P.J. O’Rourke, renowned political satirist and journalist, 74

P. J. O’Rourke — JAMES KEGLEY /GROVEATLANTIC.COM

P.J. O’Rourke, the American journalist, political satirist, and best-selling author who rose to fame as editor-in-chief of the now-defunct humor magazine National Lampoon, has died at the age of 74.

Grove Atlantic, a New York-based publisher of his books, confirmed that he passed away Tuesday morning after a battle with lung cancer.

“P.J. was one of the major voices of his generation. He was also a close friend and partner for more than 40 years,” said Grove Atlantic CEO and publisher Morgan Entrekin, adding that O’Rourke played a key role in helping the company stay independent.

“His insightful reporting, verbal acuity and gift at writing laugh-out-loud prose were unparalleled.”

Patrick Jake O’Rourke authored more than 20 books whose topics included politics, economics and cars. Two of them topped the New York Times Bestsellers list: Parliament of Whores, in which he used humor to explain the inner workings of Washington, D.C., and Give War a Chance, a book about international conflict and crisis.

His work also appeared in publications like Rolling Stone, The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Beast, among others.

After growing up in Toledo, Ohio and graduating from Miami University in Ohio, Mr. O’Rourke left the Midwest for the East Coast to attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He launched his writing career at small newspapers in Baltimore and New York.

Mr. O’Rourke joined National Lampoon in the early 1970s and later assumed the roles of managing editor and editor in chief. Later in his career he was the H.L. Mencken Research Fellow at Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, and a panelist on the NPR’s weekly current events quiz show, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me.

He is survived by his wife, Tina O’Rourke, and three children, according to his publisher. —  Reuters

No Ra Gun-A for South Korea; no Kai Sotto for Gilas

RA GUN-A (20) of South Korea and Kai Sotto of Gilas — FIBA

GILAS Pilipinas’ rival South Korea is in danger of missing the services of naturalized player Ra Gun-A due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) protocols a week before the first window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Mr. Gun-A, who plays for Jeonju KCC Egis in the KBL, yielded a positive COVID-19 result in a rapid antigen test on Wednesday and has quickly undergone a confirmatory RT-PCR test according to a report by Sports Chosun.

The result of Mr. Gun-A, also known as Ricardo Ratliffe, is expected to be out today as Korean Basketball League (KBL) faces a spike of COVID-19 cases in the association.

Also waiting for a confirmatory result is Kim Jong Kyu (Wonju DB Promy) while Kim Sun Hyung (Seoul SK Knights) and Lee Woo Seok (Ulsan Hyundai) are already under quarantine after their positive tests earlier this week.

South Korea, which released a 14-man pool for the WC qualifiers, is set to enter a brief bubble camp tomorrow before it departs for the Philippines next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kai Sotto’s former NBA G League Ignite teammate Princepal Singh has been included in the 22-man pool of India as New Zealand features two former UAAP players in its 21-man pool.

For Gilas that will have no Mr. Sotto in the meantime, coach Chot Reyes said the 21-man pool submitted to International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is already final.

“Yes, we can’t add anymore,” Mr. Reyes told The STAR in the pool led by a dozen TnT players plus young guns Thirdy Ravena, Dwight Ramos and naturalized player Ange Kouame.

BSP bullish on inclusion goal as basic deposit, e-money accounts rise

THE CENTRAL BANK chief said more Filipinos are now part of the formal financial system. — BW FILE PHOTO

THE CENTRAL BANK is bullish that its goal to have 70% of adult Filipinos be part of the financial system is achievable amid the growth in basic deposit and e-money account holders, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin E. Diokno said.

“We estimate that from 2020 to the third quarter of 2021, around 20 million unbanked adults have been onboarded to the financial system, based on the increase in the number of basic deposit accounts and active e-money accounts,” Mr. Diokno said at a briefing on Wednesday.

“So from 21 million banked adults in 2019, we estimate that about 41 million or 53% of adult Filipinos already have a transaction account as of the third quarter of 2021.”

“There is a strong likelihood that we’re going to meet our target to onboard 70% of adult Filipinos by 2023 [into the banked population], sooner rather than later,” he added.

Based on the 2019 Financial Inclusion Survey, only 29% of adult Filipinos are part of the banked population, leaving behind 51.2 million unbanked. Still, this improved from the 23% of Filipinos that were part of the banked population in 2017.

Mr. Diokno said the 2021 Financial Inclusion Survey will be released in May 2022.

He said 3.6 million new basic deposit accounts were recorded from the fourth quarter of 2019 to the third quarter of 2021. There were also seven million previously unbanked Filipinos that opened accounts with the Land Bank of the Philippines as the lender had co-located in registration areas for the National ID.

The basic deposit account was introduced in 2018 to encourage more Filipinos to become part of the financial system. It has a low opening amount capped at P100, no maintaining balance requirement, no dormancy charges and has a maximum balance limit of P50,000.

Meanwhile e-money accounts rose by 16.8 million from the end of 2019 to 2020, Mr. Diokno added.

Last month, the central bank unveiled its National Strategy for Financial Inclusion for 2022 to 2028. Mr. Diokno said this focuses on micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) and agriculture financing.

The BSP will look at MSMEs’ access to formal credit and guarantee coverage for loans, said Ellen Joyce L. Suficiencia, director at the BSP’s Financial Inclusion Office.

Under the updated strategy, the central bank will monitor not just the number of Filipinos with a bank account but also how many individuals have at least P10,000 in their savings and are covered by insurance.

The BSP will also monitor financial literacy, the use of digital financial services by mobile phone owners and the turnaround time for complaint resolution, Mr. Diokno said. — L.W.T. Noble

Medilines says profit growth at record 50% due to shift in products

MEDILINES Distributors, Inc. said it achieved record profit growth due to its “strategic shift in product mix,” after the company began selling medical consumables along with its medical equipment product line.

Without disclosing specific figures, the company said it logged a record 50% profit growth in 2021 from the previous year’s P103 million. Meanwhile, its unaudited gross revenues went up 10% to P1.6 billion.

“As the global healthcare system continues to take centerstage due to the pandemic, Medilines believes that the healthcare industry in the Philippines has plenty of room to grow,” Medilines Chairman Virgilio B. Villar said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We believe that both the government and private sectors will continue to demand for quality healthcare equipment to meet Western standards. Both sectors will also need to expand their facilities to cater to a growing population, especially in key cities nationwide,” he added.

Medilines distributed medical equipment for cancer therapy, dialysis, and diagnostic imaging, partnering with brands such as Philips (Netherlands), GE (US), and B. Braun (Germany).

It now also distributes medical equipment from Siemens Healthineers (Germany), Varian Medical Systems (US) and B. Braun Avitum (Germany).

The company said the over 50% profit growth was achieved after it forayed into the medical consumables business. It is targeting “to a balance of medical equipment and consumables mix.”

Sales grew by more than double after it began selling dialysis consumables, with sales growing to P200 million in 2021 from P60 million in 2020. Medilines said it is now aiming to have over P300 million in sales of its consumables products.

Meanwhile, its revenue growth is attributed to its delivery of cancer therapy equipment. Medilines said it delivered five cancer radiation therapy machines across the country in 2021.

The company said it installed linear accelerators (LINACs) in Manila’s Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Sacred Heart Medical Center in Angeles City, and Region I Medical Center in Dagupan. It delivered LINACs to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu and Cotabato Regional and Medical Center last December.

Medilines said the installation of the equipment at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center will be completed in the first quarter this year.

Medilines shares at the stock exchange went up 1.94% or two centavos on Wednesday to close at P1.05 apiece. — Keren Concepcion G. Valmonte

Family of woman killed on Rust set sues Alec Baldwin, others

ALEC BALDWIN/IMDB.COM

LOS ANGELES — The family of a woman killed during filming of the Western Rust filed a wrongful death lawsuit against actor Alec Baldwin and others on Tuesday, claiming they disregarded several standard industry practices meant to keep movie sets safe.

The civil suit was filed in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, on behalf of Matthew Hutchins, husband of late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and the couple’s nine-year-old son.

“The lawsuit names Alec Baldwin and others who are responsible for the safety on the set and whose reckless behavior and cost cutting led to the senseless and tragic death of Halyna Hutchins,” attorney Brian Panish said at a news conference in Los Angeles.

Halyna Hutchins was killed and director Joel Souza was wounded when a .45-caliber Colt revolver Mr. Baldwin was using during a rehearsal fired off a live bullet. The movie, on which Mr. Baldwin also served as a producer, was being filmed at Bonanza Creek Ranch outside Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Mr. Baldwin and other Rust producers, said, “Any claim that Alec was reckless is entirely false.”

The 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live actor has said he was told the gun was “cold,” an industry term meaning it is safe to use. “This protocol has worked on thousands of films, with millions of discharges, and there has never before been an incident on a set where an actual bullet harmed anyone,” Mr. Dyer said. “Actors should be able to rely on armorers and prop department professionals, as well as assistant directors, rather than deciding on their own when a gun is safe to use,” Mr. Dyer added.

But Mr. Panish said Mr. Baldwin bore “a significant portion of liability” because he shot the weapon that killed Halyna Hutchins.

The attorney showed an animated recreation of what he believed happened inside a church where actors were filming when the shooting occurred. Mr. Panish said he did not believe the weapon was defective. “The gun cannot fire unless the trigger is engaged and the hammer is back,” Mr. Panish said during the video. “So he had the gun. He says he pulled the hammer back. It fired. She was killed.”

Mr. Baldwin has said he pulled the gun’s hammer back but did not pull the trigger. The lawsuit said Mr. Baldwin had a responsibility to keep his finger away from the trigger and not operate the hammer during a rehearsal.

The incident remains under investigation by New Mexico authorities who are trying to determine how live ammunition made it onto the movie set. No criminal charges have been filed.

Mr. Panish said Mr. Baldwin should have personally checked the gun to ensure it did not contain live rounds, and that he should not have pointed it directly at a person.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages, named about two dozen defendants in addition to Mr. Baldwin, including armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed and assistant director David Halls. Representatives for Ms. Gutierrez Reed and Mr. Halls did not immediately respond to requests for comment. — Reuters

Kaspersky says ‘total security’ needed vs digital scams in PHL

By Arjay L. Balinbin, Senior Reporter

INTERNET security company Kaspersky formally introduced in the Philippines on Tuesday a protection package that promises a “complete, family-oriented defense” against cyberthreats.

“Practicing good cyber hygiene includes considering dependable software protection even before an unfortunate event takes place and not after encountering an incident,” Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, said during a virtual briefing.

The company said its “Kaspersky Total Security” (KTS) is bundled with a virtual private network, or VPN, which assures that customers’ online actions are not logged and hackers are prevented from reading e-mails, photos and bank details.

“It has a password manager that generates strong passwords for you and will help you track multiple passwords which are all secured in a private vault, away from the prying eyes of cybercriminals,” the company noted.

It also has safe money, anti-hacking, malicious link detector, and anti-malware features.

Citing the findings of its recent survey on what Filipinos do after falling victim to a digital fraud, Kaspersky said 65% would immediately change the passwords on their bank or digital wallet accounts and apps.

“Half (51%) of surveyed Filipino victims of online scammers and fraudsters admitted that informing their family and friends of what happened was what they did before anything else,” the company noted.

At the same time, 43% said calling their banks to report the incident would be their immediate action.

More than half or 54% of the Filipino respondents said they were confident that electronic banking and e-wallet platforms “are very secure that they use these services at least several times a week.”

Most of them regularly use digital payments for transferring money to family and friends, paying for utilities, and shopping online.

“We can glean from these data that Filipinos draw strength from their family during a crisis particularly where there’s potential loss of money. This may explain why they make calls to their families and friends before anything else rather than swiftly report their circumstance to the proper authorities,” Mr. Yeo said.

BDO done reimbursing 94% of clients involved in Dec. cyberattack

BDO Unibank, Inc. has already reimbursed nearly all account holders affected by a cyberattack late last year, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Benjamin E. Diokno said.

“BDO has already reimbursed 94% of all affected customers and has assured us that remaining clients will be fully reimbursed for their losses,” Mr. Diokno told reporters via Viber message.

Mr. Diokno said the central bank’s oversight examination team reported that both BDO and UnionBank of the Philippines, Inc. are fully cooperating with authorities for the ongoing investigation, which is at an advanced stage.

“The BSP continues to coordinate with law enforcement agencies, relevant government bodies, including the Anti-Money Laundering Council, and key stakeholders in our efforts to strengthen cybersecurity,” he said.

Social media users claiming to be BDO clients said they were notified of fund transfers to a UnionBank account under “Mark Nagoyo”.

Last month, the National Bureau of Investigation arrested five individuals identified to be involved in the incident that affected over 700 BDO account holders.

The Bankers Association of the Philippines earlier this month partnered with the Department of Justice for cybersecurity information sharing and training.

The proposed Financial Consumer Protection Act has been approved by both Houses and is waiting for the signature of President Rodrigo R. Duterte. Once legislated, regulators like the BSP will be given powers to order the reimbursement of lost funds.

“We are working closely with the Philippine Congress for the passage of measures on SIM registration and anti-mule accounts. These measures are seen to deter fraud and other financial crime and improve the handling of consumer complaints,” Mr. Diokno said. — L.W.T. Noble

Century Properties set to complete Century City project

CENTURY Properties Group, Inc. (CPG) said it is about to complete its Century City project, which is the company’s first mixed-use development located in Makati City along Kalayaan Avenue.

In a statement on Wednesday, the company said CPG unit Century City Development Corp. (CCDC) is nearly done with the project. The eighth and last building, called Century Spire, is already being prepared for turnover to clients.

The building has 90,531 square meters (sq.m.) of residential and office spaces for sale.

Century Spire’s architecture was designed by global architectural firm Studio Libeskind. Meanwhile, its common interior areas were designed by international design house Armani/Casa.

Once completed, the eight buildings in Century City will have over 5,000 units and add more than 640,000 sq.m. of gross leasable area (GLA) to the company’s portfolio.

Century Properties has been expanding its commercial leasing along with its “expansion into high-margin businesses” and affordable housing line.

Century City’s PEZA-accredited Century Diamond Tower has just signed its “first key tenant” for the year, which is an international business process outsourcing firm. This is on top of current tenants that inked a leasing agreement before 2022.

“The office market has proven to be resilient despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, but with restrictions gradually being lifted in the city, we see leasing becoming more upbeat this year,” CPG President and Chief Executive Officer Jose Marco R. Antonio said.

East-West Seeds launches VeggiEskwela program

IN A 2020 SURVEY by the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) during the pandemic, it was found that 62% of Filipino households experienced either eating less than they should, lacking nutritious food, skipping a meal, or not being able to eat at all for a whole day. This indicates a big problem in food security and malnutrition in the country, requiring a collective effort from both the community and various stakeholders to address it. East-West Seed Philippines (EWS), one of the biggest vegetable seed companies in Asia, is helping address this problem through its VeggiEskwela initiative. EWS, through the East-West Seed Foundation, aims to create awareness among Filipino families of the importance of eating nutritious food, encourage them to plant their own vegetables, and to make vegetables part of their daily meals by learning to enjoy eating them. Launched in 2012 and formerly known as Oh My Gulay – Tanim sa Kinabukasan, the VeggiEskwela program has already trained 27,508 student beneficiaries, 2,849 teachers, and has established partnerships with 242 barangays and 1,323 schools nationwide. When the pandemic hit in 2020, VeggiEskwela shifted to an online learning initiative to reach more people while ensuring the safety of its participants. This led to the introduction of the VeggiEskwela Home Gardening Webinar series that offers 15 webinar topics on vegetable production, all designed to provide participants with knowledge and skills to successfully build their own vegetable home garden. EWS has also partnered with the Department of Education (DepEd) to expand the training capacity of the program with the introduction of VeggiEskwela: Training of Trainers initiative. This program was developed to train teachers by expanding their skills and empowering them to become trainers not only to their students but in their respective communities as well. This also supports the DepEd’s Gulayan sa Paaralan program which addresses malnutrition among school children by promoting vegetable production and consumption. EWS Foundation also provides free online training modules on vegetable gardening at: https://www.eastwestseedfoundation.ph/veggieskwela. Pascua, Suarez try to set world records in obstacle course

ROCHELLE Suarez (left) and Kevin Pascua (right) — PILIPINAS OBSTACLE SPORTS FEDERATION

THE Pilipinas Obstacle Sports Federation (POSF) isn’t slowing down despite the pandemic.

POSF president Atty. Alberto “Al” Agra on Wednesday said they have lined up several races for the national team the whole year including one where Kevin Pascua and Rochelle Suarez will try to officially set new Guinness World Records (GWR) in an event set on April 9-10 at the Arcovia City in Pasig.

Mr. Pascua is the fastest man in the 100-meter Obstacle course with a time of 29.92 seconds, while Ms. Suarez was tops in the women’s side with a clocking of 49.70 seconds.

If the two, who are both Southeast Asian Games gold medalists, could register faster times in Arcovia, they would be officially enlisted as world-record holders in the GWR record books.

“After 42 firsts in the five years since the POSF was established in January 2017, we at POSF are setting our sights for more firsts in the next five months and the next five years,” Mr. Agra in Wednesday’s presser at the Café Rizal in Manila.

The POSF will also hold the Ninja and Track Oval events at the Obstacle Sports Factory (OSF) from March 4-6 with the winners qualifying to the Ultimate Ninja Athletics Association World Championships slated in July in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A total of 58 gyms from 21 countries are simultaneously holding their own races that serves as qualifying races to the Las Vegas meet.

On May 14-15, the Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus, Cavite will host two events — the OCR 400m and OCR 800m where the champions will advance to the World Championships in Moscow, Russia tentatively set in August, the OSF Asian Championship in Bahrain in November and the OSF AP Southeast Asian Championships in Malaysia in October.

The POSF has also set an Altitude OCR tilt in Mount Pulag in the Cordilleras from March 25-27 with the titlists representing the country in the World Championships in Mt. Everest in Nepal in November and the World Finals in Mount Toubkal in Morroco in August.

But Mr. Agra said the one in Arcovia would be the most significant since there is a chance the country will set a Guinness World Record.

“The event is another milestone. We will have official adjudicators from the GWR and World Obstacle (the world governing body of the sport),” said Mr. Agra, who said the Philippine Sports Commission is backing their races.

The POSF has reached great heights since its inception five years back including a perfect six-gold medal haul in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games in Alabang. — Joey Villar

Roblox tumbles as 2021 results show growth slowing after pandemic

ROBLOX CORP. reported bookings that missed analysts’ estimates in the fourth quarter, reflecting a retreat from the pandemic-inspired boost over the last two years as Chief Executive Officer David Baszucki urged investors to “take the long view” on the game platform company. The shares tumbled 14% in extended trading.

Bookings, which include revenue and deferred revenue and other adjustments, rose 20% from a year earlier to $770.1 million, the company said in a statement on Tuesday. Analysts were estimating $786.2 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Average daily active users increased 33% to 49.5 million, slightly less than the 50.5 million analysts were expecting. Much of that growth comes from countries in Asia, Latin America and Europe. And, in a shift, more than half of Roblox’s user base is now over age 13.

The results mark Roblox’s first full-year report since it went public in March 2021. Mr. Baszucki acknowledged that over the course of two years of the pandemic, “our numbers have been affected in several ways.”

The gaming industry had a banner year in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. Roblox, a social platform that enables players to create their own online games and worlds, captured the undivided attention of as much as two-thirds of US kids ages 9 to12. That success also made the company vulnerable when tweens were called back to classrooms, sports and other activities.

“As parts of the world began to return to a more normal way of life, our absolute numbers have continued to grow,” Mr. Baszucki said, but “growth rates have declined as we are comparing, in some cases, to quarters last year in which certain key metrics doubled or even nearly tripled.”

As the pandemic fades, Roblox is looking to the future in the metaverse, envisioned as an immersive version of the Internet where people will be able to interact, play games or work using a digital avatar. While many companies are touting the benefits and growth potential of the metaverse, Roblox has a head start because its users are already able to make their own video games and virtual worlds using its technology. In 2021, users spent more than 1 million hours inside 1,900 of its “experiences,” the company said.

At the same time, Meta Platforms, Inc. recently experienced a harsh reality check after announcing a full-force push into the metaverse. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Amine Bensaid said the two companies “have completely different business goals. I don’t think any company is better-positioned than Roblox on the vision many have on the metaverse.”

Roblox Chief Business Officer Craig Donato said that the fallout of Meta’s metaverse push has given Roblox “no second thoughts. We’re very, very consistent on where we want to go. I think more and more time will be spent in these digital spaces.” Mr. Donato said the company sees the metaverse as a “long-term trend we need to work on and we’ve been working on it for 15 years.” He added that it’s a matter of “if, not when” the company integrates blockchain technology.

The ability to operate across platforms is key to traditional definitions for the metaverse, and right now, Roblox is accessible only on PC, mobile devices and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One console. In an interview, Mr. Donato said the company is “actively looking at all platforms but we wouldn’t announce anything we’re working on until we’re demoing it live.”

Roblox’s shares surged 130% last year, but are down 29% so far this year. Matthew Ball, managing partner of venture capital firm Epyllion Co., said Roblox’s ebb and flow is in line with other metaverse-themed equities, like game-tech company Unity Software, Inc. Ball expects Roblox to continue to grow.

“It has the most powerful flywheel in gaming today, and there are billions yet to join socially focused virtual worlds,” he said. “There are likely to be hitches along the way, and Roblox may end up replaced by a newer competitor, but right now Roblox looks like the virtual world platform of the West.”

One of those hitches bas been content moderation. Over 2021, several investigations by news outlets described an epidemic of inappropriate content on the platform, including sex clubs and fascist or white supremacist role-play. In November, when Roblox introduced a new spatial voice feature, The Washington Post reported that users made lewd noises and said slurs. To participate, users were asked to prove they were over 13 with a photo and government ID.

Roblox employs human moderators, about 80% of whom are outsourced, and sophisticated artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to review content. Mr. Baszucki implied that some headlines around inappropriate content in Roblox were exaggerated, telling Bloomberg that “we’re constantly improving AI and filtering and we’re optimistic about the direction we’re going in.” He added that Roblox has a “zero tolerance policy” on content that violates the platform’s guidelines. — Bloomberg
