Artist photographer Kidlat de Guia dies in Spain
VISUAL artist and photographer Kidlat de Guia, son of National Artist for Film Kidlat Tahimik, died on March 9 in Madrid, Spain, his brother, Kawayan de Guia, confirmed in a Facebook post on March 10.
The family had been together in Spain for an exhibit of their father’s works at the Palacio De Cristal.
Kawayan de Guia posted a picture on Facebook, taken 12 hours “before his departure,” he wrote. The picture was accompanied by the caption: “To you.. my brother, our brother, our friend, our partner in crime, the playful eye, the comfort zone, the bearer of good and bad news … you … my friend… you! the back bone. My love, our love, love…”
Kidlat de Guia, the eldest son of Kidlat Tahimik (né Eric de Guia) and artist and academic Katrin de Guia, also worked in the creative fields of his parents. In his own capacity, he was known for his art photography — he would manipulate photographs he had taken to create striking pieces.
A 2019 post from Galerie Stephanie says, “de Guia mixes different mediums with contemporary and traditional art-making techniques.”
His IMDb page lists him as an actor in one of his father’s films, Sinong lumikha ng yoyo? Sinong lumikha ng moon buggy?, as well as an editor and cinematographer on 2018’s Lakbayan, among other projects in film. — JLG
