MONSTER.COM said online hiring activity rose 23% year-on-year in November led by the retail industry.
In a statement Thursday, Monster.com said the Philippines’ performance in November was consistent with that of recent months.
“The country saw an impressive 23% year-on-year jump in online recruitment between November 2017 and 2018, according to findings of the Monster Employment Index (MEI),” Monster.Com said.
Monster.com CEO for the Asia-Pacific and Middle East Abhijeet Mukherjee said the study’s findings were also in line with the labor department’s positive outlook on employment this year.
“The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) recently revealed an upswing in the Philippine employment landscape with 800,000 new jobs created this year,” he said, adding that DoLE’s view is consistent with the uptrend in online hiring recorded by the Monster Employment Index.
During DoLE’s yearend news conference on Dec. 17, Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said that 800,000 new jobs were generated in 2018, below the department’s target of over 900,000.
MEI, which tracks 12 industries, found that retail hiring activity grew the most in November at 38%. It was followed by health care (33%); logistics, courier/freight/transportation, import/export and shipping (32%); hospitality (26%); banking, financial services and insurance (25%); and advertising (21%).
The other sectors tracked were IT, telecoms/ISP (18%); consumer goods/ FMCG, food & packaged food, home appliance, garments/textiles/leather, gems & jewellery (12%); and engineering, construction and real estate (10%).
Education was the only sector to post a decline in November at minus 5%. — Gillian M. Cortez
