Josh Allen tosses 4 TDs in Bills’ rout of Jaguars

JOSH ALLEN threw four first-half touchdown (TDs) passes to help the Buffalo Bills steamroll the Jacksonville Jaguars 47-10 on Monday night at Orchard Park, NY.

Allen completed 23 of 30 passes for 263 yards and added 44 rushing yards as Buffalo (3-0) continued its strong start. Allen accumulated 247 passing yards in the first half when the Bills scored touchdowns on all five possessions.

Dalton Kincaid, Keon Coleman, Khalil Shakir and Ty Johnson had scoring receptions for Buffalo. James Cook and Ray Davis had rushing touchdowns and Damar Hamlin recorded his first career interception for the Bills, who racked up five sacks.

Trevor Lawrence connected on 21 of 38 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown and one interception for struggling Jacksonville (0-3). The Jaguars lost their eighth consecutive game when Lawrence has been the starting quarterback.

The Bills outgained Jacksonville 388 yards to 239. In the first half, Buffalo had a 288-70 edge. Allen completed 22 of 28 passes over the first 30 minutes.

Buffalo took the opening kickoff and scored on Cook’s 6-yard run. Tyler Bass’ extra-point attempt was blocked.

Allen then hit Kincaid for a 6-yard touchdown to make it 13-0 with 3:25 left in the opening quarter. Jacksonville got on the board on Cam Little’s 41-yard field goal with 10:39 left in the first half.

Four-plus minutes later, Coleman caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Allen to make it 20-3. Hamlin intercepted Lawrence on Jacksonville’s next possession to set up Allen’s 27-yard scoring pass to Shakir with 2:04 left in the half.

Buffalo finished the half strong when Allen threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Johnson with 19 seconds left to make it 34-3.

The Jaguars scored on the first possession of the third quarter when Lawrence tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brenton Strange.

Bass booted a 27-yard field goal to give the Bills a 37-10 advantage with 5:03 left in the third quarter.

Allen took his final snap with just over 12 minutes remaining and Mitchell Trubisky took over the next time Buffalo had the ball.

Bass tacked on a 43-yard field goal with 7:45 left, and Davis scored on a 3-yard run with 4:04 remaining to finish off the beatdown. Reuters

Playoff experience

The Fever looked ready for their first playoff game since 2016. As they looked back to their remarkable surge after the Olympic break, they found themselves armed with the confidence of players with nothing to lose. And so they vowed to stay loose and have fun in their postseason inaugural against the favored Sun. It likewise helped that their chemistry was at a high, with the Big Three of Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aaliyah Boston as certain of their roles as others in the regular rotation.

If there was anything the Fever lacked heading into Game One of their first-round set-to, however, it was experience. and the fact that the Sun had a surfeit of it ultimately told on their capacity — or, to be precise, evident inability thereof — to be at their best. The vaunted pace that catapulted them to the top of the WNBA in offensive rating was nowhere to be found; instead, they elephant-walked their way to mediocre halfcourt sets, as if the esprit de corps that hitherto enabled them to punch above their weight was nothing but a mirage.

Considering how badly the Fever played, the end of the contest could not come sooner. The final score, a 93-69 shellacking in favor of the Sun, was utterly reflective of their lack of competitiveness. They didn’t just lose every quarter, and the fourth by leaps and bounds. They failed at producing points with precision, failed at preventing stabs at the basket with a modicum of consistency, failed at just about every item necessary for success — especially against highly touted competition.

That said, the Fever are, if nothing else, resilient and proud. It’s how they were able to claw back to .500 ball after an atrocious 1-8 start to their 2024 campaign. And, given their responses in the post-match presser, it’s how they believe they can still win the series. Whether they can truly translate belief into action remains to be seen. In any case, they deserve props for staying undaunted by the task at hand, and for recognizing that the journey of vindication needs to be embarked a step at a time.

Cancer no longer a “Death Sentence” amid improved treatments

JCOMP-FREEPIK

Experts are urging a shift in the long-held perception of cancer as a “death sentence,” highlighting advancements in cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as collaborative efforts to improve patients’ lives.

“First, there are innovations and advancements in treatment, diagnostics, and prevention screening—actually, throughout the entire patient journey. Everyone is working on improving the patient experience,” Dr. Herdee Gloriane C. Luna, President of the Philippine Society of Oncologists (PSO) said in an interview during the media conference last Friday.

One of the new advancements in cancer diagnostics and treatment highlighted during the media conference is “biomarker testing,” which was previously accessible only in other countries at high costs.

This advancement allows more targeted and personalized cancer care as each patient’s unique biomarker pattern can guide more accurate diagnoses and treatments tailored to their specific needs.

Three biomarkers- PD-L1, EGFR, and ALK- have been unified in a lung panel test to benefit cancer patients for the first time.

Hi-Precision Diagnostics is one of the diagnostic centers spearheading the accessibility of biomarker testing to eligible patients.

They collaborate with various cancer facilities across regions and working with oncology pharmaceutical companies.

“This partnership has paved the way to provide biomarker testing accessible to eligible patients and in most cases at no cost,” Mariano Jon Atacador, medical director of Hi-Precision Diagnostics said.

Meanwhile, the PSO highlights the role of local government in promoting the “One Community Against Cancer” initiative within the framework of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA).

Quezon City serves as the pioneering example of localized implementation of NICCA through the Quezon City Integrated Cancer Control Ordinance (QCICCO).

“With this QCICCO, we are institutionalizing (NICCA)… this bridging of the patients to services that are already available,” Allan Chester Nadate, chief of staff for Quezon City councilor Alfred Vargas.

Through QCICCO, cancer control coordinators, cancer patient navigation and referral systems, and the local cancer registry are now available to cancer patients.

The ordinance bridges the gap between patients and the resources and support they need.

On the flip side, Ms. Luna believes that despite advancements in cancer care, the ongoing issue of high costs for medications and treatments persists, emphasizing the urgent need for improved information dissemination to guide patients on where to seek assistance.

“These medications are expensive at the moment; we need to somehow create an atmosphere. We have information access, we have information on discounts, we need to bridge them,” Ms. Luna said.

Patients should not fear cancer diagnoses or the associated costs, as there are access programs available to support their health, she added.

Ms. Luna also noted the importance of early cancer detection to avoid complications and reduce costs.

“So please talk to your doctor… There are success stories, there are survivors, there are those who can control their tumors. Some can live after a cancer diagnosis,” Ms. Luna said.

Through the collaborative efforts of various sectors, the message can be conveyed that cancer is not a death sentence anymore, she added. – Edg Adrian A. Eva

Senate urged to prioritize passage of Teen Pregnancy Prevention bill

STOCK PHOTO | Image by Vanessa from Unsplash

“Pass the Teen Pregnancy Prevention bill now!” is the call of four hundred civil society organizations and government agencies to the Senate, as the bill remains stalled despite being a national priority since 2021 due to the rising number of adolescent pregnancies.

“Nanawagan talaga tayo sa mga colleagues sa kabilang chamber sa Senado na i-prioritize na ang batas na ito [We are really urging our colleagues in the Senate to prioritize this bill],” Raoul Manuel, Kabataan Partylist representative said in his opening statement during a media conference on the Teen Pregnancy Prevention bill last Thursday.

Despite the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention bill, or House Bill (HB) 8910, being approved in Congress with a landslide vote of 232-0 on its third and final reading, the Senate version of the bill remains pending.

There are only a few session days left before the adjournment from September 28 to November 3.

“Each passing day without the enactment of the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Bill leaves young girls vulnerable to an array of dire consequences, such as sexual abuse, infections, high-risk pregnancies, and mental health struggles,” Child Rights Network (CRN) Philippines said in a statement.

The delay of the bill continues amid the rising number of live births among minors aged 10-17, increasing from 50,790 in 2021 to 56,574 in 2022, according to the data of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics.

More than 25,000 live births, including second, third, fourth, and even fifth births, were also reported from pregnancies among minors in 2022.

But what concerns the proponent of the bill is the increase in live births among minors aged 10 to 14, which are regarded as below the age of sexual consent.

“It is really alarming since 2020 from more than 2,000 to more than 3,000 in 2022. These are indicative of sexual abuse,” Myline Mirasol Quiray, head of the knowledge management and communications division of the Commission on Population and Development said during the media conference.

“They are already considered as statutory rape as per Republic Act 11648, or an Act promoting stronger protection against rape and sexual exploitation and abuse.”

Ms. Quiray emphasized the urgency of enacting the bill to protect the youth and save the country from the annual economic loss caused by teenage pregnancy.

“If we pass this bill, we take care of the 10 to 14-year-olds, we take care of the 15 to 19-year-olds, and we address the P33 billion economic loss due to teenage pregnancy,” Ms. Quiray said.

Local government units (LGUs) should also pass ordinances and policies in line with Executive Order No. 141, which identifies adolescent pregnancy as a national priority, she added.

Comprehensive Sexual Education

One of the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention bills seeks to incorporate comprehensive and age-appropriate sexual education into the curriculum to teach children about consent and bodily autonomy, helping to protect them from sexual abuse.

“Ang approach ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon mula Kinder hanggang Grade 12 iba’t-ibang bahagi ng CSE ang ibibigay natin sa mga bata [The approach of the Department of Education is to provide various components of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) to children from kindergarten to grade 12],” Dexter Galban, assistant secretary for operations at the Department of Education (DepEd) said during the media conference.

CSE will begin at kindergarten, teaching children the proper names for their body parts.

As they grow older, the value of consent is taught, along with the differences between good touch and bad touch, and where to go if they experience sexual abuse.

And when they finally reach the appropriate age, the students will be taught about the importance of family planning.

If enacted, the bill seeks to address the gap where 44% of young Filipino females and 39% of Filipino males lack accurate materials about sex, often relying on inaccurate sources, primarily social media.

“This is also coming into time, and we hope to break through the noise. With so much noise online, it’s so easy for our learners to gain access to pornographic sites and other dangerous websites that can twist their understanding of sexuality,” Mr. Galban said.

Apart from CSE, the bill seeks to ensure that young mothers and fathers can continue their education and access social protection, healthcare, counseling, employment opportunities, and life skills training.

The bill will also eliminate the requirement for parental consent for minors seeking family planning services while activating various agencies and organizations to prevent repeated pregnancies.

“One teenage pregnancy is way too much already, because when we have teenage pregnancy, roughly 33% are repeat pregnancies, so we have to find ways to take care of them,” Mr. Galban said. Edg Adrian A. Eva

Israel, Hezbollah exchange fire after hundreds killed in Lebanon

JERUSALEM/BEIRUT — Israel’s military said on Tuesday it struck dozens of Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon overnight, a day after it launched a wave of airstrikes against the Iran-backed group’s sites in Lebanon’s deadliest day in decades.

Hezbollah on Tuesday morning said it had attacked several Israeli military targets, including an explosives factory 60 km (37 miles) into Israel, with the Fadi series of rockets.

It said it attacked the explosives factory around 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) and the Megiddo airfield three separate times overnight.

After almost a year of war against Hamas in Gaza on its southern border, Israel is shifting its focus to the northern frontier, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, also backed by Iran.

The Israeli military said it struck a Hezbollah militant cell and its artillery and tanks hit other Hezbollah targets in the south. Police in northern Israel said fragments of interceptor missiles were found in various areas.

Lebanese authorities said Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon on Monday had killed nearly 500 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safety.

After some of the heaviest cross-border exchanges of fire since hostilities flared in October as the Gaza war erupted, Israel warned people in Lebanon to evacuate areas where it said the armed movement was storing weapons.

Families from south Lebanon loaded cars, vans and trucks with belongings and people young and old. Highways north were gridlocked.

The Lebanese minister coordinating the crisis response, Nasser Yassin, told Reuters 89 temporary shelters in schools and other facilities had been set up, with the capacity for more than 26,000 people as civilians fled what he called “Israeli atrocities.”

Israel’s military said it struck Hezbollah in Lebanon’s south, east and north, including rocket launchers, command posts and militant infrastructure. The Israeli Air Force struck about 1,600 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, it said.

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 492 people had been killed, including 35 children, and 1,645 wounded. One Lebanese official said it was Lebanon’s highest daily death toll from violence since the 1975-1990 civil war. — Reuters

Singapore ex-minister pleads guilty in graft case

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s former Transport Minister S. Iswaran has pleaded guilty to receiving gifts while in office, local media reported, as proceedings began on Tuesday in a rare graft trial involving a state official in this Asian financial hub.

The case, which charges Iswaran with receiving favors that includes tickets to English Premier League soccer matches and to the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix, has gripped the wealthy city-state which prides itself on having a well-paid and efficient bureaucracy as well as strong governance.

Mr. Iswaran, who joined the cabinet in 2006, is the first Singaporean minister to be tried in court.

The 62-year-old was arrested in July last year and was accused of taking kickbacks worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from property tycoon Ong Beng Seng. Iswaran was advisor to the Grand Prix’s steering committee, while Mr. Ong owns the rights to the race.

Mr. Ong has not been charged with any offense and Mr. Iswaran had previously rejected the allegations when he resigned from the cabinet.

In court, he pleaded guilty to the charges of obstructing justice and of a public servant accepting anything of value without payment, or with inadequate payment, from a person with whom he is involved in an official capacity, Channel NewsAsia (CNA) reported, instead of the charges that include corruption.

In a surprise move, prosecutors reduced the charges facing Iswaran to five from 35. The remaining 30 charges will be taken into consideration for sentencing, it added.

The charge of accepting gifts carries a jail term of up to two years and a fine. For obstructing justice, Iswaran can be sentenced to jail of up to 7 years and a fine.

However, the prosecution asked for a much lighter sentence of six to seven months in jail, while the defense is asking for eight weeks, according to CNA.

The prosecution said Mr. Iswaran had obtained from two local businessmen with a total value of S$403,297.92 ($312,440). Mr. Iswaran has paid his financial gains of S$380,305.95 in full to the state, they added.

“The accused obtained all of the gifts for himself, some of which he then distributed to family, friends and others,” the prosecution said.

The last corruption case involving a Singaporean minister was in 1986, when the national development minister was investigated for allegedly accepting bribes. He died before he could be charged in court.

Hottest US city Phoenix smashes heat streak record

UNSPLASH

PHOENIX — The desert city of Phoenix, Arizona, suffered a record 113 straight days with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) this year, leading to hundreds of heat-related deaths and more acres burned by wildfire across the state, officials said.

The city of 1.6 million residents, the largest in the Sonoran desert, had its hottest-ever summer, breaking the previous 2023 record by nearly two degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The 113-day streak reached last week smashed Phoenix’s previous record of 76 days over 100 F set in 1993.

“It’s very rare that we see, especially… two record breaking summers like we just experienced,” said Matt Salerno, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Phoenix office.

Heat has killed 256 people so far this year in Phoenix’s Maricopa County and is the suspected cause of 393 other deaths, according to official data. The county had a record 645 heat deaths last year.

“It is too early to project how totals in 2024 will compare with 2023,” said Nailea Leon, a spokesperson for Maricopa County’s public health department, adding that year-to-date 2024 heat deaths and suspected deaths were below 2023 levels but the summer was not yet over.

Around half of deaths are of unsheltered people, the county’s most vulnerable group.

Deaths peaked in July when Phoenix had regular highs of 118 F, a trend climate scientists attribute to global warming from fossil fuel pollution.

Over the last five years, the city has averaged 40 days of 110 degrees or higher compared with about five days at the beginning of the last century, according to the Arizona State Climate Office.

The extreme heat has led to a statewide increase in acreage burned by wildfire in 2024 compared with last year, according to the office’s director Erinanne Saffell.

China’s retirement age reforms not enough to fix pension headache

HONG KONG — China’s move to raise retirement ages is a starting point to plug gaping pension deficits and bolster a shrinking workforce but more pain lies ahead as the economy slows, making further reforms urgent, say economists and demographers.

Aging populations are a global phenomenon, but the issue is particularly stark in China due to the legacy of its one-child policy, which was in place for three decades and has exacerbated its demographic challenges.

China’s number of births dropped to nine million last year and the United Nations forecasts China’s working-age population will decline by nearly 40% by 2050 from 2010 if fertility rates remain at current levels.

Both older and younger workers have expressed worries about the changes as policy makers grapple with widespread discrepancies between rural and urban pensions, maintaining public stability and high youth unemployment.

“They need to solve the pension problem now because this is when they still have some growth to finance the deficit,” said Alicia Garcia Herrero, Natixis’ chief economist for Asia Pacific.

China’s economic growth rate has slowed from around 8% in the early 2000s to around 5% now and could be as low as 1% after 2035, she said.

Wary of public concerns, Chinese lawmakers fast-tracked the policy without public consultation in September, changing retirement ages that had been set in the 1950s.

Life expectancy in China has risen to 78 years as of 2021 from about 44 in 1960 and projected to exceed 80 by 2050.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang said the reform is a “significant move” to improve China’s social security system and “better safeguard and improve people’s livelihoods,” according to the Xinhua official news agency.

Still, China’s state-led basic pension system is under significant financial pressure.

About one-third of China’s provincial-level jurisdictions are running pension deficits. China’s Academy of Social Sciences has estimated the pension system will run out of money by 2035 without reforms.

Monthly urban pensions range from roughly 3,000 yuan ($425) in less-developed provinces to about 6,000 yuan in Beijing and Shanghai. Rural pensions, introduced nationwide in 2009, are meagre.

VOLUNTARY
China’s cohort of those aged 60 and older is expected to rise at least 40% to more than 400 million by 2035, equal to the populations of Britain and the United States combined.

Migrant workers, who typically receive poor pensions, continue to work into their older years versus state-sector employees with relatively generous government pensions who have less incentives to opt into the higher retirement ages.

The contribution period needed to receive a pension in China will rise to 20 years from 15, starting in 2030.

Expanding the contribution time frame further “especially in the context of the current state of the gig and informal economy could make it harder for many blue-collar workers to be eligible to receive their pension,” said Stuart Gietel-Basten, professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The initial fiscal impact from the raising retirement ages will likely be muted because the increases are largely voluntary, said Ernan Cui, China consumer analyst at Gavekal Dragonomics.

“Raising the retirement age may entail only a limited fiscal gain for now… The coming increase will effectively be optional for many workers, though the increase in the minimum contribution period to obtain a pension will not,” she said.

John Wang, an analyst at Moody’s Ratings, said the new legislation could pose a social risk due to China’s demographic challenges and income inequalities.

“Successful implementation of China’s retirement age reforms will depend on managing risks…such as the skill set of the elderly population, the available jobs and their adaptability to developments in technology and innovation.” — Reuters

Nearly a full-fledged war in Lebanon, EU’s Borrell says

NEW YORK — The escalation between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah is almost a full-fledged war, the European Union’s (EU) foreign policy chief said on Monday.

“This situation is extremely dangerous and worrying. I can say that we are almost in a full-fledged war,” Josep Borrell told reporters.

“If this is not a war situation, I don’t know what you would call it,” he said, citing the increasing number of civilian casualties and the intensity of military strikes.

Mr. Borrell said efforts to reduce tensions were ongoing, but Europe’s worst fears about a spillover were becoming a reality.

He said civilians were paying a high price and all diplomatic efforts were needed to prevent a full-blown war.

“Here in New York is the moment to do that. Everybody has to put all their capacity to stop this path to war,” he said. — Reuters

US violent crime decreased in 2023, hate crimes rose – FBI

STOCK PHOTO | Image by kjpargeter from Freepik

WASHINGTON — Incidents of violent crime in the United States fell by 3% last year, including the largest drop in murder in 20 years, while the number of hate crimes rose, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in an annual report released on Monday.

The report collects crime data from more than 16,000 state and local law enforcement agencies who collectively represent about 85% of the FBI’s crime data reporting program.

The FBI said that murder and non-negligent manslaughter was down about 11.6% while reports of rape decreased by about 9.4%.

The drop in violent crime trends runs counter to claims by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has repeatedly attacked his Democratic rival Kamala Harris for the Biden administration’s record on crime and safety and claimed without evidence that migrants who cross the border illegally are responsible for a rising tide of violent crime.

President Joseph R. Biden, in a statement, praised the decline in crime, noting his administration’s investments in public safety and executive actions on guns.

“While we have made great progress, we are not stopping now,” Vice-President Harris, a former prosecutor and district attorney in California, said separately. “I am committed to continuing our work to support local law enforcement, invest in proven crime prevention and community violence intervention, and address gun violence with commonsense gun safety laws.”

Mr. Trump has said that if he’s reelected, he would institute the death penalty for human traffickers and drug dealers.

He has also said he does not believe federal statistics like the FBI’s report showing that violent crime trends are declining. FBI officials declined to comment when asked about Trump’s claims in a call with reporters but said the agency’s methodology has been consistent.

“This represents crimes that have been reported to police and to the FBI,” the official said.

Earlier this year, the Pew Research Center looked at crime in the United States using two different sets of data from the Department of Justice.

It found that violent crime in the United States fell 49% between 1993 and 2022. However, violent crime rose sharply during the pandemic, with the murder rate spiking to its largest single year increase on record.

The number of hate crimes reported rose by 2% to 11,862 from 11,634, the report said.

Hate crimes have been on the rise in the United States for several years. The FBI last year reported a surge of 11.6% in 2021 from 2020, with the largest number of incidents spurred by bias against Black people.

Still, an FBI official cautioned that more law enforcement agencies reported hate crimes data to the FBI in 2023 compared with 2022, noting: “This may not reflect the true direction of hate crime.”

Adjusting for those year-to-year fluctuations and using data from agencies with more consistent reporting, it found reported hate crimes fell less than 1% from 10,687 in 2022 to 10,627 in 2023, the official told reporters. — Reuters
