Alternatives to a team-building program

Many of our department managers are in conflict with one another due to miscommunication. This prevents us from creating a highly-coordinated management team. Our human resource department recommends that we undergo a team-building workshop with the help of an external facilitator. It includes a weekend trip to a resort in Tagaytay where we can unwind from the stress, listen to inspiring stories, enjoy games, and relax, while attempting to heal our internal conflicts. Is team-building the correct approach for us? — Questioning.
An old lady went to a tombstone cutter’s workshop to order a stone for her husband’s grave. After explaining that all she wanted was a small one with no frills as requested by her deceased husband, she told him to put the following words — “To My Husband” in a suitable place in the stone.
When the stone was completed and delivered, she saw, to her utter horror, the inscription: “To My Husband — In a Suitable Place.”
Miscommunication is the root of all evil. Many times, we hear but we don’t listen hard enough to understand everything. Being a good listener goes beyond practicing basic listening skills. In most cases, we also have to understand the context of the situation. But since we live in an imperfect world, mistakes do happen arising out of miscommunication.
In the workplace, miscommunication becomes too pronounced when people start arguing and defending their respective comfort zones. If miscommunication is an issue, I’m afraid that team building may not be the right intervention. According to management professor Rene Domingo of the Asian Institute of Management:
“Team-building exercises cannot build a great team. Building one starts with getting highly talented, self-motivated, dedicated professionals, organizing them to achieve a common goal. As in professional basketball or football teams and Formula 1 pit stop crews, there are no amateurs that could compromise the chances of winning.
“Even bench players are equally highly competent, ready to perform expertly when called upon to join the team. The spare tire should be as good as the other four. Team building exercises, often gamified to exhilarate, have short-term results.”
Mr. Domingo has an ally in Carlos Valdes-Dapena, who wrote “Stop Wasting Money on Team Building” for the Harvard Business Review. Mr. Valdez-Dapena, a researcher in the field of team effectiveness, claims that “(e)vents like these (team building programs) may get people to feel closer for a little while; shared emotions can bond people. Those bonds, though, do not hold up under the day-to-day pressures of an organization focused on delivering results.
Really, team building and team play are a lot easier to preach than to practice. Therefore, if a team building program is not advisable, then what can we do? Of course, there are practical and inexpensive options that your organization can select. These include the following seven step-by-step process which I developed over the years, using my more than 12 years of experience as an accredited court-annexed mediator.
In your case, the conflict can be resolved with the help of the HR department acting as an internal mediator:
One, initiate positive action by talking with the other person. This is easier said than done. You can designate HR or a common friend (with the same rank as the protagonists) to act as a mediator. Do this on neutral ground, preferably inside a vacant board room to avoid disturbance. This is needed so other employees don’t overhear the discussion.
Two, focus on specific behavior, not the personality of each party. Define the basic issue and discover its root cause or causes. Be specific on what went wrong. Be clear about it so that there is no room for misinterpretation. With the help of a mediator, the parties should be able to narrow down the basic problem and its peripheral issues.
Three, do some active listening. Many of us do not listen to understand, but we listen with the intention to have an immediate reply. You can’t solve a problem without active listening. However, it doesn’t mean that the other party must endure a 20-minute monologue by another. If this happens, the mediator should come in to redirect the discussion.
Four, be clear about the issues of disagreement. Define them in unambiguous terms. Sometimes, you will be surprised that the issue or issues may not be caused by one of the parties, but by someone else, who for some reasons may not be identified by the concerned party. If this happens, the mediator should ask specific questions that would help zero in on the issues.
Five, agree on all possible solutions to resolve the conflict. All solutions must come from both parties. The more they participate in coming up with solutions, the greater the chances that the issues are resolved. However, never rush the parties into resolving the issue or issues. Sometimes, one or both parties may need time to think it over.
Six, follow through on the implementation of the agreement. Things are not always what they seem to be even in the presence of a formal agreement. When things are not looking good, the mediator should immediately get both sides of the story before attempting to resolve the matter or propose a win-win solution.
Last, discover and celebrate the small wins. Celebrating progress, no matter how small, is crucial for healing and its long-term success. It’s also a morale booster for all parties. The mediator should continue encourage the parties to do their best in ending their rift. And try to track down all concerns, no matter how trivial they appear to be.

Aiming to please

By Anthony L. Cuaycong
AT THE TURN of the millennium, SNK Corp. came out with the two-dimensional SNK Gals’ Fighters on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Designed to be the female version of the hugely successful The King of Fighters series, it was released near the end of the handheld’s life cycle. Needless to say, it was an attempt to boost flagging sales; it tried to widen the user base by making 10 distaff characters from popular licenses its protagonists under proven gameplay mechanics.
Even as SNK Gals’ Fighters ultimately failed to help prop up the Neo Geo Pocket Color, SNK evidently thought it had a potential hit in its hands. Under a different set of circumstances and with a few tweaks here and there, it figured to meet the same goals. Which, in a nutshell, was how the idea of a revival germinated nearly two decades after the title’s initial availability on store shelves. When the mere possibility actually got the green light is subject to speculation. What isn’t: The studio’s decision to follow up last year’s The King of Fighters XIV with SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.
Made commercially available last month, the spiritual successor to SNK Gals’ Fighters bears a striking resemblance to the latest iteration of the gaming company’s most accomplished franchise. Indeed, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy boasts of the same look and feel as The King of Fighters XIV, featuring the rendition of three-dimensional models over a two-dimensional plane and the employment of frenetic music tracks that further inject a sense of urgency to the proceedings.
Where SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy departs from its older sibling is, as its name indicates, in its all-female roster of fighters operating under a tag-team setup. Twelve — from such notable series as The King of Fighters, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, and Art of Fighting — are available at the outset, with downloadable content promising to expand the list. (The latest additions: Thief Arthur and Skullo Mania.) And instead of offering the usual mano-a-mano matches, the game goes the two-versus-two route, but with only one character in the theater of battle at any given time. Players can choose any two characters at hand, send out a particular one to start, and then call for substitutions on an infinite number of instances. Protagonists on one side share a health bar, but possess a separate special-attack meter that fills up faster at rest, and that, once fully charged, sets up the Dream Finishes required for victory.
Corollary to the intent of SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy to interest the masses, controls have been simplified. Those steeped in fighting games may be disappointed with the lack of complexity of button combinations for spectacular moves, but newcomers will, no doubt, appreciate the absence of a learning curve. There are just four attack buttons, including one for throws. Moreover, crouching has been eliminated altogether, thereby streamlining combat for less experienced players.
Parenthetically, the relative ease with which SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy can be negotiated dovetails with its lighthearted treatment of the proceedings. The Story Mode, which fleshes out the chosen characters through a series of animated cutscenes interspersed with seven fights, displays humorous touches with no small measure of fan service. The costume customization options, which provide players with opportunities to have protagonists compete in various getups — or, as the case may be, stages of undress — lean on the side of comedy, with literally dozens of accessories on tap. Even the items that pop up on the field of combat from time to time for use against opponents convey some measure of silliness.
SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy 2
In a nutshell, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy represents SNK’s deliberate effort to court a more extensive consumer base, as highlighted by its status as the company’s first release on the Switch — and on a Nintendo platform in a long, long while. It’s a feast for the senses even when played on the go, and its interface has been programmed to cater to casual gamers, eliminating the need for them to purchase an arcade stick to stay competitive, whether against artificial intelligence on Story and Survival Modes or versus other players collocated or online.
Meanwhile, the characters’ narratives are compelling, and their thoughtful presentation speaks of the effort that went into their development. They lay claim to unique backstories, wardrobes, and special moves, in the process providing significant replay value. True, SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy isn’t the ultra-deep fighting game that spawns tournaments akin to the Evolution Championship Series. Then again, it isn’t meant to be. Broken down to brass tacks, it aims to please. And, in this regard, it delivers.
POSTSCRIPT:
Conan Exiles (PS4): Compared to other sandbox/survival titles like Subnautica, Minecraft, and Rust, it doesn’t look as artistic or as stylized. Nonetheless, its gameplay remains strangely compelling, propped up by the way it presents its harsh, arid climates. Despite all its flaws, it’s able to stand against its competitors well enough to warrant a purchase. It’s neither the best looking nor the most satisfying in its genre, but it’s inviting all the same. Fans of dark and gritty settings will find it right up their alley. (7/10)
Super Bomberman R (PS4): It’s an easy recommend for players on the lookout for party games. It’s perfect for a whole afternoon of unwinding with friends engaging in battles of oneupmanship, laced with loads of taunting for good measure. And longtime fans of the franchise will be happy to note that it’s the best and the brightest of the Bomberman brethren yet. At $39.99 for all its bells and whistles (and, signifying the PS4 stamp of approval, Ratchet and Clank on the roster), it’s a worthy addition to the library of Sony stalwarts and casual gamers alike. (8/10)

Think there’s nothing more to do in Hong Kong Disneyland? Think again.

By Nickky Faustine P. de Guzman
Reporter
FROM SIMULATED SNOW to new rides and shows, Hong Kong Disneyland (HKDL) is upgrading and refreshing its offerings in time for the holidays — and beyond.
Only two hours and a few minutes away from Metro Manila via plane, Hong Kong is one many Filipino’s favorite quick getaways, and to capitalize on this, HKDL will be offering new sights and sites for first-time and repeat visitors starting in November.
Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday — Every evening at 7 p.m. from Nov. 7 to February next year, the whole strip of Main Street USA will turn into a big movie screen for the We Love Mickey projection show, highlighting and revisiting the beloved character’s history and memorable moments. The eight-minute projection show concludes with Mickey Mouse’s live appearance and performance. Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday celebration, called “World’s Biggest Mouse Party,” also features new costumes for Mickey and Minnie Mouse, exclusive merchandise, special themed food and drinks which may or may not include lots of cheese.
Guests dropping by on Mickey’s birthday on Nov. 18 will receive special birthday stickers.
Winter Wonderland — For someone from a tropical country, snow is completely foreign and often a distant dream. But not in HKDL. Although it’s only a simulation, snow will fall periodically in HL Disney Land during the evening.
The entire park will be transformed into a big Christmas gathering where Disney characters will be dressed in Christmas outfits for the “Mickey and Friends Christmas-time Ball.” The park will be decked out in Christmas decorations, and there will be yuletide carols and merrymaking. The celebration will extend to Disney’s three hotels — the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, the Disney’s Hollywood Hotel, and the Disney Explorers Lodge — where guests will enjoy complimentary services and special offers. The winter festivities run from Nov. 15 to Jan. 1.

Hong Kong Disneyland 2
Moana: A Homecoming Celebration

Santa Goofy — For the holidays, Goofy, the clumsy but lovable dog, will transform into Santa Claus. Santa Goofy, as he will be called, will meet his fans at the Christmas Post Office on Main Street where he will receive their holiday letters and messages and have them delivered to their loved ones anywhere in the world. There will be selections of Christmas-themed cards available and they will come with a Santa Goofy commemorative stamp.
80 plus holiday-themed food and drinks — From Mickey Mouse-shaped crispy rice lollipops and Minnie-themed marshmallow to drinks — like tea, coffee, and chocolate shakes — with Disney character designs, the park and the Disneyland Hotel will offer treats that are not only too cute to eat (almost) but yummy as well.
Exclusive HKDL treats: Moana and Ant Man — Since May 25, HK Disneyland has been presenting Moana: A Homecoming Celebration, a 20-minute show inspired by the movie heroine’s adventures. HKDL is the first Disney park in the world to show Moana (which, in case you didn’t know, is a name and a word in the South Pacific that means “ocean”). The outdoor show involves live acting, visual storytelling, dancing, live music, audience interaction, and puppetry.
Meanwhile, early in 2019, HK Disneyland will unveil another exclusive attraction: Ant Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle, featuring the tiny superhero with a big heart and massive superpowers.
Sales for Filipino guests — Filipinos who stay in any of the Disney hotels can avail of special offers: up to 20% off on any room at any hotel until Feb. 13; avail of the “Two-Day Fun” special package at HK$699 and receive HK$30 worth of merchandise discounts and free popcorn (only until Dec. 31).
At the end of the day, when the merrymaking is over and done, it’s the memories shared with family and friends that we should treasure the most.
(Members of the media visited the park on the invitation of Hong Kong Disneyland on Sept. 27-29.)

Hong Kong Disneyland 3

A Disney Halloween

BEFORE Santa and sleigh bells fill Hong Kong Disneyland, first it has to make it through Halloween, and it knows how to make the celebration fun with the Disney Halloween Time 2018 Experience — the all-new “Journey to Halloween Town” immersive walkthrough.
The Nightmare Before Christmas’ Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie will loom large at the Main Gate of the park, with themed decorations pointing the way to the new walkthrough experience, “Journey to Halloween Town,” at The Pavilion. Up until to Oct. 31 this recreation of Halloween Town from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas will have visitors facing down the “Pumpkin King” and his friends.
Meanwhile, lots of Disney friends and villains will have wicked encounters with guests at Mickey’s Halloween Time Street Party and Halloween Time Festival Gardens. At night, the park will be hauntingly fun as Disney villains come out to join Villains Night Out! Chapter 3 and turn the park upside down.
In true Disney Halloween fashion, an extensive range of themed merchandise and food and beverage items are available, along with spooky Halloween decor and recreational activities across the resort’s three themed hotels.

MoBiLET, more than just a wheelchair

The issues revolving around societal aging has spurred the growth and development of geriatric Assistive Devices (AD), which include wheelchairs and supportive instruments for the elderly. While these address the critical matters of aging and emphasize the enhancement of physical aids, nominal attention has been given to the psychological aspects.
Single Person Transport Design (SPTD), the developer of MoBiLET—an innovative electric-powered, personal-mobility device—seeks to highlight the importance of product design that helps boost the level of self-motivation of the elderly. Set to participate in the upcoming Eco Expo Asia in October 2018, SPTD intends to utilize the platform as a medium to strengthen their brand positioning and bring greater exposure of their latest product and rental schemes in the Start-up Zone to potential investors and buyers.

Empowering the Senior Population
In correlation to an aging economy, the natural progression brings about a detrimental suite of mobility-related difficulties, which typically results in social isolation and low self-esteem. One of the most common solutions for overcoming these maneuverability problems is the usage of wheelchairs. However, due to the negative connotations of disability linked to these wheelchairs, most users are resistant towards it. Arnold, Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and founding member of SPTD said, “Many people refuse to use wheelchairs due to its unfavorable image. Why not attempt to change that?”
SPTD holds the strong belief that as compared to solely enhancing physical attributes, the quality of life for seniors can be better cultivated through the fostering of their mental wellbeing. Introducing MoBiLET in 2014, it aims to eliminate the adverse perceptions associated with wheelchairs and transform it from a basic type of transportation into a form of artistic self-expression.
Aside from its artfully-striking designs, MoBiLET also features several customizable options, including seat, cushion and color choices for the clients to express their creativity through device personalization, allowing users to convey their thoughts in bold visual statements.
Designed with sturdiness and usability in mind, MoBiLET boasts greater structural adaptability, flexibility and safety standards than traditional wheelchairs. With a space-efficient turning radius of only 65cm, it allows users to move easily within tight spaces. Equipped with a medical-grade stainless steel frame reinforced with automotive-grade glass fiber casing, the device remains lightweight despite its augmented durability. MoBiLET comes with inbuilt internal control and suspension mechanisms that provide stability even when traveling on slopes or uneven surfaces. MoBiLET-BUBBLE, the next model of the MoBiLET is now in the R&D stage. It is equipped with a driving assistance system to perceive surroundings and avoid obstacles by installing multi-sensors.
SPTD believes that every individual deserves fair and equal rights to optimal living conditions, regardless of physical differences. A step further than a rehabilitative aid, Arnold defines the MoBiLET as a tool for empowerment that fuels the innate adventurous spirits of users.
Accelerating Product Promotion & Diversifying Business Models at the HKTDC Fair
Having participated in several fairs previously with interactions towards multiple audiences including the elderly, health care workers and local tech developers, Arnold commented, “It’s good for marketing as we can offer interested parties on-site device testing. By allowing them to use the MoBiLET directly, the conversion rate is considerably higher as opposed to simply displaying promotional videos.
At the Eco Expo Asia, where both B2C and B2B trading platforms showcased the latest green products and technologies, SPTD took the opportunity to network with shopping mall owners, community centers and NGOs for collaboration on a shared wheelchair rental scheme to establish a unique indoor transport network. As part of the SPTD’s vision, they envisage a future in shopping malls where anyone, not just the elderly, can hire a MoBiLET device at any indoor access point. While the business model may hold similarities to current bicycle-sharing operations, the distinguishing factor lies in the fact that MoBiLET can be used indoors, while bicycles cannot.
The station of the rental scheme, which serve the function of user registration, wireless activate/deactivate MoBiLET& charging
Leveraging on the possibilities offered through the Eco Expo Asia, Arnold is considering the further expansion of SPTD’s rental scheme. In this expanded model, the MoBiLET can be used outdoors and function as a short-term transportation system that prides itself on being an affordable, accessible and greener alternative mode of commute. SPTD’s ultimate goal is to magnify awareness of environmental issues by promoting the use of personal mobility vehicles and reducing the general reliance on private cars.
Empowered by HKTDC’s initiatives, SPTD will strive to continually upgrade and reinvent itself in its strive to improve the public’s perception of transportation for the physically-challenged through MoBiLET, a revolution on wheels.

Money and our faith

ACCORDING to Greg Laurie, money is a very important topic in the bible. It is the subject of nearly half of the parables of Jesus Christ. It is covered in one out of every seven verses in the New Testament. The Bible offers 500 verses on prayer, fewer than 500 verses on faith and more than 2000 verses on money. And 15% of everything Jesus taught was on the topic of money and possessions — more than his teachings on heaven and hell combined.
I would not have a way of personally validating this claim, but I am inclined to believe in Laurie’s presentation. Clearly, a number of parables offer a lot of lessons about our finances. Jesus communicated to the community in terms they understand best which is through material possessions, although oftentimes the message offers deeper meanings.
Whenever I teach about the concept of time value of money in finance, I enjoin my students to reflect upon the parable of the talents and how the return of the same number of talents by one servant who merely hid what was assigned to him totally displeased his master. Talent, by the way, was a unit of currency in those times. While the parable can be interpreted in many ways, at its core the master expected that the money should have been deposited at the least with bankers and earn some interest. Inflation, opportunity cost and uncertainty are the rationale for money’s time value and this parable underscores this concept.
In the book, Your Money Matters written by Gary Inrig, he cited parables Jesus shared in his ministry on earth which involved financial examples and how we should view money and wealth. One of those is the parable of the shrewd manager or the dishonest steward. Some of the gems from that parable are as follows: we must recognize the limits of wealth because at the end of the day, when we die, we cannot bring anything from this world. Money is powerful but limited, temporary and temporal.
On the contrary, money is valuable when used to meet the needs of the less fortunate and when helping others with their needs. The Lord calls us to use money shrewdly, but for eternal reasons.
Faithfulness with money is primarily an issue of character. Present wealth is really a very little thing. In fact, it is not ours at all. We are stewards, not owners. If we use our present possessions as if they belong to us, we are acting exactly like the dishonest manager. We are owners of nothing, stewards of everything. What we possess is to be used to further the master’s purposes and goals. The primary value of earthly wealth is that it is a tool to train us to handle “true riches,” which refers to the affairs of the kingdom. This includes opportunities to serve the Lord in furthering His purposes on earth.
Shrewd disciples recognize that stewardship of money prevents bondage to money. We can serve God with money, but we can never serve God and money. We can only have one master and it’s quite easy to be slaves of materialism if we will not have control over it. There is no partial discipleship to Jesus and there is no part-time employment by money. Imagine how you can change money into an ally.
One of my staff comes from a different Christian faith. She shared with me her perspective about these parables and how she sees money from the bible’s viewpoint. She quotes from Ecclesiastes which asserts that money is a protection just like wisdom. The only difference is that wisdom preserves the life of its owner. One may have money and can use that to buy all sorts of luxuries in the world but when sickness comes, can the luxuries preserve his life? Not at all. But if one secures money and saves part for emergencies and contingencies, it may be deployed to address sickness in life. That we can consider wisdom in using one’s wealth.
She stressed that being rich is not bad, rather being obsessed to be rich is. For both rich and poor can be victims of greed if they will not put into proper perspective their viewpoint about money. “Money is the root of all sorts of injurious things and those determined to be rich has been led astray from faith and have stabbed themselves with so much pain.”
Investing money, creating a business, working to make a living — all these things are not bad in itself. It becomes bad when it takes the center stage of our lives and we forget our faith. We only need enough to be happy or to survive this life for “even when a person has an abundance, his life does not result from the things he possesses”.
Determining how much is enough is left to us but the our motives should be guided. Jesus used money to illustrate life lessons because people can relate to it. Yet he extended his message loud and clear — money is as good as we are in this world. The measurement of our real worth is not counted by our material possessions. It is how we use our knowledge of finance to make a positive difference in this world where money is a means for a more noble, eternal purpose.
