Black and White zine fair
INDEPENDENT bookstore Kwago and co-working and event space Warehouse Eight, Komura are organizing the first Black and White zine fair on Sept. 21, 2019, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. at Warehouse Eight, Makati. The fair, with over 40 zine makers, strips the zine down to its most basic format: several pages, printed in black and white, loosely folded, and stapled together. The fair also includes talks — with Adjani Arumpac of RESBAK who will discuss political zine making, Hulyen for democratizing creation through zines, Matanglawin Ateneo about mosquito press and how campus press is an instrument to freedom, and Gladys Regalado on how algorithm and new technology manufactures truth — and a screening of the film Portraits of Mosquito Press by JL Burgos about press freedom and independent writing. CCP 50th Anniversary Gala
THE HISTORY of the Cultural Center of the Philippines will be presented in BULAWAN: The CCP 50th Anniversary Gala on Sept. 20 and 21, 8 p.m., with a showcase of the best of Philippine art, from folk rituals and dances to modern visual arts; from literature to music. K-Pop Music Festival
THE FIRST Rainbow in Asia Music Festival will be held on Sept. 21 at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan City. The show will feature some of the best Korean pop groups and will be hosted by 2NE1 member and host Sandara Park and actor-host Ryan Bang. The performers are girl group Mamamoo, Oh My Girl, Winner and AB6ix, and solo artists Park Bom and Kriesha Chu. Band of Hope
THE FORMER frontmen of bands 6Cyclemind, Moonstar88, and Rivermaya will take the stage on Sept. 20, 5 p.m. at the Strike Gymnasium in Bacoor Government Center, for a one-night concert to raise funds to buy medical supplies for people with hemophilia and those who are undergoing dialysis. The Band of Hope concert brings together Ney Dimaculangan, who was the lead vocalist and writer of 6Cyclemind until 2011; Acel Bisa, who was the lead singer of Moonstar 88 until 2004; and Jason Fernandez who was the lead vocalist of Rivermaya until 2011. Concert honors Cayabyab
NATIONAL ARTIST for Music Ryan Cayabyab will be honored with a tribute concert on Sept. 21, 7 p.m., at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Ang SOAP Opera ng Buhay Ko 2: Musika ni Ryan, Medisina ng Ating Bayan (Isang Pagpupugay ng Iskolar ng Bayan sa Pambansang Alagad ng Sining), spearheaded by the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Foundation (UPMAF), features Lea Salonga, Jed Madela, Jaya, Rachel Alejandro, Pinky Marquez, Cris Villonco, Armand Ferrer, Baihana, Ryan Cayabyab Singers, the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and more for an night of all Cayabyab music. The show that aims to raise funds for the construction of the 11-storey UP Medical Sciences Building in UP Manila. Cine Europa 22
THE 22nd Cine Europa will run from Sept. 20 to 24 at Cinema 1, Greenbelt 3 in Makati City. PHILIPPINE Opera Company opens its 20th anniversary with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1994 Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning musical Passion at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, in Makati City until Sept. 29. Set in war-torn Italy in 1863, Passion tells the story of a love affair between a young soldier, a beautiful married woman, and a sickly spinster. The Quest for the Adarna
REPERTORY Philippines’s Theater for Young Audiences presents a musical retelling of the Philippine folk tale Ibong Adarna. In the kingdom of Berbania, the happy life of king, queen, and their three sons is shattered when the king falls mysteriously ill. He can only be healed by the song of the mythical bird, Adarna, which can be found in its mountain home. The three brothers take turns attempting the dangerous journey to help their father.
