One dead from Nipah virus in India’s Kerala, second death this year

KOCHI, India — A 24-year-old student has died from the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala, a local medical official said on Monday, and 151 people who came into contact with the victim are under observation to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

This is the second death caused by Nipah in Kerala since July. Nipah is classified as a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) because of its potential to trigger an epidemic. There is no vaccine to prevent infection and no treatment to cure it.

Parts of Kerala are among those most at risk globally for outbreaks of the virus, a Reuters investigation showed last year. Nipah, which comes from fruit bats and animals such as pigs, can cause a lethal, brain-swelling fever in humans.

The student starting showing fever symptoms on Sept. 4 and died five days later, said R. Renuka, a district medical officer in the town of Malappuram, located in northern Kerala.

The testing of a blood sample from the victim sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune confirmed a Nipah infection on Sept. 9, Renuka said.

Five other people who have developed primary symptoms of a Nipah infection have had blood samples drawn and they were sent for tests, she said, without saying if they were primary contacts of the dead person.

Nearly 151 people are being monitored for any symptoms after they were found to be on the primary contact list of the victim, who had come from Bengaluru, she said.

This is the second death from a Nipah infection in Malappuram this year after a 14-year-old boy succumbed in July.

BingoPlus Foundation champions digital empowerment for PWDs through partnership with DSWD

The BingoPlus Foundation team leads PWDs to the newly established PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood, paving the way for their digital empowerment and skills development.

In a significant stride toward promoting inclusivity and digital empowerment, the BingoPlus Foundation, in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), officially turned over the PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood to the Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center (AVRC) II in Brgy. Labangon, Cebu City. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the Foundation’s ongoing mission to uplift communities and create opportunities for a brighter, more inclusive future for all Filipinos.

The PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood, under the FutureSmart Program, received a donation of state-of-the-art equipment from the BingoPlus Foundation, including 20 desktop computers for its vocational training rooms and knowledge library and a set of industrial large-format tarpaulin printer and heat press machine for its Commercial Arts room — all valued at P1.5 million. These resources aim to enhance the digital skills and creative potential of AVRC II trainees, particularly persons with disabilities (PWDs) and those seeking social rehabilitation.

Celeste Jovenir, DigiPlus Vice-President for Investor Relations and BingoPlus Foundation COO, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Today, as we gather for the turnover of the PLUS Centers for Technology and Livelihood to the DSWD, we are not just handing over equipment; we are handing over opportunities that can change the course of many lives. Our partnership is rooted in a shared vision of a more inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, has the chance to thrive in the digital economy.”

PWD trainees at the PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood are able to access digital literacy and design courses at the DSWD AVRC through audio software and speech-to-text technology.

The donated equipment addresses the AVRC’s expressed needs, particularly in enhancing its capacity to deliver vocational training in digital literacy, graphic design, and printing — skills crucial for employability in today’s digital economy. The tarpaulin printer and heat press machine, for example, provide tools for those in the Commercial Arts track to develop skills for potential careers in creative industries. Desktop computers equipped with audio software and speech-to-text technology make learning basic and advanced IT skills within reach of the PWD clients of AVRC. Graduates of courses may continue to use the equipment to jumpstart job applications, remote work opportunities or even to launch their own small businesses

Dr. Jera D. Armendarez of AVRC II expressed her gratitude, noting, “Our trainees will find this equipment immensely useful as they seek employment in creative industries or consider venturing into businesses of their own. This collaboration is a testament to the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in creating meaningful change.”

A commitment to social impact and resilient futures

The BingoPlus Foundation, as the social development arm of DigiPlus Interactive Corp., is committed to empowering communities through strategic partnerships and innovative programs. The Foundation’s FutureSmart E-Plus Center Program aligns with the DSWD’s “Adopt-A-Center” project under its Partnerships and Building Resource Mobilization Office. By integrating efforts, both organizations are enhancing skills development programs for PWDs, enabling them to unlock their full potential and achieve greater independence.

DSWD 7 Regional Director Shalaine Marie S. Lucero highlighted the impact of this partnership: “With this new equipment, we are not only expanding our capacity to serve our clients, but we are also opening new pathways for them to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world. We are grateful to the BingoPlus Foundation for their support and shared commitment to our mission.”

Expanding horizons and digital futures

BingoPlus Foundation team, led by Chief Operations Officer Celeste Jovenir and Executive Director Angela Camins-Wieneke, officially turns over essential digital equipment and supplies to DSWD for the PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood, marking a milestone in their shared mission of inclusivity and empowerment.

The PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood is just one of the many initiatives under the BingoPlus Foundation’s broad portfolio of social responsibility programs. From educational scholarships to disaster relief efforts, the Foundation has been at the forefront of providing comprehensive support to communities in need. Recently, the Foundation allocated P10 million to aid families affected by Super Typhoon Carina and pledged millions more to various causes, including digital literacy and vocational training.

“Our goal is to break down barriers and open new career paths for PWDs,” added Jovenir. “These tools are not just machines; they are gateways to independence, creativity, and self-sufficiency.”

Beneficiaries of the PLUS Center for Technology and Livelihood try out the newly donated equipment from BingoPlus Foundation, enhancing their skills and employability in today’s competitive digital economy.

From startup to scale-up: How RCBC’s Boz App supports digital entrepreneurs

Before the pandemic, only 2% of all Filipinos said that they had purchased food or services online according to the Philippine Institute of Developmental Studies. Now, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow by 13% from $22 billion in 2023 to more than $24 million in 2024. This drastic change in Filipino lifestyle has led to the proliferation of online businesses, which has resulted in the growth of Philippine e-commerce.

However, starting a business, whether online or not, can be difficult especially if prospective business owners do not understand the know-how of their industry. Entrepreneurs, aside from navigating the complexities of digital marketing and e-commerce platforms, must also face the challenge of making sure that their suppliers and employees get their due while keeping track of their goals and transactions.

To help online businesses and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with these problems, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) has introduced the RCBC Boz App, an all-in-one tool aimed to help small and new business owners manage their finances, level up their boss moves, and focus on business objectives.

Running a successful business venture can make it challenging to keep track of every transaction and order which is why the app is designed to reduce administrative burdens. This allows business owners to not sweat the small stuff and stay on top of everything while they focus on growing their businesses and achieving their goals.

Available to download for free from the App Store and Play Store, the RCBC Boz App offers a suite of elements that make it easier for businesses to manage their finances and plan for growth.

The app is equipped with various features that make managing a business much easier such as transaction tracking, automated payroll, e-invoices for easier collections, saving up for goals, and keeping track of performance with real-time reports.

Through the Boz App, entrepreneurs can easily create and manage invoices with just a few taps. In the platform’s invoice dashboard, MSMEs are able to issue, monitor, and follow up collections from their clients in the comfort of their phones. Conveniently, it also lets users set due dates as well as add orders or purchased items to the invoice.

RCBC’s all-in-one tool also ensures businesses get their employees paid on time, every time. The Boz App allows small business owners to pay their employees’ salaries with ease and automatically to bank accounts or mobile wallets. As added security, business owners have the option to add payroll confirmation prior to disbursement.

Payment of expenses can also be organized and scheduled through the Boz App. Entrepreneurs may create an expense budget, add expense types, set payment schedules, and even add suppliers.

Furthermore, the app helps business owners achieve their ambitions of expanding or opening new branches through the Business Goals feature. Users of the Boz App can start dreaming of scaling up their businesses by creating goals, determining how they plan to save up, and confirming their commitment.

Moreover, RCBC’s new app also gives entrepreneurs accurate weekly, monthly, or yearly summaries of their collections, expenses, and business earnings provided that they appropriately tag their transactions. This can help in better financial management, enabling users to make informed decisions, track their profitability, and plan for future growth more effectively.

Prospective users of the Boz App simply have to download the app, and sign up using any active retail RCBC checking or savings account with the peso as the currency. For those who have yet to open an account with RCBC may already do so through the app. Aside from having a password for the account, users may also enable biometrics to feel more secure.

Startup businesses and enterprises, no matter how small or big they are, contribute to the country’s growth and help their online and offline communities thrive making them indispensable to the nation’s economic fabric. With tools like RCBC’s Boz App, digital stores, services, and businesses across the country, even up to the most remote and underserved areas, are more empowered to scale up and prosper.

Trump safe after new assassination attempt, suspect arrested

GAGE SKIDMORE- WIKIMEDIA.ORG

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe on Sunday after the Secret Service foiled what the FBI called an apparent assassination attempt while he was golfing on his course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Secret Service agents spotted and fired on a gunman in bushes near the property line of the golf course, a few hundred yards from where Trump was playing, law enforcement officials said.

The suspect left an AK-47-style assault rifle and other items at the scene and fled in a vehicle but was later arrested.

The apparent attempt on Mr. Trump’s life came just two months after he was shot at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, sustaining a minor injury to his right ear.

Both incidents highlight the challenges of keeping presidential candidates safe in a hotly contested and polarized campaign with just over seven weeks to go before the Nov. 5 election.

It was not clear if or how the suspect knew Mr. Trump was playing golf at the time, but the attempted attack was sure to raise new questions about the level of protection he is given.

CNN, Fox News and The New York Times identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, citing unnamed law enforcement officials. The FBI declined to comment and Reuters could not independently verify his identity.

Reuters found profiles on X, Facebook, and LinkedIn for a Ryan Routh who appeared to be the man identified as the suspect by those news organizations.

Reuters was not able to confirm these were the suspect’s accounts and law enforcement agencies declined to comment, but public access to the Facebook and X profiles was removed hours after the shooting.

The three accounts bearing Mr. Routh’s name suggest he was an avid supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia. In several of the posts, he appeared to be trying to help recruit soldiers for Ukraine’s war effort.

GUN BARREL IN BUSHES

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said Secret Service agents saw a rifle barrel poking out from bushes about 400 to 500 yards (365 to 460 meters) away from Trump as they cleared holes of potential threats ahead of his play.

The agents engaged the gunman, firing at least four rounds of ammunition around 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT).

The gunman then dropped his rifle, and left behind two backpacks and other items, and fled in a black Nissan car. The sheriff said a witness saw the gunman and managed to take photos of his car and license plate before he escaped.

“The Secret Service did exactly what should have been done,” Mr. Bradshaw said, declining to identify the suspect or provide a possible motive.

After the suspect fled the scene, police sent out an alert to statewide agencies with the information on his vehicle, which led to sheriff’s deputies in neighboring Martin County apprehending the suspect on I-95 about 40 miles (65km) from the golf course.

Fox News presenter Sean Hannity said he’d spoken to both Mr. Trump and Steve Witkoff, a New York real estate investor and longtime Trump friend who was on the golf course with him on Sunday.

“They were on the fifth hole. And the way Steve described this, the way the president described it, they both had exactly the same story, which is that they heard pop pop, pop pop,” said Hannity. The Secret Service “pounced on the president, covered him”, he added.

Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, in an interview with the New York Times, said he had spoken with Trump and the former president expressed gratitude for his Secret Service detail, adding that the president said, “These people are awesome.”

In response to a reporter’s question, officials acknowledged that because Trump is not in office, the full golf course was not cordoned off.

“If he was, we would have had the entire golf course surrounded,” Bradshaw said during Sunday’s briefing. “Because he’s not, security is limited to the areas that the Secret Service deems possible.”

Mr. Trump sent an email to supporters saying there were “gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” according to an email seen by Reuters.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed about the incident and were relieved to know that he was safe.

Mr. Biden later said he had directed his team to ensure the Secret Service has the resources it needs to ensure Trump’s safety, according to a statement released by the White House.

Mr. Trump is locked in a tight presidential election race with Harris, who has had a surge in the polls since replacing Biden as the Democratic Party’s candidate in July.

“Violence has no place in America,” Ms. Harris said in an X social media post.

On X in 2020, Routh expressed support for Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and mocked Biden as “sleepy Joe.”

Earlier this year, Mr. Routh tagged Mr. Biden in a post on X: “@POTUS Your campaign should be called something like KADAF. Keep America democratic and free. Trumps should be MASA …make Americans slaves again master. DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose.”

Mr. Trump’s running mate in the presidential election, U.S. Senator JD Vance, said he spoke to Trump after the shooting and that the former president was in good spirits.

Mr. Trump was grazed in the right ear and one rallygoer was killed in the gunfire at the Pennsylvania rally on July 13. The gunman, identified as a 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper.

That was the first shooting of a U.S. president or major party presidential candidate in more than four decades, and the glaring security lapse forced Kimberly Cheatle to resign as Secret Service director under bipartisan congressional pressure.

The Secret Service’s new acting director said in August that he was “ashamed” of the security lapse that led to the assassination attempt. – Reuters

First conviction under Hong Kong’s new national security law for wearing “seditious” T-shirt

 – A Hong Kong man on Monday pleaded guilty to sedition for wearing a T-shirt with a protest slogan, becoming the first person convicted under the city’s new national security law passed in March.

Chu Kai-pong, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of “doing with a seditious intention an act”.

Under the new security law, the maximum sentence for the offence has been expanded from two years to seven years in prison and could even go up to 10 years if “collusion with foreign forces” was found involved.

Mr. Chu was arrested on June 12 at a MTR station wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” and a yellow mask printed with “FDNOL”- the shorthand of another slogan “five demands, not one less”.

Both slogans were frequently chanted in the huge, sometimes violent pro-democracy protests in 2019 and June 12 was a key kick-off day of the months-long unrests.

Mr. Chu told police that he wore the T-shirt to remind people of the protests, the court heard.

Chief Magistrate Victor So, handpicked by the city leader John Lee to hear national security cases, adjourned the case to Thursday for sentencing.

Hong Kong was returned from Britain to China in 1997 under Beijing’s promise of guaranteeing its freedoms, including freedom of speech, would be protected under a “one country, two systems” formula.

Beijing imposed a national security law in 2020 punishing secession, subversion, terrorism or collusion with foreign forces with up to life in prison, after the months-long protests in the financial hub.

In March 2024, Hong Kong passed a second new security law — a home-grown ordinance also known as “Article 23” according to its parent provision in the city’s mini constitution, the Basic Law.

Critics, including the U.S. government have expressed concerns over the new security law and said the vaguely defined provisions regarding “sedition” could be used to curb dissent.

Hong Kong and Chinese officials have said it was necessary to plug “loopholes” in the national security regime. – Reuters

Rains lift Australian farm confidence, Rabobank survey shows

STOCK PHOTO | Image by Siggy Nowak from Pixabay

 – Improved rainfall across much of Australia has lifted farmers’ confidence in the future of the agricultural economy from low levels three months ago, a quarterly survey by Rabobank published on Monday showed.

Australia is one of the world’s biggest agricultural exports. Farm confidence plunged earlier in the year as unusually low rainfall in many regions threatened crop yields and pastures.

However, widespread rain has improved the crop outlook, and strong export demand has helped raise livestock prices.

“The patchy start to this year’s season has been corrected in many farming regions, especially in Western Australia where seasonal conditions looked dire last quarter but have really turned around,” said Rabobank executive Marcel van Doremaele.

“Livestock producers are more optimistic after improvements in cattle and sheep prices, and there are also positive signals for dairy production,” he said.

“Grain and cotton farmers, though, face more bearish conditions with global drivers putting downward pressure on prices.”

Rabobank’s survey of around 1,000 farmers found that 23% expected the agricultural economy to improve in the coming year, up from 15% three months ago.

Twenty-seven percent of respondents expected conditions to worsen, down from 36%, while 47% thought the situation would remain stable.

Drought remained the main worry for farmers but fewer were concerned than three months ago, and fear of rising input costs also lessened. – Reuters

SYDNEY/SINGAPORE – Macquarie Capital said on Monday its unit PhilTower Consortium Inc and Miescor Infrastructure Development Corp have completed a transaction that would create one of the largest independent telecommunications towers companies in the Philippines.

Macquarie Capital, part of top Australian investment bank Macquarie Group, did not provide financial details in the statement.

It said the new entity will command a portfolio of more than 3,300 operational towers, with a pipeline of more than 2,100 committed orders, and well positioned to meet the Philippines’ increased demand for connectivity and digital infrastructure.

The new entity is owned by a consortium including Macquarie Capital, Stonepeak, Manila Electric Company and Global Network Inc, according to the statement.

Macquarie Capital said it has been a shareholder in PhilTower since 2021.

The transaction has been approved by regulators in the Philippines, with all deal completion conditions completed, it added. – Reuters

 – The Philippines will continuously deploy vessels in the contested Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea, its coast guard said on Monday after a Philippine ship returned to port after a five-month deployment there.

“We will sustain presence over these waters,” Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Spokesperson Jay Tarriela told a press conference.

The PCG’s vessel, Teresa Magbanua, was deployed to Sabina Shoal in April to monitor what Manila suspects to be China‘s small-scale land reclamation activities in the area. It returned to port on Sunday.

Mr. Tarriela said the ship’s return was not related to China‘s demand for Manila to withdraw its vessel, instead it was so it could be repaired and to attend to the crew’s medical needs.Sabina Shoal, which China refers to as Xianbin Reef and the Philippines as the Escoda Shoal, lies west of the Philippine province of Palawan, within the country’s exclusive economic zone.

“Regardless of what size of vessel, regardless of how many vessels, the main objective and the commitment of the (PCG)commandant… is to make sure that at any one time, there will be a coast guard presence in the shoal,” Mr. Tarriela said.

China‘s coast guard said on Sunday it would continue to carry out law enforcement activities in the waters under Beijing’s jurisdiction in accordance with the law and safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.

China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, overlapping into maritime zones of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
