Hellboy
FROM the pages of Mike Mignola’s work, Hellboy is back and called to battle a trio of rampaging giants in the English countryside. There he discovers Nimue, the Blood Queen who is thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Directed by Neil Marshall, the movie stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, and Daniel Dae Kim. Owen Gleiberman of Variety writes: “It’s lunging to be a badass hard-R epic, but it’s basically a pile of origin-story gobbledygook, frenetic and undercooked, full of limb-hacking, eye-gouging monster battles as well as an atmosphere of apocalyptic grunge that signifies next to nothing.” It currently has a dismal score of 11% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Breakthrough
BASED on a true story, the film narrates how a 14-year-old boy’s accident leads his mother to keep her strength and be steadfast belief in prayers for her son’s recovery. Directed by Roxann Dawson, the film stars Topher Grace, Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Dennis Haysbert, and Marcel Ruiz. The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber writes: “A note of predictability is the film’s most obvious flaw and probably the underlying weakness of most faith-based movies. Despite the touches of obviousness, Breakthrough is skillful enough to stir strong emotion in both devout and skeptical audiences.”

Greta
NAIVE Frances finds a lost handbag in the New York City subway and returns it to its owner, a widowed French piano teacher, Greta. They become close — and then Frances finds out that Greta’s life is not what it seems. Directed by Neil Jordan, the film stars Isabelle Huppert, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Maika Monroe. Entertainment Weekly’s Leah Greenblatt writes, “Greta is essentially a gleeful B-movie tricked out with A-level talent, which doesn’t mean it isn’t fun — at least until the whole thing essentially runs out of narrative road, and any semblance of new ideas.”

Missing Link
IN this animated feature, Mr. Link recruits Sir Lionel Frost to go on a quest for his long lost relatives in the valley of Shangri-la. Joined by adventurer Adelina Fortnight, they travel the world and help a new friend. Directed by Chris Butler, the film features the voices of Zoe Saldana, Timothy Olyphant, Hugh Jackman, and Zach Galifianakis. The Guardian’s Cath Clarke writes, “It’s a feast of a movie with dazzling visuals and terrifically acted by the voice cast.” The film has a high 89% score on movie aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

REJECTED after proposing to his girlfriend, a man spots a woman who is about to jump from a bridge. He offers his help and convinces her to go on a roadtrip with him. They exchange no personal information — not even their names. She calls her Elvis, he calls her Madonna. Directed by Nikko Andrew Arcega, the film stars Sachzna Laparan, Dino Imperial, Matt Evans, Kiray Celis, and Epy Quizon.
