4 BIFFs arrested in Maguindanao; 2 Maute group members surrender in Lanao

FOUR MEMBERS of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were arrested by government forces on Oct. 17 in a dawn raid in General Salipada K Pendatun, Maguindanao. The military’s 33rd Infantry (Makabayan) Battalion (33IB) reported that the suspects “offered no resistance” when armed soldiers and policemen stormed their hideouts to serve the arrest warrant against Datu Parido Balabagan, also known as Commander Banog of the BIFF. Commander Banog, along with eight of his men, evaded arrest by using a secret passage behind the compound where he was hiding. Lt. Col. Harold M. Cabunoc, 33IB commaner, identified the suspects as Ronex Langalen, 47; Anwar Abdullah, 26; Allakbar Sekung, 20; and Renante Milan, 37. They were handed over to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao for the legal cases that would be filed against them. The BIFF is a breakaway group from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which signed a peace deal with the government that paved the way for the new Bangsamoro Organic Law.
LANAO DEL SUR
Meanwhile, two members of the extremist Maute group surrendered in Lumbaca-Unayan, Lanao del Sur afternoon of Oct. 16, the Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) reported. Mubarak Dimasangkay Bassit and Alinok Muntik, who were part of the group that attacked the military’s Barangay Pantar detachment during the Marawi siege last year, yielded to Lt. Col. Ian Noel P. Ignes, commanding officer of the 55th IB, which is part of Joint Task Force (JTF) Ranao. WesMinCom said 10 Maute “remnants” have surrendered to JTF Ranao this month. “It is but more fulfilling to end terrorism without a single bloodshed,” said Lieutenant General Arnel B. Dela Vega, WesMinCom chief. “We hope that more bandits will decide to surrender instead of engaging in armed confrontations,” he added.

Peso weakens anew versus dollar

THE PESO weakened on Thursday in tandem with Asian currencies as the dollar strengthened following the release of the US Federal Reserve meeting minutes.
The local unit ended Thursday’s session at P53.965 versus the greenback, weaker than its P53.89-per-dollar finish the previous day.
The peso traded weaker the whole day, opening the session at P53.98 versus the dollar. It slipped to as low as P54.045, while its intraday high stood at P53.94 against the greenback.
Dollars traded slid to $729.25 million from the $872.95 million that switched hands on Wednesday.
A foreign exchange trader said the peso weakened versus the greenback as it consolidated throughout the day.
“We saw the peso trading weaker today, just in tandem with the region. With the yields in the US moving higher also, I think the dollar was bid up,” the trader said in a phone interview on Thursday.
In the minutes of the Sept. 25-26 meeting of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), central bankers backed raising benchmark rates amid US President Donald J. Trump’s view that the tightening moves have gone too far, Reuters reported.
The hawkish stance of the US central bank also pushed the dollar index higher to 95.65 against a basket of six major currencies.
“The peso depreciated following the release of hawkish FOMC minutes, which showed continued support for gradual US rate hikes,” another trader said.
The first trader added that the peso consolidated yesterday as the market is still awaiting whether the local unit will continue to strengthen or if there will be demand from oil companies as well as importers, which will likely take the opportunity to buy greenback.
“There is still a chance for the peso to improve since the market is expecting the inflation to peak already despite the fact that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is saying it might be [faster] for October.”
For Friday, the first trader expects the peso to move between P53.80 and P54.05 versus the dollar, although noting that the range will depend on the market’s performance overnight.
The other trader gave a P53.85-P54.05 forecast range, saying the peso could weaken further “in view of stronger greenback due to the upbeat US unemployment expectations.” — Karl Angelo N. Vidal

PSE index posts gains on hawkish Fed minutes

The local bourse climbed on Thursday amid last-minute buying and a hawkish US Federal Reserve.
The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi)inched up 0.58% or 41.57 points to 7,141.25. The broader all-shares index also climbed 0.46% or 20.12 points to 4,632.40.
“Our index ended positive due to last-minute buying spree as investors try to retest the 7,200 level despite the absence of fresh local catalysts to lure back foreign investors in our stock market,” Jervin S. de Celis, trader at Timson Securities, Inc., said in a mobile phone message.
Mr. De Celis said yesterday’s movement was expected as the index stocks were heavily sold down last week following a triple-digit drop by the Dow Jones for two straight days. As such, the current factors do not point toward an actual recovery for the market.
“I guess this is more of a rebound but not convincing enough to assume that we’re in a reversal trend since most of the news coming from the west are still supportive or indicative of future strength for the US dollar and a hawkish stance from the US Fed which can further the foreign selling in our market,” Mr. De Celis added.
Regina Capital Development Corp. Managing Director Luis A. Limlingan said the “slightly hawkish” minutes of the recent Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting also pushed the local index upward.
“FOMC minutes from the September meeting showed that Fed officials debated how high to push interest rates, with a majority appearing to favor an eventual and temporary move above the level they deem neutral for the economy in the long run. The committee was otherwise in broad agreement over continuing on the current, gradual path of rate increases,” Mr. Limlingan said in a mobile message.
“The major indexes traded in a wide range before the minutes were released as investors grappled with a flood of corporate earnings and weakness in the housing market,” Mr. Limlingan added, also noting easing crude prices and the temporary halt on trade tensions between the US and China as positive factors.
Back home, all counters ended in the green. Mining and oil saw the biggest gains, soaring 3.04% or 278.25 points to 9,406.86; holding firms rose 1.22% or 83.16 points to 6,883.73; services climbed 0.31% or 4.63 points to 1,489.19; financials went up 0.28% or 4.56 points to 1,605.77; property increased 0.24% or 8.54 points to 3,556.40; and industrials inched up 0.05% or 5.93 points to 10,837.66.
Advancers outpaced losers, 92 to 85, while 47 issues were unchanged.
Value turnover totaled P4.02 billion as 457.65 million shares were traded, lower than the previous day’s P5.74 billion worth.
Foreigners continued to dump shares although selling eased to a net P149.63 million from the P633.66-million net outflow logged on Wednesday. — Janina C. Lim

Archers expect tough battle with similarly styled Falcons

By Michael Angelo S. Murillo
Senior Reporter
SIMILARLY earning their card on defense, the De La Salle Green Archers know all too well that when they take on the Adamson Soaring Falcons in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines it is going to be a battle.
To face each other for the second time in UAAP Season 81 this weekend, the Archers (5-3) said they are bracing for another close fight with the Falcons (6-2), much like their first joust that was not decided till it went to overtime.
“I think it’s a given that when you play a team that puts defense first in the order it’s going to be a tough battle,” said La Salle coach Louie Gonzalez when asked for his thoughts on their reengagement with Adamson, coached by former Archers champion coach Franz Pumaren.
“Good thing that as far as the schedule we will enter the game like them. We played today (Wednesday) and then on Saturday. Physically and mentally we are on the same level,” said Mr. Gonzalez, referring to both teams playing on Wednesday, Oct. 17, where they beat their respective opponents.
The La Salle coach went on to say that they are viewing the match against Adamson with much significance considering how teams are currently stacked up in the standings.
“We know the importance of that game as far as the race to the playoffs. I’m very focused on the standings right now, not necessarily the opponents but more on our team. We want to get as many wins as we can regardless of who we face,” Mr. Gonzalez said.
FIRST ROUND
In their first encounter on Oct. 13, the Archers and Falcons fought to a slugfest with the former eventually surviving, 79-78, in overtime.
It was tight right from the get-go with both teams showing great resolve to see their respective causes through.
The Falcons held a five-point cushion, 64-59, with three minutes to play in the fourth period but saw it overhauled by the Archers with Santi Santillan and Aljun Melecio conspiring to level the count at 64-all for the remainder of regulation to force overtime.
In extra time, La Salle jump-started things with a 9-0 blast to race to a 73-64 lead.
Adamson though would not go away without a fight, coming to within two points, 77-75, with 18 seconds to go.
But no comeback would go the Falcons’ way as the Archers hang on to book the victory.
Melecio led La Salle with 22 points, going for 8-of-18 shooting from the floor.
Big man Justine Baltazar had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Santillan had 16 and nine for La Salle.
Jerrick Ahanmisi, meanwhile, paced Adamson with 27 points while Sean Manganti added 23.
In the ongoing season, the Archers and Falcons are two of the top three defensive teams with La Salle second in points allowed with 70.4 and Adamson third with 71 points per game.
The La Salle-Adamson game is set for 2 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum to be followed by Ateneo de Manila University versus Far Eastern University at 4 p.m.

Kershaw’s strong outing lifts Dodgers to 3-2 NLCS lead

LOS ANGELES — Clayton Kershaw used an old-school approach Wednesday as the Los Angeles Dodgers dispatched the new-age Milwaukee Brewers to move one victory away from their second consecutive World Series appearance.
Leaning heavily on his breaking pitches, Kershaw struck out nine over seven innings as the Dodgers earned a 5-2 victory, with the National League Championship Series now shifting to Milwaukee for Game 6 on Friday.
The defending NL champion Dodgers took a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-seven series as they aim to take part in consecutive World Series for the first time since 1977-78.
“To go back to Milwaukee up 3-2 as opposed to being down 3-2 is huge for us,” Kershaw said. “It’s a tough place to play. It’s a great team. And it’s been a battle every single game we’ve played them so far, and we don’t expect anything different when we go back. We’re in a much better spot now because of today, and I’m glad I was able to contribute today.”
Brewers left-hander Wade Miley will make his second consecutive start in Game 6. Miley started Game 5 but faced just one batter, walking Cody Bellinger on five pitches. He gave way to right-hander Brandon Woodruff as the Brewers aimed to skew the percentages ever so slightly in their favor.
The Dodgers appeared to sense a bit of deception was approaching as manager Dave Roberts started left-handed hitters Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy. Neither started in Game 2 against Miley. The tip-off likely came when the Brewers stayed away from Woodruff on Tuesday in a 13-inning game.
“Well, obviously our lineup today was different than the other lineup when we faced Miley, so you’ve got to prepare for the unexpected,” Roberts said. “So I liked where we were at. … It was very unconventional, but we were prepared for anything.”
The one-batter-and-done plan was the Brewers’ strategy all along. Brewers manager Craig Counsell admitted that he was in search of the Dodgers’ righty lineup when he made the plan to flip Miley for Woodruff early in Game 5. Miley said he had no qualms with the move.
“It’s not my job to question it,” Miley said. “We’re trying to get to the World Series, and the strategic side of it can be a pretty good idea the way they use their bench over there. I was in. Everybody bought in.”
It took the Dodgers until the fourth inning to get a hit off Woodruff, when Joc Pederson singled, and until the fifth to score a run, on an Austin Barnes RBI single that tied the game 1-1.
The Brewers struck first in the third inning when Kershaw walked Woodruff to put runners on first and second. Lorenzo Cain followed with an RBI double off the wall in center field.
Following a Ryan Braun walk two batters after Cain’s RBI double, Kershaw (1-1) retired the final 13 batters he faced. The streak started with an eight-pitch strikeout of Jesus Aguilar, when the Brewers had two runners on base.
“Anytime you can work yourself out of situations like that, that’s going to make or break the game,” Kershaw said. “Minimizing damage as best you can as a starting pitcher is huge. In the playoffs, you probably don’t get many chances to work out of jams because you’re going to get taken out of the game because the magnitude of the game is so large.”
Kershaw gave up one run on three hits with two walks. He also worked two walks at the plate.
“When Kershaw is right, when he’s mixing all three pitches and attacking hitters, it doesn’t matter,” said Barnes, who wasn’t behind the plate when Kershaw allowed five runs (four earned) in three-plus innings in Game 1. “It was a rough start in Milwaukee, but we’re confident with him on the mound and he kept us in the game and gave us a shot to win.”
Muncy’s go-ahead RBI came after Justin Turner singled to lead off the sixth and Manny Machado was hit by a pitch. Yasiel Puig added a pinch-hit RBI single in the inning to give the Dodgers a 3-1 lead.
The Dodgers added two more runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Turner and a run-scoring groundout from pinch hitter Brian Dozier.
The Brewers’ Curtis Granderson had a pinch-hit RBI double in the ninth inning off Ryan Madson. Kenley Jansen then entered and struck out Mike Moustakas for the final out and his third save of the postseason, his second of the series.
Woodruff (1-1) gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He issued one walk and struck out eight.
“I’ve done different roles this year, so when Craig came in and told me what the plan was, I was ready for anything,” Woodruff said. “I didn’t think much of it. All I knew that my job was to go in and get outs.” — Reuters

ROS Elasto Painters gun for third consecutive win

ERSTWHILE struggling Rain or Shine Elasto Painters return to Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup action today, battling the Columbian Dyip with the hopes of extending their resurgence that has seen them win back-to-back games.
Opened their campaign in the season-ending PBA tournament with four straight defeats, undermanned Rain or Shine (2-4) has seemingly found its groove and adjusted and is now eyeing to continue rolling in their 4:30 p.m. clash with winless Columbian (0-9) at the Ynares Sports Center in Antipolo City.
The Elasto Painters, still playing sans big man Raymond Almazan due to personal reasons, won their second straight game on Wednesday, Oct. 17, beating the NorthPort Batang Pier, 120-98.
Rain or Shine was all over Northport in said game, building a 35-19 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back the rest of the way.
Chris Tiu had a career-high 23 points on a high 75% shooting in the victory with import Terrence Watson adding 21 points.
Beau Belga had 21 points as well while James Yap had 20 of his own.
“It was another good game for us. Everybody found their shot and was hitting it from anywhere. Hopefully we get to sustain it in our coming games,” said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia after their win.
Columbian (0-9), for its part, continues to struggle and is still finding its first victory in the tournament to avert being shut out.
The Dyip bowed to the Alaska Aces, 104-94, in their last game on Wednesday that had import Akeem Import finishing with a near-triple double of 19 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists.
Meanwhile in the main game at 7 p.m., league-leading Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok take on the Meralco Bolts.
Magnolia (7-1) has won five in a row while Meralco (2-6) halted a six-game losing streak last time around. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

San Beda secures top spot with payback win over Lyceum

By Michael Angelo S. Murillo
Senior Reporter
THE defending champions San Beda Red Lions secured top spot in the elimination round of Season 94 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association after defeating the Lyceum Pirates, 75-68, in their deciding game on Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
Both needing a win to secure the number one seed in the Final Four of the ongoing NCAA season, the Lions (16-1) stepped up to the plate and seized the victory but not after having made to sweat late in the game by the Pirates (15-3).
The win was also a payback by San Beda on Lyceum which dealt it its lone defeat to date in the first round.
Mike Nzeusseu got things started for Lyceum, helping his team to an early 7-2 lead in the first quarter.
But guard Robert Bolick would take the lead for San Beda with the team going on a 16-6 run the rest of the period to go on top, 18-13.
Bolick And Company continued to impose their dominance over the Pirates in the second quarter, racing to a 35-24 advantage with 3:23 to go in the frame.
Lyceum tried to narrow down their deficit after but could only take it down to eight points, 39-31, by the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Lions sustained their aggressiveness, extending their lead to 18 points, 51-33, midway.
The Pirates managed to cut San Beda’s lead to 14 points, 53-39, a minute later only see the Lions pull away once again.
The count stood at 59-48, and San Beda on top, heading into the payoff quarter.
Sensing they needed to step up if they are to claw back in the game, Lyceum scrambled to begin the fourth period and not allow the Lions to just run away with the win.
CJ Perez and MJ Ayaay led the Pirates to within five points, 71-66, with 1:05 left in the game.
Donald Tankoua though stopped the bleeding for San Beda with a basket with 43 ticks left, giving his team more breathing room, 73-66.
Ayaay scored a bucket for Lyceum off a steal to come to within five anew, 73-68, with 36 seconds remaining.
The Pirates still had a chance to come even closer but a turnover by Spencer Pretta off an inbounds play with 20 seconds left proved to be costly as they could not recover from it.
Bolick and rookie James Kwekuteye led the Lions with 18 points apiece with Tankoua finishing with 15 and Javee Mocon 13.
Nzeusseu, meanwhile, paced Lyceum with 15 points with JC Marcelino adding 14 and Ayaay 11.
San Beda still has one game left to play against the Perpetual Help Altas on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Eddie Alvarez excited over new challenges in ONE Championship

NOW part of Asia’s biggest sport media property ONE Championship, former lightweight champion Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez said he is very excited over his about-to-begin new journey even as he said he was happy with the decision he described as “well-made.”
Officially signed with ONE early this week, Mr. Alvarez, 34, a champion fighter with Bellator and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is set to showcase his top-notch skills under the Singapore-based promotion after inking a multi-bout deal.
“Really exciting time for me and everyone in my team. It was a decision well-made and professionally done by ONE and we really appreciate that. I’m looking forward to competing with the best lightweights in the world through ONE,” shared Mr. Alvarez to global media in a conference call on Thursday morning (Manila time).
“I pride myself in giving my all and that is something I bring to the table. I’m really excited. It is going to be a fun adventure,” he added.
Mr. Alvarez (29-6, one no contest) was last seen in July this year in his rematch with Dustin Poirier in the UFC where he lost by way of technical knockout in the second round (punches and elbow).
After the defeat, which was his last fight under his recent UFC contract, Mr. Alvarez was left unsigned, opening the doors for other promotions, including ONE, to sign him up.
Philadelphia native Alvarez said the opportunity to make history in winning a world title in another major promotion was one of the factors that lured him into signing up with ONE.
“Not going to many details but I had a lot offers around the world. We got offers from just about everyone you can think of and everyone expressed interest,” said Mr. Alvarez during the hour-long media conference.
“But the idea of ONE Championship [interested me] because as far organizations it is something I have not had a world title in. I won in Bellator twice and also won in the UFC. ONE Championship is a world organization that I haven’t held a world title. And for myself and my family, as well as my fans, it means a lot to make history. To go in every major organization and succeed is something I am excited about. And I am up for it,” he added.
In Bellator, Mr. Alvarez (29-6, 1 no contest) won the lightweight title in 2009, holding it for two years.
He was once again crowned champion in 2013 when he won over Michael Chandler by split decision.
Mr. Alvarez then moved to the UFC after where he beat the likes of Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis before taking the lightweight title from Rafael Dos Anjos by way of technical knockout (punches) in the opening round of their title clash in July 2016.
He was to lose the title though four months later to Conor McGregor. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo

Davis, Payton send Pelicans flying past Rockets

LOS ANGELES — Anthony Davis had 32 points and 16 rebounds, and Elfrid Payton had a triple-double as the retooled New Orleans Pelicans routed the host Houston Rockets 131-112 in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night.
Payton, one of two key offseason acquisitions, had 10 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds, and the other key pick-up, forward Julius Randle, had 25 points off the bench.
Payton was brought in to replace point guard Rajon Rondo, who signed as a free agent with the Lakers, and Randle replaced All-Star forward DeMarcus Cousins, who signed with the Warriors, as New Orleans tried to assemble a group to surpass last season’s team, which finished sixth in the West and lost to Golden State in the conference semifinals.
Nikola Mirotic added 30 points, including 6 of 8 3-pointers, and 10 rebounds, E’Twaun Moore scored 21 points and Jrue Holiday had 10.
The Rockets didn’t look like a team ready to match or surpass last season, when they had the NBA’s best record and took the Warriors to seven games before losing in the West finals.
Eric Gordon came off the bench to lead the Houston with 21 points, PJ Tucker and Chris Paul had 19 points each, James Harden had 18 — 12 fewer than he averaged while earning the MVP award last season — and 10 assists, and Michael Carter-Williams had 10 points.
Carmelo Anthony came off the bench in his Houston debut and finished with nine points.
New Orleans had a 17-point halftime lead after shooting 61.7 percent in the first half, and the Pelicans didn’t cool off to start the third quarter.
Mirotic made three 3-pointers and Moore added one as five Pelicans contributed points during a spurt that produced a 97-68 lead.
Gordon made a basket, and Carter-Williams hit a 3-pointer to start a 16-4 run that pulled the Rockets within 101-84 at the end of the third quarter.
Another basket by Gordon started the fourth-quarter scoring, but New Orleans scored the next six points to take a 107-86 lead.
The Pelicans led by as many as 11 points during the first quarter and finished the period with a 35-29 lead as Davis and Mirotic each had 10 points.
Houston matched New Orleans’ scoring for most of the second quarter before the Pelicans finished with a 16-5 run that saw five players score.
New Orleans held a 71-54 halftime lead as Davis had 18 points, Randle had 17, and Mirotic 15.
DEROZAN LEADS SPURS PAST BUTLER, WOLVES
DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 28 points in his San Antonio debut, and four of his teammates scored in double figures as the host Spurs held off the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-108 Wednesday in one of 11 of the night’s season openers.
DeRozan, acquired in the offseason trade that sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto, scored the final four points of the game after Minnesota rallied for a 108-108 tie on Jimmy Butler’s 3-pointer in the final minute.
LaMarcus Aldridge added 21 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for the Spurs, who also received 18 points from Rudy Gay.
Butler, who was away from the team for much of the preseason after requesting a trade, was in the starting lineup and scored 23 points in 31 minutes. Jeff Teague led the Timberwolves with 27 points, and Andrew Wiggins added 20.
RAPTORS 116, CAVALIERS 104
Kawhi Leonard scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in his Toronto debut in defeating visiting Cleveland.
Kyle Lowry had 27 points and eight assists for the Raptors. Fred VanVleet added 14 points, Pascal Siakam had 13 points and Danny Green chipped in with 11. Jonas Valanciunas grabbed 12 rebounds. Leonard and Green were acquired by Toronto from the Spurs in a July trade.

BUCKS 113, HORNETS 112
Giannis Antetokounmpo came within two assists of a triple-double as Milwaukee, in Mike Budenholzer’s first game as coach, held on to defeat host Charlotte, with James Borrego debuting as its coach.
Antetokounmpo, who finished with 25 points, 18 rebounds and eight assists, hit two free throws with 23.7 seconds remaining to give the Bucks the lead for good at 113-112. The Bucks then held on as Charlotte’s Kemba Walker missed a short jumper and Nicolas Batum missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
The Bucks led by as many as 20 on several occasions in the first half but had to come from behind in the final minute after Walker, who scored 41 points, rallied the Hornets. He hit two free throws with 36.3 seconds left for a 112-111 Charlotte lead.
KNICKS 126, HAWKS 107
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 16 of his game-high 31 points during host New York’s 49-point second quarter in an easy win over Atlanta.

Kaya to take on Stallion in Copa Paulino Alcantara semis

KAYA FC-Iloilo will take on Stallion Laguna FC in the semifinals of the Copa Paulino Alcantara with home field advantage.
Set for Sunday, Oct. 21, Kaya will host Stallion at the Iloilo Sports Complex in their knockout semifinal match to determine who advances to the final later this month.
Kaya sealed home field advantage after it defeated JPV Marikina FC, 1-0, on Wednesday to top Group B of the Copa and set up a date with Group A second-running team Stallion.
Robert Lopez Mendy provided the marginal goal in Kaya’s win over JPV at the Philippine Football Federation Artificial Turf Pitch in Carmona, Cavite, finding the bottom of the net at the seventh minute of the contest.
Mr. Lopez Mendy was set up by Jalsor Soriano and the Senegalese striker responded accordingly by calmly slipping the ball past JPV keeper Nelson Gasic to give his team the lead.
The two teams battled hard the rest of the way but JPV just could not get the breakthrough it needed to slump to the defeat and, in the process, hand group leadership to Kaya heading into the semifinals.
“It was a hard-fought battle to get the number one spot, but we’re happy that the objective was met. We’ll be playing the semifinals in Iloilo on Sunday,” said a pleased Kaya coach Noel Marcaida after the match.
He was quick to say though that work still needs to be done if they are to go deeper in the tournament and vie for a spot in the 2019 AFC Cup.
Playing in Iloilo once again after some time, Mr. Marcaida said they are excited to be back in action in front of their home fans and vowed to prepare hard and play well come Sunday.
“It’s been a long while not playing in Iloilo, and all the Ilonggos are expecting us to come back. We’re happy, we’re hungry and we can’t wait to play in Iloilo,” the Kaya coach said.
Kickoff of the Kaya-Stallion match is 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, playing in the other semifinal bracket are Davao Aguilas FC and JPV Marikina.
Davao secured the top spot in Group A with a 4-0 victory over Stallion also on Wednesday at the Biñan Football Stadium.
Phil Younghusband and Sungmin Kim each had a brace to tow their team to the top spot. — Michael Angelo S. Murillo
