Alex Eala partners with Indonesian Janice Tjen in Abu Dhabi doubles

ALEX EALA (L) and Janice Tjen — FACEBOOK.COM/WTA

FROM rivals to teammates.

Filipina pride Alexandra “Alex” Eala and Indonesian standout Janice Tjen join forces in championing Southeast Asian (SEA) tennis with a doubles partnership in the prestigious WTA 500 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open.

The 23-year-old Ms. Tjen beat the 20-year-old Ms. Eala, 6-4, 6-1, in the WTA 250 Sao Paulo Open quarterfinals in Brazil last year for their first encounter in the professional women’s circuit after their junior and ITF years as almost the same batch.

That run made Ms. Tjen the first Indonesian semifinalist in the WTA Tour, just months after Ms. Eala became the first Filipina WTA semifinalist in the Miami Open.

Since then, both SEA stars have etched their own marks and reached new career-high rankings. Pending this week’s update after the Australian and Philippine Women’s Open, Ms. Eala is now at No. 49 and Ms. Tjen at No. 69.

They were in collision course for a gold medal match in last month’s SEA Games in Thailand if not for the retirement of Ms. Tjen in the semifinals due to breathing issue, paving the way for home bet Mananchaya Sawangkaew’s finals entry via walkover. Ms. Eala then beat Ms. Sawangkaew in the finale, 6-1, 6-2, to deliver the country’s first women’s tennis gold since 1999.

This time, they will be on the same end of the court against Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez (doubles No. 68) and Kristina Mladenovic of France (doubles No. 49).

Game time is still to be determined on Wenesday depending on the results of the singles campaigns by the said players.

Ms. Eala was to play WTA No. 112 Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey, her former doubles partner, while Ms. Tjen was to clash against WTA No. 31 Maya Joint of Australia.

Mses. Eala and Tjen are ranked lower in the doubles play at No. 135 and No. 67, respectively, but should have enough motivation to fly the flags of not only their nation but the entire region higher in the tennis world dominated by the Europeans.

“I think the SEA level is really there as you can see. It creates a really good atmosphere,” said Ms. Eala on SEA representation during her historic home tournament at the Philippine Women’s Open last week.

Ms. Tjen was supposed to play in the same tourney inspired by Ms. Eala if not for a second-round campaign in the Australian Open after stunning singles No. 23 Ms. Fernandez, 6-2, 7-6(7-1).

Ms. Eala in the same tourney bowed to WTA No. 99 Alycia Parks of the United States, 6-0, 2-6, 3-6. — John Bryan Ulanday

Free agent recruiters Farm Fresh, Nxled clash in PVL All-Filipino

NXLED CHAMELEONS — ONE SPORTS/RM CHUA

Games on Tuesday
(FilOil Arena)
4 p.m. – Farm Fresh vs Nxled
6:30 p.m. – ZUS Coffee vs Capital1

NXLED and Farm Fresh, two of the teams that benefitted the most in the wild pre-season free agent-recruiting spree, get to display their newfound acquisitions as they collide on Tuesday in the PVL All-Filipino Conference at the FilOil Arena.

The Chameleons, who practically absorbed the bulk of the on-leave Petro Gazz team that ruled this same conference and the Reinforced last year headed by Brooke Van Sickle, battle the Foxies, who also had their shares of prized acquisitions, at 4 p.m.

Aside from Ms. Van Sickle, other popular former Angels who jumped ship were MJ Phillips, Myla Pablo, Jonah Sabete, Jules Tolentino and Bang Pineda among others.

Two more key additions for the fledgling franchise were Aby Maraño from the defunct Chery Tiggo and Aduke Ogunsanya from Choco Mucho.

They joined a team that already has EJ Laure, Chiara Permentilla and Krich Macaslang.

The only problem Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti faces right now is how he would utilize his loaded squad that has a whopping total of 27 players in its fold.

“It’s a pleasant problem that I’m sure we’ll solve,” said the Italian strategist.

For Farm Fresh, it did not only pick big names like Mylene Paat and Ara Galang from Chery Tiggo, Royse Tubino from Choco Mucho and Remy Palma from Petro Gazz but also netted a championship-tested coach in Japanese Koji Tsuzurabara, who steered the Angels to the AFC crown a season back.

Also expected to make a big splash to open up their respective campaigns are ZUS Coffee and Capital1, which tackle each other at 6:30 p.m. — Joey Villar

TNT Tropang 5G will be wiser, better in the Commissioner’s Cup

“SECOND today, stronger tomorrow.”

With those words, the TNT Tropang 5G signed off from the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup and vowed to be wiser, better in the next battles.

The Tropang 5G settled for runner-up honors behind back-to-back titlist San Miguel Beermen (SMB) after their fightback from 21 points down fell short in a 77-92 loss in Sunday’s Game 6.

The pain stung most for Calvin Oftana, who nearly spearheaded the Tropang 5G’s spirited rally that actually propelled them to a 68-66 upper hand in the third before the Beermen wrested control back and ran away to triumph.

Mr. Oftana was emotional after his 28-point effort and their bid to send SMB into a Game 7 sudden death went down the drain.

But like any other player with a winning mentality, the TNT gunslinger is ready to charge this one to experience and come back stronger with his championship-caliber team.

The succeeding tournament, the Commissioner’s Cup, set for a March 11 opening, will see the Tropang 5G defending the title they won from Barangay Ginebra last season. — Olmin Leyba

OG Anunoby, New York Knicks pull away from Los Angeles Lakers

OG ANUNOBY scored seven of his team-high 25 points during a decisive run to end the third quarter, and the surging New York Knicks pulled away from the visiting Los Angeles Lakers to earn a 112-100 win on Sunday night.

Anunoby added eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Knicks, who have won six straight since a 2-9 skid.

Karl-Anthony Towns (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Jalen Brunson (12 points, 13 assists) each recorded double-doubles while Landry Shamet scored 23 points off the bench. Starter Josh Hart added 20 points.

Luka Dončić, the NBA’s leading scorer, had 30 points and tied a season-high with 15 rebounds for the Lakers, who fell to 4-3 on their season-long eight-game Grammys road trip. Dončić also had 15 rebounds in a 112-108 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 7.

LeBron James had 22 points, five rebounds and six assists while Deandre Ayton had 13 points. Rui Hachimura added 11 points off the bench. The teams combined for 15 lead changes and six ties before the Knicks took control late in the third.

The Lakers led by as many as nine in the first before taking 33-27 lead at the end of the quarter. The Knicks led once in the second at 45-44 before Los Angeles ended the quarter on a 12-7 run to take a 56-52 lead.

Dončić hit a 3-pointer with 3:45 left in the third to give the Lakers their last lead at 77-75. After four straight empty trips, Towns’ steal of a Dončić pass led to Anunoby’s game-tying dunk. Anunoby then picked off Gabe Vincent’s pass and put the Knicks ahead for good with another dunk. — Reuters

EU must push for ‘Made in Europe’ strategy, EU industry chief says

REUTERS

EUROPE needs to protect its own industries with a “Made in Europe” strategy, EU industry chief Stephane Sejourne said in a newspaper article published on Sunday evening, co-signed by more than 1,100 CEOs and other business leaders.

“Without an ambitious, effective and pragmatic industrial policy, the European economy is doomed to be just a playground for its competitors,” Ms. Sejourne said in the article that was published in newspapers across Europe.

“We must establish, once and for all, a genuine European preference in our most strategic sectors,” the French member of the European Commission said.

Ms. Sejourne’s opinion piece comes ahead of the proposed implementation of the Commission’s Industrial Accelerator Act later this month, which will likely set requirements to prioritize locally manufactured products.

The proposal is an attempt to boost European industries in the face of cheaper imports from China, but has split EU countries.

Governments including France are championing the idea, but others, including Sweden and the Czech Republic, warn that “buy local” requirements could deter investment, raise prices in government tenders and hurt the EU’s competitiveness globally.

Ms. Sejourne said Europe’s best answer “can be summed up in three words”: ‘Made in Europe’.

“The Chinese have ‘Made in China’, the Americans have ‘Buy American’, and most other economic powers have similar schemes, that give preference to their own strategic assets. So why not us?” he said.

Tens of thousands of transport workers walk off job in Germany

FREEPIK

BERLIN — Commuters across Germany faced freezing temperatures and empty platforms on Monday as tens of thousands of public transport workers walked off the job in a strike called by trade union Verdi, shutting down bus and tram services in most cities.

Verdi, which represents nearly 100,000 transport workers, called the strike after talks with municipal and state employers over working conditions stalled last week.

The union is demanding shorter shifts, longer rest breaks and higher pay for night and weekend work even as cities grapple with budget constraints.

The walkout affects about 150 municipal transport companies in all but one of Germany’s 16 federal states, including Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen.

One of the largest coordinated actions in local transport sector in years, the strike began as planned, Serat Canyurt, the leading negotiator for Verdi, told rbb radio on Monday, adding that public transport operators were now expected to return to the negotiating table.

COMMUTERS SEEK ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORT IN FRIGID TEMPERATURES
In Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, and Freiburg, services will grind to a halt for the entire day, union officials said.

Temperatures fell below zero in much of the country, worsening the situation for commuters forced to seek alternative transportation.

Still, Deutsche Bahn said Friday its urban railway S-Bahn trains in cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart, along with long-distance services, would run as normal on Monday as staff were not represented by Verdi.

Talks between Verdi and employer associations have been tense, with union leaders accusing municipalities of seeking to cut benefits and lengthen shifts.

In Berlin, Verdi negotiators said operators wanted workers to fund improvements themselves by giving up sick pay and flexible hours.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for February 9.

Union leaders warned that further industrial action could follow if employers do not offer significant concessions. — Reuters

FAA chief accepts failures in deadly mid-air collision

MARK OLSEN-UNSPLASH

SINGAPORE — US Federal Aviation Administration head Bryan Bedford said his agency accepted findings by the US National Transportation Safety Board that a series of systemic failures by the FAA led to a devastating mid-air collision that killed 67 people last year.

The January 2025 collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport was the deadliest US aviation disaster in more than two decades.

The NTSB determined last week that the accident was caused by the FAA’s decision to allow helicopters to travel close to the airport with no safeguards to separate them from airplanes and its failure to review data and act on recommendations to move helicopter traffic away from the airport.

“We don’t disagree with anything that the NTSB has concluded from their investigations. Many of the recommendations have already been put into action. Those that haven’t, we’re going to evaluate,” Mr. Bedford told reporters on the sidelines of an aviation conference in Singapore.

Separately, Mr. Bedford declined to say if the FAA would decertify Canadian-made planes after President Donald Trump threatened last week to do so if Canada did not approve some of US private jet maker Gulfstream’s models.

“Our concern is whether or not sufficient resources are being applied to US products equal to the resources that we’re applying to certify foreign products. So we just want a level playing field,” Mr. Bedford said.

Canadian officials said last week they were working to resolve the dispute after Mr. Trump’s threats to decertify ‌and slap tariffs on Canada-made aircraft sent shares of business jet maker Bombardier down 6% on Friday.

Airline officials said if the US could decertify airplanes for economic reasons, it would give other countries a powerful weapon and could put the entire aviation system at risk.

Mr. Bedford said the FAA was still evaluating a request by Boeing to increase production of its best-selling 737 MAX aircraft from 42 per month to 47 per month. — Reuters

Philippine economy to rebound in 2026 with at least 5% growth, says minister

REUTERS

MANILA — The Philippine economy will bounce back this year with growth of at least 5%, supported by sound fundamentals and a solid performance in its key revenue sectors, the finance minister said on Monday.

The Philippine economy grew just 4.4% in 2025, well below the government’s 5.5% to 6.5% target for the year, as a corruption scandal weighed on public spending and undermined consumer and investor confidence.

Finance Secretary Frederick Go said the country’s economic fundamentals were still intact, with inflation in check and credit ratings remaining the same.

“We will bounce back. And we will definitely have a GDP of at least 5%,” Go told foreign correspondents.

The government is aiming for growth of between 5% and 6% this year.

“All the other pillars of growth of our country remain solid and reliable,” Go said, citing remittance growth from its foreign overseas workers and revenues from the business process outsourcing sector, a key economic driver. — Reuters

VP Duterte faces fresh impeachment complaints

VICE-PRESIDENT SARA DUTERTE-CARPIO FACEBOOK PAGE PHOTO

Two impeachment complaints were filed against Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio on Monday, reviving efforts to remove her from office over corruption allegations after a bid last year stalled when the Supreme Court halted proceedings.

The first complaint, filed by activists affiliated with opposition groups, accused Ms. Duterte of misusing hundreds of millions of pesos in confidential funds, ordering subordinates to falsify reports to conceal the alleged misuse and repeatedly skipping congressional hearings on her office’s budget.

Ms. Duterte is prepared to answer the allegations, her defense spokesman Michael T. Poa said in a statement. She is confident that an impartial review would find the accusations “devoid of both factual and legal basis.”

“The people already know what happened in the past, and we will not give the second-highest official of the land any excuse to be corrupt,” former congresswoman Arlene D. Brosas told a news briefing in Filipino after the complaint was filed at the House of Representatives.

The accusations echo similar claims raised two years ago, when calls for Ms. Duterte’s impeachment intensified after a congressional inquiry that found she might have misused more than 612.5 million in confidential and intelligence funds.

“The Constitution does not permit such cynical disregard for public trust,” according to a copy of the complaint, alleging betrayal of public trust — one of the five constitutional grounds for impeachment, along with bribery, treason, graft and corruption and culpable violation of the Constitution.

It added that the Vice President had treated public funds as a “personal war chest” while evading legislative oversight.

The complaint was endorsed by party-list lawmakers Antonio L. Tinio, Sarah Jane Elago and Renee Louise M. Co.

A second impeachment complaint was later filed by civil society and religious leaders, accusing Ms. Duterte of corruption, unexplained wealth and betrayal of public trust.

The impeachment complaint is not that different from the previous one,” complainant Francis Joseph “Kiko” Aquino Dee said, noting that the Supreme Court had not cleared the Vice President of the earlier allegations.

Ms. Duterte was impeached by the House last year after more than a third of lawmakers backed a fourth complaint, which was transmitted directly to the Senate.

She later won a Supreme Court ruling that voided the proceedings, with the high court saying lawmakers violated constitutional rules by bypassing earlier complaints.

The court barred impeachment moves against the Vice President until Feb. 6, though its ruling allowed new complaints to be filed starting Jan. 15.

Renewed impeachment efforts risk reopening a bitter political feud between the Duterte and Marcos camps, whose alliance in the 2022 elections has since unraveled. — Kenneth Christiane L. Basilio

UK foreign minister says Ethiopia visit to focus on migration

KRISTINA GADEIKYTE-UNSPLASH

LONDON — Britain’s foreign minister said she would use a visit to Ethiopia on Monday to focus on measures to try to stem rising numbers of migrants from the Horn of Africa seeking to reach the United Kingdom.

Yvette Cooper said job creation partnerships would dissuade people from leaving Ethiopia while stronger law enforcement cooperation was essential to counter smuggler gangs and speed up returns of migrants with no right to stay in Britain.

“We are working together to tackle the economic drivers of illegal migration and the criminal gangs who operate globally, profiting from trading in people,” Ms. Cooper said in a statement.

“That includes new partnerships to improve trade and create thousands of good jobs in Ethiopia so people can find a better life back home instead of making perilous journeys.”

Successive British governments have tried to tackle illegal immigration, an issue which has helped to propel populist campaigner Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party into a commanding opinion poll lead.

Around 30% of people crossing the English Channel on small boat over the past two years were nationals from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan, the British foreign ministry said.

To help boost job creation in Ethiopia, Ms. Cooper is due to sign an agreement with the country to take forward two energy-transmission projects led by Gridworks, a UK investment organization.

She was also due to announce 17 million pounds worth of funding for tackling violence against women and girls, assistance for 68,000 children suffering malnutrition, and for projects working with displaced people. — Reuters

Russian Security Council Secretary Shoigu says Russia supports China’s position on Taiwan

MOSCOW — Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Moscow continues to support Beijing over Taiwan, state news agency TASS reported on Sunday.

China and Russia have forged close ties in recent years and declared a “no limits” strategic partnership days before Russian President Vladimir Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

China views democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory and has not renounced using force to bring it under its control. Beijing has offered Taiwan a “one country, two systems” model, similar to Hong Kong, though no major political party in Taiwan supports this.

Russia has repeatedly said it opposes Taiwan’s independence in any form and considers the island an inseparable part of China.

“We see that China’s ill‑wishers continue to destabilize the situation in the Taiwan Strait. For our part, I want to reaffirm our consistent and unwavering support for Beijing on the Taiwan issue,” Mr. Shoigu said, according to TASS news agency.

“We proceed from the fact that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing all of China,” he added.

Mr. Shoigu, a former Russian defense minister, arrived in China earlier on Sunday. The Russian Security Council said Mr. Shoigu and Wang Yi would meet to discuss security issues.

Mr. Wang said China and Russia have an “obligation” to practice multilateralism and to advocate for an equal and orderly multipolar world, according to a readout from the Chinese foreign ministry.

China’s top diplomat called on both countries to maintain close communication on major issues related to bilateral relations, and increase mutual support for each other’s core interests.

China is willing to work with Russia to strengthen strategic communication, deepen strategic coordination and enhance bilateral ties this year, Mr. Wang said.

The trip coincides with talks between Russia, Ukraine, and US officials aimed at ending the almost four-year long conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

PHL manufacturing activity growth hits nine-month high in January

PHILIPPINE factory activity in January expanded at its fastest pace in nine months amid an increase in output and new orders, S&P Global said on Monday.

S&P Global Philippines Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 52.9 in January from 50.2 in December, the strongest improvement in nine months or since April’s 53.0.

A PMI reading above 50 denotes better operating conditions than in the preceding month, while a reading below 50 shows deterioration.

Maryam Baluch, economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said the January PMI data showed a “marked shift in momentum” after a prolonged period of subdued growth in the second half of 2025 due to weather disruptions.

“New orders registered a strong and accelerated uptick, supported in part by a renewed rise in export demand. As a result, production returned to expansion territory for the first time in five months,” Ms. Baluch said.

“Firms responded by stepping up their purchasing activity and increasing their staffing levels in January,” she added. — Aubrey Rose A. Inosante
