THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Monday that the damage to agriculture caused by ash emitted by Mayon Volcano has been estimated at P6.64 million so far.

Citing initial estimates from its Bicol field office, the DA said the losses cover 16 hectares of agricultural land, particularly in Albay province, affecting 62 farmers and destroying production estimated at 84 metric tons.

High-value crops accounted for the bulk of the damage at P6.51 million, while livestock losses were valued at P121,000.

The DA noted that the figures remain subject to validation as field assessments continue, with total losses expected to rise as more affected areas are evaluated.

On Saturday, thick ash and smoke emerged from Mayon Volcano, blanketing parts of Albay.

The DA said it is working with local government units to evacuate and pool livestock, and inspecting animal health in affected areas.

It added that feed, veterinary drugs, masks, and transportation have been prepositioned to support farmers.

The DA said it is also monitoring agricultural prices and supply movements in anticipation of potential disruptions.

Assistance available to affected farmers includes seed, livestock support, and access to loans of up to P25,000 from the Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan Program, payable over three years at zero interest.

Farmers insured with the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. may also claim indemnification, the DA said. — Vonn Andrei E. Villamiel
