A DATE with a long-coveted destiny after six decades awaits undefeated National University (NU) when it goes for the jugular against La Salle in Game 2 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 84 women’s volleyball tournament best-of-three finals series at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs last won a UAAP women’s volleyball title in 1957, making their tussle versus the Lady Spikers at 6:30 p.m. a huge chance to end the agonizing drought for good in a grand, sweeping fashion.

Should the stars align, NU would achieve it through a dream 16-0 season — the same feat completed by the Ateneo team led by Alyssa Valdez back in Season 77.

But that bid, as huge as the stakes and the rewards are, is anticipated to be a tough nut to crack.

“May mga silly mistakes kami noong Game 1 na kailangan pa namin i-workout. We have to sustain our energy and focus. Our mindset is always staying ready,” said coach Karl Dimaculangan after a resounding Game 1 win.

NU, which enjoyed a week-long rest as an automatic finalist, hardly broke a sweat in the series opener by scoring a 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 win over a La Salle side that still needed to come out from the stepladder semifinals.

That was the Lady Bulldogs’ ninth straight win in as many sets in three games against the Lady Spikers as the glaring indication of their season-long dominance.

Still, NU braces for a fiery La Salle fightback built on its established winning tradition following its 11th finals appearance in the last 12 seasons.

NU’s prized spiker Mhicaela Belen, who is a strong contender for both the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in the ceremony at 5:30 p.m. before the game, shares the same sentiment.

Down but not out, La Salle for its part vows a strong resistance to extend the series with an expected bounce back game from gunners Alleiah Malaluan, Leila Cruz, Jolina Dela Cruz, Fifi Sharma, and Thea Gagate after struggling in the opener. — John Bryan Ulanday

Pixar’s Lightyear underwhelms with $51 million debut as Jurassic World stays No. 1

LOS ANGELES — To infinity and beyond? Not exactly…

Lightyear, a spinoff story set in Pixar’s Toy Story universe, fell short of that boundless milestone in its box office debut, collecting a lackluster $51 million from 4,255 North American theaters. Family audiences, the movie’s prime demographic, have been largely absent since COVID. But even so, those ticket sales are disappointing for a brand as recognizable as Pixar, the home of The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and Up. It’s particularly problematic given that Lightyear cost $200 million to produce and tens of millions more to market.

Heading into the weekend, the Disney film was expected to generate at least $70 million. But its ambitions were thwarted by heightened competition from Universal’s behemoth Jurassic World Dominion and Paramount’s high-flying Top Gun: Maverick, as well as little intrigue to watch a slightly esoteric origin story about Buzz Lightyear, one that had only a tenuous connection to the four films in the popular kid-friendly franchise. With its wobbly liftoff, Lightyear landed in second place, becoming one of the rare Pixar films to not take the top spot at the domestic box office.

Notably, Lightyear is the first Pixar movie to play on the big screen in more than two years — since Onward in March 2020. During the pandemic, three Pixar movies — Soul, Luca, and Turning Red — skipped theaters to land directly on Disney+, leaving some box office analysts to question if consumers have been trained to watch Pixar movies at home. Other industry experts question if Disney is relying too heavily on brand recognition and not enough on execution. Lightyear landed an “A-” CinemaScore, indicating that audiences enjoyed the movie.

“This is a soft opening for a spin-off of one of the most successful animation series of all time,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. He notes: “Toy Story defied gravity at the box office during its 24-year run, each episode topping the last, the last two clearing a billion dollars worldwide. But like all spin-offs, the Lightyear story is narrower now.”

Even with a colossal 60% decline, Jurassic World Dominion managed to capture the box office crown again. Universal’s prehistoric sequel generated $58.6 million from 4,697 cinemas in its second weekend of release, bringing its domestic total to $259 million.

In third place, Top Gun: Maverick continues to fly high with a mammoth $44 million from 4,035 venues in North America. Those box office returns, a scant 15% drop from its prior outing, are especially significant because the film has been playing in theaters for a month. Only one film, Avatar with $50 million in its fourth weekend of release, has generated more at this point in its theatrical run. To date, the sequel to 1986’s Top Gun has grossed $466 million in the US and Canada and $885 million globally, making the film the biggest blockbuster in Tom Cruise’s decades-long career.

Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness took the No. 4 slot with $4.2 million from 2,455 locations. After seven weekends on the big screen, the Marvel comic book sequel has amassed an impressive $405.1 million in North America. However, the Strange sequel is no longer the highest-grossing movie of the year in the US. That title now belongs to Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. — Reuters

NSSLAs post higher end-2021 assets as loans continue to expand

NONSTOCK savings and loan associations (NSSLAs) continued to grow in terms of assets, driven by a rise in loans and capital contributions, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said.

NSSLAs’ assets grew by a total of 9.1% to P283.8 billion as of end-2021 from the pre-pandemic level of P260.2 billion as of end-2019. Assets were comprised mainly of loans, which rose by 8.9% to P246.3 billion from P226.1 billion during the same period.

Year on year, their assets grew by 6.3% in 2021 and by 2.6% in 2020, while loans grew by 4% in 2021 and by 4.9% in 2020, respectively.

The central bank said the growth in their NSSLAs’ assets was driven primarily by deposits that rose 36.7% to reach P80.6 billion at end-2021 from end-2019, and capital contributions that expanded by 2.8% to reach P134.6 billion.

Year on year, deposits grew by 14.1% in 2021 and 19.8% in 2020. Meanwhile, capital contributions grew by 2.9% in 2021 after a slight contraction of 0.2% in 2020.

The BSP also noted that NSSLAs sustained their profitability, citing their 7.6% average dividend rate in 2021. The industry’s liquidity and capital position also remained strong and enough to cover their funding requirements and risk-taking activities.

“These figures underscore the trust and confidence of NSSLAs’ members in the industry, as well as the support of these institutions to cultivating the habit of saving,” BSP Governor Benjamin E. Diokno said on Monday.

NSSLAs are nonstock and non-profit corporations that provide financial products and services. NSSLAs are in the business of collecting savings from their members and financing their personal loans, while profits are generated primarily from lending and investing activities.

There are currently 60 non-stock savings and loan associations. Of this amount, 11 serve the military and uniformed personnel, 23 provide financial intermediation to other government employees, while the remaining 26 serve the private sector.

NSSLAs have a nationwide network of 72 branches and 158 satellite offices, providing affordable and accessible products to underbanked and underserved members.

“NSSLAs continue to play a vital role in fostering inclusive finance and in empowering the marginalized sector,” Mr. Diokno said. “Rest assured that the BSP shall pursue further regulatory enhancements as well as strategic partnerships with relevant government agencies and key industry players to support the industry. — Tobias Jared Tomas

Robinsons Land sets sustainability goals

ROBINSONS Land Corp. (RLC) has defined specific environmental impact targets across its business units as part of its commitment to sustainability.

In a statement, RLC said the pandemic highlighted the need for companies to adopt a more focused approach to sustainability.

“We continue to invest in creating low-carbon and resilient spaces to further reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, protect the environment, and promote efficient land use,” RLC President and CEO Frederick D. Go was quoted as saying in the company’s sustainability report.

RLC said it has been promoting responsible land use by integrating green and open spaces in all its properties. For new projects, it will engage green-certified contractors and consultants, as well as establish guidelines on landscaping, to achieve carbon neutrality and improve resiliency.

The Gokongwei-led developer has also crafted a roadmap towards a net zero carbon ambition by 2050. This is in line with the Paris Agreement, which calls on countries to take climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming to within 1.5 degrees Celsius.

RLC said it is also planning to use clean power in its current and future shopping mall projects, as part of its goal to shift power requirements to renewable energy (RE) sources by 2035.

“Cognizant of the Philippines’ target of 35% share of RE in the power generation mix by 2030 and 50% share by 2040, RLC will pursue more investment opportunities through the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) or the RE Market — once it is established — and engage with clean energy providers for both Luzon and provincial areas,” the company said.

Robinsons malls and offices used 30.24 gigawatt hours of renewable energy in 2021.

RLC currently has 24 malls with solar rooftop installations, generating nearly 30 megawatts of clean and renewable energy.

“By 2030, RLC intends to divert all discarded non-biodegradable materials in our properties away from landfills and towards recycling and other waste processing facilities,” Mr. Go said.

For its hotel and leisure properties, RLC is aiming to reduce annual food spoilage by 5%.

RLC Residences will also conduct solid waste management briefings on the proper use of facilities for housekeeping personnel. It will also launch an education campaign on reusable materials for employees, homeowners, and residents.

“Through these programs, we will be able to better manage the volume of waste generated in our residential developments even after the units have been turned over to the homeowners. We look forward to expanding these initiatives to all RLC properties,” Mr. Go said.

The developer also wants design plans of new and existing RLC developments to have wastewater treatment and materials recovery facilities by 2025.

Globe board OK’s stock rights offer for network expansion

GLOBE Telecom, Inc. announced on Monday that its board of directors recently approved a stock rights offer for its eligible common shareholders.

“The company expects to raise up to P32 billion, which will be used for the expansion of [its] mobile and broadband network as well as debt repayment,” Globe said in an e-mailed statement.

“The proposed stock rights offer will also enable the company to further expand its digital ecosystem and further differentiate itself in the market, as it capitalizes on opportunities in and beyond telco,” it added.

According to the company, determination of the final terms and conditions of the rights offer, including but not limited to the final issue size, entitlement ratio, offer price, record date, and all other terms, will be determined prior to the rights offer.

Globe has mandated BPI Capital Corp. as sole global coordinator, domestic lead underwriter and joint bookrunner and UBS AG Singapore Branch as sole international underwriter and joint bookrunner, with PNB Capital and Investment Corp. as domestic co-lead underwriter for the rights offer.

The company also said that Singapore Telecom International Pte. Ltd. and Ayala Corp., its principal shareholders, have both indicated their support for the rights offer.

“The company expects to launch the rights offer after receiving the required approvals, under suitable equity market conditions.”

At the same time, the telco said that the rights offer would put it in a position to quickly realize opportunities in the telecommunications sector and complementary services.

“Globe has made investments in several digital industries in an endeavor to address challenges faced by Filipinos as they navigate their digitalization journey. Supported by the demand for internet connection through mobile and broadband, Globe’s presence in the sectors of financial technology, virtual healthcare, digital marketing solutions, venture capital funding for startups and entertainment is expected to significantly impact the digital lives of Filipinos over the long term,” Globe noted.

The company saw its net income for the first quarter increase by 86% to P13.7 billion year on year, mainly due to an improved topline and the partial sale of its data center business.

Mr. Abueva had an abbreviated stint in the Hotshots’ 89-84 win over the Gin Kings as he was slapped with his second technical foul of the night for taunting and bumping Nards Pinto at the 9:15 mark of the fourth.

It resulted in his banishment and “The Beast’’ left the MOA Arena without even waiting for the final buzzer, uttering “Japan, Japan” and “Bye, PBA” as he did so.

Ian Sangalang, a long-time buddy of Mr. Abueva’s, and coach Chito Victolero expressed confidence the Season 46 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Best Player of the Conference awardee will regain his bearing quickly.

“Maybe frustrated lang si Calvin sa nangyari, but we’ll move on and move forward from this,” said Mr. Victolero, whose charges improved to 2-3 after topping the Gin Kings for the fourth straight “Manila Clasico” duel.

Magnolia needs all available hands on deck in its effort to climb out of 11th spot, especially with Paul Lee still working his way to recovery from back spasms.

ABS-CBN formally unveiled its Darna mural at its Quezon City headquarters. Jane De Leon, lead star of the upcoming series, Mars Ravelo’s Darna, led the unveiling ceremonies at the ABS-CBN Compound along Eugenio Lopez Drive in Quezon City. “We offer this to our real-life heroes who prove in their own little ways that there is a hero in all of us, that we can always find Darna in everyone,” she said. Darna stars Janella Salvador and Joshua Garcia also joined the special tribute. Multidisciplinary visual artist Anina Rubio designed the huge mural featuring people from all walks of life wearing the Darna insignia. Helmed by director Chito S. BSP reviewing currency denominations

THE BANGKO SENTRAL ng Pilipinas (BSP) is reviewing currency denominations that have seen low usage and demand as more individuals shift to online transactions, its chief said on Monday.

“As the sole issuer of currency in the country, the BSP ensures the timely and ample supply of good quality bank notes and coins in the most cost-effective and efficient way,” BSP Governor Benjamin E. Diokno said at a briefing on Monday.

He said the emergence of contactless payment technology has revolutionized retail payments and with it, the use of cash.

“The changing mix of currency denomination should be compatible with real demand in response to changes to circumstances such as e-payment usage, price development, consumer preferences,” he said. “The use of banknotes and coins is expected to taper off over time, particularly the low denomination currencies.”

Mr. Diokno cited the central bank’s issuance of P20 coins in 2019 to reduce the cost of replacing unfit 20-piso banknotes. The coin and banknote versions of the denomination remain in circulation, but the P20 bill will be demonetized once the central bank runs out of materials for its printing.

At the moment, the BSP issues six banknote and seven coin denominations.

The seven coin denominations are 1-sentimo, 5-sentimo, 25-sentimo, 1-piso, 5-piso, 10-piso and 20-piso.

The six bill denominations are 20-piso, 50-piso, 100-piso, 200-piso, 500-piso and 1,000-piso.

Meanwhile, the BSP is now doing a pilot circulation of polymer P1,000 banknotes, with wider use targeted by 2023. Polymer bills are deemed to be more durable as they can last 2.5 to four times compared with paper money, and are also water and dirt-resistant.

The central bank is continuing to develop its currency forecasting methods and capabilities as it aims to promote price stability and maintain the integrity of the Philippine currency, Mr. Diokno said.

These efforts include monitoring technological advancements in the global payment systems, he said.

Aside from periodic reviews of its forecasting models, the BSP also conducts specialized learning and development programs on currency forecasting and mandatory econometrics training for its team. — Keisha B. Ta-asan

Original Top Gun house is now a ‘High Pie’ shop

IN Oceanside, California, a tiny pastel blue bungalow is nestled between lofty hotels and apartment blocks. It is the Top Gun house.

The house was owned by Maverick’s love interest, Charlie, in the 1986 original film. Now restored and moved a block down from its original location, it has been opened to the public.

“You get to relive that magical, quintessential southern California moment, where Tom Cruise is coming up the coast in his Kawasaki 900… There’s a replica right outside the house that you can jump on and really relive that moment of the coastal breezes going through your hair, which is a lot of fun,” said Ben Fairchild of the Mission Pacific Hotel and Seabird Resort, where the structure is now located.

Visitors can also buy pie as the house has been turned into a “High Pie” shop. — Reuters

House of Investments buys A.T. Yuchengco Centre

HOUSE of Investments, Inc. (HI), the investment holding and management company of the Yuchengco group, has approved the purchase of A.T. Yuchengco Centre from its affiliate bank Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC) for P6.07 billion.

The purchase is part of the firm’s long-term plans to consolidate the property interests of the conglomerate.

“This is part of our strategy to realign the businesses of YGC, and strengthen the conglomerate’s position with a more holistic approach in the property development and management sector,” HI President and Chief Executive Officer Lorenzo V. Tan said in a disclosure on Monday.

Mr. Tan said that for the purchase, an investment vehicle will be incorporated to hold the asset as HI’s wholly owned subsidiary.

“This is part of HI’s plans to grow its property business segment in line with the conglomerate’s mission to build and grow a portfolio of strategically diversified and sustainable investments,” he added.

A.T. Yuchengco Centre is a 34-storey tower in Taguig. As one of a limited number of structures accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), it gives special access to tax incentives and government assistance, and is designed especially for BPO offices.

HI is an investment holding and management company and one of the four major flagship corporations of the Yuchengco group. Its core businesses involve car dealership, construction, education and property services. Its portfolio investments are in pharmaceuticals, energy, and afterlife services.

SWP President Puentevella to be inducted into Hall of Fame

SAMAHANG Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) President Monico Puentevella will be inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Hall of Fame for his memorable contribution to the sport.

No less than IWF interim president Michael Irani and secretary-general Mohammed Jaloud relayed the good news in a letter to Mr. Puentevella on Wednesday.

“It is our pleasure to inform you that you have been elected to be part of the IWF Hall of Fame for your lifetime achievement in the sport of weightlifting,” said Messrs. Irani and Jaloud.

The Hall of Fame inauguration is set on Saturday in Tirana, Albania.

Apart from pushing for more stringent measures against doping and corruption in the IWF, Mr. Puentevella has also been credited the country’s meteoric upheaval in the international scene.

Under his watch, the Bacolod City sportsman and politician produced the country its first Olympic gold medalist in Hidilyn F. Diaz in last year’s Tokyo Games and several potential world-beaters headed Asian champion Vanessa Sarno and World Juniors titlist Rose Jean Ramos.

And the honor was just a fitting reward for the man who quietly but effectively worked behind the scenes to help put the Filipinos in the global sports map. — Joey Villar

Kate Bush tops UK charts with 1985 hit thanks to Stranger Things

LONDON — British singer and songwriter Kate Bush topped the UK singles chart with her 1985 hit “Running Up That Hill” on Friday, setting several records with the song that has enjoyed a resurgence thanks to Netflix show Stranger Things.

“Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” peaked at No. 3 upon its original release but has found a new fan base among a younger generation in the latest season of the 1980s-set show about supernatural horrors in the fictional Indiana town of Hawkins.

The song, from Ms. Bush’s album Hounds of Love, has performed well in music charts in several countries, including the United States, since the first volume of Stranger Things season four episodes premiered on Netflix in late May.

Ms. Bush, who rose to fame in 1978 with debut single “Wuthering Heights” in which the then 19-year-old won fans with her unique voice and expressive dance moves, made a rare public comment about the song’s renewed popularity and that she was a fan of the sci-fi drama created by brothers Matt and Ross Duffer.

“It’s very touching that the song has been so warmly received, especially as it’s being driven by the young fans who love the shows,” Ms. Bush, 63, said in a statement earlier this month.

“I’m really happy that the Duffer Brothers are getting such positive feedback for their latest creation. They deserve it.”

The Official Charts Company said Ms. Bush had achieved three all-time Official Chart records on Friday: longest time for a single to reach No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart — 37 years — as well as oldest female artist to score a No. 1 on the Official Singles Chart.

And 44 years since she last had a No. 1 single in the UK with “Wuthering Heights,” Ms. Bush now also holds the record for the longest-ever gap between No. 1 singles in Official Chart history, it added.

“The way that a new generation of music fans have taken her classic track to their hearts really does cement Kate’s position as an all-time great, if that were at all necessary,” Official Charts Company Chief Executive Martin Talbot said in a statement. — Reuters
