SSS to give Taguig LGU workers memberships

BW FILE PHOTO

THE SOCIAL Security System (SSS) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the Taguig City local government units (LGUs) to ensure security coverage for its members and officials.

The SSS will facilitate the issuance of social security (SS) numbers for 3,800 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officers and members from the 38 barangays of Taguig City to initiate their SSS membership, SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Rolando L. Macasaet said in a statement.

SK officials and members can begin paying their monthly contributions and receive social security coverage from SSS once they have received their SS numbers.

“By starting to save for retirement at a young age, these youth leaders are taking control of their financial future. The earlier they begin, the more time they have to grow their retirement fund,” Mr. Macasaet said.

The SSS will also sign a memorandum of agreement (MoA) to implement the KaSSSangga Collect Program, providing social security protection to 70 job order (JO) workers of the Science Education Institute, a service institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DoST), and 60 barangay workers of Barangay North Signal Village in Taguig City and Barangay Pinagkaisahan in Makati City.

It will also sign a deal with officials of Barangays South Signal Village, Upper Bicutan, and Napindan in Taguig, Barangay Pinagkaisahan in Makati, and Barangay Don Bosco in Parañaque to establish localized SSS e-centers in their barangay offices.

They will also set up SSS e-centers in TCGI Engineers and Medical Doctors, Inc.

The SSS E-Center sa Barangay is a partnership between SSS and the LGUs which sets up localized E-Centers in barangays which will be manned by barangay personnel trained to assist their kabarangay in using the My.SSS Portal, SSS Senior Vice President for National Capital Region (NCR) Maria Rita S. Aguja said.

The program helps barangay officials assist people in their respective communities in accessing SSS’ online services more conveniently without having to physically visit SSS offices.

Ms. Aguja added that the SSS will partner with the  Makati Development Corporation (MDC) as the newest partner under the Contribution Subsidy Provider Program (CSPP), with MDC subsidizing SSS contributions of spouses of its 10 foremen for six months. — Aaron Michael C. Sy

Agents monitor BARMM ports for 9 escapees from PDEA-Zamboanga

COTABATO CITY — Bangsamoro police have been deployed to seaports in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi in a bid to recapture seven escapees from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency’s (PDEA) detention facility in Zamboanga City.

Brig. Gen. Prexy D. Tanggawohn, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), said on Tuesday that plainclothes agents have been positioned at seaports in efforts to intercept the seven individuals charged with trading illegal drugs.

Radio reports here quoted Maharani Gadaoni-Tosoc, director of PDEA Region 9, as saying that they have forwarded photos of the seven escapees to different units in the Bangsamoro region now helping track them down.

“Our efforts to prevent them from possibly getting into Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi are coordinated closely with the provincial governments in these three provinces,” said Mr. Tanggawohn.

He identified the seven as Wilson I. Sahiban of Indanan, Sulu; Junjimar H. Aiyob of Upper Patibulan in Panamao, Sulu; Albadir M. Ajijul of Isabela City in Basilan; and four others from different barangays in Zamboanga City — Muhajiran R. Jumlah, Amil Khan M. Abubasar, Jimmy A. Sahibol, and Kerwin M. Abdilla.

They were arrested in separate entrapment operations in recent weeks and have each been charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Top seed San Miguel Beer braces for rubbermatch with Terrafirma

SAN MIGUEL BEERMEN — PBA.PH

Games Wednesday
(Ninoy Aquino Stadium)
4:30 p.m. — San Miguel Beer vs Terrafirma (rubbermatch)
7:30 p.m. — TNT vs Rain or Shine (rubbermatch)

WHO would have thought holder San Miguel Beer (SMB) would be in a fighting-for-dear-life situation at this stage, against an opponent that barely made the playoffs?

But it is what it is and the top-seeded Beermen better summon their old fiery form back if they want to come out of the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals’ Wednesday double knockout slate standing.

Otherwise, the No. 8 and twice-to-win disadvantaged Terrafirma Dyip, 106-95 winner in the first game, are ready to pounce and pull an epic reversal against a powerhouse hunting for back-to-back All-Filipino crown and sweep of Season 48.

The SMB-Terrafirma kill-or-be-killed tiff explodes at 4:30 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium with the victor moving forward to the best-of-seven semifinals against either No. 4 TNT or No. 5 Rain or Shine (ROS). That part of the Last-8 proceedings — a race-to-two affair — is all tied up with the Tropang Giga drawing first blood, 106-99, and the Elasto Painters pulling level, 121-113.

TNT and ROS dispute the Final Four seat at 7:30 p.m.

The challenge for the Dyip, according to coach Johnedel Cardel, is how to make the most of this situation and do an encore.

Meanwhile, TNT hopes to overcome the absence of big man Brandon Ganuelas Rosser, who went down with an ACL tear in Game 2, in securing the clincher versus ROS.

Without Mr. Rosser, grizzled veteran Kelly Williams, who himself is dealing with back issues, Jewel Ponferada and rookie Henry Galinato will carry heavier frontline duties in the decider and possibly beyond. — Olmin Leyba

NU eyes double kill in UAAP S86 men’s and women’s volleyball against UST

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY LADY BULLDOGS — UAAP MEDIA TEAM/JOAQUI FLORES

Games Wednesday
(Mall of Asia Arena)
2 p.m. — UST vs NU (Men’s Finals)
4 p.m. — NU vs UST (Women’s Finals)

A HISTORIC double crown is here for National University’s (NU) taking.

And without an inch of hesitation, the Bulldogs and the Lady Bulldogs shoot for the kill against their University of Santo Tomas (UST)counterparts in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 86 volleyball finals today at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The NU spikers raided the Tigers’ lair with convincing victories in the opener of the best-of-three rumble and want no let-up in a bid to finish them off altogether for their first volleyball twin title in school history.

The Bulldogs, who scored a 25-17, 26-24, 25-19 win to zero in a four peat, get a crack at it at 2 p.m. followed by the Lady Bulldogs’ bid for their second title in three years at 4 p.m. on the heels of a 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 Game 1 win.

NU was anticipated to be in a dogfight against the young Golden Tigresses in their first finals appearance in five years and the hungry Golden Spikers in a finale return trip after a runner-up finish last season before turning their first encounter to a bloodbath.

Simply put, the championship pedigree and the proven experience of the Lady Bulldogs and the Bulldogs spelled the major difference that they will utilize once again in a potential clincher.

It’s the mentality for the Bulldogs, who have been the barometer of collegiate men’s volleyball with their ninth straight finals appearance and a chance for a fourth straight title.

NU’s plans of a victory march will not be met unopposed with Santo Tomas spikers vowing to wage an all-out retaliation to force a pair of winner-take-all duels.

Even if that means for the Golden Tigresses braving on to war with or without top soldier Angeline Poyos, whose status remains up in the air after going down with a right ankle injury in Game 1.

Expect the Golden Spikers to display the same battlecry. “I will challenge the players to wake up and have a sense of urgency. We will give our best. We will play our best,” said coach Odjie Mamon with reigning Most Valuable Player Josh Ybañez and Gboy de Vega leading the way. — John Bryan Ulanday

Premier Volleyball League to hold first rookie draft in July

FOR the first time in its seven-year history, the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) will hold its first rookie drafting rites this July and will be done via lottery that the league would get televised or live streamed for everyone to see.

“Yes, we would be having our first rookie draft possibly this July or just before the Reinforced Conference,” said PVL Commissioner Sherwin Malonzo. “Maybe we could have it live streamed for transparency.”

Mr. Malonzo said the ceremony would be similar to the drafting lottery done in the National Basketball Association wherein the teams that placed at the bottom of the standings will get the best chance of claiming the best picks.

“To avoid tanking, the system we’ll use will give the last placed team from the 12 a 40-percent chance, the second to last 30, the third and fourth to last 20 and 10 percent,” he said.

The last placed team from the just concluded All-Filipino Conference was Strong Group Athletics (SGA) followed by Capital 1 Solar, Galeries Tower and Farm Fresh, which wound up 11th, 10th and ninth, respectively.

Only the last four squads would take part in the lottery as the fifth pick goes automatically to No. 8 Nxled, sixth to No. 7 Akari, seventh to No. 6 Cignal, and eighth to No. 5 PLDT.

The last four picks of the first round goes to No. 4 Chery Tiggo, No. 3 Petro Gazz, No. 2 Choco Mucho and newly crowned All-Filipino Conference champion Creamline.

And the second round will start with SGA getting the first pick and so on and so forth.

This draft meant the old practice of franchises directly hiring players from the collegiate ranks will no longer be allowed. — Joey Villar

Strong Group Athletics to play in Jones Cup

STRONG GROUP ATHLETICS (SGA) will fly the flag in the 43rd William Jones Cup on July 13 to 21 in Taipei, Taiwan.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has selected Strong Group Athletics as the country’s representative, expressing strong confidence and belief in the team’s capability to bring home back the crown from the regional invitational tourney.

With six titles, the Philippines is the second winningest country in the annual tilt next only to the US with 16. The country’s last title came in 2019 courtesy of Mighty Sports while Rain or Shine as the country’s bet finished seventh last year. The mission for redemption is now on SGA’s hands with coaches Charles Tiu and Rakjo Toroman leading the way.

“Strong Group Athletics has been contributing to Philippine sports by supporting athletes and national sports associations (NSAs) such as the SBP. Frank Lao, his son Jacob, and Strong Group have shared their desire to bring back the Jones Cup championship trophy to the country and bring joy to Filipinos overseas,” said SBP Executive Director Erika Dy.

“We are grateful to the SBP for allowing us to compete in the William Jones Cup and bring joy to the overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan just like what we did in Dubai,” added Mr. Lao.

This will be the second straight international joust for SGA after a runner-up finish in the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship earlier this year.

Led by a powerhouse squad featuring NBA veterans Dwight Howard and Andre Roberson, former Gilas Pilipinas center Andray Blatche, Justine Baltazar, Jordan Heading and UAAP MVP Kevin Quiambao, Strong Group swept its way to the finals only to absorb a 77-74 buzzer-beating loss to Lebanon’s Al Riyadi.

More than the Philippines, this tour of duty will also serve as revenge bid for Strong Group.

“We will form a team that will be ready to win it all and that Filipinos will be proud of,” said Mr. Tiu, who will announce the team roster soon. — John Bryan Ulanday

French star Giroud plans to join MLS

FRENCH striker Olivier Giroud confirmed Monday that he will depart AC Milan to join Major League Soccer (MLS) when his contract expires this summer.

There have been previous reports that the 37-year-old former World Cup champion plans to join countryman Hugo Lloris at LAFC.

“The next two games will be my last for Milan,” he said in an interview published on AC Milan’s official channels. “My career will continue in MLS. I’m very proud of everything I’ve done here at Milan across three seasons. It’s the right time to announce it. — Reuters

Boston Celtics hold off Donovan Mitchell-less Cavaliers for 3-1 edge

JAYSON TATUM tossed in a game-high 33 points and Jaylen Brown finished with 27 as the visiting Boston Celtics beat the undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers 109-102 on Monday in Game 4 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series.

The victory gives the Celtics a 3-1 edge in the best-of-seven series. The teams will play Game 5 on Wednesday in Boston.

Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland’s leading scorer, didn’t play because of a leg injury. Mr. Mitchell, who averaged 31.7 points per game in the first three contests of the series, strained his left calf in the final minutes of Boston’s 106-93 victory in Game 3 on Saturday.

The Cavaliers fell to 12-16 in games Mr. Mitchell has missed this season.

Boston had a 98-83 lead following a Brown basket with 7:56 to play, but Cleveland kept things interesting by scoring the next eight points. That burst was part of a 12-2 run that the Cavaliers used to pull within five points with 3:14 to play, and Cleveland trailed 102-97 until Mr. Brown extended Boston’s lead to eight points by making a 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining.

Jrue Holiday added 16 points for the top-seeded Celtics, who held Cleveland to 43.6 percent shooting from the field (41 of 94). Mr. Holiday made 4 of 8 3-point attempts.

Fourth-seeded Cleveland received 30 points and seven assists from Darius Garland plus 19 points apiece from Evan Mobley and Caris LeVert. Mr. Mobley also had a team-high nine rebounds.

The Celtics led 37-30 at the end of one quarter and 62-57 at halftime. Mr. Tatum, who finished the game with 11 rebounds, led all scorers with 23 points in the first half.

Cleveland took a 65-64 lead — its first edge since early in the opening quarter — on a Garland layup with 9:24 remaining in the third, but Boston answered with a 7-0 spurt to go up by six. The Celtics had an 88-78 advantage after three quarters. — Reuters

East humdinger

It was clear from the outset that the Pacers wanted to test the endurance of the Knicks. Down one to two in the semifinal round series, they understood that the onus was on them to once again lean on the support of the 17.274-strong fans at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse to draw even. And, as far as they were concerned, it meant pushing the pace at every opportunity. Not for nothing have they punctured the hoop with more consistency when they run, run, and, well, run. For Game Four, there was also the not insignificant fact that the blue and orange — already predisposed to a tight rotation — were further handicapped by the absence of regulars OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson.

Forty-eight live-action minutes later, the Pacers got the victory they wanted in the way they envisioned. They were energized from the get-go, and the weary Knicks proved unable to keep abreast. By the time the first quarter became part of history, the lead was 20 points. At the half, it had grown to 28. And after three periods, it was an insurmountable 38. So dominant were they that the visitors saw fit to empty the bench for the final canto. Apart from the first one and a half minutes, the blue and gold had such a chokehold on the set-to that not a few observers wondered if they finally found a sustainable formula for winning.

If there’s anything the National Basketball Association Playoffs have underscored over time, however, it’s that nothing — absolutely nothing — can be etched in stone. Pro scene annals have been privy to both otherworldly turns and monumental collapses in the postseason. Which is why the Pacers would do well not to succumb to a false sense of security. Complacency can yet be their downfall. For one thing, it’s not as if they’re in the driver’s seat; the best-of-seven affair is, after all, tied, with the Knicks retaining homecourt advantage. For another, there can be no underestimating the grit of Most Valuable Player candidate Jalen Brunson and Company.

All things considered, it’s fair to contend that today’s match will be critical for the Pacers. Triumph, and they get to head home with the chance to advance to the East Finals. Not that it will be easy, to be sure; they’ve prevailed only once at the Garden, and it was way back in February. Meanwhile, the Knicks — under the tutelage of extremely detail-oriented Tom Thibodeau — will most certainly be ready for a counter. In other words, a humdinger awaits.

US and Taiwan navies quietly held drills in April

TAIPEI — The US and Taiwan navies conducted joint drills in the Pacific in April that, officially, did not take place, four people briefed on the matter said, as the two militaries boost cooperation amid rising Chinese military threats.

Washington and Taipei have been expanding their military cooperation in recent years amid almost daily Chinese incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone and drills by Chinese forces near the island.

US-Taiwan military engagement, including visits and training, are kept low-key and are often not officially confirmed because of China’s objection to any military contacts between Washington and Taipei. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, which the island strongly rejects.

The drills, which were not publicized, took place last month in the Western Pacific, according to the sources, who requested anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter.

One source said “multiple military assets” were involved. A second source said the drills did not officially exist and were dubbed “unplanned sea encounters,” pointing to a tacit agreement in which both sides claim the exercises were simply the result of coincidental encounters.

“It’s like I am dining in this restaurant, and you also happen to be here,” the source said. “Then it looks like I am only sharing the same table with someone.”

That source also said about half a dozen navy ships from both sides, including frigates and supply and support vessels, participated in the days-long exercises, which were designed to practice “basic” operations such as communications, refueling and resupply.

Taiwan’s navy said in a statement to Reuters that to handle unexpected scenarios at sea and to minimize “interference” with each another, the navy “acts in concert with the US-promoted Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea,” also known as CUES.

“The Navy often makes contact with vessels of other countries and conducts encounter drills as needed,” the statement said, without elaborating.

The Pentagon declined to comment.

Taiwan and the United States have no official diplomatic relationship, as Washington formally recognizes Beijing but is bound by law to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself and is the island’s most important international backer.

A third source said although the “unplanned encounters” of the two navies involved mostly basic exercises, such drills are vital to ensure the two militaries can operate together in times of emergency.

The source added that the two navies also practiced various tactical manoeuvres, including searching for underwater targets.

CUES was formulated about a decade ago to help de-escalate tensions between militaries at sea, providing guidelines such as safe speeds and distances, a common communications language, and what actions to take if a ship becomes disabled.

China’s defense ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taiwan’s navy chief, Tang Hua, last month visited the United States and discussed how to boost bilateral naval cooperation, Reuters reported. In response, China’s foreign ministry said it firmly opposed “military collusion” between the United States and Taiwan.

This month, Taiwan’s Chief of the General Staff Admiral Mei Chia-shu attended the change-of-command ceremony for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii, which only came to light after he was spotted in the audience in an official picture.

China has long said Taiwan is China’s most sensitive territorial issue, which is a major bone of contention in Sino-US ties.

Beijing has not renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, while Taipei says the Chinese territorial claims are void as the People’s Republic of China has never governed the island. — Reuters

White House sees no genocide in Gaza, condemns aid convoy attacks

IMAGE VIA ARCHITECT OF THE CAPITOL

WASHINGTON — US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Monday that President Joseph R. Biden’s administration does not view the killings of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel in its war with Hamas as genocide.

Mr. Sullivan said the United States wants to see Hamas defeated. He also said that Palestinians caught in the middle of the war were in “hell” and that a major military operation by Israel in Rafah would be a mistake.

“We do not believe what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. We have been firmly on record rejecting that proposition,” Mr. Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

Mr. Sullivan expressed concern about reports of Israeli settlers attacking a humanitarian aid convoy on its way to Erez Crossing in northern Gaza, the second such incident in less than a week. “It is a total outrage that there are people who are attacking and looting these convoys,” Mr. Sullivan said. “It is completely and utterly unacceptable behavior.”

Mr. Biden, who is running for re-election this year, has faced heavy criticism from his own supporters domestically for his support of Israel; some of those critics have accused Israel of committing genocide. More than 35,000 Palestinians in Gaza have died, according to Gaza health officials.

Biden has sought to influence Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to the war, Mr. Sullivan said, but Israel is a sovereign, democratic nation that ultimately makes its own decisions, Mr. Sullivan said.

“The prime minister doesn’t have to answer to us. He’s got to answer to the Israeli people,” Mr. Sullivan said.

Reiterating a comment made by Mr. Biden on Saturday, Mr. Sullivan said there could be a ceasefire in Gaza now if Hamas would release hostages. The world should be calling on Hamas to return to the negotiating table and accept a deal, Mr. Sullivan said.

The United States is working urgently for a ceasefire and hostage-release deal, Mr. Sullivan said. He said he could not predict when or if such a deal would be sealed. — Reuters
