Icardi salvages a point for 10-man PSG at Lorient

PARIS — Mauro Icardi’s stoppage-time strike helped 10-man Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) salvage a fortunate 1-1 draw at lowly Lorient in a dismal performance by the Ligue 1 leaders on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who had Sergio Ramos sent off, have 46 points from 19 games with Nice in second place 13 points behind after a 2-1 comeback win at home against RC Lens.

Third-placed Olympique de Marseille, who has a game in hand, trails Nice on goal difference after being caught cold at the Velodrome in a 1-1 draw against Stade de Reims, Dimitri Payet salvaging a point with a penalty eight minutes into injury time.

Stade Rennais is fourth on 31 points after a 2-1 defeat at Monaco.

Elsewhere, Montpellier consolidated their fifth place with a convincing 4-1 home victory against mid-table Angers and champion Lille moved up to eighth when Jonathan David’s late goal gave them a 3-2 victory at Girondins de Bordeaux.

The game between Clermont and Racing Strasbourg was postponed because of foggy conditions.

At Lorient’s Moustoir stadium, PSG were not only without the injured Neymar, but they also had to cope with the suspensions of Kylian Mbappé and Marco Verratti and they lacked inspiration.

Lorient’s Thomas Monconduit opened the scoring against PSG with a superb, slightly-deflected strike that went into the top corner five minutes from the interval.

While Lionel Messi had a couple of chances after the break, the visitors had their first shot on target in the 81st minute when the Argentine forward’s strike was parried by Paul Nardi.

Ramos, who had replaced Nuno Mendes at half time, was then sent off with five minutes left after picking up two yellow cards on a night to forget for the capital side until Icardi headed home from Achraf Hakimi’s cross two minutes into injury time.

The result left Lorient second from bottom on 16 points, four ahead of St.-Etienne who was beaten 1-0 at home by Nantes. — Reuters

Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham reach League Cup semifinals

LONDON — A much-changed Chelsea side featuring three teenaged debutants beat Brentford (2-0) on Wednesday to reach the League Cup semifinals where they will face London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

An own goal 10 minutes from time by Pontus Jansson broke the deadlock at Brentford before a Jorginho penalty sealed victory for Thomas Tuchel’s COVID-hit side.

In a thriller at Anfield, a weakened Liverpool side came back from the brink to beat Leicester City on penalties after a 3-3 draw, setting up a semifinal against Arsenal.

Jamie Vardy’s early double gave Leicester a 2-0 lead and James Maddison’s rocket shot made it 3-1 after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had pulled a goal back.

But Diogo Jota struck in the 68th minute before Takumi Minamino leveled in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Minamino then spurned a chance to send Liverpool through in the ensuing penalty shoot-out as he blazed his effort over the bar. But Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher then saved Ryan Bertrand’s effort, his second save of the shoot-out, before Jota converted to win it for Liverpool.

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham, runners-up to Manchester City last season, made it through to the semis with a 2-1 home win against West Ham United — all the goals arriving in a five-minute spell in the first half.

Steven Bergwijn slotted in from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s cut back for his first goal of the season but West Ham leveled through Jarrod Bowen’s well-taken goal.

Bergwijn then set up Lucas Moura for the winner.

Arsenal beats third-tier Sunderland on Tuesday.

“It’s good for Tottenham to reach the semifinals of this competition,” Conte, who has changed the mood at Tottenham since taking over, said.

“You can see the names of these teams that have reached the semifinals — Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal with us — so every side wants to try to lift this trophy. Now, I’m seeing in England to win a trophy is very difficult.”

Considering the strain on their respective squads, the night’s ties offered full value for the fans.

Chelsea made eight changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend with manager Tuchel handing debuts to academy players Harvey Vale, Jude Soonsup-Bell and Xavier Simons.

Tuchel did later introduce regulars Jorginho, Reece James, Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante off the bench and it proved decisive for Chelsea.

It was a cross from the right from James that Jansson sliced into his own goal and Jorginho then tucked away a trademark spot kick.

“It was a brilliant result given the circumstances, the lineup and the situation,” Tuchel said. “Some of the guys who played were youngsters and the other guys had not many minutes, but they stepped up in a tough place.”

Liverpool made 10 changes to the side that started the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday with only Tyler Morton remaining.

And when Vardy scored twice inside the opening 13 minutes it seemed Jürgen Klopp’s side were on the way out.

But Minamino sent the tie to penalties with a superbly-taken goal and stand-in keeper Kelleher proved the hero with two saves to break Leicester’s hearts.

“I am really, really happy. Really happy with the performance, with the spirit, with the mentality, in a lot of moments with the football,” Klopp said.

The semifinals are scheduled for two legs in January, although Klopp says in the current circumstances, he would prefer just one game.

“I think it would be better with one game, absolutely, but obviously what I say is not too important, so if there are two games then we play two games,” he said. — Reuters

Ruined basketball?

Who knows what was on Iman Shumpert’s mind when he contended that LeBron James ruined basketball? Speaking on the Bootleg Kev Podcast that premiered on Tuesday, he said the four-time Most Valuable Player awardee “knows [it]. He thought he was making it better. I get it. Me, personally, I love the [National Basketball Association] for the loyalty that I thought was there. He basically knocked the fourth wall down.” And because of the subject, his views quickly became fodder for hoops habitués on both sides of the argument.

To be sure, the notion that James has forever changed the way teams are constructed is nothing new. Depending on perspective, he either enabled ring chasing to a ridiculous degree or showed players the way to having more control of their destiny. These days, long-term contracts are more the exception than the rule, and collective bargaining provisions supposedly highlighting the equity of the incumbent have become less potent in getting stars to stay. And, yes, The Decision in 2010 ushered in the era of increased mobility.

Nonetheless, it’s fair to call Shumpert to task for cherry-picking his facts. For one thing, players have tried to form superteams long before James was born; the annals of pro basketball is replete with examples of dynasties built on the shoulders of marquee names. For another, it doesn’t matter how these dynasties were built; whether they were the products of backroom deals of general managers or of crafty moves of players, the bottom line stayed the same.

Interestingly, Shumpert himself can best be described as a journeyman who toiled for fives franchises — including, lo and behold, the Cavaliers, during which he went to four straight Finals and claimed one championship. And, yes, James led the charge through all four seasons. For some reason, it seemed lost on him that he benefited from the so-called ruining of basketball. And as for loyalty, he certainly donned more uniforms that the target of his criticism.

Which leads to the most important aspect of the Podcast: It became significant only because it touched on James, and not because Shumpert was the guest. Perhaps, he would do well to stop riding on the coattails of the player he claims “ruined basketball.”

Market appetite boosts peso

THE PESO strengthened against the dollar on Thursday on stronger market appetite after studies hint that the Omicron variant leads to fewer hospitalizations.

The peso closed at P50.045 on Thursday against its P50.19 finish on Wednesday, according to the Bankers Association of the Philippines.

The peso opened at P50.14, with the intraday high at P50.04 and the low at P50.188.

Dollars exchanged grew to $848.27 million on Thursday from $1.06 billion a day earlier.

Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. Chief Economist Michael L. Ricafort said in a Viber message that the peso was likely stronger today after the global market appetite grew in response to studies showing lower hospitalization risks for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“The peso exchange rate [is] also stronger as Christmas draws closer alongside the spending spree that necessitate the conversion of overseas Filipino worker remittances to pesos in preparation for/to finance Christmas holiday spending,” he said.

A study from the United Kingdom showed that most people infected with the Omicron variant were less likely to be hospitalized than those with the Delta variant.

The study has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Mr. Ricafort added that the peso may have also strengthened after signals from the Budget department that President Rodrigo R. Duterte would sign the national budget before the end of 2021.

The department on Wednesday said it expects Mr. Duterte to sign the proposed P5.024-trillion national budget for 2022 after Christmas.

For Friday, Mr. Ricafort gave a forecast range of P49.9 to P50.1 per dollar. — Jenina P. Ibañez

Bargain hunting lifts PSEi after three-day slide

PHILIPPINE STAR/KRIZ JOHN ROSALES

PHILIPPINE stocks on Thursday climbed on bargain hunting after three days of decline in part after news that the country improved in the pandemic resilience ranking.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) gained 128.86 points or 1.81% to close at 7,248.05, while the broader all shares index rose 41.23 points or 1.08% to 3,838.45.

“The local bourse gained as investors hunt for bargains after the market declined for three consecutive days. In addition, the Philippines’ improvement in Bloomberg’s COVID-19 resilience ranking has provided a positive sentiment as well,” Philstocks Financial, Inc. Senior Research and Engagement Officer Claire T. Alviar said in a Viber message.

After being at the bottom of the list for three consecutive months, the Philippines has finally inched up three spots from being the worst country to be in the time of the pandemic, according to Bloomberg’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) resilience report for December.

“Philippine shares made a complete turnaround from Thursday’s selling, closing broadly higher as investors momentarily brushed aside fears from the spreading of the Omicron variant,” Regina Capital Development Corp. Head of Research Luis A. Limlingan said in a Viber message.

The Department of Health has so far reported three Omicron variant cases in the country. The Philippines has recorded 288 new COVID-19 cases as of last count, bringing the total number of infections to 2,837,903 since the pandemic hit the country in March 2020.

“Market is cheering the record low infection rate, more vaccine arrival, and mild symptoms of Omicron, all somewhat assuring continued Philippine economy reopening going into 2022,” First Metro Investment Corp. Head of Research Cristina S. Ulang said in a Viber message.

A South African study suggested reduced risks of hospitalization and severe disease in people infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant versus the Delta variant, Reuters reported.

The World Bank on Wednesday approved a new loan that would help the country procure 27 million vaccine doses, which can serve as booster doses for medical frontliners and to inoculate wider population.

Meanwhile, all sectoral indices ended in the green led by holding firms, which gained 180.67 points or 2.62% to 7,058.51. Property increased 68.99 points or 2.18% to 3,225.20; mining and oil advanced 116.01 or 1.28% to 9,158.94; financials improved 13.20 points or 0.82% to 1,613.73; industrial gained 69.16 points or 0.66% to 10,408.93; and services inched up 12.98 points or 0.65% to 1,992.72.

Trading turnover dropped to P4.61 billion with 851.10 million shares switching hands on Thursday, from P6.03 billion recorded with 1.61 billion issued traded the previous trading day.

Advancers outnumbered decliners, 115 against 58, while 49 names closed unchanged.

Foreigners turned buyers on Thursday with P282.34 million in net inflows, a reversal of the P173.79 million in net selling recorded on Wednesday. — Marielle C. Lucenio

What’s on your bedside reading table?

By Patricia Mirasol

From autobiographies to mystery novels and classic bestsellers, founders and business professionals give BusinessWorld readers a glimpse of their current reading fare.

The Philippines has a reading culture, the co-founders of the Big Bad Wolf book fair told BusinessWorld in a June interview. This observation is reflected in a 2017 Readership Survey commissioned by the National Book Development Board (NBDB) which found that 94% of its adult respondents enjoy reading.

Filipinos prefer reading physical books — although readership of e-books and audio books are gaining a significant share, the NBDB-commissioned survey showed. The survey found that more than three-quarters (76.75%) of its adult respondents said they had read a printed book in the last year.

E-BOOK OR OTHERWISE?
“There’s an undeniable magic to cracking open a 500-page novel and leafing through it, the tactile progress you make as you move through each chapter, the smell of the paper,” said Santiago J. Arnaiz, a multimedia journalist and venture storytelling consultant. Mr. Arnaiz opts for print when he wants to fully experience a story, and e-books for everything else.

For collectibles, hard copies are also still the preference of Niña L. Terol, chief marketing officer of Talino Venture Labs, a US-registered venture studio for financial services startups. But she still likes e-books for practical reasons.

“I used to be a die-hard, print-only person — until my eyesight started failing and e-books just became more practical,” she said. “Plus, you can bring so many books along during a trip.”

Less screentime, on the other hand, is a priority for both Kim Y. Lato, founder of online gadget store Kimstore, and Stephen Canning, CEO of cloud technology solution provider Jcurve.

“I prefer physical books as I often read at night and have a ‘no devices within three hours of sleep’ rule,” said Mr. Canning. “I do have a Kindle, though, and I take that with me when I travel.”

PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Self-awareness and practical insights are a prevailing theme among the individuals interviewed by BusinessWorld

“Robin Sharma is definitely one of my favorite authors,” said Ms. Lato. In The 5 AM Club, she said, the author proposed the merits of creating an early morning routine to get a head start in making the most out of the day, but not necessarily maximizing it (hence avoiding burnout in the long run).

“It’s a must-read for people who are very wired to their schedules, but have yet to create powerful routines that can help them connect with themselves on a deeper, more well-rounded level,” she added.

A visitor browsing Mr. Canning’s bookshelf, meanwhile, will note titles from Ryan Holiday, who writes on ancient philosophy and its place in daily life; Scott Peck, who advocated self-discipline and responsibility in his first book, The Road Less Travelled; and Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga, whose The Courage to Be Disliked guides readers through the concepts of self-forgiveness and mind decluttering.

His current read is Life & Work Principles by Ray Dalio, an American billionaire investor and founder of Bridgewater Associates, an investment management firm.

“Dalio is a man who understands what it takes to be successful, and he puts his success down to a set of principles,” Mr. Canning said, adding that Dalio’s philosophy could be summed up as “fail well.”

Anyone who wants to make meaningful changes in their business or personal life can benefit from the book, Mr. Canning said, as he summed up two insights he learned from it: using radical transparency to force issues to the surface, and being radically open-minded to tackle blind spots and one’s ego.

Mr. Arnaiz’s and Ms. Terol’s picks, respectively, are The Hard Thing About Hard Things by Ben Horowitz and BE 2.0 (Beyond Entrepreneurship): Turning Your Business into an Enduring Great Company by Jim Collins.

The Collins book has timeless gems that anyone in business should read, Ms. Terol said, whereas Horowitz’s work is invaluable for entrepreneurs living through the fourth industrial revolution, according to Mr. Arnaiz.

PERSONAL READS
Ms. Terol, whose leisure reading includes autobiographies, also suggests A Promised Land by Barack Obama and Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. The former narrates the former US president’s journey to the White House; the latter chronicles The Daily Show host’s formative years as the fruit of an illicit union between a white father and a black mother.

“[Noah] is a gifted author, and his stories about growing up as a ‘colored’ child in South Africa during the apartheid are so compelling,” she said.

For those who relish whodunnit mysteries, Mr. Arnaiz vouches for The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.

“I get really excited when I come across inventive new ways to present familiar stories,” he said. “It’s an incredible story, if only for the gorgeous writing and inventive structure.”

Turnton’s novel, he added, is about a protagonist who lives through the day of a murder again and again, as he experiences it through the eyes of eight different people present at the scene of the crime.

“You’d be surprised how often the things I’ve learned from fiction and the skills I’ve picked up playing Dungeons and Dragons [a paper and pencil role-playing game] have come in handy at work,” said Mr. Arnaiz, who also helps develop communication strategies for businesses.

Good work-life balance the determining factor for US firm’s choice of Baguio for PHL office

By Patricia Mirasol

Aumni, a Utah-based investment analytics firm, has chosen to set up its Philippine office in Baguio City. Northern Luzon’s untapped talent pool, as well as a better work-life balance, were cited as the reasons for this “intentional choice.”

“Baguio has easy access to great trekking trails and mountain climbing as well as to the beaches in La Union, Pangasinan, and Zambales. Employees spend less than 30 minutes traveling from house to office at any given time, leaving more room for personal and social activities. And Baguio is a multicultural city with rich artistic heritage,” said Maggie Po, Aumni’s vice-president for data operations in the Philippinse, in an e-mail to BusinessWorld.

Crafts and folk art represent a cornerstone of the city’s local trade and creative tourism economy, according to UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Fifty-six institutions are devoted to the sector, which total a gross receipt of 55,795,933.22 PHP million.

Aumni’s founder and CEO, Anthony Lewis, likens Baguio to Salt Lake City, where the company’s main offices are located. “That was an intentional choice to leverage an educated workforce in a geographic region that allows for both outdoor recreation, room for families, and a sophisticated environment for arts and culture,” Mr. Lewis said in a press release. “Baguio seems to offer a similar alternative for talented professionals in the Philippines. We care about our people and we believe that these locations are unique and offer something fresh.”

CAPABLE TALENT
Aumni’s Philippine office is focused on back-office operations and data research. Since setting up shop in Baguio at the start of 2021, it now has 153 staff, all of whom are provided benefits such as daily chef-catered meals, monthly employee swag, and quarterly bonuses.

“There is huge, raw, untapped talent in Northern Luzon that are hesitant to move to Manila,” said Aumni’s vice-president of culture Brendan Kussman, in a press statement. “With a solid talent and development program for these folks, a company could establish an equally productive and highly performing organization in Baguio City.”

He added that Baguio’s status as a university town helps the company find talents who are willing to learn complex topics, and are capable of critical thinking.

The name Aumni is a play on the venture capital term Asset Under Management (AUM), Ms. Po told BusinessWorld. AUM refers to the total value of the investment a venture fund manages on behalf of its investors, which is where the company’s product revolved around.

In August, Aumni announced it had closed a 2,511 PHP million Series B funding round led by investing banking company J.P. Morgan. The investments from the latest round will be used to deepen its presence with investors in the private capital markets, as well as expand its offering to limited partners, law firms, and company founders.

Globe network services up in Palawan

Field teams bring Christmas cheer as more areas restored

Globe is the first to restore network services in 16 municipalities and other areas across Palawan. Host to one of the country’s most beautiful beaches, Palawan experienced the tail end of typhoon Odette’s wrath, downing critical telecommunications infrastructure.

Scattered debris and collapsed bridges hindered travel causing our field teams to trek for several hours in order to reach our cell sites.

In San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, reinforcements from South Luzon have arrived paving the way for needed immediate repairs. Despite spending three nights on-ground, the team continues to work 24/7 to ensure network restoration in the area.

Mindanao is now closer to completion while Visayas restoration efforts remain in full throttle.

Our teams are working tirelessly on simultaneous cell site repairs across different areas affected by typhoon Odette.

Free and unlimited GoWiFi

Globe is also providing FREE and UNLIMITED GoWiFi in select malls, government offices and airports in Visayas and Mindanao areas affected by Typhoon Odette.

N.Korea’s Kim praises ‘fresh heyday’ in China relations as longtime envoy departs

KCNA VIA REUTERS

SEOUL – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised outgoing Chinese Ambassador Li Jinjun for helping to improve relations between Pyongyang and Beijing, state media reported on Thursday, as the envoy left office after seven years in the post.

Kim‘s comments were conveyed to Li by Choe Ryong Hae, a top official in the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, state news agency KCNA said. Li also met with North Korean premier Kim Tok Hun, KCNA reported.

Kim Jong Un highly praised the ambassador for successfully assisting several DPRK-China summit meetings over the past seven years, making much effort to develop the friendly relations between the two parties and the two countries and sharing bitters and sweets with the Korean people,” Choe told Li, using the initials of North Korea’s official name.

Kim is very satisfied that the North Korea-China relationship has entered a “fresh heyday” under the leadership of the ruling parties in each country, Choe said.

Li asked Choe to express his gratitude to Kim and congratulated the North Korean people on “making progress in all fields of socialist construction,” KCNA said.

China has been North Korea’s only major ally since the two signed a treaty in 1961, and international sanctions imposed over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes have made it more dependent than ever on Beijing for trade and other support.

Since Li was appointed in 2015, relations between the two countries have seen major ups and downs.

Kim sent China-North Korea relations to a historical low by prioritising nuclear weapons and missiles development, then harshly criticising Beijing when it supported international sanctions

Starting in 2018, however, Kim managed to quickly repair ties and made his first known international trip as leader to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Xi later visited Pyongyang, the first by a Chinese leader in 14 years.

U.S. SEC rejects Apple bid to block shareholder proposal on forced labour -letter

REUTERS

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has declined an effort by Apple Inc to skip a shareholder proposal asking the iPhone maker to provide greater transparency in its efforts to keep forced labour out of its supply chain.

A group of shareholders earlier this year asked Apple‘s board to prepare a report on how the company protects workers in its supply chain from forced labour. The request for information covered the extent to which Apple has identified suppliers and sub-suppliers that are a risk for forced labour, and how many suppliers Apple has taken action against.

In a letter from the SEC reviewed by Reuters on Wednesday, regulators denied Apple‘s move to block the proposal, saying that “it does not appear that the essential objectives of the proposal have been implemented” so far.

The letter means that Apple will have to face a vote on the proposal at its annual shareholder meeting next year, barring a deal with the shareholders who made it.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

American lawmakers last week passed a bill banning imports from China’s Xinjiang region over concerns about forced labour.

“There’s rightfully growing concern at all levels of government about the concentration camp-like conditions for Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims living under Chinese government rule,” Vicky Wyatt, campaign director for SumOfUs, a group supporting the shareholder proposal, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Apple routinely asks the SEC to skip shareholder proposals, and the requests are granted about half the time.

The SEC also denied Apple‘s request to skip a shareholder proposal that would give investors more information about the company’s use of non-disclosure agreements. – Reuters

Canada expands aid programs to fight Omicron, says worse yet to come

OTTAWA – Canada will temporarily expand support programs to help people and businesses hit by the Omicron variant of COVID-19, Ottawa said on Wednesday, warning people that worse was to come as the virus spreads.

Theresa Tam, the country’s chief public health officer, urged Canadians to take precautions, telling a briefing that “the situation can rapidly get out of hand anywhere.”

The highly-contagious Omicron variant has prompted several of Canada‘s 10 provinces to reimpose restrictions. Quebec said on Wednesday that gatherings of people at private homes and restaurants would be cut to six from 10, starting on Sunday.

“I do not want to minimize … the fact that we are in for some even tougher times ahead. That is true and that is really hard,” said Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

Canada has 2,360 confirmed Omicron cases to date. Daily new coronavirus cases jumped to 11,300 on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, revealing that three of his staff and another three members of his security detail had tested positive, said he knew Canadians did not want to be facing another threat.

“We’re tired of COVID, we want it to just go away,” he said in the same briefing.

Quebec premier Francois Legault told reporters that daily cases of COVID-19 had more than trebled in a week.

“We don’t want this to swamp hospitals,” he said, predicting the next few weeks or so would represent a very tough test.

Quebec, along with Ontario and British Columbia, had already announced a range of restrictions, which business associations said would hit restaurants and bars.

Ottawa will temporarily expand programs designed to cover the costs of wages and rent until Feb. 12, which Freeland said should help businesses that have seen their capacity cut by 50% or more because of measures to curb COVID-19.

In October the government said it was winding down much of its pandemic-related support, citing the recovering economy and the success of vaccination efforts. – Reuters
