Olympics-bound boxer Marcial a UD winner in professional debut

By Michael Angelo S. Murillo, Senior Reporter

TOKYO Olympics-bound boxer Eumir Felix Marcial of the Philippines made it a winning professional debut as he defeated American Andrew Whitfield by unanimous decision (UD) in their four-round middleweight clash on Thursday (Manila time) in Los Angeles.

Part of his preparation for the rescheduled Olympic Games in 2021, Mr. Marcial, 25, did not disappoint in his first fight as a professional, holding his own and more on his way to the 40-36, 40-36, and 40-36 victory.

The Zamboanga native started the contest sizing up his opponent early on before picking it up as the opening round progressed to build some separation in landed punches.

He further elevated his game in the second round as he connected with head and body shots with more frequency, which took a toll on Mr. Whitfield.

The round ended with the American, also making his pro debut, nursing a swollen right eye.

Recognizing that his opponent had built some distance in points, Mr. Whitfield came out more aggressive to begin the third frame.

But the Filipino was up to the challenge and kept the gains of Mr. Whitfield to a minimum to stay comfortably ahead heading to the final round.

In the fourth and final round, Mr. Marcial spent much of the time fending off any upset from his opponent while, at the same time, adding more damage, including a solid shot to the body that had Mr. Whitfield cringing for a moment.

The final scorecard had Mr. Marcial (1-0) connecting 39% of his total punches (120-of-310) to Mr. Whitfield’s (3-2) 17% (46-of-273).

Mr. Marcial, who signed a professional deal with Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions in the middle of this year flew to the United States in October to train with famed Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach at the latter’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood with the end view of levelling up his training for the Olympics, while also beginning his journey as a professional.

MP Promotions has made it known that despite Mr. Marcial signing up with them as a professional, it is fully supportive of the boxer’s pursuit of Olympic glory, and is making sure the fighter fulfills his obligations to flag and country.

In the lead-up to the fight, MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons said if Mr. Marcial’s pro debut went well they would line up a couple of more fights to continue the fighter’s buildup for the Olympics.

Apart from Mr. Marcial, other Filipino athletes going to the Tokyo Games to date are pole-vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo, and boxer Nesthy Petecio.

The Marcial-Whitfield fight was part of a Premier Boxing Champions offering, which was held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast over FS1.

Cignal TV, Smart formally sign five-year partnership with UAAP

For the first time in two decades, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has chosen a new partner to broadcast its games. Cignal TV, the country’s #1 Pay TV provider, and one of the leading mobile services providers Smart Communications, Inc. have joined forces to shine the spotlight on the nation’s best student-athletes from the top collegiate sports league in the country.

The partnership will run until 2026 and was sealed through a contract signing held with top executives from the said institutions: PLDT Chairman and President Manuel V. Pangilinan; President and CEO, Smart Communications, Inc. and Chief Revenue Officer, PLDT Group, Alfredo S. Panlilio; Smart Communications Inc. SVP/Head, Consumer Business – Wireless Jane J. Basas; Cignal TV and TV5 President and CEO Robert P. Galang; UAAP Board Of Trustees Chairman Brother Raymundo Suplido, FSC; UAAP President Emmanuel Calanog; UAAP Vice President Fr. Aldrin Suan; UAAP Treasurer and Chairman of the Negotiating Panel Edwin Reyes; and UAAP Executive Director Rebo Saguisag. Also present to witness the signing were members of the UAAP Board of Managing Directors.

As the official Philippine broadcast partner of the UAAP, Cignal TV will broadcast the games live via  One Sports on Free-To-Air Channel, while Smart will also stream the games live through an exclusive platform to be made available to all Smart prepaid and postpaid subscribers.

“Our joint venture with the UAAP goes beyond being an official broadcast partner. Together with providing a superior viewing experience for all sports fans nationwide, we have put in place plans to help further grow the league and its athletes — giving more depth to our partnership,” said Mr. Galang in a statement.

“We are confident that this undertaking will inspire and revitalize our countrymen who have such a deep affinity for sports. From the Cignal team, and the rest of the MVP group, it is with great pleasure that we welcome the UAAP, and we are extremely excited to begin our partnership,” he added.

“Our partnership with UAAP opens a lot of groundbreaking opportunities to further expand the digital footprint of the country’s biggest collegiate league while we leverage on the strength of our Smart LTE and 5G networks to give viewers an amazing mobile streaming experience. Through the power of digital technology, we hope to inspire more Filipino youth to discover and cultivate their passion for sports and strive for excellence,” Mr. Panlilio, for his part, said.

Outside of airing the games, Cignal and Smart have committed to continuously grow the league and its athletes’ popularity through various activities within the schools. These activities ensure that the partnership nurtures and engages not only the participating athletes but also the rest of the student body in each UAAP school. Coupled with a massive consumer base of loyal subscribers and nationwide touchpoints, Cignal TV and Smart provide the UAAP a partnership that truly goes beyond broadcast.

Mr. Suplido shared, “The partnership with Cignal TV and Smart will continue to bring the UAAP closer to the students and alumni of the member schools as well as the general public. We are grateful for this opportunity to showcase and highlight UAAP’s values, especially, promoting amateur sportsmanship and the well-rounded development of our student athletes, through the various platforms of Cignal TV and Smart.”

Last week, the UAAP announced that it would postpone the events scheduled for Season 83, considering the health and safety of the student athletes. Despite these challenges posed by the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, the league, together with Cignal TV and Smart remain committed to bringing the UAAP back to its students, alumni and nationwide fan base at the earliest possible time.

Harden speaks, sheds little light on future with Rockets

AFTER reportedly looking for a way out of Houston and skipping the start of Rockets training camp, James Harden finally took questions from the media on Wednesday, while hardly clearing up what has become a sticky situation.

The eight-time All-Star finally took the court on Tuesday night for the first time under new Rockets head coach Stephen Silas. He had 12 points and four assists in 21 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs and said it felt good to be on the court again.

Whether or not he will continue to take the court for the team remains an unanswered question.

“Right now, I’m just focused on being here,” Harden said. “Today was good. Yesterday felt really good being out there for the first time since the bubble. I haven’t really had an opportunity to do a lot of five-on-five work. But for my first time being out there, I felt pretty good.”

As for his whereabouts during his early absence from training camp, Harden offered little details. He went to Las Vegas and posted pictures on social media, attending the birthday party of rapper Lil Baby in Atlanta.

“I was just training,” Harden said when asked if he was trying to make a point about being elsewhere at the start of camp.

And why were Atlanta and Las Vegas better locales than Houston?

“Just my personal trainers,” he said.

According to ESPN, Harden’s preferred trade destinations are to the Brooklyn Nets or Philadelphia 76ers. The Rockets not only have a new coach, they traded superstar Russell Westbrook to the Washington Wizards in an intriguing deal that brought back another superstar in guard John Wall.

It seems a long shot that Wall and Harden become the next tag-team duo in Houston, although Harden said Wednesday that he has not talked to new general manager Rafael Stone about the matter.

“Since I’ve been here, there’s nothing that’s been said about it,” said Harden, who did not arrive in Houston until Dec. 8, two days after training camp started. He did not set foot into camp until Monday once he was cleared to practice.

“Everybody in the locker room and the coaching staff has been focused on ramping up and preparing for the season,” Harden said. “So, that’s all that matters.”

It’s just that his trade request might hinder that focus. The Rockets won’t know who they will be this season until they get some type of closure on the subject.

“I can only focus on right now, and for me, the best James Harden is making sure I’m in shape,” Harden said. “Like I said, I hadn’t even had an opportunity to play five-on-five.

“Individual workouts, when you do individual basketball training, is great, but as every NBA player can agree, there’s nothing like five-on-five training, the physicality, making reads and things like that.”

In 11 NBA seasons, Harden has averaged 25.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 833 career games. He spent his first three seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, after becoming the No. 3 overall selection in the 2009 draft.

Capturing his third straight scoring title, Harden averaged 34.3 points with 6.6 rebounds and 7.5 assists over 68 games last season. — Reuters

English Premier League: Liverpool goes clear at top, Everton beats Leicester

LONDON — Roberto Firmino’s 90th-minute header sent Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, whose 11-match unbeaten run came to an end on Wednesday.

Tottenham began the night ahead on goal difference and will rue some golden chances after the break, but Firmino’s goal sparked joy amongst the 2,000 fans allowed in at Anfield.

Theo Walcott scored against his old club for Southampton, who moved into third spot with a 1-1 draw at struggling Arsenal who, for the second match running, ended a game with 10 men.

Everton backed-up their weekend win over Chelsea to beat fourth-placed Leicester City 2-0 away and move into fifth spot.

Sebastien Haller’s stunning bicycle kick secured a 1-1 draw for West ham United at home to Crystal Palace for whom Christian Benteke scored and was later shown a red card.

Leeds United struck three times in the last 11 minutes to sink Newcastle United 5-2 at Elland Road.

Fulham edged out of the bottom three with a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

All eyes were on Anfield though where Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham were to face the biggest test yet of their title credentials against Juergen Klopp’s champions.

A fascinating clash of styles ensued with Liverpool dominating possession, but Tottenham carving out enough chances to have ended Liverpool’s long unbeaten home run in the Premier League, which now extends to 66 matches.

Liverpool went ahead through Mohamed Salah’s deflected effort, but Tottenham levelled from their first attack when Son Heung-min raced on to Giovani Lo Celso’s through ball and drilled a shot past Alisson.

Tottenham offered more threat after the break and Steven Bergwijn burst through into the box, but his shot cannoned off the inside of the upright. Seconds later Harry Kane headed wide from a corner with the goal at his mercy.

The visitors paid dearly for their missed chances as Brazilian Firmino sent a bullet header past Hugo Lloris in the final minute of normal time.

Mourinho and Klopp had a lengthy discussion after the final whistle with the Spurs boss saying he told his Liverpool counterpart that the “better team did not win”.

“I thought he was joking, but he wasn’t,” Klopp said.

Arsenal snapped a run of four successive home league defeats as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cancelled out Walcott’s opener at the Emirates Stadium, but the hosts are now six matches without a league win and pressure is growing on manager Mikel Arteta.

He was not helped by a red card for Gabriel after he hauled down Walcott in the 62nd minute. “We showed some resilience and character to hang in there for so long against a really dangerous team,” said Arteta.

Everton have rediscovered the form that sent them to the top of the table earlier in the season.

Richarlison gave them a halftime lead and Mason Holgate doubled their advantage after the break.

“It’s been a good week. We’ve found consistency defensively and that was the reason for these two results,” Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti said.

“The season is long, but at the moment, it’s good.”

Leeds and Newcastle were locked at 2-2 after 77 minutes but goals from Stuart Dallas, Ezgjan Alioski and a cracker from Jack Harrison secured the points for Marcelo Bielsa’s vibrant side. — Reuters

FIBA confident NBA’s best players will be at next year’s Tokyo Games

BERLIN — The NBA’s best players will feature at next year’s Tokyo Olympics even though the season could end just days before the Games get under way, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said on Wednesday.

The new National Basketball Association (NBA) season will start next week, on Dec. 22, with the regular season wrapping up on May 16 before the playoffs between May 22 and July 22.

The Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed by a year to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, kick off on July 23, with the basketball preliminaries starting two days later.

“Looking at the late finish of the Orlando bubble (last season’s playoffs) and the following season, we had requested an in-depth discussion with the NBA and the NBA players association,” Mr. Zagklis said.

“We explained what the repercussions are on the Olympic qualifying tournaments and the Olympic Games,” he told a virtual round table.

He said the Olympic qualifying tournaments had been delayed by a week to late June following talks with the IOC to accommodate the late NBA season.

“I believe this means we will have at the Olympic qualifiers more than 85% of the NBA players available and all teams will have finished in time for the Games,” he said.

Since professional players were allowed to compete at the Olympics, beginning with the 1992 Games in Barcelona, the United States have won six out of seven gold medals with star-studded squads made up primarily of NBA players.

With more than 100 international players in the NBA, other countries also have concerns over availability for Olympic qualifiers and the Games themselves. — Reuters

Bucks have breathing room to grow

Giannis Antetokounmpo didn’t want to wait until the end of the 2020-21 season to decide. He still had a year to go on his contract before becoming a free agent, and he could have used the time to exert maximum pressure on the Bucks. As the reigning National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year, he certainly had the power to hold his employers — and, yes, would-be suitors — hostage. Instead of wielding it just as other stars in the same position did, however, he made it irrelevant. He went with what he thought to be right. He went with his heart.

Considering the options Antetokounmpo had, the surprise — or to be more precise, shock — that greeted his decision to re-up with the Bucks was understandable. True, no other alternative provided him with maximum earning capacity. Only by signing a supermax extension to his existing deal would he have what he now stands to earn: $228 million through 2026. Then again, money has never been his primary motivation. As he indicated when he faced scribes yesterday, he considers Milwaukee to be his second home; it would have taken a lot for him to pack his bags. “The way that this city has supported me and my family has been amazing since Day One, since the day I walked in the Cousins Center gym and Bradley Center also. It’s been amazing. I was 18. I’m 26 right now. All I know is Milwaukee,” he said.

And because Antetokounmpo affixed his Hancock on the new deal, all Milwaukee will know is him for the foreseeable future. The development is exactly what the Bucks wanted to ensure by trading for erstwhile Pelican Jrue Holiday and risking censure by prematurely angling for erstwhile King Bogdan Bogdanovic. That the latter move was scuttled, instead caused sleepless nights and threatened to derail their best-laid plans. Fortunately, their foundational piece is just as unique off the court as on it, and found their commitment to him more than enough to deserve his to them.

Has the turn of events brought the Bucks closer to a championship this season? The answer is subject to speculation and debate. After all, he did lead them to the best regular season slate over the last two years, only to fail to go deep in the playoffs. That said, his reaffirmation of ties with them eases the pressure considerably. Instead of being hard-pressed in the near term to do far more than just cast moist eyes on the hardware, they now have breathing room to grow — with him and for him. A generational talent staying in a small market. Imagine that.

US calls Switzerland, Vietnam currency manipulators

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration labeled Switzerland and Vietnam currency manipulators on Wednesday, in another parting shot at trading partners that could complicate matters for US President-elect Joe Biden’s incoming team.

In a long-overdue report, the US Treasury also added India, Thailand and Taiwan to a list of countries it says may be deliberately devaluing their currencies against the dollar.

The COVID-19 pandemic has skewed trade flows and widened US deficits with trading partners, an irritant to outgoing President Donald Trump, who won office four years ago partly on a promise to close the US trade gap.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) said it does not manipulate its currency and “remains willing to intervene more strongly in the foreign exchange market”.

Vietnam’s central bank said it would work with US authorities to ensure a “harmonious and fair” trade relationship.

“Vietnam’s foreign exchange rate policy has for years been managed in a way to contain inflation, ensure macro stability and not to create unfair trade advantage,” the State Bank of Vietnam said in a statement.

The manipulator labels will ramp up pressure on Mr. Biden before he takes over, Per Hammered, chief emerging markets strategist at SEB in Stockholm, said.

“You set the agenda and force him (Biden) into positions that he will have to get out of somehow,” Hammered said.

A US Treasury official said Mr. Biden’s transition team had not been briefed, adding: “They are not implicated in this.”

US Treasury Secretary nominee Janet Yellen could alter the findings in her first currency report, which is due in April.

A spokesman for Mr. Biden’s team did not respond to a request for comment.

The President-elect’s team has been critical of other moves by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, including ending some Federal Reserve pandemic lending programs.

Mr. Mnuchin said in a statement that the Treasury “has taken a strong step today to safeguard economic growth and opportunity for American workers and businesses.”

China, labeled by Mr. Mnuchin as a currency manipulator in August 2019 at the height of trade tensions, was kept on the Treasury’s monitoring list due to its high trade surplus with the United States.

Mr. Mnuchin lifted the designation in January, two days before the world’s two largest economies signed a “Phase 1” trade deal.

TRADE ADVANTAGE
Countries must at least have a $20 billion-plus bilateral trade surplus with the United States, foreign currency intervention exceeding 2% of gross domestic product and a global current account surplus exceeding 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) to be labeled a manipulator.

Vietnam and Switzerland far exceeded these criteria, with foreign exchange interventions of 5% and 14% of GDP respectively

The report said that at least part of Vietnam’s intervention was aimed at pushing down the dong for a trade advantage, while at least part of Switzerland’s action was aimed at pushing down the Swiss franc to prevent effective balance of payments adjustments.

The Treasury said Switzerland’s foreign exchange intervention totaled 14% of GDP.

Vietnam, which has seen foreign investment by companies seeking to avoid US tariffs on Chinese goods, saw intervention of more than 5% of its GDP, it added. (See FACTBOX)

Mark Sobel, a former Treasury and International Monetary Fund (IMF) official, said the manipulator designations were “mechanistic” interpretations of the thresholds that ignored subtleties and extenuating circumstances.

These include safe-haven inflows into Switzerland’s currency due to the pandemic and a rush of foreign investment into Vietnam in 2019, fueled by US tariffs on Chinese goods.

The IMF has forecast that Vietnam’s current account surplus will fall below the 2% of GDP threshold for 2020.

“They’re missing some more obvious cases of harmful currency practices,” said Mr. Sobel, adding that Taiwan and Thailand, which narrowly missed the intervention thresholds, “have been intervening heavily for years.”

The Treasury official said the United States will seek negotiations with Switzerland and Vietnam to bring them back below the manipulation thresholds and declined to speculate on whether the process could lead to US tariffs on their goods.

Among remedies specified in US laws governing the currency report are limiting offending countries’ access to government procurement contracts and to development finance.

Vietnam could be hit with tariffs under a separate probe by the US Trade Representative’s office into the causes of an undervalued dong that could be influenced by the Treasury report. Some business leaders fear Mr. Trump could act before a late December hearing on the issue, but a source familiar with the matter said that appeared unlikely.

Taiwan will maintain stability in its foreign exchange rate, a central bank official told Reuters after the island was placed on the on US Treasury’s currency monitoring list.

The label briefly lifted the value of the Swiss franc against the dollar. Forex strategists said the move may make it slightly more difficult for the SNB to intervene, but the easing of the coronavirus pandemic would reduce upward pressure on the franc.

The Treasury also said its “monitoring list” of countries that meet some of the criteria has hit 10, with the additions of Taiwan, Thailand and India. Others remaining on the list are China, Japan, Korea, Germany, Italy, Singapore and Malaysia.

The report said that India and Singapore had intervened in the foreign exchange market in an “asymmetric manner” but did not meet other requirements to warrant a manipulator label. — Reuters

Tokyo raises COVID-19 alert level to highest

TOKYO — The Japanese capital of Tokyo said on Thursday the strain on its medical system from the COVID-19 pandemic was severe, raising its alert level to the highest of four stages as the number of cases spiked to a record daily high of 822.

A health official said it had become difficult to balance the care of COVID-19 patients with regular ones as hospital beds filled up, assigning a “red” alert for medical preparedness for the first time.

“Medical service providers have exhausted all spare resources,” Masataka Inokuchi, vice chair of the Tokyo Medical Association, told a coronavirus monitoring committee meeting attended by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. “Reducing the number of (COVID-19) patients will be the only way to go.”

The metropolitan government said the number of coronavirus cases hit 822 on Thursday, surpassing the previous record of 678 reached a day earlier.

A month ago, the city raised its coronavirus alert for new infections — a separate category — to the highest level. It had kept its alert for medical preparedness at the second-highest level at the time, indicating a need to boost hospital capacity but a notch below critical conditions. — Reuters

Some vaccine doses kept too cold, Pfizer having manufacturing issues — officials

THE FIRST days of Pfizer, Inc.’s coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine rollout have seen unexpected hitches including some vaccines being stored at excessively cold temperatures and Pfizer reporting potential challenges in its vaccine production, US officials said on a Wednesday press call.

At least two trays of COVID-19 vaccine doses delivered in California needed to be replaced after their storage temperatures dipped below minus 80 Celsius (minus 112 Fahrenheit), US Army General Gustave Perna said on the call. Pfizer’s vaccines, made with partner BioNTech SE, are supposed to be kept at around minus 70C.

Officials are investigating whether storing the vaccines at excessively cold temperatures poses a safety or efficacy risk, he said.

Pfizer also has reported some production issues, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said.

“We will ensure that by whatever mechanism, that we provide them full support to ensure that they can produce for the American people,” Mr. Azar said.

Pfizer did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but its Chief Executive Albert Bourla told CNBC earlier this week the company was asking the US government to use the Defense Production Act to relieve some “critical supply limitations,” particularly in some components. He did not provide further details.

Officials did not outline what the specific manufacturing challenges were.

Ugur Sahin, chief executive of Pfizer’s partner BioNTech, told Reuters last week that Pfizer’s initial 2020 production target of 100 million doses was halved earlier this year in part over issues with raw materials supply. He said that has since been resolved and manufacturing has begun at scale.

Officials said Wednesday they plan to allocate 2 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine next week and 5.9 million doses of Moderna, Inc.’s, assuming it receives regulatory authorization. Moderna’s vaccine is likely to be authorized as soon as Friday, they said.

The US government is in talks with Pfizer to secure 100 million additional doses, US Operation Warp Speed chief adviser Dr. Moncef Slaoui said on the call. It had previously contracted with Pfizer for the option to buy up to 500 million additional doses at an unspecified price.

Officials said on Wednesday the United States has already contracted for 300 million vaccine doses between the Pfizer/BioNTech shot and one from Moderna in the first half of next year, and 900 million doses in total from drugmakers developing COVID-19 vaccines.

Officials said logistics companies United Parcel Services, Inc. and FedEx Corp are developing contingency plans for vaccine deliveries this week in response to forecasts of severe snowstorms in some parts of the United States. — Reuters

US charges Kenyan militant with researching 9/11-style airplane hijacking

WASHINGTON — US prosecutors said on Wednesday they had charged a Kenya-born militant with terrorism-related offenses, including conspiring to hijack aircraft for a 9/11-style attack on an American target on behalf of the Somali-based al-Shabaab militant group.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan and the US Justice Department said that Cholo Abdi Abdullah, aged 30, was arrested in the Philippines in July 2019 and transferred to the United States on Tuesday to face six federal charges related to alleged terrorism.

At a hearing held via electronic link on Wednesday morning, Abdullah told a US magistrate judge he was pleading not guilty to all of the charges. His defense lawyer agreed with the judge that Abdullah should remain in custody pending a hearing in January.

The Justice Department said Abdullah, acting at the direction of an unnamed senior al-Shabaab commander, traveled in 2016 to the Philippines to enroll in a flight school to train for a possible 9/11-style attack.

The al-Shabaab commander in question was previously responsible for planning a January 2019 attack on a hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, in which more than 20 people were killed, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that between 2017 and 2019, Abdullah attended the flight school on “various occasions” and ultimately completed tests to obtain a pilot’s license.

While training to be a pilot, Abdullah also researched how to hijack a commercial airlines flight, including how to breach a locked cockpit door from the cabin, they said. He also researched information about the tallest building in an unidentified US city and how to obtain a US visa.

Abdullah faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, but a possible maximum sentence of life. — Reuters

BDO, SM to hold first virtual ‘Pamaskong Handog 2020’ in honor of overseas Filipinos

Even amid the new normal, BDO and SM Supermalls are finding ways to continue its annual tradition of paying tribute to overseas Filipinos (OFs) and their families during the Christmas season.

The companies said that this year, the much anticipated “Pamaskong Handog” will be held as a virtual event; online but still full of star-studded guests and performers and exciting activities that Pamaskong Handog has been known for all these years.

This announcement was made today at a media teleconference, which officially launched Pamaskong Handog 2020: Sama-Sama Tayo sa Pasko.

Among those who joined the announcement were BDO Unibank Senior Vice President Genie T. Gloria, BDO Unibank Senior Vice President Jamie Nasol, BDO Network Bank Senior Vice President Karen Cua, and SM Supermalls Senior Assistant Vice President for Marketing-South Luzon Ritchie Gonzales.

Ms. Gloria of BDO said this year’s Pamaskong Handog will be streamed through Facebook live on the BDO Kabayan Facebook page and will be simulcast on the BDO Unibank YouTube channel on December 13. The event will feature Piolo Pascual, Christian Antolin, Marcelito Pomoy, Beks Batallion, and Donekla.

“Our overseas Filipinos have been through a lot this year. We hope that by keeping the tradition of Pamaskong Handog alive, even under the rules of safety, we can still give a sense of optimism, that hope that we will get through this and we will all bounce back,” said Gloria.

Apart from the celebrities joining the event, viewers from all over the world will be treated to enjoy virtual games with many prizes.

Also participating as sponsors of the Pamaskong Handog event include World Remit, MoneyGram, Western Union, and Ria Money Transfer.

The event is one of the many initiatives of BDO, which has been actively engaging with OFs and their families, as many of them depend on the Bank for their financial-related transactions.

BDO Remit has become one of the nation’s lifeblood for years and during these trying times. It provides a safe, trusted, and reliable remittance channel for millions of Filipinos. Another service, BDO Cash Agad, provides bank services in remote locations of the archipelago.

Meanwhile, BDO Network Bank, the rural bank subsidiary of BDO, takes care of the underserved and unserved customers, including the remittance beneficiaries who live in far- flung areas.

The number of OFs is estimated to number 12.5 million across more than 150 countries and continents.

As more OFs and their family members are expected to include Christmas shopping as part of their activities, SM Supermalls assured its commitment to serve the public through a safe malling experience for their needs amid the pandemic.

“Everyone was really concerned when the country went on quarantine. And since people still have to go out for their basic needs, SM Supermalls has prioritized customer safety and satisfaction with #SafetyMallingAtSM,” said Gonzales.

“We continue this practice with the utmost care given the increased operation of our malls with the lifting of the lockdowns. We make sure that each and every mall strictly follows safety and sanitation protocols that comply with government regulation to keep our malls as safe spaces,” he added.
