AFTER its successful staging in November last year — during which it received standing ovations and mostly sold out performances — the Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home will be returning for a limited two-week run of 12 performances.
The Manila production by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group (ATEG) features a star-studded cast led by Tony award-winner Lea Salonga, and theater veterans Eric Kunze and Cris Villonco.
Fun Home is a based on the best-selling graphic memoir of the same title by Alison Bechdel where she recalls two important periods of her life — her childhood at age 10, where she struggled against her father’s demands, and her first year of college when she came out as a lesbian.
The character of Alison is portrayed by three different actresses: Ms. Villonco as the adult Alison, Mikkie Bradshaw-Volante as Medium Alison, and Katie Bradshaw and Andee Achocoso alternating as Small Alison. Ms. Salonga and Mr. Kunze play Alison’s parents.
Also in the cast are Yanah Laurel, Ronan Crisologo, Daniel Drilon, Noel Comia, Jr., Albert Silos, and Laurence Mossman.
The musical features music by Jeanine Tesori while the book and lyrics were written by Lisa Kron.
The musical had been hailed by New York Times as “the best new musical to open on Broadway.” It was also the most awarded and acclaimed musical in 2015, winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
ATEG’s Fun Home is directed by Bobby Garcia with musical direction by Ceejay Javie. — Camille Anne M. Arcilla
