Herndon basks in winning a PBA title with Magnolia

ALWAYS WANTED to play for the Magnolia franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association, forward Robbie Herndon shared that to win a title with the team makes it all the more special.
Acquired on Draft Day in 2017 by then the Star Hotshots from GlobalPort Batang Pier, Mr. Herndon, who played collegiate ball in the United States with San Francisco State, said to be part of the team he has admired was something he was happy and excited to have seen realized.
That special affinity with the Hotshots was further enhanced recently after the rookie player helped the franchise get back to the PBA summit, winning the season-ending tournament Governors’ Cup by defeating the Alaska Aces in six games in the finals.
It marked the end of a four-year title drought for the storied franchise in the local professional league.
The last time the franchise was in 2014 when they won the same conference to complete a grand slam year for the team, which was playing under San Mig Coffee then.
The significance of the title conquest was not lost to Mr. Herndon, who was a key cog for head coach Chito Victolero and the Hotshots in their title run.
“It’s an incredible feeling. I got a special group of guys on this team, and that’s what makes it even more special. Winning a championship is great, but winning that with a group of guys that all get along just like a family makes it feel even better,” said Mr. Herndon.
“I am blessed to be with a team that’s already ready to go and ready to win a championship. As a rookie, I just wanna focus on fitting in with the system, and I feel I did a great job with that. It’s just the rookie season, but I’m already a champion. So what else can I ask for?” he added.
MAGNOLIA SYSTEM
Moving forward, Mr. Herndon said he is looking forward to achieving more success with Magnolia and playing under the system of Mr. Victolero, which he thinks fits him well.
“It (Magnolia system) works, obviously. We win. It’s a defensive system. The offense is free-flowing, but it’s mostly defense. I like our system. As long as we’re winning, there’s nothing wrong with it,” Mr. Herndon said.
With one year of PBA experience under his belt, Mr. Herndon said he is more than willing to share what he had learn in year one to incoming Magnolia players, notably Michael Calisaan of San Sebastian College, who the Hotshots ninth in the 2018 PBA Rookie Draft.
“I was given a lot of help with the veterans when I first came in. I’d try to do the same for him — trying to teach him what to do. If he needs help. I’m excited to meet him. He’s joining a really good team,” Mr. Herndon said.
Prior to entering the Philippine Basketball Association, Mr. Herndon made a name for himself by ruling the Red Bull King of the Rock Philippine qualifier, beating PBA legend Willie Miller in the finals.
He then played at the Philippine Basketball AssociationDevelopmental League with the Marinerong Pilipino Skippers.
At the PBA Rookie Draft, Mr. Herndon was selected sixth overall by GlobalPort before his rights, along with another pick Andreas Cahilig (24th), was sent to the Hotshots for rookies Lervin Flores (9th), Joseph Gabayni (14th) and Julian Sargent (16th) in a multi-player deal. — Michael Angelo S. James receives favorable news on his injured groin

LEBRON JAMES is listed as day-to-day with his strained left groin after the results of his MRI exam came back clean, the Los Angeles Lakers announced on Wednesday.
James isn’t expecting to miss much time based on his tweet shortly after news broke. The Los Angeles Lakers star used an emoji to display his thanks.
“Dodged a bullet! Sheesh. (Thanks) to the almighty above! #BackInNoTime,” James tweeted.
The Lakers reportedly expect James to miss at least a few games, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
Los Angeles faces the Kings in Sacramento on Thursday night before starting a four-game homestand against the Clippers the following night.
The veteran forward was injured Tuesday in LA’s upset 127-101 win over the Golden State Warriors as he dribbled toward the basket and slipped. His right leg swung underneath him as he lost his footing, putting pressure on his left leg and groin as he reached forward to try to maintain possession of the ball.
James walked gingerly off the court and video showed him wincing near the bench and telling trainers “I felt a pop” regarding the injury.
“I don’t know (if I’m going to miss a game),” James said, per Yahoo’s report and prior to undergoing the exam. “We”re going to see what the MRI says, see how I feel the rest of the day today. I’m going to be around-the-clock tomorrow rehabbing and we’ll see how I feel on Thursday when we go to Sac.”
Lakers coach Luke Walton said the team wouldn’t rush James back.
“Obviously, we want him back soon as possible,” said Walton. “But we also will be very cautious when we bring him back.”
The 33-year-old is averaging 27.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists per game in his first season with the Lakers. He has appeared in all 34 games this season and did not miss a game last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. — Reuters

Schumacher in F1’s thoughts as stricken great turns 50

LONDON — Michael Schumacher is in Formula One’s thoughts as the seven-time world champion approaches his 50th birthday, five years on from the near-fatal skiing accident that has left the Ferrari great fighting brain injuries behind a wall of secrecy.
The German, still the sport’s most successful driver in terms of wins (91) and titles, will reach his half century on Jan. 3.
Formula One’s focus will be on highlighting the remarkable career and talents of a man whose fame stretched well beyond the racetrack, and who enthused a legion of fans in the 1990s and early years of this century.
The Ferrari museum in Maranello, Italy, is planning a special exhibition, opening on his birthday and lasting for a few months, “both as a celebration and a mark of gratitude to the most successful Prancing Horse driver ever.”
Mercedes, the last team Schumacher drove for in Formula One before retirement in 2012, will have some of his cars on display at their museum in Stuttgart.
Formula One management will also dedicate a week to Schumacher on its social media platforms, including exclusive interviews with many of those who were part of the German’s Formula One story.
“We are going to celebrate Michael’s birthday,” said a spokesman.
Schumacher remains a big part of the sport’s narrative, with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton now a five-time world champion with 73 wins and getting ever closer to the German’s greatest records.
Hanging over it all, however, will be a strong sense of sadness — just as every anniversary since his Dec. 29, 2013 fall while skiing off piste near Meribel in the French Alps with his family.
Schumacher hit his head on a rock and spent months in an artificial coma after being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
“We think a lot about him,” Mercedes motorsport head Toto Wolff told Reuters. “He was an exceptional sportsman, and he’s missed.
“As a seven-time world champion he’s missed within the paddock, he’s missed as a consultant to us, somebody we’ve been looking up to. We hope that his recovery continues to be positive and that’s the most important thing.”
CONSIDERABLE CONJECTURE
Just how positive, or otherwise, is a matter of considerable conjecture and one met with resolute silence from his wife Corinna, the family and those who always formed part of Schumacher’s innermost circle.
They would prefer the world remembered Schumacher as the champion he was, rather than the different kind of fighter he has become.
Sabine Kehm, Schumacher’s trusted assistant and spokeswoman who now also manages the racing career of his son Mick, continues to guard his privacy with polite but firm determination.
“In general the media have never reported on Michael and Corinna’s private life,” she said in 2016. “When he was in Switzerland, for example, it was clear he was a private individual.
“Once in a long discussion Michael said to me, ‘You don’t need to call me for the next year, I’m disappearing.’ I think it was his secret dream to be able to do that some day. That’s why now I still want to protect his wishes in that I don’t let anything get out.”
It is clear that if Schumacher were to have made a miraculous recovery, the good news would have been known quickly enough. The fact nothing has been said, in itself speaks volumes.
Amid enduring media speculation, be it rumored moves for treatment elsewhere or concerning Schumacher’s general mobility, any shred of bona fide information from behind the walls of the family’s lakeside Swiss mansion is news.
One such snippet was provided by Swiss archbishop Georg Ganswein, who told the mass-circulation German magazine Bunte recently about a 2016 visit to Schumacher.
“I sat opposite him, held his hands and looked at him. His face is just as we know it, the typical Michael Schumacher face. Only a bit fuller,” he said.
“He feels that loving people are around him and care for him and, thank God, keep the all too curious public away. A man who is sick needs discretion and understanding.”
Jean Todt, Schumacher’s former Ferrari boss who is now president of Formula One’s governing body, is a frequent visitor.
He revealed last month that he had watched this year’s Brazilian Grand Prix with Schumacher.
“There are pictures of him all over my offices and apartments. The time with Michael will always be remembered as the best of my life,” the Frenchman told reporters. — Reuters

Light heavyweight, women’s featherweight title fights close out year for UFC

THE ULTIMATE Fighting Championship closes out an eventful year with a slam-bang two title fight-headlined event this weekend in California.
Dubbed “UFC 232,” the match on Sunday, Dec. 30 (Manila time) at The Forum in Inglewood will see the rematch between former light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones and Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson in the main event for the undisputed light heavyweight title with the women’s featherweight title clash of reigning champion Cris Cyborg against challenger Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes serving as co-main event.
Also part of the main card are the welterweight battle of Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit against Michael “Maverick” Chiesa, light heavyweight Ilir Latifi against Corey Anderson, and featherweight Chad Mendes versus Alexander Volkanovski.
In the preliminaries will see fighters like heavyweight Andrei Arlovski, women’s featherweight Cat Zingano, lightweight B.J. Penn and middleweight Uriah Hall in action.
Stacked as it is as a year-ending offering, Mike Miguel of RealFight PH (http://www.realfight.ph/) said fans should stay tuned and brace for an action-packed UFC 232 affair.
“Definitely it’s an action-packed card from start to finish. Aside from the two title fights, you’ve got top contenders in Carlos Condit and Chad Mendes taking on marquee contenders Michael Chiesa and Alex Volkanovski, respectively, in the main card. While the likes of Uriah Hall, BJ Penn and the ever-dangerous Petr Yan will kick off the preliminaries,” said Mr. Miguel when sought by BusinessWorld for his take on UFC 232.
The combat sports writer and observer went on to say that the main fights at UFC 232 should deliver the goods commensurate to their high-profile billing.
“I’m excited to see how both title fights would go down. First, with all that has happened surrounding Jon Jones, we can expect him to be extra motivated to do everything to reclaim the title and put everything behind him with a repeat over Gustafsson. Meanwhile, the The Mauler is ever more determined to get even with the former champion and win his first UFC belt,” said Mr. Miguel, referring briefly to the drug-testing issue involving Mr. Jones early this month that prompted the relocation of the contest from Las Vegas to Inglewood.
“Cyborg vs. Nunes gives the fans the women’s superfight they wanted since Cyborg’s fight with Ronda Rousey didn’t push through in the past. With her dominant reign, Nunes may have one of the best chances to hand Cyborg her first Octagon loss but at the same time, the champion shows new tricks every time she steps in for another challenge,” he added.
Mr. Miguel admitted that calling the fight is going to be tough, seeing how open they can be. But he nonetheless is giving Mr. Jones and Cyborg the nod.
“We can see this (Jones vs. Gustafsson) fight to be like their first — an instant classic. If Gustafsson can push Jones like he did in their previous fight, he has a good chance to get the win. But Jones also can pull off some surprises of his own. Jones finishes things in the latter rounds. Cyborg might outwork Nunes who has some issues with her cardio before teeing her off. I see her winning by late-round stoppage as well,” Mr. Miguel said.

Klopp plays down six-point lead for title-chasing Reds

LIVERPOOL’S six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table “means nothing” at the halfway stage of the season ahead of tough tests against Arsenal and defending champion Manchester City in the next week, manager Juergen Klopp said.
Liverpool thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 at Anfield on Wednesday to move on to 51 points from 19 games as the Merseysiders extended their advantage over the chasing pack with an eighth consecutive league victory.
Early pacesetter City lost, 2-1, at Leicester to fall seven points adrift following a third defeat in four matches, leaving Klopp’s side in a strong position to claim a first title since 1990. However, the German was quick to dismiss the advantage.
“That means nothing… we play Arsenal and City,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “Good that we have six points more than other teams but that is what we wanted to do all the time, create a basis for the rest of the season. Now the first part is over.”
Liverpool has made its best start to a season having extended its unbeaten run to 19 matches, but Klopp said his squad should not get carried away, with an in-form Spurs side now its closest challenger after City’s recent slump.
“We want to create our own history so the first time in the Premier League unbeaten, we conceded seven goals, that is good. Numbers good, good situation, but 19 games to go,” added Klopp, whose side hosts Arsenal on Saturday and visit City on Jan. 3. — Reuters

Blip on the radar

It was supposed to be a perfect scenario for the Warriors to stamp their class: A Christmas Day match on national television and in front of the home crowd, with LeBron James as an opponent. And they were complete, too. Everybody was healthy, offensive fulcrum Steph Curry just had an outstanding shooting game to continue a hot streak, and Kevin Durant and Draymond Green appeared to be getting along well anew. In short, yet another triumph over the reeling Lakers looked to be in the offing.
To be sure, the Warriors were extremely motivated heading into the contest. Public pronouncements had them acknowledging its significance, indicating their awareness of its capacity to galvanize a campaign that had been rocked early by injuries and internal tumult. And the Lakers were, well, the Lakers; there could be no denying the appeal of upending the purple and gold, crosstown rivals with star power off the court regardless of status on it. The fact that James was around and leading a resurgence made the prospect of victory even sweeter.
Unfortunately, the Warriors found the flesh weak despite the spirit’s willingness. They fell behind early and practically spent the rest of the set-to staring at the Lakers’ backsides. Not even James’s departure early in the third quarter could steer momentum their way. After a brief rally that had them just two down near the end of the period, they again had shots missing the mark. And in bowing to the handicapped opposition, they might as well have been made up of fringe players instead of All-Stars.
Don’t tell the Warriors the development means anything more than a blip on the radar, though. For all the messages the blowout sends pundits, they remain confident of their capacity to defend their title. As far as they’re concerned, no one else in the league can take their measure at their best. And, yes, all and sundry can rest assured they will be at their best when the stakes are high. Curry and Durant will make beautiful music together, Green and Kay Thompson will find their shots, and the rest of the roster will ably fill in the gaps. Meanwhile, they’re forced to acknowledge that the questions will keep coming, some even from within.

Peso surges against dollar ahead of year’s close

THE PESO climbed against the dollar on Thursday as banks continued to build their peso holdings ahead of another long holiday break.
The local unit closed Thursday’s session at P52.665 versus the greenback, 19.5 centavos stronger than the P52.86 finish last Friday.
The peso opened the session weaker at P52.90 versus the greenback. It dropped to as low as P53 yesterday before rallying to close at its high. Dollars traded yesterday rose to $807.45 million from the $726.55 million that switched hands last Friday.
A trader said the peso strengthened as the market positioned ahead of the year’s close.
“The peso opened quite high, but it quickly dropped to the P52.70 level before 10:30 a.m.,” the trader said.“We have four days of weekend, so the market is covering for remittance flows coming in over the long weekend.”
Meanwhile, another trader said the peso “found some risk-off boost” from positive developments in US-China trade relations.
Officials from Washington are reported to travel to Beijing in early January to discuss trade-related concerns to the Chinese government, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
During the meeting of US President Donald J. Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last month in Argentina, the leaders agreed to take a pause in imposing tariffs against each other’s goods, with the US postponing its levies on Chinese imports until March 2.
The trader said the local currency also gained strength after the US economic managers assured investors that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will remain in his post following rumors of his possible removal.
For today, the first trader expects the peso to trade between P52.40 and P52.80 versus the dollar, while the other gave a slimmer range of P52.50-P52.70. — K.A.N. Vidal

PSEi rebounds as Wall Street rallies after break

By Arra B. Francia, Reporter
LOCAL EQUITIES recovered on Thursday amid a stellar performance from Wall Street overnight.
The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) bounced back 0.43% or 32.65 points to close at 7,482.66, restoring hopes the index may end the year above the 7,500 mark. The broader all-shares index also gained 0.53% or 24.21 points to finish at 4,514.13.
“Our index trailed the bounce that happened in the US markets last night. The news about trade talks between China and the US that is set to take place on Jan. 7. may have influenced the rally in the western markets as well as in PSEi,” Timson Securities, Inc. Equities trader Jervin S. de Celis said in a mobile phone message on Thursday.
Wall Street indices rallied to their best finish in almost a decade overnight after staging its worst Christmas eve finish in the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 4.98% or 1,086.25 points to 22,878.45. The S&P 500 index jumped 4.96% or 116.60 points to 2,467.70, while the Nasdaq Composite index firmed up 5.84% or 361.44 points to close at 6,554.36.
P2P Trade Online Sales Associate Gabriel Jose F. Perez noted that the PSEi’s performance was flat compared to US markets, which could indicate that investors are still waiting on the sidelines.
“Participants could still be on a wait and see mode to see if the rally [on Wednesday] will be sustainable,” Mr. Perez said in an e-mail.
Meanwhile, Southeast Asian shares rose on Thursday, tracking a dramatic rebound on Wall Street powered by upbeat US holiday sales data and the Trump administration’s efforts to boost investor confidence.
Back home, four sectoral indices advanced. Industrials jumped 1.06% or 116.39 points to 11,028.13; mining and oil gained 0.7% or 57.93 points to 8,234.54; holding firms rose 0.7% or 51.48 points to 7,368.34; while financials climbed 0.66% or 11.61 points to 1,767.52.
In contrast, services dropped 0.2% or 2.98 points to 1,435.46, while property slipped 0.06% or 2.39 points to 3,627.48.
Some 1.65 billion issues valued at P5.16 billion switched hands, higher than the previous session’s P3.39-billion turnover.
Advancers outpaced decliners, 113 to 82, while 40 names were unchanged.
Foreign investors remained in selling mode, although net sales fell to P328.3 million from Wednesday’s P766.43 million.
Thirteen of the 20 most actively traded stocks registered gains, including D&L Industries, Inc. (up 2.67%), BDO Unibank, Inc. (up 2.13%), and Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. (up 1.92%). Five stocks went down, including Ayala Land, Inc. (down 1.58%) and Ayala Corp. (down 0.66%). The other two ended flat.
“We still have one trading day left and I still expect the market to close a bit higher than 7,500 [on Friday] on a possible window dressing activity,” Timson Securities’ Mr. De Celis said.

Road Board abolition remains in question

SENATE MAJORITY Leader Juan Miguel F. Zubiri appealed to Minority Leader Franklin M. Drilon to consider reconvening the Bicameral Conference Committee for the Road Board abolition bill.
“I hope our good Minority Floor Leader would hear me out on this and I will call for an all-member caucus on Jan. 14 to discuss the proposal,” Mr. Zubiri told reporters over phone message, Thursday.
He explained that Senate had initially planned to convene the bicam committee, considering that the Senate version contained stricter provisions.
The chamber, however, was prompted to adopt House Bill No. 7436 upon learning that the House of Representatives was inclined to rescind the bill.
“We adopted the House version as a strategy to quickly approve the measure when we got wind of the plan of the House that they were not interested anymore in abolishing the corruption-riddled agency,” Mr. Zubiri said.
Mr. Drilon said in an earlier statement that there’s no basis in convening the committee, explaining that since the House version was adopted by the Senate, there are no disagreeing provisions that need to be reconciled.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Danilo E. Suarez of the 3rd District of Quezon said the House still needs to settle the matter with the Senate, noting that Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has authority to recall the bill if it was not ratified before she assumed the speakership in July.
“Definitely, there must be an action on the part of the House, we have marching orders from Speaker (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) to recall it. We don’t want a head-on collision between the House and the Senate on this issue… It’s a question of timing,” Mr. Suarez said in a press briefing on Thursday. — Charmaine A. Tadalan

Resumption of peace talks with communist groups still ‘possible’

LABOR Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III on Thursday said it is still “possible” to go back to the peace table with communist groups next year despite the administration’s shift towards localized talks.
“Anything is possible. The President’s commitment to our country is inclusive and lasting peace for our country. If it means resuming the peace negotiations, why not?,” Mr. Bello, who is also the government’s peace panel chair, said in a press briefing at the Palace.
He also said that President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s rhetorics against the communist umbrella group National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) and its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), were “normal” given that country is still under a state of armed conflict against them.
“There is still no peace so banatan ‘yan (the battle is on). And if I were President, I would do everything to crush the rebellion,” he said.
Mr. Bello also confirmed the resignation of Francisco “Pancho” Lara Jr. As chief of the government peace panel’s ceasefire committee. Mr. Pancho reportedly stepped down from his position due to conflicts with the President’s demand on the peace negotiations.
“I saw a Facebook (post) on that… But I can confirm that although I’ve not talked to him yet. I confronted some of my members and asked them if the press release is accurate and a member of the panel confirmed that it is accurate,” he said. — Camille A. Aguinaldo

MMDA wants narrower, more EDSA lanes

THE METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has recommended to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) the narrowing down of lane width along EDSA to give way to an additional one as part of its traffic solution scheme.
“There was already a discussion with DPWH… The existing lanes will be narrowed to accommodate one more lane. So probably next year, if there will be a program and be included in the budget of DPWH,” EDSA Special Traffic and Transport Zone chief Edison Nebrija, speaking in mixed English and Filipino, said in a phone interview with BusinessWorld on Thursday, Dec. 27.
Mr. Nebrija noted that EDSA lanes are currently 3.4 meters wide, “which is standard and proportionate to the traffic scheme before.”
Nowadays, he noted, there is a much higher volume of vehicles using the main thoroughfare and the “traffic speed today is different from the traffic speed before.”
Highway lane width around the world vary from 2.5 meters to 3.7 meters. According to a study by World Resources Institute in 2016, cities with travel lane widths from 2.8 to 3.25 meters have the lowest crash fatality rates per 100,000 residents.
The MMDA official said the additional lane is eyed to be for private motor vehicles only.
“We cannot widen EDSA anymore. EDSA is EDSA as it is right now… The engineering intervention we can do is to add one more lane without widening the road. (But the) real solution for now without the engineering intervention is volume reduction,” he said. — Vince Angelo C. Ferreras

House summons construction firm owner, 10 DPWH officials

THE HOUSE of Representatives’ rules committee has issued subpoenas against the owner of C.T. Leoncio Construction and Trading and 10 regional officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways for its investigation on alleged irregularities in the budget allocation in Sorsogon. “We expect the attendance and full cooperation of these people in the House investigation. The House will not hesitate to issue arrest orders should those subpoenaed refuse to appear in our congressional hearings,” House Majority Leader Rolando G. Andaya of the 1st district of Camarines Sur said in a statement on Thursday. Among those who were summoned were sole proprietor Consolacion Leoncio of C.T. Leoncio, DPWH officials Engrs. Virgilio C. Eduarte, Danilo Verzola, Ignacio T. Odiaman, Wilfredo D. Flores, Larry B. Reyes, Merla Raveche, Jorge Gorimbao, Victor B. Azupardo, Gil Augustus A. Balmadrid, Noland Claro B. Guerrero. The Rules Committee also included Ms. Malou Lacuna, Mr. Renato de Vera, and Dr. Elenita Tan. The investigation, which will be held on Jan. 3, stemmed from the alleged parked funds in flood mitigating projects, amounting to P325 million, allocated to Casiguran. The Committee will also look into the multi-billion contracts entered into by the Department of Budget and Management with sole proprietor C. T. Leoncio. — Charmaine A. Tadalan
