COTABATO CITY — The Bangsamoro leadership has rejected the courtesy resignation of Labor and Employment Minister Muslimin G. Sema, making him the first to be retained among all officials asked to leave for changes in the region’s ministerial structure.

Copies of the directive of Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim retaining the chairman of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) as labor minister were released to reporters here on Tuesday afternoon.

“The rejection of BARMM’s chief minister of my courtesy resignation is an indication that he wants inclusivity, multi-sectoral involvement in managing the Bangsamoro government,” Mr. Sema said of the directive of Mr. Ebrahim, who is also the figurehead of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

For decades, both the MNLF and MILF waged secessionist uprisings in Mindanao, but have subsequently signed separate peace agreements with the government. Now they are partners in overseeing the development initiatives of the four-year BARMM government. — John Felix M. Unson

Under Proclamation No. 425 signed on Tuesday, Mr. Marcos said the longer weekend would “encourage families to get together and strengthen their relationships, leading to a better society.”

December 25, Christmas Day and a regular holiday, falls on a Monday.

The President ordered the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to issue a circular to implement the new special non-working holiday for firms in the private sector. – John Victor D. Ordonez

House OKs defense self-reliance bill on 2nd reading

FILIP ANDREJEVIC-UNSPLASH

THE HOUSE of Representatives on Tuesday approved on second reading a bill that seeks to bolster the country’s defense program with preference over locally manufactured equipment.

“This bill recognizes the need to revitalize and strengthen the national defense industry,” House national defense panel chairman and Iloilo Rep. Raul C. Tupas said in his sponsorship speech House Bill No. 9710.

The measure is expected to strengthen local markets and lessen reliance on foreign resources, Mr. Tupas added.

The proposed Self-Reliant Defense Posture Program also seeks to utilize the country’s natural resources for its defense needs, and will only import when the technology is unavailable locally.

Under the proposed measure, relevant funding and technical assistance will be provided to the private sector in order to allocate manpower and resources for defense research.

The bill mandates that country enterprises engaging in the manufacture, servicing and operation of military equipment for the government may be registered under the Board of Investments (BOI) and will be granted fiscal incentives.

The Senate passed a similar measure on third and final reading on Monday. – Beatriz Marie D. Cruz

4 p.m. — Terrafirma vs Converge
8 p.m. — TNT vs NLEX

NLEX gets an extra motivation in its skid-stopping bid tonight as Asi Taulava is poised to set a new PBA record and newly-acquired Robert Bolick up for his debut.

The Road Warriors (2-5) activated the 50-year-old Mr. Taulava and former NorthPort star Mr. Bolick yesterday ahead of their Commissioner’s Cup showdown with TNT (2-3) in the 8 p.m. main game at the PhilSports Arena.

Mr. Taulava’s deployment will enable him to play on his 24th season in the league, breaking the tie with the legendary Robert Jaworski at 23. This serves as a sweetener for the jersey retirement ceremony NLEX has set for “The Rock” at halftime.

“The activation for the Wednesday game signifies a special moment for the NLEX Road Warriors and the entire PBA community as they witness Mr. Taulava’s unparalleled dedication to the sport,” the team said on Tuesday. The Road Warriors are equally excited to unleash Mr. Bolick after apparently striking a deal quickly upon acquiring his rights from the Batang Pier this week.

“In addition to Mr. Taulava, the NLEX Road Warriors will also see the debut of newly-acquired guard Robert Bolick, adding further excitement to the team’s roster,” the squad said.

This marks Mr. Bolick’s PBA comeback after his short stint with Fukushima in the Japanese B. League.

The Frankie Lim-coached crew also recalled Hesed Gabo to active duty following the departure of Don Trollano and Kris Rosales in the Mr. Bolick deal.

Like NLEX, the Tropang Giga led by Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Calvin Oftana are bent to wheel back on track after consecutive losses to Meralco and NorthPort.

The same stop-the-bleeding objective, meanwhile, is carried by Converge (0-6) and Terrafirma (2-4), which tangle in the 4 p.m. curtain-raiser. — Olmin Leyba

UST leads UAAP Season 86 seniors division general championship in first half

UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS — PHILSTAR FILE PHOTO

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) once again claimed the lead in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 seniors division’ general championship race with 12 medals to show after the exciting first semester of play.

The Growling Tigers, who won seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals in 19 sporting events so far, amassed 202 points to seize the driver’s seat entering the second semester.

UST’s biggest performance was in women’s basketball courtesy of the Growling Tigresses, who ended the dynasty of the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs via epic fashion.

The Espana-based squad unseated NU after its reign for seven consecutive years, thus snapping its 17-year title drought. Included in the three-game conquest was UST’s first wins against NU after a 20-game, 11-year losing skid.

Santo Tomas also captured crowns in pet events like men’s chess, men’s table tennis, poomsae, men’s and women’s beach volleyball and women’s taekwondo.

The Growling Tigers copped the silver medal in men’s taekwondo, men’s and women’s judo. They finished with bronze medals in women’s swimming and women’s athletics.

The University of the Philippines (UP) currently lurks behind UST with 172 points while Ateneo de Manila University is in close third place with 167 points.

UP won the women’s swimming and men’s judo while Ateneo reigned supreme in the men’s swimming as well as in the men’s and women’s badminton.

De La Salle University, last year’s runner-up, is at No. 4 with 160 points highlighted by its first men’s basketball title in seven years after besting UP in the three-game finale.

NU (136), Far Eastern University (107), Adamson University (52) and host University of the East (41) followed in order in the point system handing out 15, 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the top three finishers of each event.

If Santo Tomas, the winningest overall champion with 46 general titles, keeps its pace in the second semester with a bevy of events left, it’s on track for a seventh straight general championship in the college division.

In Season 85, UST won the double UAAP crown for the fifth season in a row also winning the juniors division for the fifth straight year.

It’s supposed to be a twin-title for Santo Tomas for the sixth consecutive year but the juniors division was not held in the shortened Season 84 in the middle of the pandemic. — John Bryan Ulanday

Meralco seeks first EASL win against Ryukyu in Macau

Game Wednesday
(Studio City Event Center)
7 p.m. — Meralco vs Ryukyu

MACAU — Meralco looks to tap into the strong presence of Filipinos here for added voltage as it bids to break through in the East Asia Super League (EASL).

The Bolts seek their maiden victory against Japan’s Ryukyu Golden Kings at 7 p.m. tonight in a “home away from home” Group B gig at the Studio City Event Center in Cotai.

“Filipinos are global and they always show love,” Meralco ace Chris Newsome said, expecting countrymen to be in full force at the 5,000-seater arena that previously hosted big entertainment events like concerts of Madonna, GOT7, Aaron Kwok and BTS.

“Even though we’re away from the Philippines, we have a lot of fans and it’s going to feel like a home game,” added the Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.

Revenge also drives the Bolts (0-2) in this return match with former import Allen Durham and the Golden Kings (2-1), who handed them an 89-61 beating the first time around in Okinawa on Nov. 15.

“We dropped the first game so we’re going to be hungry to get this win. We got one Filipino (Carl Tamayo) and somebody we played with in the PBA before (Durham) to match up with. It’s exciting to play Round 2 against them,” said Mr. Newsome.

One key variable the troops of Luigi Trillo count on is the explosive reinforcement Zach Lofton, who wasn’t around yet the first time.

Big man Prince Ibeh solely carried the fight for Meralco against Ryukyu’s Mr. Durham and Jack Cooley as visa problems forced Su Braimoh to stay home then.

Mr. Lofton came on board after the Ryukyu tussle and debuted with 35 points in a 92-97 setback to Jeremy Lin-led New Taipei Kings on the road Nov. 29.

In the PBA last Sunday,  the 6-foot-3 Mr. Lofton caught fire with 54 markers spiked by nine triples in a 125-99 rout of NorthPort and the Bolts hope his hot hands stay hot.

“We’re confident in his capabilities. He scored 54 and I think it’s a good thing for him (going to the Ryukyu game),” said Mr. Trillo.

Moreover, local gunner Allein Maliksi is back in the fold after sitting out the first two matches due to a nose injury.

A day before the “Clash of the Champions” gig held in partnership between the EASL and Melco Resorts & Entertainment, the Bolts visited Sam Yuk School while Mr. Trillo conducted a Q&A with local youth coaches about developing young players. — Olmin Leyba

Inter Miami to take on Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia

LIONEL Messi’s Inter Miami will play two matches in Saudi Arabia early next year including one against familiar foe Cristiano Ronaldo and his club Al-Nassr, the Major League Soccer team said on Monday.

The Riyadh Season Cup, a three-team round-robin tournament, is part of the team’s first international tour, which will also include stops in El Salvador and Hong Kong.

Miami are set to take on Al-Hilal at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh on Jan. 29 before facing Al-Nassr at the same venue on Feb. 1.

“This is another major opportunity to create lasting relationships with passionate fans,” Inter Miami chief business officer Xavier Asensi said in a press release.

“We are excited to connect with new supporters in Saudi Arabia, and also hope people all over the world will be tuning in to see a pair of dream matches like these.”

Mr. Messi and Mr. Ronaldo, who have faced each other more than 30 times in their careers, have won 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them, with the Argentine leading that race eight to five.

Messi received an offer to play in the Saudi league after leaving Paris St Germain but opted to sign with Miami, where he led the team to a trophy in the Leagues Cup and sent ticket prices skyrocketing. — Reuters

Bona fide contender

Tyrese Haliburton stayed even keel in the aftermath of the Pacers’ bridesmaid finish at the In-Season Tournament (IST). True, disappointment was etched in his face as he looked back on their inability to claim the title; his confidence in their capacity to emerge from Las Vegas with an unbeaten record proved unfounded in the Lakers’ superior stand. On the other hand, there can be no denying the significant progress they made en route; they did beat such notables as the Sixers, Celtics, and Bucks en route, signaling to all and sundry their status as bona fide contenders. And as he reflected on their growth, he believed the best is yet to come.

Make no mistake. Haliburton was proud of the Pacers’ accomplishments in the IST. He announced his arrival as a superstar under the klieg lights, spearheading the high-octane offense of the blue and gold with ultra-efficient playmaking. Even as he beamed with pride at his body of work, however, he likewise couldn’t wait to get back to the grind of the regular season. And so he made sure to cite in his post-final presser that his focus would immediately turn to the next match. They had a day to rest before meeting the Pistons on the road.

Which, in a nutshell, was why the Pacers managed to take care of business yesterday. As head coach Rick Carlisle noted: “This is one of the most difficult games you can have, coming off the emotions of last week, the game on Saturday, the travel, and everything else. I just thought our guys did a great job of staying together, keeping their composure and their aggression.” On the court, Haliburton made sure they stayed sharp to counter the Pistons’  resolve to end a horrific losing streak. He didn’t particularly have a good shooting night, hitting only five of 12 shots. He wasn’t all that careful with the ball, either, winding up with seven turnovers. That said, he pushed the ball with the pace and purpose they needed to win.

Indeed, Haliburton is the Pacers’ engine, and they will ultimately go as far as he can take them. He makes them better than the sum of their parts. With their fourth straight victory, they’ve moved up to fifth in the East. And because they’re behind only the Magic and the three they beat in the IST, they know they possess the wherewithal to set up a deep playoff run.

Hunger worsens in Gaza as UN prepares to vote on ceasefire

CAIRO/UNITED NATIONS (UN) — Hunger was worsening among Palestinians in the besieged Gaza strip, aid agencies said, as the United Nations General Assembly was scheduled to vote on Tuesday on an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the two-month-old conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Hundreds more civilians have died in Israel’s assault on Gaza since the US on Friday vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire.

Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes and residents say it is impossible to find refuge or food in the densely populated coastal enclave. The UN World Food Program has said half of the population is starving.

“Hunger stalks everyone,” UNRWA, the UN body responsible for Palestinian refugees, said on X.

Gazans said people forced to flee  repeatedly were dying of hunger and cold as well as the bombardments, describing looting of aid trucks and sky high prices.

Israel says its instructions to people to move are among measures it is taking to protect civilians as it tries to root out Hamas militants who killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostage in an Oct. 7 cross-border attack on Israel, according to Israeli tallies. About 100 hostages have since been freed.

Israel’s retaliatory assault has killed 18,205 people and wounded nearly 50,000, according to the Gaza health ministry.

The 193-member General Assembly is likely on Tuesday to pass a draft resolution that mirrors the language of one that was blocked by the United States in the 15-member Security Council last week.

General Assembly resolutions are not binding but carry political weight and reflect global views.

Some diplomats and observers predict the vote will garner greater support than the assembly’s October call for “an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce.”

SCRUTINY ON US SUPPORT
The vote was due a day after 12 Security Council envoys visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, the only place where limited humanitarian aid and fuel have entered. The United States did not send a representative on the trip.

US President Joseph R. Biden, who has weathered intense criticism for his support of Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 attacks, on Monday told a White House celebration for the Jewish holiday of Hannukah that his commitment to Israel is “unshakeable.”

“Folks, were there no Israel, there wouldn’t be a Jew in the world that was safe,” Mr. Biden said. He also alluded to his complex relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who he said is in a “tough spot.”

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters on Monday that Israel was no exception to US policy that any country receiving its weapons must comply with the laws of war. “We are monitoring everything that happens in this conflict,” Mr. Miller said. “We are engaged in conversations with the Israeli government.”

As the war has intensified, how and where Israel uses weapons from the US have come under more scrutiny, even though US officials say there are no plans to put conditions on military aid to Israel or to consider withholding some of it.

Washington found images circulating on social media showing Palestinian men detained in Gaza in their underwear “deeply disturbing” and asked Israel to clarify the circumstances around the photographs, Mr. Miller added. Israel has said the men were stripped to make sure they were not hiding explosives or weapons.

The White House also said on Monday it was concerned about reports Israel used US-supplied white phosphorus munitions in an October attack in southern Lebanon and was seeking more information. The munitions, which can be legally used on battlefields to make smoke screens among other uses, can cause serious burns.

Israel said an allegation by Human Rights Watch that it uses white phosphorus munitions in Gaza and Lebanon was “unequivocally false.”

NEW AID SCREENING SYSTEM
UN officials say 1.9 million people — 85% of Gaza’s population — are displaced and describe the conditions in the southern areas where they have concentrated as hellish.

To increase the amount of aid reaching Gaza, Israel said on Monday it would add shipment screening at the Kerem Shalom border crossing even though it was not opening the crossing itself.

Most trucks entered the strip at this crossing before the war. Two Egyptian security sources said inspections would begin on Tuesday under a new deal between Israel, Egypt and the United States.

After the collapse of a week-long ceasefire on Dec. 1, Israel began a ground offensive in the south and has since pushed from the east into the heart of Khan Younis city.

On Monday, militants and residents said fighters were preventing Israeli tanks moving farther west and clashing with Israeli forces in northern Gaza, where Israel had said its mission was largely complete.

Israel said dozens of Hamas fighters had surrendered and urged others to join them.

Residents reported exchanges of fire near the coastal road and Hamas media said fighters foiled an attempt by Israeli naval forces to make a landing of forces offshore.

Israeli bombing continued into the night on Monday, residents and health officials said. Medics said Israeli air strikes killed at least 15 people in separate strikes in the central and southern Gaza strip.

Another commercial tanker in the Gulf was struck by a land-based cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen, the US military said. Iran-aligned Houthis have stepped up attacks on vessels in vital shipping lanes and firing drones and missiles at Israel itself since the war erupted on Oct 7. — Reuters
