WOMAN Grandmaster (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna downed Adrian Domerfield of England and Woman FIDE Master Paula Alexandra Gitu of Moldova to re-enter the top 10 after four rounds of the Burgse Meesters in Burges, Belgium Monday night.
Frayna, 22, now has three points to jump into a 21-player group at No. 10 while easing the stigma of a heartbreaking loss to sixth seed GM Wan Yunguo of China in the second round in a game where she blew her winning chances.
She was playing Dutch International Master (IM) Lucas Van Foreest in the fifth round at press time hoping for another win to climb further in the standings.
Interestingly, Frayna, who is backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and The Philippine STAR president and chief executive officer Miguel Belmonte, lost to Van Foreest’s younger brother, GM Jorden, in the seventh round of the 22nd Hogeschool Zeeland tournament in Vlissingen, the Netherlands a few days back and should be motivated to vent her ire on the latter.
GM Jayson Gonzales, Frayna’s coach, bounced back from a third-round loss to third seed Matthew Turner of Scotland by trouncing FIDE-affiliated Woman International Master Tsveta Galunova to join the Frayna-led pack.
The 49-year-old Gonzales was tackling FM Georgi Tomov of Bulgaria.
IM John Marvin Miciano continued to falter and drew with Thomas Villiers of England and had just two points to show.
