AS A WAY to say thanks and spread the holiday cheer — and to show off its high-brightness projectors — Epson Philippines is celebrating its first Christmas as “the brand of choice in projectors” and “the dominant projector brand in the Philippines” (according to a company press release) by doing a 3D-projection mapping show at the Capitol Commons Park in Pasig City.
“The planning and execution took half a year (starting July),” Donna V. Ferro, head of marketing communications, Epson Philippines, told BusinessWorld during the launch on Dec. 11.
Until Jan. 3, 2016, the Maersk Global Service Centers Ltd. (Philippines) building across Capitol Commons Park will light up every thirty minutes from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. for a 10-minute show that shows how Filipino families spend Christmas — which, going by the show, is mostly shopping.
But then, the show was also a clever advertorial for Ortigas and Co. properties such as Greenhills Shopping Center and Araneta center, since Epson has partnered with Ortigas and Co. for this project.
3D-mapping is the technology of projecting images onto an uneven surface (like that of buildings) while taking into account the architecture of the said surface.
The first 3D-mapping event of a national shrine was done on June 11 at the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, in time for the 117th Philippine Independence. The show was about Philippine history, from the pre-colonial era to the present.
Ms. Ferro said that it was hard to locate the best place for the project as it would require a location that is easily accessible, would have an open space in front, and with a building that was neither too big nor too small. They then arrived at Capitol Commons with its conveniently placed park.
The visuals for Epson’s “Spectacular Christmas Show” are by the artist community The Collective, which made clever use of the building’s box windows as they animated them look as if they were moving.
The video is done using a set of eight high-brightness projectors, which Ms. Ferro said bring a color and white brightness level of 11,000 lumens.
She added that Epson is looking to make this event an annual one. — Zsarlene B. Chua
