Ed Sheeran, BTS win big as MTV Europe Music Awards returns to live format

English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won best artist and best song for “Bad Habits”

BUDAPEST — English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won best artist and best song for “Bad Habits,” while K-pop stars BTS snatched four awards at MTV’s Europe Music Awards, which returned as an in-person event after a virtual 2020 edition due to the pandemic.

MTV said Sunday’s EMAs, hosted in Budapest, would go ahead to show solidarity with Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community following a June law banning the “display and promotion of homosexuality” among under-18s.

It said the 2021 EMAs, held at the Papp Laszlo Budapest Sport arena, would be “a global celebration of music for all audiences around the world.”

“I am so excited, I am very grateful to MTV. I think censorship of any kind of love sucks, and this is kind of a stand against that,” international pop star Kim Petras, the first transgender performer at the EMAs, said on the red carpet.

Some gay couples arriving at the show were kissing on the red carpet and others were dressed in rainbow-colored clothes in a show of support for LGBTQ+ people.

Lil Nas X was awarded best video for “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name),” while Korean band BTS won the most awards with four including best pop, best K-pop, best group, and biggest fans.

First-time EMA winners Måneskin took home best rock, while show host and performer Saweetie won best new artist.

Nicki Minaj earned a top award for best hip-hop, Olivia Rodrigo was awarded best push, Maluma won best Latin, and YUNGBLUD snagged the award for best alternative.

For the first time, the “MTV EMA Generation Change Award” winners were recognized during the EMAs main show, honoring five young people promoting equality while fighting against anti-LGBTQ+ policies.

Viktoria Radvanyi, a Hungarian board member of Budapest Pride, accepted the award on behalf of the winners.

ANXIETY
Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who faces a tough 2022 election, says the June law is aimed at protecting children. European Union (EU) leaders say it discriminates against gay and transgender people and goes against EU values.

The law has caused anxiety in the LGBT community under Orban’s government, which has stepped up its campaign against LGBT people ahead of next year’s ballot.

As Budapest prepared to host the EMAs, Mr. Orban was re-elected chairman of the ruling Fidesz party unopposed. The anti-LGBT line featured strongly on the agenda at his party congress, with several speakers pledging to protect what they see as Hungary’s traditional Christian values.

Mr. Orban’s opposition challenger, Peter Marki-Zay, an energetic political outsider, has said he would scrap the anti-LGBTQ law if elected. He has said same-sex couples should be allowed to marry and deserve equal rights.

The show derived inspiration from Budapest’s popular thermal spas and the Danube River, which runs through the capital, with stages that appeared to be floating.

Grammy award-winning Mr. Sheeran opened the night surrounded by neon graffiti to perform his latest single, “Overpass Graffiti.” Later he performed his chart-topping hit “Shivers.”

Imagine Dragons returned to the EMAs for the debut of their new single “Enemy.” Bathed in laser lights, the best-selling band rocked the stage alongside Grammy-nominated rapper and artist J.I.D and a squad of dancers.

Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and best alternative award winner YUNGBLUD closed the night with a pyrotechnics-filled performance of his latest single “fleabag.” — Reuters

SPC Power profit up 51% on higher power sales

SPC Power Corp.’s net income attributable to the parent equity holder climbed by 51% to P567.02 million in the third quarter of 2021 from P375.47 million in the same period last year.

This brought SPC’s nine-month attributable net income to P1.36 billion from P1.30 billion in the same period last year.

Its consolidated net income also grew by 5% to P1.38 billion in the January-September period from P1.31 billion a year earlier.

“Performance improvements were recorded across all business segments, driven mainly by higher revenues from the sale of electricity as well as higher availability and utilization of power generation capacities,” the company said in its regulatory filing on Monday.

As of September this year, the company’s power generation segment contributed about P426.8 million to its net income, 30.4% higher than the recorded P327.3 million in the same period last year.

The company said the increase was brough about by “higher utilization of available plant capacities.”

Meanwhile, the net income contribution of SPC’s power distribution segment for the nine-month period slightly increased to P28.7 million “as the improvement brought by increasing demand from industrial and commercial customers was dimmed by temporary under-recoveries of cost of purchased power.”

SPC’s gross revenues rose by 34% to P1.99 billion as of September 2021 from P1.49 billion in the same months last year.

Shares in SPC at the local bourse declined by 0.14% or two centavos to finish at P13.84 apiece on Monday. — Bianca Angelica D. Añago

GAP chief Carrion elected to world gymnastic body

GAP President Cynthia Carrion — PHILIPPINE STAR FILE PHOTO

GYMNASTICS Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion won a spot to the powerful continental council representing Asia during the elections done by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) in Antalya, Turkey.

Ms. Carrion emerged with the second highest votes among the five elected members of the council after garnering 25 votes, or just one short of top vote-getter Saqr Al-Mullah of Kuwait.

Srayuth Patanasak of Thailand, Ruslan Mustaev of Uzbekistan and Ita Yuliati of Indonesia were the other members.

Japanese Morinari Watanabe, who was head of the committee that ran boxing in the Tokyo Olympics, overwhelmingly won another term as FIG president during polls attended by 130 national federations.

Ms. Carrion and the new set of officers will serve from Jan. 1, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2024.

A spot in the FIG council would be a big boost especially to the Philippines, which will have two-time world champion Carlos Yulo seeking to strike gold in the 2024 Paris Games. — JV

Credit Suisse trial may lift lid on banker’s fraud scheme

REUTERS

AN OFFSHORE UNIT of Credit Suisse Group AG goes to court Monday in a case that could lift the lid on how a rogue Geneva employee got away with defrauding some of the firm’s richest clients for nearly a decade.

Georgian billionaire and former prime minister Bidzina Ivanishvili accuses Credit Suisse Life (Bermuda) Ltd. of failing to stop the late Patrice Lescaudron from losing $400 million of his fortune.

Ivanishvili is one of at least five wealthy victims of Lescaudron who together lost hundreds of millions before the Frenchman’s fraud was exposed in 2015.

The Bermuda trial has suddenly gained in importance after the island’s Supreme Court ruled in September that a pair of reports — one by PricewaterhouseCoopers commissioned by Credit Suisse, and a second from Switzerland’s banking regulator — must be shared with the bank’s local unit so they could be admitted into evidence for the trial.

Up until the ruling, Credit Suisse had successfully fought in UK and Swiss courts to keep those reports private. But Bermuda judge Narinder Hargun made clear he was seeking to correct an imbalance in the Bermuda trial by admitting the reports into the pretrial process known as discovery.

“The bank has a direct economic interest in the outcome of these proceedings, and it seems clear that it is controlling the discovery process and indeed this litigation,” Hargun said.

Ivanishvili, worth an estimated $6 billion, sued the Bermuda unit four years ago for failing to ensure the prudent investment of his fortune. While Ivanishvili’s losses also spurred lawsuits in Singapore and New Zealand, Bermuda accounts for close to half of his total losses, his lawyers say.

Lescaudron, who took his own life in 2020, was a lone wolf who hid his crimes from colleagues and superiors, the Zurich-based bank has consistently said. Ivanishvili and other plaintiffs say that his colleagues must have known about his fraudulent behavior and if they didn’t, bear criminal responsibility for failing to spot it.

Both Credit Suisse and a spokesman for Ivanishvili declined to comment. — Bloomberg

Roxas and Co. swings to P22.5-M profit

ROXAS and Co., Inc. (RCI) reported a net income attributable to the parent equity holder of P22.54 million in the third quarter of 2021, a turnaround from its P841.05-million loss in the same quarter last year.

For the nine-month period, the company reported an attributable net loss of P54.64 million, down by 95% from its P1.18-billion loss in the same period last year.

“The strong topline growth was due to higher occupancy rate in its four GO Hotels, a surge in the volume of coconut cream sold, and the sale of real estate assets in Nasugbu, Batangas during the first quarter of the year,” the company said in a regulatory filing on the Philippine Stock exchange website on Monday.

Its after-tax income was also cut by 97% to 85.69 million from P1.21 billion a year ago “due to aggressive new business acquisition and organic growth of existing customers, cost containment and restructuring in COVID and recession-affected units, lower equity loss from an affiliated company, and the recognition of a P175 [million] one-time gain on transfer of a real estate asset.”

Its nine-month gross revenues grew by 150% to P789.96 million from P315.58 million in the same period last year.

One of the company’s accommodations that received more bookings due to eased quarantine restrictions is the Anya Resort in Tagaytay, while GO Hotels of the Roxaco Asia Hospitality Corp. has sustained occupancies for quarantine rooms.

RCI’s real estate projects are also picking up “with several outright sale and joint venture options for strategically located properties” of Roxaco Land Corp. and with the start of the development of the second and third phases of Anya Resort Residences.

The company also reported that its Roxas Sigma Agriventures, Inc. manufacturing plant had completed facility repairs and maintenance, and is set to resume full production on the third week of this month, which is also when the Development Bank of the Philippines will release the company’s second working capital loan worth P50 million.

On Monday, shares in RCI grew 2.86% or two centavos to close at P0.72 per share. — Bianca Angelica D. Añago

Stocks drop ahead of RTB offering, BSP review

BW FILE PHOTO

PHILIPPINE shares declined on Monday due to profit taking amid disappointing economic data ahead of the government’s retail Treasury bond offer and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) policy review.

The 30-member Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) decreased 40.47 points or 0.54% to end at 7,342.37, while the broader all shares index lost 13.15 points or 0.33% to close at 3,951.53 on Monday.

Regina Capital Development Corp. Head of Sales Luis A. Limlingan said in a Viber message that the market closed lower due to profit taking following weak regional and US data.

Investors also chose to stay on the sidelines ahead of the BSP’s policy meeting on Thursday, he said.

Meanwhile, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in a Viber message that the stock market’s decline was due to “the upcoming RTB (retail Treasury bond) issuance and other various fund-raising by the country’s biggest companies through the stock market and fixed income market, especially for the month of November 2021,” as funds to shift to these instruments.

The BTr will offer 5.5-year RTBs to raise at least P30 billion ($603 million), with a swap offer for bonds falling due in 2022, it said on Friday. The offer period is set to run from Nov. 16 to Nov. 26, unless the BTr closes it early. The papers will be issued on Dec. 2 and will mature by 2027.

Mr. Ricafort added that Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) announcement of higher electricity rates for this month could affect inflation, “which eats up on earnings and profit margins.”

In a statement on Friday, Meralco said the overall rate for a typical household jumped by P0.3256 per kilowatt-hour (/kWh) to P9.4630/kWh in November compared to the P9.1374/kWh in October “due to higher generation charge.”

According to Meralco, the generation charge for November increased by P0.2911/kWh to P5.3346/kWh due to the shutdown of the Malampaya natural gas facility.

Sectoral indices declined except for holding firms, which inched up by 0.71 point or 0.01% to 7,107.34.

Meanwhile, mining and oil dropped 313.55 points or 3.23% to 9,370.32; property lost 37.31 points or 1.10% to end at 3,339.77; financials declined by 15.39 points or 0.95% to 1,598.33; industrials gave up 64.25 points or 0.59% to close at 10,761.63; and services went down by 11.35 points or 0.56% to 1,992.77.

Value turnover declined to P7.96 billion with 1.30 billion issues traded on Monday, lower than the P10.42 billion with 1.55 billion shares seen on Friday.

Decliners beat advancers, 124 against 71, as 42 names closed unchanged.

Foreigners turned sellers anew with net outflows worth P342.41 million on Monday from the P306.23 million in net purchases recorded on Friday.

The PSEi’s initial support is at 7,300, “in view of last week’s intra-week low of 7,315,” while the next resistance is at the 7,400 to 7,500 levels, Mr. Ricafort added. — BADA
