Alsons Power turning diesel plant into solar farm

ALSONS POWER, the power business unit of the Alcantara Group, is seeking to transform its diesel power plant in Alabel, Sarangani into a solar power facility amid its renewable energy push.
In a statement on Wednesday, the company said it will turn its 55-megawatt (MW) diesel power plant into a 98.7-MW solar power facility starting in the second quarter of 2026.
For this initiative, Alsons Power has tapped Chinese engineering, procurement, and construction firms Sinohydro Corp. Limited and Powerchina Philippines Corp. to lead the development of the first phase.
Development activities for Phase 2 are progressing, including the evaluation of integrated solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system (BESS) configurations.
According to the company, the planned BESS component is expected to “enhance grid stability, support peak shaving, and address solar intermittency.”
Once completed by September 2027, the solar facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power nearly 104,000 homes.
“We are excited to begin the transition of our fossil fuel assets into renewable energy facilities,” said Alsons Power Chief Executive Officer Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara. “This marks more than the start of a major project. It is a decisive step toward a more diversified energy portfolio and a more energy-secure future.” — Sheldeen Joy Talavera
