After the pandemic, a wave of spending by older consumers

REUTERS

THE WORLD’s emergence from the coronavirus pandemic is set to unleash a wave of spending by older consumers, with increasing opportunities for investors in aging-linked stocks.

That’s the view of money managers who see huge pent-up demand from wealthy seniors for medical services and luxury goods. They also expect that the forced adoption of the internet by older people during lockdown will open up this demographic permanently to e-commerce companies and social networks.

The number of people aged 65 and over is projected to double to more than 1.5 billion by 2050, greatly increasing their economic impact. The total spending power of the older population globally was about $8.4 trillion in 2020, according to World Data Lab. That’s expected to grow to $14 trillion over the next decade.

“The pandemic has accelerated many of the issues related to aging populations and has highlighted the urgency of resolving them,” said Christopher Rossbach, chief investment officer at J. Stern & Co. “We think they will be significant drivers for growth and investment.”

Underpinning the thesis are global fertility rates that are forecast to keep falling as life expectancy rises, even as the virus takes a staggering human toll. China’s decision last month to allow three-child families may have only limited impact on the aging trend in the most populous country.

Here are some key focuses of investors who argue that the aging theme will be even more important as economies move past the pandemic.

MEDICAL DEMAND
From cancer screening to hip replacements and cataract surgery, countless medical procedures have been postponed since the virus took hold. As this changes, global health-care spending is projected to bounce back in 2021, rising 5.8% to $8.8 trillion, according to IHS Markit.

Mr. Rossbach expects shares of medical device manufacturers to benefit and cited Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., Medtronic Plc, Becton Dickinson & Co. and Alcon, Inc.

Shares of all four companies have underperformed the global stock benchmark so far this year, with US-listed Becton Dickinson down 3% versus the MSCI AC World Index’s 11% gain.

Mirabaud Asset Management Ltd. also likes Medtronic, as well as Edwards Lifesciences Corp. for exposure to the cardiovascular diseases sector, said global equities head Anu Narula.

Medical device makers have lagged the global stock gauge this year.

Hearing aids are another market hurt by fewer in-person consultations, with Morgan Stanley estimating sales will normalize this year, following a 15% decline in the market in 2020. Among businesses in this field, it has an overweight recommendation on Copenhagen-listed GN Store Nord A/S and equal-weight on Demant A/S, which have both surged this year.

“The large contingent of developed countries that have universal health coverage is being joined by an increasing number of developing markets that are establishing and/or expanding universal health-care systems, especially in emerging Asian markets,” said Mirabaud’s Mr. Narula.

LUXURY, TRAVEL
As well as long-delayed holidays, the travel sector is poised to pick up with support from cashed-up seniors. “Older or richer people tend to want to visit relatives more,” said Sanjiv Bhatia, founder of Pembroke Emerging Markets.

Mr. Rossbach also has his eye on a rebound in luxury spending, with LVMH and liquor makers Pernod Ricard SA and Diageo Plc among his preferred reopening bets. “A general point is that as people age their purchasing power increases and they become more concerned with quality, not quantity, of their consumption,” he said.

INSURANCE
Insurers stand to benefit too, as a surge in unplanned early retirements since the emergence of COVID-19 raises awareness of unforeseen health and employment risks.

Strategists at Credit Suisse Group AG expect growth potential for insurers, particularly in markets with relatively low penetration such as China.

Juliana Hansveden, a fund manager at Nordea Asset Management, sees insurance, medical and the internet all coming together to create investment opportunities.

She is expressing confidence in the theme with a bet on loss-making Ping An Healthcare & Technology Co., which is helping patients in China avoid long waiting time at hospitals by providing online medical consultations. It is also working with parent company Ping An Insurance Group Co. to bundle its health-care offering with insurance policies, she said.

J. Stern’s Mr. Rossbach expects growth across the board for companies that can tap seniors and their new-found confidence online.

“Think of all the parents and grandparents who have used social networks or video conferencing apps for the first time to stay in touch with their loved ones, or have bought their first products through e-commerce or ordered their groceries or meals through delivery services,” he said. — Bloomberg

PHL Azkals finish Asian Cup 2nd round qualifiers campaign

THE PHILIPPINE Azkals finish their joint FIFA-AFC qualifiers bid against Maldives on Tuesday. — THE AZKALS/PHILIPPINE FOOTBALL FEDERATION

THE Philippine national men’s football team finishes its campaign in the second round of the joint 2022 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup and 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Qualifiers bid on Tuesday in the United Arab Emirates.

The Azkals (3-1-3), currently third in Group A with 10 points and already assured of a spot in the next round of the Asian Cup, look to finish their bid on a high note in taking on Maldives at 11 p.m. (Manila time) at the Sharjah Stadium.

They strengthened their place in the next round of the qualifiers in the Asian Championship by defeating Guam, 3-0, on June 11.

Goals from Angel Guirado and Mark Hartmann, and an own goal by Guam, towed the nationals to the win, which served as a bounce back from their 0-2 loss to China three days prior.

Veteran Guirado broke through for the Azkals in the 12th minute.

The Philippines tried to add on to its lead, but the defense of Guam would hold up, leaving the Azkals to settle foro a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Philippine footballers stayed aggressive in their attack and were rewarded with a “bonus” when Guam was assessed with an own goal when the header of Filipino-American Mark Winhoffer hit Guamanian player Marcus Lopez before finding the net in the 59th minute.

Mr. Hartmann scored in the 88th minute to complete the 3-0 victory.

While they took the win, Azkals coach Scott Cooper admitted the team could have played better and said he hopes in their next game, the players would be more consistent in their play.

“I think, maybe we gave ourselves more problems than Guam gave us, to be honest. We managed to finally score two goals from set-pieces and we’re pleased with the result, but the performance was patchy,” Mr. Cooper was quoted as saying by the official AFC website.

“For five or 10 minutes, we played well and then for another five or 10 minutes, we didn’t play so well. I’m not happy with that. We can’t have those periods where we’re in and out of trouble.”

The Azkals are now through to the third round of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers to be played from November this year to June 2022.

They, however, are out of the running for a spot in the third round of the World Cup qualifiers, which is now with Group A-leading Syria (7-0-0, 21 points) and possibly China (5-1-1, 16 points) as one of the best runners-up.

Maldives (2-0-5) is fourth in the grouping with six points while Guam (0-0-8) is last with no points to show for.

The Philippines-Maldives game will be shown live over One Sports and One Sports+.

Execration exacts payback on Blacklist, captures Mobile Legends Southeast Asia title

EXECRATION won the 2021 MLBB Southeast Asia Cup (MSC) title on Sunday and the team did it at the expense of previous conqueror Blacklist International.

An all-Filipino finals affair, Execration completed an upset of Mobile Legends Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League-Philippines Season 7 champion Blacklist, winning, 4-1, to be crowned ML champ in Southeast Asia this year.

Execration saw the rug pulled from under it by Blacklist in the MLBB-Philippines finals late last month, losing, 3-4.

In their championship reengagement, Execration made sure there would be no repeat of that, staying the course when it got the momentum to book the championship and exact payback.

Blacklist drew first blood in their best-of-seven final, winning a low-scoring series-opener behind Danerie James “Wise” Del Rosario’s Brody.

The match would be levelled by Execration in Game Two before it fashioned out an impressive charge back in Game Three to take a 2-1 lead.

Blacklist held sway in the early goings of Game Four until Execration’s Grant “Kelra” Duane Pillas stepped up with his Lunox to give his squad momentum in a team fight which they eventually won.

A win away from the title, Execration went for the closeout in Game Five, led anew by Kelra.

For his steady performance in the tournament, Kelra was adjudged 2021 MSC most valuable player.

Making Execration’s title conquest all the more impressive was that they came from the lower bracket and made their way up.

Execration, which also has members Renz “Renzio” Errol Cadua, Patrick “E2MAX” James Caidic, Kiel “Kielvj” VJ Hernandez, Joshua “Ch4knu” Mangilog, and Billy ”Z4pnu” Jazha Alfonso, became the second team from the Philippines to with the MSC after Bren Esports (then known as Aether Main) bagged the title in 2018. — Michael Angelo S. Competing teams arrive in FIBA Clark City ‘bubble’

TEAMS seeing action in the third and final window of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup Qualifiers this week began to make their way to the “bubble” at Clark City in Angeles, Pampanga, on Sunday.

First to arrive were the Korean and Philippine national teams, with five more squads due to follow suit later on Sunday and Monday. The teams will play in two groups in the competition scheduled for June 16 to 20.

Officials of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) and Clark Development Corp. (CDC) were physically present at the Quest Hotel in Mimosa to welcome the arrival of Team Korea and Gilas Pilipinas while executives of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) virtually witnessed it.

The BCDA and CDC expressed excitement over the event finally taking place after being postponed twice early this year. They, too, hope that the qualifiers would be the first of more international competitions they get to host and portent of the return to some form of normalcy.

“This is the first international sporting event since we went through this very difficult time. Seeing Gilas Pilipinas compete here at home is such a welcome sight and gives us so much hope that we are towards the tailend of this difficult time,” said BCDA President and Chief Executive Officer Vince Dizon in the media briefing at the teams’ arrival.

The SBP shared the same thrill and that it is looking forward to the successful staging of the FIBA window.

“We cannot overemphasize our gratitude for (BCDA and CDC’s) valuable support to make this event take place after a couple of earlier postponements because of the challenges of the pandemic. But through your kind and strong assistance, finally we are here,” SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios said.

The third window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers was originally to take place in February but was postponed weeks before because of the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus which resulted in the government raising safety restrictions for in-bound visitors.

Qatar stepped up to host the event but it, too, had to cancel last minute because of coronavirus concerns.

SBP took it as an opportunity to push through with its hosting plans and eventually got the FIBA nod to host the remaining matches in Groups A and B.

For the competition at hand, the organizers are drawing from their experience in the successful holding of the Philippine Basketball Association bubble last year.

They are coordinating with all concerned national and local government agencies and have aligned their efforts as well to those set up by FIBA.

In the Clark bubble, the movement of players, coaches and staff will be limited to within the airport, hotels and the Angeles University Foundation Sports and Cultural Center where the tournament will be held. Designated hotels are Quest Hotel & Conference Center and the Lohas Hotel in Redwood Villas, both in the Clark Freeport Zone.

Foreign participants are required to take RT-PCR tests 12 days, seven days and two days before departure to the Philippines. They must also secure RT-PCR tests on the day of arrival, four days after arrival, and before departure if required by the country of destination.

Members of the Gilas Pilipinas are covered by the protocols. And so do FIBA and SBP personnel, hotel, transport and ancillary staff, and other staff from TV5, PLDT and Smart, who are official partners of FIBA.

In case a bubble participant tests positive for the coronavirus, the individual would immediately be isolated and undergo a confirmatory test a day after. Contact tracing would be conducted within a few hours after detection.

Apart from the Philippines and Korea, also seeing action in the FIBA bubble are China, Chinese-Taipei, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

Calendar Grand Slam possible this year, says Djokovic

PARIS — For the second time in six years, Novak Djokovic is halfway to a calendar year sweep of all four Grand Slam titles after winning the French Open for a second time on Sunday.

The 34-year-old dug deep into his reserves of resilience to hit back from two sets down against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas to win (6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4) and increase his Grand Slam tally to 19.

That takes him only one behind the men’s record 20 held by Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer and there is nothing to suggest the world number one will not surpass his two career rivals.

He can already claim something neither of those two can, after his win over the 22-year-old Tsitsipas made him the first player in the professional era to win each of the four Grand Slams at least twice.

Having already claimed the Australian Open this year, he has a shot at becoming the first man to win all four majors in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969 and he could even complete a ‘Golden Slam’ by adding the Olympic title in Tokyo.

“Everything is possible,” Djokovic told reporters.

“I’ve achieved some things that a lot of people thought it would be not possible for me to achieve. Everything is possible, and I did put myself in a good position to go for the Golden Slam. But, you know, I was in this position in 2016 as well.

“It ended up in a third-round loss in Wimbledon.”

Wimbledon returns later this month after last year’s tournament was canceled because of the pandemic.

Djokovic won it in 2019 and will be the favorite to add a sixth title on the grass, after which he will turn his thoughts to the Olympic Games and the US Open.

“Obviously, I will enjoy this win and then think about Wimbledon in a few days’ time. I don’t have an issue to say that I’m going for the title in Wimbledon,” he said.

“Of course I am. I won in ‘18 and ‘19 there. Hopefully, I can keep that run going.”

As far as chasing down Federer and Nadal, Djokovic said he has always considered it a possibility despite the fact that when he won his second Grand Slam title at the 2011 Australian Open, Nadal had nine and Federer was on 16.

“I never thought it was a mission impossible to reach the Grand Slams of these guys,” Djokovic said. “I mean, I’m not there, but it’s one less. But they are still playing.

“Obviously, they’re playing great, especially Rafa with his level. We all have still opportunities at Wimbledon, all the other slams. I’ll keep on going. I’ll keep on chasing. At the same time, I’ll keep on paving my own path.”

His long-time coach Marian Vajda joked after Sunday’s comeback win that he and Goran Ivanisevic, who is also part of the team, would retire if Djokovic won the calendar Slam.

“I think it is possible, much more possible. He loves to play in Wimbledon and US Open,” he told reporters. “As much as Novak is healthy, and he’s healthy right now, he’s in great shape, I think he has ability to win the Grand Slam for this year. I’m pretty sure.”

It did not look likely when Djokovic trailed by two sets against an inspired Tsitsipas on Sunday — the effort of beating Nadal in a seismic semifinal appearing to catch up on him.

But Djokovic said some words of wisdom from a young fan helped him out.

“I don’t know the boy. He was in my ear the entire match basically, especially when I was two sets to love down. He was encouraging me. He was actually giving me tactics,” Djokovic, who presented the excited fan with his racket at the end, said.

“He was like, ‘hold your serve, get an easy first ball, then dictate, go to his backhand.’ He was coaching me literally. I found that very cute, very nice.” — Reuters

Suns close out Nuggets with sweep as Nikola Jokić ejected

CHRIS Paul scored 37 points, Devin Booker had 34 points and 11 rebounds, and the visiting Phoenix Suns beat the Denver Nuggets (125-118) on Sunday night to sweep the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series.

Nuggets star Nikola Jokić, the NBA MVP, was given a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected late in the third quarter. He finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Mikal Bridges scored 14 points, Deandre Ayton had 12 points and Jae Crowder had 10 rebounds and four blocks to go with nine points for the Suns, who reached the conference finals for the first time in 11 years.

Will Barton had 25 points, Michael Porter, Jr. scored 20, Monte Morris finished with 19 and Facu Campazzo 14 for Denver.

The Nuggets struggled in the third quarter of the first three games but came out strong after half time on Sunday night. Porter hit a 3-pointer to help cut an eight-point deficit to 71-70 with 7:46 left.

Things turned soon after Paul made a trio of midrange jumpers to keep Phoenix in the lead, and after Ayton’s alley-oop on a pass from Booker put the Suns ahead 83-75, tempers flared.

Jokić missed a 12-footer and then took a hard swipe at the ball after Cameron Payne got the rebound. Booker went chest-to-chest with Jokić as officials, players and coaches separated the two. Jokić was hit with the Flagrant 2 foul and was ejected with 3:52 left.

He went over and shook Payne’s hand as he left the court.

Phoenix quickly built a 15-point lead and led 96-83 heading into the fourth quarter.

Denver showed some fight after that, cutting the lead to 99-93 on a 3-pointer by Porter. Barton hit another from deep and JaVale McGee split a pair of free throws to make it 101-97. The Suns built the lead back up to eight with 5:15 left.

Paul converted a three-point play and had a steal and a layup to make it 114-103 and Phoenix closed it out.

Phoenix led by as many as 10 in the first half, saw the Nuggets close within two, and led 63-55 half time lead. — Reuters

Bucks even series with Nets as Kyrie Irving injured

GIANNIS Antetokounmpo collected 34 points and 12 rebounds as the host Milwaukee Bucks rolled to a 107-96 victory Sunday in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals over the Brooklyn Nets, who lost All-Star guard Kyrie Irving to a sprained right ankle.

The series is tied at two games apiece and Game 5 is Tuesday in Brooklyn. Although X-rays of Irving’s ankle were negative, his availability for the remainder of the series is uncertain.

The Bucks followed up winning a defensive struggle in Game 3 on Thursday to assure the series will last at least six games.

Antetokounmpo matched his playoff-high scoring game in this postseason by shooting 14 of 26 from the field. He scored 12 points in the decisive third quarter, when the Bucks took control.

Khris Middleton followed up his 35-point showing from Game 3 by adding 19 points and eight assists as the Bucks made 44.3 percent of their shots and hit 16 3-pointers. This came after they had managed to make only 22.7 percent (20-of-88) from behind the arc in the first three games of the series.

Jrue Holiday added 14 points and nine assists and P.J. Tucker chipped in 13 when he was not shadowing Kevin Durant defensively.

Durant totaled 28 points and 13 boards but the Nets gradually fell apart after Irving was injured on a layup with 6:04 remaining left in the second quarter. Irving fell to the floor in pain after awkwardly stepping on Antetokounmpo’s foot following a made layup.

Durant struggled against Tucker’s physicality, making only 9 of 25 shots, including just 1-for-8 3-point attempts. The Nets committed 17 turnovers.

Irving finished with 11 points in his 17 minutes of action, as no other Net reached double figures in their third straight game with James Harden watching from the sidelines due to right hamstring tightness.

The Nets led early, building an 11-point lead before the Bucks rallied. Milwaukee went on a 21-4 surge, and Irving’s injury occurred soon after Antetokounmpo’s dunk put Milwaukee ahead for good at 37-36. From there, the Bucks gradually pulled away.

Milwaukee held a 53-48 lead at half time, surged to a 74-57 lead on a 3-pointer by Bryn Forbes with 3:37 left in the third quarter. When Middleton hit a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds on the clock they carried an 81-69 lead into the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee took a 97-78 edge with about seven minutes left on a 3-pointer by Holiday and finished off when Antetokounmpo’s dunk made it 101-84 with 3:46 left and in the final minutes, chants of “Bucks in Six” were heard from the sellout crowd of 16,310. — Reuters

French Open organizers defend Osaka handling, say ‘can do better’ on mental health

PARIS — French Open organizers defended their handling of the Naomi Osaka situation on Sunday but accepted that the governing bodies need to do better on mental health issues following the Japanese player’s exit from the Grand Slam over her media boycott.

Osaka announced in the build-up to the French Open that she would not attend the mandatory post-match press conferences for players, saying the questioning by journalists impacts her mental well-being.

The four-time Grand Slam winner stuck to her stance and did not face the media after her opening win, leading to a $15,000 fine and a strongly-worded letter from the board of the four Grand Slam tournaments warning her of possible expulsion from Roland Garros and future majors.

Japan’s Osaka ended the stand-off with the French tennis federation (FFT) by withdrawing from the claycourt major after winning her first round match, explaining she had been suffering from depression for almost three years.

FFT director general Amelie Oudea-Castera said the organizers tried to reach out to Osaka several times without success and the statement from the four majors was to just remind her of the consequences of her decision.

“On the $15,000 fine, you noticed we did not want to put that fine at the maximum. Maximum was 20,” Oudea-Castera told reporters. “On purpose, we only wanted to be at 15 because we wanted to send a message that we wouldn’t go to a default right away.

“I think we really cared for her. We really tried to engage. We were pragmatic in the way we handled the progressive approach to sanctions. It was a very sensitive and difficult situation, but we believe we really treated that with respect, with care.

“And yes, of course, on mental health, we can do better. This is part of the roadmap we have with the other slams. We will take the initiative on the matter together.”

The world number two’s withdrawal, however, subjected the four Grand Slams to criticism from fans and pundits for their handling of the matter.

FFT president Gilles Moretton said they “had to do it.”

“We need to have equity between all the players… I think we did it the right way,” he said.

“Now, we want only one thing: she will recover as soon as possible and maybe, she will be in very good shape and ready to talk to you (media) at Wimbledon. We’ll be very happy for that.” — Reuters

Netherlands edges out Ukraine in five-goal thriller

AMSTERDAM — The Netherlands made an emphatic return to major tournament football by snatching a 3-2 win over Ukraine on Sunday in a thrilling Euro 2020 match after they looked to have thrown away a two-goal lead.

Defender Denzel Dumfries headed the winner in the 85th minute after Ukraine had clawed their way back into the game from two goals down thanks to a stunning curled strike from Andriy Yarmolenko and a Roman Yaremchuk header.

The Dutch had dominated large parts of the frenetic Group C match and deservedly went in front in the 52nd minute when captain Georginio Wijnaldum smashed a loose ball high into the net and striker Wout Weghorst doubled the advantage six minutes later with a scrappy finish.

Dumfries had wasted a glaring chance to score the opening goal late in the first half when he missed the target with a glancing header, but he more than made amends with his late strike, helped by erratic goalkeeping by Ukraine’s Georgi Bushchan. — Reuters

As the West goes, so go Filipino consumers online — study

Image via Crocs

Crocs, Yeezy sneakers, green hair dye, and cryptocurrency are among the trends that piqued the online interest of Filipino consumers following coverage from Western media, according to a study conducted May 2019 to April 2021 by Southeast Asian e-commerce aggregator iPrice Group.

These trends were observed by tracking the Google search volume of products that became popular in the West after being endorsed by Hollywood brand ambassadors and influencers.

The study showed that the Philippines had the highest search volume of the focus keywords out of all of Southeast Asia, indicating thsway of Western pop culture over Filipinos versus citizens of neighboring countries.

CAUSING COMEBACKS AND TRENDS
A product that crossed the ocean to Philippine shores was Crocs, which revived its brand in 2020. In July, the footwear brand collaborated with Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), causing a surge in their media coverage and sales in the United States. In the Philippines that same month, iPrice saw a 121% spike in Google searches for the shoe brand compared to January.

Further driving its upward trajectory were collaborations with rapper-songwriter Bad Bunny, celebrity Justin Bieber, musician Post Malone, and actress Priyanka Chopra, all spread throughout the year. This onslaught of Western coverage caused Filipinos’ Google searches for Crocs to peak at 210,000 at the end of the year, a 185% rise from the start of the year.

Meanwhile, iPrice reported that the jump in search volumes from Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia weren’t as big. Google searches for Crocs in Indonesia, for example, only reached over 37,000 despite the country having more than thrice the Philippines’ Google population.

Another product that got attention from both Americans and Filipinos was green hair dye. Thanks to Grammy-winning popstar Billie Eilish, searches in the Philippines rose by 72% after she dyed her roots green and appeared on the cover of Elle magazine in September 2019.

Each time the green-haired singer released content, Filipinos’ searches would spike. Before March 2020, she appeared on the Oscars and the cover of Vogue magazine, and by that month, iPrice saw searches increase by 141% compared to January.

As in the case of Crocs, the rest of Southeast Asia didnt Google green hair dye as much as the Philippines did, which iPrice cited as proof of the West’s clout over online consumers in the country. Ms. Eilish was supposed to tour in Manila in September 2020, but the concert was canceled due to the pandemic, a crushing blow to many of her fans in the country.

THE POWER OF CELEBRITY
When it comes to celebrity influence, Kanye West was also popular among Filipinos. He released his Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Yeezreel sneakers in December 2019, causing a 132% spike in searches compared to January. This also occurred in December 2020, when Yeezy searches rose 37% from the start of 2020 after the Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Bred announcement.

This kind of effect wasn’t just limited to brands. Cryptocurrency, already a hot ticket all over the world, was mentioned by Mr. West in Joe Rogan’s podcast in October 2020, which grabbed Filipinos’ interest as seen in their Google searches increasing by 53% since.

In the first few months of 2021, several celebrities drew attention to the digital currency, from mentions by JayZ and Paris Hilton, an announcement of Snoop Dogg’s non-fungible token (NFT) collection, to Tesla purchasing over a billion dollars’ worth of bitcoin. By April, there was a rise in Filipinos’ cryptocurrency searches by 542% compared to October 2020.

However, it’s possible that cryptocurrencies were already becoming a hot market globally regardless of the celebrity influence. iPrice reported that the search volume for crypto in other Southeast Asian nations was also high. According to iPricethe spikes in Filipinos’ searches coinciding with major media coverage in the West demonstrates the influence of Western pop culture on the country’s online consumer population. — Brontë H. Lacsamana

The Google search volume was taken from Google Keyword Planner, from the period of May 2019 to April 2021. “Crocs,” “Yeezy,” “cryptocurrency,” and “green hair dye” were the keywords used to obtain the search volume. Events from Western influencers were taken from external sources.

PhilSA inks agreements to enhance space industry

Image via NASA

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSAsigned agreements on space cooperation with the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on June 4 and June 11, respectively, to strengthen the institutions’ shared commitment to the peaceful uses of outer space.

“When we build space technologies, we create opportunities to fortify local industrial capabilities, such as those needed to build difficult, differentiated products that work in harsh environments with high reliability,” PhilSA director general Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr., told BusinessWorld in an email interview. “When we mobilize or use space-enabled data or information, we promote evidence-based policies that lead to better governance, productive communities, and inclusive development.”

Under their memorandum of agreement (MOU)PhilSA and UNOOSA will explore opportunities for:

  • Joint capacity-building activities at the national level to enhance the use of space science and technology for socio-economic development, particularly in line with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Using space-based information for disaster risk reduction and emergency response through the UN Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN SPIDER) program;
  • Expanding mutual collaboration on activities related to international space law; and
  • Securing collaboration for joint public awareness and education outreach initiatives on the importance of space science and technology for socio-economic development.

PhilSA will cascade these efforts and activities to the local industry, the private sector, enterprises, and startups, by shining a spotlight on opportunities to take part in the global space industry and economy, and fostering better awareness of issues concerning the responsible and sustainable use and exploitation of outer space,” Mr. Marciano said.

JAPAN COLLAB
PhilSA signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) with JAXA to explore opportunities for collaboration in the areas of space applications; satellite development; space environment utilization; capacity-building for space-related technology development; space science and exploration; and the promotion of the space industry.

Japan is the first country to have signed an agreement with PhilSA, and the MOC opens doors for further discussions in the area.

“[The Philippines and Japan] already have accumulated experiences in space cooperation,” said Hiroshi Yamakawa, JAXA president, citing the areas of satellite deployment and remote sensing data, particularly in disaster risk reduction. “There are so many areas of [possible] collaboration in the future.”

The Philippines, through the Department of Science and Technology, collaborated with Japanese universities in the successful development and launch of the Philippines’ first microsatellites, Diwata-1 and Diwata-2, and the nanosatellites Maya-1 and Maya-2. Its recently completed Maya-3 and Maya-4, the first Philippine university-built nanosatellites, were turned over to JAXA this April and are set to be launched this year.

DISASTER RESILIENCE
Disaster resilience is one of the most important uses of satellite data in the Philippines. It was used to evaluate the extent of the Taal Volcano’s ashfall when it erupted in 2020, and also to monitor the drought that hit Occidental Mindoro in 2019.

Optical imagery from Diwata-2 was also used to determine the relationship between air quality and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases: cities in the National Capital Region with high levels of nitrogen dioxide, a gaseous pollutant from cars that burn fossil fuels, also had a high number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.

One target of cooperation is to further strengthen our in-country capabilities in the use of space-based information  satellite images, in particular  in all phases of the disaster management cycle. This cycle ranges from risk reduction or mitigation, preparedness, and response to recovery,” said Mr. Marciano in the same interview. “We emphasize not just the use, but also the importance of endogenous capacity to generate, process, and attune space-enabled information for our purposes.” (Emphasis Mr. Marciano’s.)

The agency can aid local government units and other agencies in this regard by providing access to complementary sources of data and tools, as well as relevant training that disseminate its current know-how.
