THE World Bank Group named Ndiamé Diop as its new country director for Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand starting Wednesday.
In a statement Wednesday, the World Bank said the appointment of Mr. Diop, a Senegalese national, took effect July 1.
“I’m very excited to take this role of Country Director for Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. These are among the most dynamic economies in East Asia with a strong track record of economic reforms and achievements. The economic security of the middle class and the progress in poverty reduction are, however, being seriously threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic,” he was quoted as saying.
Mr. Diop was the bank’s practice manager for macroeconomics, trade and investment for East Asia and the Pacific, an office which provides technical and strategic guidance to the bank’s economic team in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
He has served as the bank’s lead economist for Indonesia, Jordan and Lebanon as well as the World Bank’s resident representative in Tunisia. — Beatrice M. Laforga
