UP Vargas Museum presents J Pacena II’s solo exhibit titled The Banquet: Subject Matter I of III at the 1F Galleries of the Museum. The exhibit focuses on three themes: The Current Art System and the Philippine Art Market, The Catalogue of Artists from year 2000-2015, and the Study of Space, Materials and Technique. Together, these reflect Pacena’s fascination with the work and practice of artists of different persuasions and how they come together to sketch out the landscape Philippine Contemporary Art. Vinyl On Vinyl is holding three concurrent exhibitions. These are Hahan at Wrkz, featuring works by Uji “Hahan” Handoko Eko Saputro, a multi-media artist from Yogyakarta, Indonesia who has collaborated with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Smeg and Hurley; Small-medium, Large by Nix Puno; and Hidden Cravings by Kaloy Reyes Pangilinan. 1335MABINI presents an exhibition organized by Kiri Dalena titled There is Another Sky, featuring works by Kiri and Aba Dalena, Aubrey Llamas, Jose Olarte, Jippy Pascua, Jeffrie Po, John Torres, Mordz Visitacion, and Lina Zacher. Primarily featuring selected works in video and photography, the roster of visual artists, filmmakers, and photographers focus their lens on the current plight of the lumad — the indigenous people of Mindanao. Also on view is Rinne Abrugena’s solo exhibition titled Death in the Open. Through her latest collection of paintings and drawings, the artist continues to probe the intricacies of visual language and subtleties of human behavior. The exhibits run until June 24. Silverlens Galleries is currently showing three exhibitions: Eric Zamuco’s Visible Currents, an experiential exhibit of reconstructed forms; Chati Coronel’s latest solo exhibit, The Way In/The Way Out, using seven colors, one for each painting, as an energy center; and, Johan Espiritu’s Cy Prés. As the Philippines celebrates its 118th Independence Day, the Makati Shangri-La, Manila holds Encuentros featuring works by National Artist Federico Alcuaz from June 16 to 26 at the Lobby.

The BenCab Museum presents Crusaders by Orley Ypon featuring his hyper-realistic painting style that highlights his mastery of the human anatomy; and a textile exhibition, Upland/Lowland Tingguian/Iloko, featuring spectacular weaves and textiles of the Tingguian of Abra and its uplands. Luis “Junyee” Yee, Jr. ruminates on silence in The Silence of J, his solo exhibition at Galleria Duemila, 210 Loring St., Pasay City, until June 30. In the exhibit, the walls are seamlessly hung with sparse four-sided woodwork, evocative reliefs made from sturdy jointed tongue-and-groove planks, whitewashed in ivory, snow, and eggshell.

Kulay-Diwa presents No Reason to Be Bored, an exhibition of recent works by Franz Marion “Nano” Vocalan. Vocalan, who hails from Angono, is well known for his graffiti paintings. The exhibit runs until July 7. The gallery is located at 25 Lopez Ave., Lopez Village, Sucat, Parañaque City.

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila will showcase Raymundo “Ray” Albano’s short-lived yet very prolific and influential career in A Time to Unlearn, at the Sphere section of MET’s Philippine Contemporary Art: To Scale the Past and the Possible. This exhibition shows the many contributions of Albano to the local art scene of today. The Metropolitan Museum is located at the Bangko Sentral Compound, Roxas Blvd., Malate, Manila.

The first Retrospective Exhibition of Antonio Austria is on view until July 10 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (3F Hallway Gallery). The exhibit features Austria’s paintings of “different aspects, moods, scenarios, social and religious values of the urban Filipino” as well as drawings and memorabilia telling of Austria’s progress as an artist in the 1950s. The touring exhibition Badong: Salvador Bernal Designs the Stage, organized by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, is on view at the Ateneo Art Gallery until July 2. Curated by Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, Gino Gonzalez, and Ricardo Cruz, the exhibit honors the late National Artist for Theater Design Salvador “Badong” F. “Spanish Thrillers,” a series of Spanish movies, is being held every Saturday in June at the FDCP Cinematheque. Enrique Urbizu’s No habrá paz para los malvados (No Rest for the Wicked) willbe shown on June 18. The 2011 film is about a cop who is implicated in a triple homicide in an after-hours club. Jaume Balagueró’s Mientras duermes (Sleep Tight) will close the film series on June 25. A doorman in an apartment building in Barcelona embarks on a mission to torment one tenant. DITO: Bahay ng Sining holds its monthly weekend art festival, Starving for Art, on June 17 to 19 at J. Molina St., Marikina City. The MNL Urban Design Festival goes to Escolta, at the iconic First United Building, with “People Make Cities! The Escolta Festival” on June 18. The 14th Marian exhibit of the Church-run Radio Veritas is on view at SM North, EDSA, Quezon City until June 20. The station will hold the Mary and the Saints in the Year of the Eucharist and the Family exhibit featuring canonically crowned and popular venerated images of Mary from various parts of the country, as well as images of the Saints with devotion to and writings about the Eucharist and the family such as St. Therese and St. Padre Pio.
