OFW in Slovakia killed after defending 2 harassed women
AN overseas Filipino worker (OFW) in Slovakia died last Thursday days after being beaten up by Slovak nationals who were harassing two women, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Sunday.
The Philippine Embassy in Vienna said Henry John Acorda, 36, died at the University Hospital Ružinov of injuries he sustained after he was beaten up in a street in Bratislava, Slovakia, on May 26.
Citing local media reports, the DFA said Mr. Acorda was attacked by two men when he tried to defend two women who were being harassed. A 28-year-old Slovak man was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano vowed that those responsible for Mr. Acorda’s death would be brought to justice.
“We mourn the loss of another of our own who by all accounts is a hero who came to the rescue of the defenseless in a land that is not even his,” Mr. Cayetano said in a statement.
Mr. Acorda’s relatives have flown to Slovakia, and the Philippine Consulate in Bratislava is consulting with lawyers there on the case. — Camille A. Aguinaldo
