Lastimosa said Mr. Castro is listed as “day-to-day.”

“It’s not as severe as we have anticipated but it’s still sore,” he said.

If successful in bringing down the Dragons, TNT climbs back into the Magic 8 and carries a big momentum going to its final elims assignment versus SMB on Saturday. — Olmin Leyba

Diamante, Obebe named Most Outstanding Swimmers in COPA national finals

NICOLE Diamante and Pauline Obebe captured the Most Outstanding Swimmers (MOS) citations after taking home four gold medals apiece at the close of the Congress of Philippine Aquatics, Inc. (COPA) Reunion Challenge National Finals at the Teofilo Yldefonso swimming pool inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) over the weekend.

Already ahead of the pack with three gold medals each, the 11-year-old Ms. Diamante of RSS Dolphins Swim Team ruled the girls’ individual medley in time of 3:09.99 while Aquanights swim club’s Ms. Obebe won the same event in the girls’ 12-year-old class by clocking 2:51.27 for a strong finishing kick.

Mmess. Diamante and Obebe also stamped their class in the three-leg Reunion Series, setting the stage to become the most bemedaled tankers in the national finale presented by the Manlalangoy ng Pilipinas and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) under Chairman Noli Eala, Speedo and Milo

“We’re very thankful to all swimmers and to all club’s managers who have joined our tournament. We assured everyone, even non-COPA teams can easily play the coming COPA tournament next month,” said COPA Secretary General and tournament director Chito Rivera, who was joined by former national coach Richard Luna in the awarding ceremony.

Both Mmess. Diamante and Obebe will try to carry on the momentum to Vigan, Ilocos Sur as members of the stacked National Capital Region swim team for the much-awaited return of Batang Pinoy national finals on Dec. 17-22.

Meanwhile, other COPA winners in the four-today swim joust were Danna Santiago (girls Class C 200M), Kisses Libat (girls 11 Class B 100m back), Victoria Vitog and Jhoey Gallaro in 14-year Class B, and Xian Espinas and Anjolie Novillas in Class C. — John Bryan Ulanday

National Dragonboat Open slated at the Club Balai Isabel this weekend

SLOTS to the national pool will be up for grabs as the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation stages the National Dragonboat Open this weekend at the Club Balai Isabel fronting the scenic Taal Lake in Talisay, Batangas.

The two-day race, however, will be supervised by Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino in selecting members of the national team seeing action in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games set in May next year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

PCKDF President Teresita Uy thanked the Tagaytay City Mayor and PhilCycling chief for organizing and Talisay Mayor Nestor Natanauan and Club Balai Isabel CEO and President Nelson Terrible for backing the important meet.

Divisions to be competed at are Under-23 500-meter (3-crew), mixed U23 250m, 500m and 800m (12-crew), men’s open (12-crew) in 250m, 500m and 800m, U23 (12-crew) in 250m, 500m and 800m and U23 (5-crew) 250m, 500m and 800m.

Organizers have allotted Friday as team practice sessions for participants before they plunge into action in the competition proper the next two days.

Mr. Tolentino has waived the entry to allow more participants to register.

Traditional boat race will make a much-awaited return in the biennial meet’s sports calendar after a seven-year absence.

The last time there was dragonboat in the SEA Games was in Singapore where the country wound up with just a bronze medal in the women’s 200m (6-crew).

The sport, along with canoe-kayak and rowing, will be held in Kampot, one of the four Cambodian cities co-hosting the SEA Games.

Aaron Judge

Last week, owner Hal Steinbrenner held a one-on-one meeting with Aaron Judge to underscore the Yankees’ commitment to bring back the newly minted American League Most Valuable Player awardee to the fold. “I do believe [the star center fielder] wants to be a Yankee. I think we’ve got a good thing going here,” he said. As far as he’s concerned, there should be no restraint in talks with the free agent, not even other pressing commitments. “We know where we’re at, and I can tell you that that’s not going to stop us.”

For the Yankees, the good news is that Judge clearly wants to keep wearing pinstripes. And he has cause to do so; after all, his seventh year in the Bronx yielded a record-breaking season that highlighted his favorable position as the presumptive captain of the franchise. The bad news is that he could have been inked to a contract extension prior to the 2022 campaign had he been slated to receive the same blank check now being promised.

True, the Yankees’ proposal of $213 million through seven years ending 2029 was nothing to scoff at. Judge could have signed then. Instead, he declined the option and figured that he would produce monster numbers to justify suitors’ frenzied jockeying for position. That he went on to shatter the single-season home run benchmark in the AL, hitherto held by fellow Bomber for 61 years, affirmed the gamble he took. He bet on himself, and is now poised to reap the dividends.

Considering the humility with which Judge has approached the game, there is every reason to believe that his first choice is to stay with the Yankees. That said, he fought for, and earned, the right to maximize the possibilities. Certainly, it’s why he went through the wringer and rejected the path of least resistance. Which, notwithstanding Steinbrenner’s deep pockets, could spell disaster. And unless and until he affixes his Hancock on a new contract, it’s anybody’s guess on what the future holds.

Palace orders DENR to ensure small-miner safety net coverage

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to more closely regulate smaller miners to ensure their safety practices are compliant with regulations, and that their workers are adequately covered in terms of social protections.

Mr. Marcos issued the instructions in a meeting with DENR officials in Malacañang, the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) said in a statement.

“We want to legalize small-scale mining firms because many of them are illegal, therefore the miners do not have protections,” he said. “We want to strengthen the regulatory framework so that they can legally operate and we can give our miners assistance and protection.”

“They might be able to access financing (and) social protections” if brought within the regulator’s purview, he added.

The OPS said the President may certify some bills on small-scale mining, including amendments to Republic Act (RA) No. 7076, to offer incentives to the industry and “to provide social assistance and labor protection as well as government assistance programs.”

Under RA 7076, the small-scale mining category refers to mines that rely heavily on manual labor, without the use of explosives or heavy equipment.

“I think for now the need is for the regulatory capabilities, especially over small scale (miners),” the President told the DENR officials.

Finance Secretary Benjamin E. Diokno earlier said the mining industry can support the Philippines’ long-term expansion.

Separately, Mr. Marcos cited the need to upskill and reskill seafarers in preparation for the expected shift of ocean-going vessels to green hydrogen between 2030 and 2040.

The President said Filipino seafarers would need additional training in handling alternative fuels.

At the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), leading shipping organizations and major producers of green hydrogen signed a joint statement committing to the rapid production and use of low-carbon fuels based on green hydrogen to accelerate the decarbonization of global shipping.

Marcos dismisses as ‘fake news’ report Diokno on way out at DoF

PHILIPPINE STAR/KRIZ JOHN ROSALES

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. dismissed as “fake news” reports that Finance Secretary Benjamin E. Diokno will exit the Department of Finance (DoF).

“Fake news. I don’t know where it comes from,” Mr. Marcos told reporters when asked about Mr. Diokno’s status.

A website reported on Monday that Mr. Marcos is looking to replace Mr. Diokno and named as a possible replacement Albay Rep. Jose Ma. Clemente S. Salceda, who chairs the House ways and means committee.

“Why would I do that? We’ve assembled a great team,” Mr. Marcos said. “We’re trying to go down a certain direction. It’s the wrong — it’s very, very poor time to… change horses in midstream.”

Earlier in the day, Mr. Diokno described his relations with the President as “very good.”

“I don’t know where this is coming from. I’m old enough in this game to even bother about this. I just work nonstop,” he told reporters.

He said he has spoken with Mr. Salceda about the matter.

Mr. Salceda, an economist, has also rejected speculation that he is in line for the DoF.

Mr. Salceda said on Monday that he didn’t “start this DoF news flow.”

“In past administrations, as in the present, I was able to move fiscal policy from my seat in Congress,” he said in a statement. — Kyle Aristophere T. Atienza

Selective buying behavior noted in PHL FMCG segment as inflation bites

JCOMP-FREEPIK

THE fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market has been marked by more selective purchasing behavior because of inflation, according to data and analytics firm Kantar.

Laurice Padlan-Obana, Kantar Philippines Worldpanel Division shopper insight director, said in a virtual media briefing on Tuesday that value is becoming more of a consideration for buyers.

“While value can be as straightforward as cheaper goods or paying less for the same quantity, other factors such as the increase in gas prices, traffic and uncomfortable modes of transportation have redefined value in more encompassing terms when it comes to shopping,” Ms. Padlan-Obana said.

“What we have seen is that, in general for packaged goods, shoppers are coping with rising prices by being more open to value brands. To some extent, however, they also take into consideration where to shop. Nowadays, with multiple retailers and channel options within reach, shoppers can easily adapt to what would best fit their budgets and lifestyle that will address their needs at the moment,” she added.

Inflation surged to 7.7% in October, driven by higher food costs.

Ms. Padlan-Obana said 41% of FMCG purchases in 2022 were accounted for by neighborhood stores, known as sari-sari stores.

“There is a bit of pressure on hypermarkets and supermarkets as most Filipinos who are feeling the economic strain are buying their basic FMCG needs in smaller proximity stores. Meanwhile, a 6% value share decline in hypermarkets and supermarkets was noted from 34% in 2020 to 28% in 2022,” Ms. Padlan-Obana said.

Ms. Padlan-Obana added that Filipino shoppers are also growing more conscious of convenience and availability.

“Value delivery in forms of rewards, lower prices or promotions is a given. Convenience or the ease of access and availability of options are also important factors that shoppers now consider,” Kantar said.

Kantar said the top 10 most chosen retailers in 2022 were Puregold, SM Supermarket, Mercury Drug, Robinsons Supermarket, CSI Supermarket, Prince Hypermart, Alfamart, Gaisano, LCC Supermarket, and 7-Eleven.

The list was compiled based on a study of where shoppers made purchases within the past 12 months.

“The more a retailer is able to check most if not all the boxes that Filipino shoppers consider when purchasing their FMCG needs, the more retailers become the shopper’s choice. When retailers are able to understand and address those needs, shoppers will keep coming back,” Ms. Padlan-Obana said. — Revin Mikhael D. Ochave

Cebu health info project worth P143.4M approved for registration by BoI

PETR MACHACEK-UNSPLASH

THE Board of Investments (BoI) has approved a new contact center project involving an investment of P143.4 million in Cebu City, which will focus on healthcare information management services (HIMS).

In a statement on Tuesday, the BoI said that it has approved the registration of Optum Global Solutions (Philippines), Inc.’s contact center project, which is expected to create 350 full-time direct and indirect jobs. Workers will be allowed to work from home.

According to the BoI, the project will provide coding, testing, and maintenance services, as well as help-desk troubleshooting support.

The project will also offer call center services, back-office operations as well as transaction processing, clinical process services, analytics services, trending and reporting.

“The approval of this project in Cebu City proves that we are persistent in our efforts to enhance the growth of the country’s information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry, particularly in the HIMS sector,” Trade Undersecretary and BoI Managing Head Ceferino S. Rodolfo said.

Optum Global has seven projects registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority in Taguig City, Quezon City, Cebu City, and Muntinlupa City.

The company mainly supports a group company, Optum Technology, LLC, a US unit of UnitedHealth Group, Inc.

“We are further advancing the IT-BPM industry, and this is just the beginning of more investments being injected into the economy. We are on track to making more investment opportunities happen in the Philippines,” he added.

The BoI said that the proposed project is also expected to help create jobs in Cebu City, where the poverty rate was 26.9% in 2021.

“Maximizing the country’s valuable resources, the company picked the Philippines as the site for its new project because of the Filipino workforce that is recognized as competitive with high technical skills and a level of English proficiency,” the BoI said.

“As of 2021, the HIMS industry accounted for (around $3.1 billion in revenue), providing jobs to over 200,000 Filipinos. The persisting pandemic did not hamper the positive outlook for the HIMS industry, as revenue is projected to grow by 7.3% to 10%,” it added. — Revin Mikhael D. Ochave
