Record gold prices shift Indian festive demand toward coins over jewelry

MUMBAI — Soaring gold prices led Indian buyers to choose coins and bars over jewelry during the Dhanteras festival on Saturday, fueled by hopes that the precious metal’s glittering rally would continue, industry officials told Reuters.

Dhanteras, which marks the start of the five-day Diwali festival of lights, is considered auspicious for buying gold and is one of the busiest gold-buying days in the world’s second-biggest consumer of the metal.

Overall gold sales during Dhanteras were 10-15% lower in volume terms compared to last year, but total value rose sharply due to higher prices, said Rajesh Rokde, chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council.

“Gold jewelry demand took a hit with record-high prices, dropping nearly 30% from last year, but coins and bars were flying off the shelves,” Surendra Mehta, secretary at the India Bullion and Jewellers Association, said.

In India, buyers typically pay 10-20% of the gold price as manufacturing charges for jewelry, making it even more expensive than buying gold coins.

Local gold prices closed at 127,008 rupees per 10 grams on Friday after hitting a record high of 132,294 rupees, marking an increase of more than 60% since last year’s Dhanteras. India’s NSE Nifty 50 share index has risen about 5% during the period.

Facing record price surges, the industry is offering healthy discounts on jewelry making to maintain strong gold-buying interest throughout the festive and upcoming wedding seasons, said Sachin Jain, chief executive officer of the World Gold Council’s Indian operations.

Indian dealers were last week quoting a premium XAU-IN-PREM of up to $25 per ounce over official domestic prices, inclusive of 6% import and 3% sales levies, the highest in more than a decade.

Demand for silver coins, bars and jewelry meanwhile was strong this year, driven by the metal’s stellar price rally, said Saurabh Gadgil, chairman of PNG Jewellers. Investors believe silver could outperform gold, dealers said.

Higher returns from precious metals have been attracting strong inflows into physically backed gold and silver exchange-traded funds in recent months.

“With jewelry stores open till midnight and Dhanteras continuing into tomorrow afternoon, we expect buying momentum to carry forward,” said Rokde of GJC. — Reuters

Pakistan and Afghanistan agree to immediate ceasefire after peace talks in Doha

STOCK IMAGE | Image by Gordon Johnson from Pixabay

ISLAMABAD/KABUL — Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire during talks in Doha after a week of fierce border clashes that were the worst violence between the two countries since the Taliban seized power in Kabul in 2021.

The ceasefire between the South Asian neighbors “has been finalized,” Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif posted on X on Sunday, saying both sides would meet again on Oct. 25 in Istanbul to discuss “detailed matters.”

Qatar’s foreign ministry, which mediated Saturday’s talks along with Turkey, said the follow-up meetings were meant “to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and verify its implementation in a reliable and sustainable manner.”

MILITANT ATTACKS, AIRSTRIKES
Pakistan and Afghanistan are seeking a way forward after the clashes killed dozens and wounded hundreds. The talks were led by Asif and his Afghan counterpart, Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob, both sides said.

The ground fighting between the one-time allies and Pakistani airstrikes across their contested 2,600-km (1,600-mile) frontier were triggered after Islamabad demanded that Kabul rein in militants who had stepped up attacks in Pakistan, saying they operated from havens in Afghanistan.

The Taliban denies giving haven to militants to attack Pakistan and accuses the Pakistani military of spreading misinformation about Afghanistan and sheltering Islamic State-linked militants to undermine its stability and sovereignty. Islamabad denies the accusations.

Militants have been waging a war for years against the Pakistani state in a bid to overthrow the government and replace it with their strict brand of Islamic governance.

On Friday, a suicide attack near the border killed seven Pakistani soldiers and wounded 13, security officials said.

“The Afghan regime must rein in the proxies who have sanctuaries in Afghanistan and are using Afghan soil to perpetrate heinous attacks inside Pakistan,” the Pakistan Army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, said on Saturday, addressing a graduation ceremony of cadets.

AFGHANISTAN WITHDRAWS FROM CRICKET SERIES OVER STRIKES
Afghan government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Pakistan had conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan hours after the ceasefire, which began on Wednesday, was extended on Friday for as long as the Doha talks continued.

He said the attacks targeted civilians, adding that Kabul reserved the right to respond but that Afghan fighters had been directed to refrain from retaliating to respect the negotiating team.

Afghanistan withdrew from the cricket Twenty20 international tri-series in Pakistan next month after the death of three local cricketers that the Afghanistan Cricket Board said were due to military strikes in Paktika province.

Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a post on X on Saturday that Pakistan had struck “verified” camps of Islamist militants along the border areas and rejected that the strikes had targeted civilians.

He said militants had attempted to launch multiple attacks inside Pakistan during the ceasefire period.

He said more than 100 militants were killed by Pakistani security forces, the majority of them in strikes against a militant group that he said had carried out Friday’s suicide attack on the military camp.

‘No Kings’ protests draw large crowds in US cities to decry Trump

Protesters spanning all age groups took to the streets en masse for “No Kings” rallies across the United States on Saturday, denouncing what they view as authoritarian tendencies and unbridled corruption of US President Donald J. Trump.

Organizers expected millions of people to turn out by day’s end at more than 2,600 planned rallies in major cities, small towns and suburbs, challenging a Trump-led agenda that has reshaped the government and upended democratic norms with unprecedented speed since he took office in January.

By all accounts, the demonstrations were largely festive, often featuring inflatable characters and marchers dressed in costumes. The demographically mixed crowds included parents pushing youngsters in strollers alongside retirees and people with pets in tow.

Little, if any, lawlessness was reported.

DISILLUSIONED WITH TRUMP
“There is nothing more American than saying, ‘We don’t have kings’ and exercising our right to peacefully protest,” said Leah Greenberg, co-founder of Indivisible, a progressive organization that led planning of Saturday’s events.

Demonstrators filled Times Square in New York City, where police said they made “zero protest-related arrests” even as more than 100,000 people rallied peacefully across all five boroughs.

Events in Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Denver, Chicago and Seattle also drew crowds that each appeared to encompass thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people.

On the West Coast, more than a dozen rallies occurred around the Los Angeles area, including the primary site downtown. In Seattle, demonstrators filled a parade route that stretched for more than a mile from downtown through the Seattle Center plaza around the city’s landmark Space Needle. More than 25,000 protested peacefully in San Diego, police said.

The protests reflected growing unease among many Americans, mainly on the ideological left, with developments such as the criminal prosecution of Mr. Trump’s perceived political enemies, his militarized immigration crackdown and the sending of National Guard troops into US cities — a move Mr. Trump has said was aimed at fighting crime and protecting immigration agents.

As his administration has tried to rapidly implement its policies, Mr. Trump has installed inexperienced loyalists throughout the ranks of his administration and sought to apply pressure on the news media, law firms and universities.

Saturday’s rallies were boisterous but orderly, with police largely keeping a low profile.

Demonstrators filled a street in Washington, D.C., to march toward the US Capitol, chanting and carrying signs, US flags and balloons, as a carnival-like atmosphere prevailed.

Aliston Elliot, wearing a Statue of Liberty headpiece and holding a “No Wannabe Dictators” sign, said: “We want to show our support for democracy and fighting for what is right. I’m against the overreach of power.”

In downtown Houston, US Marine Corps veteran Daniel Aboyte Gamez, 30, joined a crowd that officials said numbered about 5,000 at city hall.

“I don’t understand what’s going on in this nation right now,” said Mr. Gamez, who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

‘FORMER REPUBLICAN’
Kevin Brice, 70, a military veteran among thousands of protesters streaming into the riverfront of Portland, Oregon, wore a black sweatshirt emblazoned with the slogan “No Kings since 1776” — referring to the year of the Declaration of Independence.

“Everything that I thought that I stood for while I was serving in the military seems to be at risk,” Mr. Brice said. “So even though I’m a lifelong Republican, I don’t support the direction the party is going.”

Steve Klopp, 74, a Houston-based oil industry retiree, expressed similar sentiments as he wore a shirt printed with the words “Former Republican.”

“I’ve been a Republican forever,” Mr. Klopp said. “My family’s been Republican forever and ever. And the idea that one individual could have turned me away from the Republican Party is insane.”

Kelly Kinsella, 38, standing among several thousand people outside the Colorado statehouse in Denver, was dressed as Lady Liberty with bloody tears dripping down her face.

“Everyone comes to work stressed, and it’s because of the current conditions,” said Ms. Kinsella, who said she was motivated to turn out largely because of renewed inflation that she blamed on Mr. Trump’s tariff policies.

Mr. Trump has said little about Saturday’s protests. But in an interview with Fox Business aired on Friday he said that “they’re referring to me as a king — I’m not a king.”

While the Democratic Party has coped with internal divisions since Mr. Trump won re-election last year, party establishment figures such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and progressive firebrands like US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez both voiced support for the “No Kings” movement.

Saturday’s protests were aimed at building on momentum gained from more than 2,000 “No Kings” protests that were staged on June 14, coinciding with Mr. Trump’s 79th birthday and a rare military parade in Washington.

HOUSE SPEAKER CALLS PROTESTS ANTI-AMERICAN
House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, on Friday echoed a common refrain among his party, labeling the “No Kings” protests “the hate America rally.”

Other Republicans have accused protest organizers of stoking an atmosphere that they said might spur political violence, especially in the wake of the September assassination of right-wing activist and Mr. Trump ally Charlie Kirk.

Vice President JD Vance, speaking on Saturday to a gathering of Marines at Camp Pendleton in Southern California, made no mention of the protests. But he criticized Democrats over the government shutdown that began early this month in a partisan standoff over federal appropriations.

Dana Fisher, an American University professor in Washington and author of several books on political activism, predicted that Saturday could see one of the largest protest turnouts in modern US history.

She expected that over 3 million people would take part based on registrations and participation in the June events. Overall turnout for the June 14 rallies was estimated at 4 million to 6 million, according to a crowd-sourcing analysis published by prominent data journalist G. Elliott Morris. — Reuters

Japan’s LDP, Ishin agree to form coalition government, Kyodo says

TOKYO — Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party have broadly agreed to form a coalition government, setting the stage for the country’s first female prime minister, Kyodo news agency reported on Sunday.

Sanae Takaichi, leader of the conservative LDP, and Hirofumi Yoshimura, head of the smaller right-leaning group known as Ishin, are set to sign an agreement sealing their alliance on Monday, Kyodo said.

Calls to the LDP and Ishin headquarters to seek comment went unanswered outside business hours.

ALLIANCE MAY BE SHAKIER THAN PREVIOUS COALITION
Ishin’s co-head, Fumitake Fujita, raised expectations for a deal on Friday, saying the two parties had made “big progress” in coalition talks.

Ishin lawmakers will vote for Ms. Takaichi in an election to choose the prime minister in parliament on Tuesday, but the party does not plan to send ministers to Takaichi’s cabinet, at least initially, Kyodo said.

That would fall short of the full-fledged alliance the LDP maintained with the Komeito party until the junior partner quit the coalition this month, raising concern over the stability of the forthcoming government.

Ms. Takaichi’s path to succeed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had seemed all but certain after she won the presidency of the long-ruling LDP early this month. But then Komeito quit their 26-year coalition, setting off a flurry of negotiations with rival parties to select the next premier.

In an effort to get Ishin on board, the LDP offered to keep working towards banning donations from companies and other organizations and exempting food items from Japan’s sales tax, Kyodo said.

Ishin has proposed eliminating the tax on food items for two years.

Ms. Takaichi, a fiscal dove, has called for higher spending and tax cuts to cushion consumers from rising inflation and has criticized the Bank of Japan’s decision to raise interest rates.

She favors revising Japan’s pacifist postwar constitution to recognize the role of its expanding military.

Ms. Takaichi is a regular visitor to the Yasukuni shrine honoring Japan’s war dead — including some executed war criminals — and is viewed by some Asian neighbors as a symbol of the nation’s past militarism. — Reuters

Filipinas U17 top Group A, qualify for AFC Asian Cup

FILIPINAS UNDER 17 FOOTBALL TEAM — THE-AFC.COM

THE PHILIPPINES clinched its spot in next year’s AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup in grand fashion, shutting out all three opponents to rule Group A of the Qualifiers in Dushanbe.

After a smashing 5-0 whitewash of Syria and a 2-0 blanking of host Tajikistan, the Young Filipinas continued their charge and roared past final opponent Malaysia, 4-0.

Luna Rivera (sixth minute), Chiara Mizzo (23rd), Aiselyn Sia (59th) gave the Philippines a 3-nil edge before Louraine Evangelista forced Nur Dania to an own goal 10 minutes later to seal the romp.

It was a perfect campaign for the Young Filipinas, who chalked up the maximum nine points, scoring 11 goals and conceding none, to beat the Malaysians (six points on two wins and one loss) for No. 1 and the lone ticket to the U17 WAC in Suzhou, China that’s at stake in the Tajikistan side of the qualifiers.

This will be the second Asian appearance for the Filipinas U17, who joined the hosts, defending champion North Korea, 2024 runnerup Japan, 2024 third placer South Korea, and fellow group winners Lebanon, Myanmar, Vietnam, Australia, Thailand, India and Chinese-Taipei in the 2026 staging. — Olmin Leyba

Shohei Ohtani leaves sporting world in awe as the Los Angeles Dodgers return to World Series

SHOHEI OHTANI’S otherworldly performance that propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers back to the World Series has left the sporting world in awe, with players and legends alike marvelling at what may have been the greatest single-game display in Major League Baseball (MLB) history.

In a Friday night masterpiece, Ohtani flashed his dominance on both sides of the ball, hitting three homers and pitching six scoreless innings while striking out 10 batters to complete a four-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers.

“That was probably the greatest postseason performance of all time,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “There’s been a lot of postseason games. And there’s a reason why he’s the greatest player on the planet.”

Dodgers teammate Mookie Betts perhaps captured it best: “It’s like we’re the Chicago Bulls, and he’s Michael Jordan.”

Ohtani wasted no time making his presence felt in Friday’s game. He walked the first batter he faced but then struck out a trio of Milwaukee batters before leading off the bottom of the first inning with a home run.

His next homer was a majestic jaw-dropping solo blast that he hit completely out of Dodger Stadium in the fourth inning to put the home side ahead 4-0 before adding another in the seventh.

The Japanese two-way sensation achieved numerous firsts on Friday, becoming the first player with three homers and 10 strikeouts as a pitcher in the same game, the first pitcher with multiple home runs in a playoff contest, and first pitcher to hit a leadoff homer in any MLB game.

“Gotta be one of the greatest athletic performances in history. Never seen anything like Shohei,” three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt wrote on X.

Dodgers part-owner Magic Johnson, who produced his share of standout games during a Hall of Fame NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers, also chimed in after watching a dominant Ohtani allow just two hits in Friday’s game.

“We’ve seen a baseball player hit three HRs in a Playoff game and we’ve seen a pitcher throw a two hitter and 10 strikeouts in a Playoff game — but we’ve never seen one player do both like Shohei Ohtani did tonight!” wrote Johnson.

American tennis great Billie Jean King, also a part owner of the Dodgers, posted a photo on X of her, partner Ilana Kloss and Ohtani on the field after the game with all three smiling and wearing National League Champions T-shirts.

“We were so fortunate to have witnessed the greatest performance by Shohei Ohtani as both a pitcher and hitter: 10 strikeouts and 3 home runs. And he’s just getting started,” King wrote in the social media post.

After being named National League Championship Series (NLCS) Most Valuable Player, Ohtani remained characteristically humble.

“We won it as a team, and this was really a team effort,” he said through his interpreter. “So, I hope everybody in LA and Japan and all over the world could enjoy a really good sake.”

The reigning champion Dodgers will face either the Seattle Mariners or Toronto Blue Jays in the World Series. The Mariners lead the Blue Jays 3-2 in the American League Championship Series and can wrap up the series with a win Sunday in Toronto. — Reuters

Caitlin Clark ‘honored’ to return to The Annika pro-am

CAITLIN CLARK fever will return to the LPGA Tour next month when the WNBA superstar makes another appearance at The Annika pro-am in Belleair, Fla.

Thousands of fans lined the fairways last year to watch the Indiana Fever guard compete in the event. One of Clark’s many endorsement deals is with Gainbridge, the presenting sponsor of The Annika event.

“I had an amazing time at The Annika last November and participating in the pro-am alongside Nelly Korda and Annika Sorenstam, two of the best in the game,” Clark said in a news release on Thursday. “I’m honored to be an ambassador for a company in Gainbridge that is so committed to elevating women’s sports. I can’t wait to return to Tampa in November to play in the Pro-Am with the best women golfers in the world.”

Clark played nine holes with Korda and nine with Sorenstam at last year’s competition.

Clark, 23, is coming off a disappointing second season in the WNBA, limited to just 13 games due to injuries that ultimately ended her season in July. Reuters

Historic Ohtani

On a cool night at Dodger Stadium, Shohei Ohtani put up a show that defied imagination. In Game Four of the National League Championship Series, stalwarts of the blue and white swept the Brewers and booked a second consecutive trip to the World Series by riding on the coattails of the three-time Most Valuable Player awardee. The latter pitched six shutout innings, struck out 10, and hit three home runs. Needless to say, he was the first pitcher in postseason history to post the eye-popping stats in a single outing. In a sport obsessed with specialization, he was everything everywhere all at once: ace and slugger, spectacle and certainty.

For much of the National League Championship Series, Ohtani had seemed off-balance. And so unnerved was he that he saw fit to take extra batting practice in the tunnels of American Family Field. He was in a certified slump, and appeared bent on finding rhythm even as the Dodgers kept winning. Then, the other day, it all returned in a surge of power that set precedent. No one had ever combined a double-digit strikeout line with a three-homer effort, let alone in October. Manager Dave Roberts called it “the greatest night in baseball history,” and his other charges readily agreed. They bore witness to dominance unlike any performance they were hitherto privy to: a two-way act that made perfect sense in and of itself.

Significantly, Ohtani’s historic bid also reframed the Dodgers themselves. Their pitching staff had already been airtight, compiling a microscopic 0.63 earned run average through the series. And, under the circumstances, his remarkable turn bordered on the ridiculously unfair. Injuries and bullpen doubts that shadowed them for most of the regular season suddenly became irrelevant. In making short work of the Brewers, they became the first defending champions in 16 years to return to the Fall Classic.

To be sure, baseball, even at its most mythic, is still a team sport. Ohtani may be its frontispiece, but the Dodgers’ foundational designs expose his brilliance as equal parts a miracle and a plan fulfilled. Already, historians are ranking his brilliant night alongside the sport’s greatest feats. And rightly so. That said, its true value is in its capacity to stand as proof that the game, already well over a century old, can still surprise itself: for all its supposed predictability, one player can apparently stretch its limits. He didn’t just win a pennant; he expanded the borders of what the best of the best can test.

Teacher education roadmap seeks to address specialization mismatch

The Teacher Education Council (TEC) on Thursday launched a ten-year roadmap that seeks to strengthen teacher education in the Philippines. — ALMIRA S. MARTINEZ

The Teacher Education Council (TEC) launched a ten-year teacher education roadmap on Thursday, which includes policy recommendations addressing the specialization and assignment mismatches among educators.

“The intention of this is to establish the right and clear direction for the country, specifically, the path we will take in teacher education,” TEC Office of the Secretariat Executive Director V Jennie V. Jocson told BusinessWorld in an interview.

“This includes the pathway of our teachers from pre-service and in-service all the way to their career progression,” she added.

To help address one of the challenges faced by Filipino teachers, the roadmap aims to “reshape and reframe” the specializations of educators who experience misalignment with their expertise.

“For example, the teacher has a bachelor’s degree specializing in English but has been teaching other subjects; she must be redirected to a new specialization,” Ms. Jocson told reporters.

A study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) revealed that only 25% of teachers in the country are teaching subjects aligned fully with their academic background. Meanwhile, 32% are “partially matched” to teach specialized and non-specialized subjects.

The study also underscored that 43% of teachers are assigned to teach subjects despite lacking formal training or credentials.

A separate report by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) noted that the teacher-subject mismatch remains widespread in the country, with 62% of public high school teachers assigned to teach beyond their area of expertise.

The Department of Education’s (DepEd) hiring policy, which prioritizes teacher availability over subject-matter proficiency, caused the longstanding issue, according to the commission.

The four pillars of the decade-long plan target to further promote the teaching profession, strengthen pre-service education, invest in the career progression of teachers, and broaden the impact of teacher education. Through the roadmap, the council seeks to create a collaborative effort in addressing the challenges faced by teachers.

“Some government programs operate in silos with no communication, no clear direction, and no cohesive leadership,” she said. “What we’re hoping with this roadmap is that, through the leadership of the Teacher Education Council, there will be open dialogue and meaningful discussions on teacher education programs.”Almira Louise S. PHIVOLCS warns against going up to a higher floor during an earthquake

PHILSTAR FILE PHOTO

The state seismology agency debunked the popular belief that people on higher floors of a building should move upward during an earthquake, noting that evacuating to an open field remains the safest option.

The idea suggests that during an earthquake, people on higher floors should move upward toward the rooftop to make rescue easier if the building completely collapses.

“I know we see that in the movies. But we cannot predict how a building will collapse,” Charmaine V. Villamil, Senior Science Research Specialist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), said in a Zoom interview in a mix of English and Tagalog.

During an earthquake, she said, it is still ideal to do the duck, cover, and hold, while the shaking is ongoing.

After the shaking stops and it is deemed safe, calmly leave the building and move to an open area away from structures and potential falling debris.

In residential houses, preparedness for earthquakes is also important, she said — not only by having a go-bag kit and knowing common earthquake drills, but also by being equipped with accurate information.

In the light of recent earthquakes, the interior department on Thursday urged all local chief executives to employ earthquake and tsunami preparedness.

Local government engineering teams were urged to inspect critical infrastructure and assess the reoccupation of damaged structures.

Meanwhile, Department of Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa on Tuesday assured that DOH hospitals are expected to withstand the “Big One” in Metro Manila, which could generate at least a magnitude 7.2 earthquake.

In some local government units, such as in Laguna, they have implemented a suspension of classes as a precautionary measure following the recent earthquakes.

Governor Marisol “Sol” Castillo Aragones-Sampelo said the suspension, which runs from October 14 to 31, covers all face-to-face classes in both public and private schools across the province.

During the two-week suspension period, the provincial government will conduct inspections to assess the structural integrity of school buildings. Edg Adrian A. Eva

PHIVOLCS: Surigao quake triggered by Philippine Trench, unrelated to Davao tremors

PHIVOLCS-DOST FB PAGE

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck offshore of General Luna, Surigao del Norte, a few hours ago was generated by the Philippine Trench but is not related to the two strong tremors that occurred in Davao Del Norte last week, according to the state seismologist.

“Although both were generated by the Philippine Trench, the two earthquakes are unrelated,” Charmaine V. Villamil, Senior Science Research Specialist at the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), said in a Zoom interview in a mix of English and Tagalog.

“The trench is long, and the earthquakes happened in separate segments of the trench,” Ms. Villamil said.

According to PHIVOLCS, the Philippine Trench is a subduction zone located along the eastern coast of the country, extending over 1,300 kilometers in length and about 30 kilometers wide, stretching from Bicol to the Visayas and Mindanao.

Due to its length and being one of the six active trenches in the country, the trench is likely to generate subsequent, and sometimes strong, earthquakes, as is the case with the other active trenches, Ms. Villamil said.

Regarding various reports suggesting that recent earthquakes might trigger Metro Manila’s ‘Big One,’ Ms. Villamil said it will not, as the quake is expected to be caused by the West Valley Fault.

The fault stretches over 100 kilometers, passing through highly populated areas from Bulacan and parts of Metro Manila to Calamba in Laguna.

“Even with technology in other countries, they still cannot predict when an earthquake will occur. We should only rely on reliable sources like PHIVOLCS,” Ms. Villamil said.

PHIVOLCS said the fault experienced its last earthquake in 1658 and is now ripe for a strong and destructive quake, following its 200- to 400-year earthquake cycle.

If Metro Manila’s Big One occurs, it could reach a magnitude of 7.2 and produce an intensity of VIII, stronger than the quakes felt in Davao and Cebu.

Instead of being swayed into fear, Ms. Villamil said, preparation is king in the case of the Big One in Metro Manila, and it goes beyond just preparing a ‘Go Bag Kit’ and conducting earthquake drills.

“Preparation must be a way of life, as simple as identifying the obstacles in your house just in case of an earthquake,’ she said.

As the usual cause of death in earthquakes is falling debris, Ms. Villamil also reminded that houses and buildings must be structurally sound to withstand at least a magnitude 7.2 quake.

Also, PHIVOLCS reported that more than 113 aftershocks have been recorded following the Surigao del Norte quake, ranging from magnitude 1.2 to 4.4, as of 8:00 a.m. Edg Adrian A. Eva
