Customs shreds ukay-ukay worth P800,000
The Bureau of Customs-Port of Subic destroyed P800,000 worth of used clothing, locally known as ukay-ukay, on Friday, July 13 in Guiguinto, Bulacan.
The said contraband was shredded and disposed of at the facility of EPY-ECO Auction and Waste Disposal Services — the accredited service provider of the Port of Subic for the condemnation of contrabands and expired goods.
The destruction of the seized goods was led by the District Collector of the Port of Subic, Segundo Sigmundfreud Z. Barte, who said that while the commercial proliferation of ukay-ukay is popular, Republic Act 4653 prohibits the importation thereof, to safeguard public health.
Under Commissioner Isidro S. Lapena’s orders, the bureau has been making public the condemnation of seized goods as part of its transparency efforts.
