The OK Bikol Association, Inc., and the regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Tourism, hold the annual Orgullo Kan Bikol-Gayon Bicol Trade and Tourism Fair at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall, from Oct. 8 to 11. Now on its 19th year, it is the longest-running regional trade and travel fair which brings to the fore the distinct products and tourist spots from the six provinces of Bicol. Among the products for sale are abaca products, furniture, home furnishings, cutlery, pottery, gold craft, fashion accessories, processed food and beverages, health and wellness concoctions, pili-based candies and delicacies, and a wide assortment of novelty items. Spicing up the four-day fair are performances by Bicolano artists and provincial cultural cultural groups. Avon Philippines’ Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer 2015 Walk and Run will be held on Oct. 10, with the run starting at 5 a.m. and the walk beginning at 6 a.m. It will be held at the SM Mall of Asia Open Grounds, Block 12. The event is open to the general public. It is part of Avon’s long-running crusade against breast cancer through its Kiss Goodbye to Breast Cancer (KGBC) campaign. Those who are not participating in the races can still come.
From Oct. 8 to 18, PELÍCULA-PELIKULA, the Spanish Film Festival, will be featuring the best of contemporary Spanish cinema at the Greenbelt 3 Cinemas. Presented by Instituto Cervantes, the Embassy of Spain-AECID, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and Intramuros Administration, the 2015 edition of the Spanish Film Festival will screen around 30 films. The Festival has traditionally been graced by the presence of foreign filmmakers. On Oct. 12, at 9:30 p.m., Spanish journalist Ramón Vilaró will present his film, De aliados a masacrados (2014), a documentary about how the Filipino-Spanish population of Manila was decimated during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during the Second World War. On Oct. 13, the Czech filmmaker Lenka Kny will present his comedy Milagro en Praga (2013), and followed by an open forum. The romantic comedy film is about two families, Mexican and Czech, who cross paths in Prague over the Christmas holidays. The films to be shown range from romance and comedy (Ocho apellidos vascos, Tres bodas de más, Gente en sitios) to documentary (Paco de Lucía, La plaga), suspense (Relatos salvajes) and drama (Hermosa juventud, Artico). The Festival will have a second leg in Intramuros, from Oct. 19 to 25, which will include an exhibit, Spanish Cinema in 20 Posters, at the NCCA Building where the film screenings will be held. A selection of films will travel to other cities in the Philippines, namely Baguio, Ilo-ilo, Zamboanga and Davao. Samsung Electronics Philippines and the Yuchengco Museum present a tribute exhibition to National Artist for Visual Arts Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera who is marking 50 years as an artist. The interactive exhibit, dubbed BenCab in Two Movements, is on view at the museum until Jan. 16. The exhibition highlights handpicked works he created to capture the dance movements of London-based Chinese dancer San Lee, and Polish dancer and choreographer Paulina Wycichowska. Through Samsung’s SUHD and UHD TV technologies, BenCab in Two Movements hopes to provide museum visitors immersive experiences at the same time curatorial information on shared art experiences between a painter and a dancer. Silverlens Galleries presents a solo exhibition of Renato Orara’s more recent incarnations from the series Ten Thousand Things That Breathe, begun in 1989. The series is a growing body of work comprised of drawings of objects that happen to be in the artist’s habitat or that he happens to encounter beyond his home. The University of Santo Tomas Singers, under the baton of its conductor Prof. Fidel Gener Calalang, Jr., will stage A Joyful Noise! A Thanksgiving Concert on Oct. 10, 8 p.m., at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The UST Singers recently arrived from their successful 28th International Concert Tour of Europe, where they performed in key cities in Germany and Italy. Highlighting this trip was their win at the 4th Florence International Choir Festival in Florence, Italy, where they were proclaimed the Grand Prize Winner, bagging a total of eight awards, including four First Prizes, the Best Male Soloist Award, and two special awards for Prof. Calalang. This concert will also serve as a send-off for the 32-member ensemble as they embark the next day on another concert tour of South Korea. Actor’s Actors, Inc. and The Necessary Theatre present The Normal Heart, the 2011 Tony Award Winner for Best Revival of a Play about the early days of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City.
