Tropical depression Emong might make landfall in Batanes before exiting PHL Tuesday morning
TROPICAL DEPRESSION Emong could make landfall Monday evening in the Batanes-Babuyan Islands area before exiting the Philippines Tuesday morning, according to weather bureau PAGASA.
Tropical wind signal no. 1 was up over Batanes and the northeastern portion of Cagayan province in the northern part of Luzon.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the alert signal might be raised to level 2 Monday night.
The agency said Emong may intensify into a tropical storm before leaving the country, then weaken back into a tropical depression after passing south of southern Taiwan.
“Emong may likely exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow (Tuesday) early morning and will continue moving northwestward towards Fujian, China,” PAGASA said in its 5 p.m. Monday update.
As of 4:00 p.m. Monday, the center of Emong was estimated at 215 kilometers (kms) east-northeast of Calayan, Cagayan.
It was moving at 45 kms per hour with maximum sustained winds of 55 kms/h near the center and gustiness of up to 702 kms/h.
