THE DEPARTMENT of Transportation (DoTr) on Sunday said it would lift anti-coronavirus protocols in all public transport across the Philippines.

“This new development is a significant step towards normalizing public transportation and supporting economic recovery,” Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista said in a statement.

“While public safety remains a top priority, the removal of protocols aims to facilitate commuters’ convenience, contribute to the revival of the transportation industry and help stimulate economic activity,” he added.

The agency said the decision is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.’s proclamation that lifted the state of public health emergency due to COVID-19.

Under the order, which is effective immediately, the face mask mandate and physical distancing protocols in public transportation will be lifted.

The Department of Health reported 290 coronavirus infections on July 22, bringing the total to 4.17 million. Only a little over 5,000 cases were active. More than 66,000 have died. — Justine Irish D. Tabile
