Hunter Killer
AMERICAN submarine Captain Joe Glass is deep under the Arctic Ocean in search of a US submarine in distress. In the process he discovers a secret Russian plot to dismantle world order. To prevent World War 3, Captain Glass assembles Navy SEALs to rescue the Russian president. Directed by Donovan Marsh, the movie stars Gerard Butler, Gary Oldman, and Common. rogerevert.com’s Monica Castillo writes, “Butler’s performance — or lack thereof — keeps Hunter Killer from breaking any ground in the field of war movies. It’s also an odd time to release a movie that embraces collaborating with the Russians and painting bad and good guys with such broad strokes.” Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 36% rating.

PHYSICS genius Stillman is dumped by his girlfriend, so he creates a time machine and invites his wingman, Evan, to rewind time and correct every mistake in his relationship. Directed by Andrew Bowler, it stars Asa Butterfield, Sophie Turner, and Skyler Gisondo.

A TEAM of American paratroopers arrive in Nazi-occupied France tasked to destroy a radio transmitter atop a church. The soldiers are joined by a young French villager to take down the tower. However, beneath the church is a Nazi lab with enemies that outnumber them. Directed by Jules Avery, the film stars Wyatt Rusell, Mathilde Ollivier, Pilou Asbæk, and Jovan Adepo. empireonline.com’s Ben Travis writes, “It’s a fun ride, but the script isn’t knowingly silly enough to hit that so-dumb-it’s-brilliant sweet spot, and the gory denouement doesn’t conjure quite enough carnage to mask a lack of real scares.”

CELEBRITY chef Erasmus and his partner Paul are living an indulgent life. Erasmus is confronted by a grandson he never knew at a dinner party. Since the child’s father is in prison, Erasmus and his partner decide to take him in. Directed by Andrew Fleming, the film stars Paul Rudd, Steve Coogan, Jake McDorman, and Jenny Gabrielle. The New York Times’ Teo Bugbee writes, “Mr. Fleming’s gesture is clearly heartfelt, but in a film that avoids the sappiness so frequently reserved for gay domesticity in popular entertainment, it is the one sentimental sleight of hand that gives the game away.”
