Chery Tiggo, F2  lead six-club tourney

LIPA CITY — Six clubs bannered by powerhouse Chery Tiggo Crossovers and F2 Logistics are raring to go when the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) Champions League rolls out its first-ever Champions League starting tomorrow at the Aquamarine Recreational Center gym here.

The Crossovers and the Cargo Movers loom as the heavy favorites in the inaugural tilt organized by the national federation slated Nov. 20-25 before the seven-team men’s tournament on Nov. 29-Dec. 4.

Chery Tiggo is coming off a stellar championship run in the maiden pro season of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) last August while the hungry F2, led by a bevy of national team players, troops back into action after a long hiatus.

They will be up against Tuguegarao Perlas Spikers, Petro Gazz Angels, California Precision Sports and Baguio Lady Highlanders in a five-day tiff that will crown the No. 1 seed as the champion after a single-round robin play.

PNVF said it’s all systems go for the country’s inaugural Champions League with the arrival of the federation delegation on Wednesday and the entry of participating teams in batches yesterday at the La Virginia Hotel and Resort.

Strict protocols are being followed inside the bubble with a mandatory swab testing and quarantine upon arrival of all participants on top of the RT-PCR test in Metro Manila prior to departure.

“This is the first time that the country is staging its Champions League, which is a staple among members of the FIVB,” said PNVF President Ramon “Tats” Suzara, who also hailed the support of the Lipa City local government unit.

Action begins tomorrow featuring a triple-header headlined by Chery Tiggo, which will test the mettle of Perlas at 4 p.m. — John Bryan Ulanday

PHL tells China to ‘back off’ after boat attack

THE PHILIPPINES on Thursday told China to “back off” after three Chinese Coast Guard vessels illegally blocked and discharged water cannons on boats that were carrying supply to a military post on a Philippine-occupied atoll in the South China Sea.

Acting Presidential Spokesman Karlo Alexei B. Nograles, in a statement on Thursday, said the Philippines condemns and will not back down from Chinese provocation.

“As we have done in the past, we will continue to assert our sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over our territory,” he said.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr., in a separate statement earlier on Thursday, asserted that the “acts of the Chinese Coast Guard vessels are illegal.”

“China has no law enforcement rights in and around these areas. They must take heed and back off,” Mr. Locsin said

“Fortunately, no one was hurt; but our boats had to abort their resupply mission,” he said.

The top envoy pointed out that Ayungin Shoal, where the resupply boats were headed on Tuesday, is part of the Kalayaan Island Group, which is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

There will be no changes in the Philippines’ provision of supplies to troops in Ayungin Shoal, he added. “We do not ask permission to do what we need to do in our territory.”

Mr. Locsin said he conveyed the country’s “outrage, condemnation, and protest of the incident” to Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila has yet to issue a statement on the incident.

“This failure to exercise self-restraint threatens the special relationship between the Philippines and China that President Rodrigo R. Duterte and President Xi Jin Ping have worked hard to nurture,” Mr. Locsin said.

He said he also “reminded China that a public vessel is covered by the Philippines-United States Mutual Defense Treaty.”

Earlier this week, the United States reiterated its vow to assist the Philippines in case of an attack on its vessels in the South China Sea.

“You have our word and our commitment,” US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink said during a bilateral strategic dialogue.

He affirmed the United Nations-backed arbitral award that invalidated China’s claim to more than 80% of the waterway, and the application of the Mutual Defense Treaty in case of an armed attack on Philippine Armed Forces, public vessels, or aircraft in the waterway.

Under the treaty, both sides must help each other in case of any external aggression.

Several Philippine senators also issued statements condemning China’s action.

Senator and presidential aspirant Panfilo M. Lacson told the media on Thursday that diplomatic protests are not enough to stop China from bullying the Philippines.

“We are not satisfied with just filing diplomatic protests (against China). We should have an alliance with stronger countries — militarily strong countries — through our existing bilateral agreements,” said Mr. Lacson, who chairs the Senate committee on National Defense.

He said the country cannot win against China’s military capability, so the strategic response would be to work with other nations in the name of “balance of power” to stop being “push-overs.”

Barcenilla, Laguna rout Davao to book semis spot in PCAP chessfest

FREEPIK

Grandmaster Banjo Barcenilla swept all four of his blitz and rapid games to power Laguna to 16-5 and 14.5-6.5 destruction of Davao on Wednesday and straight to the Northern Conference semifinals of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) third conference.

The many-time national champion and Olympiad veteran waylaid Ariel Aton and Aglipay Oberio twice each to help propel the Laguna Heroes to tomorrow’s semis clash with the San Juan Predators, who devoured the Isabela Knights, 15.5-5.5, and 18-3.

Also scoring significantly for Laguna were GM John Paul Gomez, who ended up with five points out of the possible six, and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, who likewise swept all his four games on the lowest board.

“Happy for the fine start in the knockout stage and beating Davao is a big motivation for us,” said Laguna’s playing co-team owner Fred Paez, who is hoping to reclaim the title it won in the first season last year.

Also making the semis in the North were the Pasig City King Pirates, who clobbered the Rizal Batch Towers, 16-5, 17-5-3.5, and the Caloocan Loadmanna Knights, who edged via Armageddon win the Manila Indo Bravos, 10-5-10-5 (0-3), 13-8.

In the South, it will be defending champion Iloilo versus Lapu Lapu and Camarines versus Penang, Malaysia.

Iloilo survived the Toledo Trojans, 12-9, 10.5-10.5 (3-0); Lapu Lapu eliminated SinQGApore, 12-9, 7.5-13.5, 2-1 (armaggedon); Penang trounced Negros, 10-11, 12-9, 3-0; and Camarines pulled the rug from the Philippine Para Team, 11-10, 12-9. — Joey Villar

Jae CROWDER broke a tie with two free throws with 2:34 remaining and DeAndre Ayton slammed home a Chris Paul assist 67 seconds later, helping the host Phoenix Suns outfinish the Luka Dončić-less Dallas Mavericks for a 105-98 victory on Wednesday night.

Dončić was scratched from the lineup during the day when the Mavericks made a decision to give his sore left knee and ankle some time to heal. He is unlikely to play in the rematch with the Suns on Friday.

The tightly contested matchup had 19 lead changes, including six after a Devin Booker layup put Phoenix in front 87-86 with 5:32 remaining.

Jalen Brunson’s layup with 2:42 to go produced the game’s seventh and final tie, after which Crowder ignited the Suns’ fast finish after getting fouled by Kristaps Porziņģis on a shot attempt.

Booker’s 3-pointer with 50.2 remaining iced the Suns’ 10th straight win.

Booker led six Suns in double figures with 24 points on a night when Phoenix overcame 50% 3-point shooting by the Mavericks and a 48-39 deficit in points off threes.

Ayton finished with a game-high-tying 13 rebounds to go with 19 points, while Paul contributed a game-high 14 assists with just seven points.

Crowder (14 points), Landry Shamet (11), Mikal Bridges (10) and JaVale McGee (10) also scored in double figures for the Suns, who trailed by as many as eight points in the third quarter.

Tim Hardaway, Jr. had a team-high 22 points and Porziņģis 21 for the Mavericks, who lost for just the second time in their last seven games.

Hardaway had three of Dallas’ 16 3-pointers, as did Frank Ntilikina, who finished with 13 points off the bench, and Dorian Finney-Smith, who did all his scoring from beyond the arc.

Dwight Powell matched Ayton’s rebound total with 13 to pace the Mavericks, while Brunson added 18 points and Trey Burke got 10.

Brunson just missed double- and triple-doubles with nine rebounds and a team-high nine assists. — Reuters

Presidential candidates plan to continue infra development

THE PHILIPPINES’ primary presidential candidates for the May 2022 elections on Thursday vowed to pursue infrastructure development, with an opposition candidate planning to veer away from car-centric projects.

In a forum organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI), Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” G. Robredo said she would focus on infrastructure projects that would benefit commuters, transport workers, and bikers.

“We will prioritize building a nationwide active transport infrastructure, starting with the most traffic-congested areas,” she said. “Our goal is to make roads for people, not cars.”

Unlike the “car-centric” public budgeting of President Rodrigo R. Duterte, Ms. Robredo said she would prioritize “feasible and strategic” projects with “high impact.”

She aims to set up more bus rapid transit systems, protected bike lanes, bike racks, safe pathways and better bus stops, and prioritize railways. She added that she will initiate “better service contracts” for transport workers.

The opposition leader also plans to “map the points” where corruption enters the procurement process in infrastructure projects and be “more discerning” on which projects are actually needed and which ones are being used as cash cows by politicians.

HOUSES AND ICT

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” M. Domagoso, for his part, said socialized housing will be the focus of his infrastructure program.

“Whenever we make housing available and affordable for the poor, we give back human dignity to every family and beneficiary of the program,” said Mr. Domagoso, who vowed to work with Congress to reduce the taxes on petroleum and electricity.

“We must also build more and better health facilities, while addressing problems of malnutrition and mental health,” he added.

Senator Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson vowed to prioritize the full implementation of the country’s national broadband program, which seeks to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies throughout the country, particularly in remote areas.

The program that seeks to improve the overall internet speed in the country will create a “secure and reliable information and communications technology infrastructure system,” Mr. Lacson said.

The veteran senator’s pledge to improve the country’s ICT infrastructure resonates with his vow to promote “interoperability of all government processes” to avoid corruption, fully implement the law on universal healthcare system, and fast-track the implementation of the national I.D. system.

Mr. Lacson, who is known for his strong stance against state corruption, vowed to make infrastructure spending transparent by instituting a geotagging system containing all private projects.

Senator Emmanuel “Manny” D. Pacquiao, meanwhile, said he will push for the creation of “more skyways for Manila.”

He also wants to build a subway and bullet trains “from north to south” in the northern Luzon mainland.

The senator who hails from Mindanao in the south said he will also make sure to bring development in the central and southern parts of the country.

To fund more infrastructure projects, the government must boost non-tax revenues, said the senator who vowed to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign loans.

Mr. Pacquiao also promised to further cut corporate tax to 15%, which is currently at 25% based on a 2021 law that lessened the previous 30% rate.

Senator Christopher Lawrence T. Go said he will sustain and build on the gains of the Duterte government, promising to pursue an inter-island megabridge program and other projects in the administration’s infrastructure plan.

He also vowed to “invest heavily” in regional storage facilities to avoid food wastage.

The Philippine government had tweaked the so-called “Build, Build, Build” program several times in consideration of those projects with the best chance of undergoing construction or being completed before President Rodrigo R. Duterte steps down by end-June next year.

The infrastructure list was subjected to at least three revisions after undergoing feasibility reassessment. The National Economic and Development Authority board, chaired by the President, put the value of these projects at P4.13 trillion in mid-2020, lower than the P4.23-trillion cost estimate for the 2019 revised list. — Kyle Aristophere T. Davao Occidental, San Juan set up semis battle in FilBasket Subic tourney

Davao Occidental-Cocolife and San Juan-Go for Gold turned back their respective foes on Wednesday to set up a semifinal showdown in the FilBasket Subic Championship at the Subic Gym.

Drawing strength from John Wilson’s 23-point, eight-rebound effort, the Davao Occidental-Cocolife Tigers edged Burlington EOG Sports, 88-81, while the San Juan-Go for Gold Knights relied on Alvin Abundo 28-point eruption in smashing Medical Depot, 88-73.

The wins set Davao Occidental and San Juan in a knockout duel this weekend.

Both Davao and San Juan enjoyed twice-to-beat edge after finishing the elimination round as the second and third seeds, respectively, with identical 7-3 (win-loss) records in the eliminations and made sure to capitalize on it.

It was made sweeter by the fact that both the Tigers and the Knight avenged their elimination round losses to Burlington, 76-69, last week and Medical Depot, 69-67, last Nov. 3.

Now, the Tigers and Knights are on collision course for a chance to make the finals and emerge the first champion of this tournament that drew participation from 11 teams.

Keith Agovida and Robby Celiz provided some support for Davao Occidental and contributed 11 and 10 points while team captain Billy Ray Robles did most of the heavy lifting in defense with 14 boards.

Mr. Abundo, for his part, added 10 assists to his hot shooting game to lead San Juan, which dominated Meical Depot most of the game. — Joey Villar

1,297 new COVID-19 cases logged Thursday; further drop seen in Metro Manila

PHILIPPINE health authorities reported 1,297 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 2.82 million.

The death toll rose to 46,422 after 305 more patients died, while recoveries increased by 1,956 to 2.75 million, the Department of Health (DoH) said in a bulletin.

The agency said there were 23,158 active cases, 58.5% of which were mild, 4.1% were asymptomatic, 12.2% were severe, 19.96% were moderate, and 5.2% were critical.

It said 34% of intensive care units in the Philippines were occupied, while the rate for Metro Manila was 32%.

Of the 305 reported deaths, only 36 occurred in November, the DoH said.

Citing encoding problems, the agency said 44% of the deaths logged on Nov. 18 occurred in October, while 35% happened in September.

The Health department said 38 duplicates were removed from the tally, 36 of which were tagged as recoveries. It added that 278 recoveries were reclassified as deaths. Four laboratories failed to submit data on Nov 16.

The capital region had an average of 379 new daily cases from Nov. 11 to 17, lower than the 406 average from Nov. 4 to 10, OCTA Research fellow Fredegusto “Guido” P. David tweeted.

He said the average daily cases in Metro Manila is estimated to decrease to 200 by the end of the month as positivity rate is projected to hit 2% this week from 3% during the Nov. 10-16 period. — Kyle Aristophere T. Atienza

Australia greenlights full crowds for Aussie Open

MELBOURNE — The Australian Open tennis Grand Slam and Boxing Day cricket test in Melbourne will be able to welcome capacity crowds as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) restrictions ease in Victoria state, officials said on Thursday.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said from 11:59 p.m. (1259 GMT) on Thursday, there will no longer be any caps on gatherings in the state.

“Whether it’s 100,000 people at the MCG on Boxing Day or a smaller group of people standing up at the… local pub, this is the COVID-normal that every Victorian has built,” he said at a media briefing.

The eased restrictions will be welcomed by Australia’s major sports, which have taken significant hits to revenue due to crowd caps in Melbourne, the country’s second-largest city and Victoria state capital, through the pandemic.

The last Australian Open in February was limited to 30,000 people per day — about half of Melbourne Park’s usual capacity — before all fans were banned for five days due to a snap lockdown.

Last year’s Boxing Day test between Australia and India had crowds capped at 30,000 per day at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

The last Ashes test against England at the stadium in 2017 drew a crowd of more than 88,000 on Boxing Day alone.

Australia will face Joe Root’s England at the MCG from Dec. 26 during the upcoming five-test Ashes series.

Victoria has progressively eased restrictions as COVID-19 vaccination rates have soared in recent weeks. Authorities expect 90% of people in the state aged over 12 will be fully vaccinated by the end of the week. — Reuters

Robbie Ray, Corbin Burnes win Cy Young Awards

Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Robbie Ray was the runaway winner of the American League (AL) Cy Young Award and Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Corbin Burnes won a tight battle to claim the National League (NL) Cy Young Award, it was announced on Wednesday on the Major League Baseball (MLB) Network.

It is the first Cy Young Award for both hurlers.

Ray, 30, received 29 first-place votes and 207 points in balloting by 30 Baseball Writers Association of America voters.

Right-hander Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees received the other first-place vote and was a distant second with 123 points. Chicago White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn (48 points) was third.

In the NL, Burnes and second place Zack Wheeler of the Philadelphia Phillies each received 12 first-place votes. But Burnes (151 points) earned 14 second-place votes to nine for the right-hander Wheeler (141).

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Max Scherzer (113 points) received six first-place votes while placing third. Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (70) was fourth.

The 30-year-old Ray led the majors with 248 strikeouts. He also led the AL with a 2.48 ERA and went 13-7 in 32 starts.

“This is a huge honor and I’m very thankful,” Ray said in a live televised interview on the MLB Network following the announcement.

Ray is the first Toronto pitcher to win the award since the late Roy Halladay in 2003.

“I felt like everything was coming together at the perfect time,” Ray said of his big season.

Cole, 31, compiled a 16-8 record and 3.23 ERA with 243 strikeouts in 30 starts. His 16 wins were most in the AL.

The 34-year-old Lynn went 11-6 with a 2.84 ERA and 176 strikeouts in 28 starts. He only pitched 157 innings so he didn’t qualify to win the ERA title. — Reuters

Comelec gives Marcos extension to answer 1st disqualification case

THE PHILIPPINE poll body has granted the request of the late dictator’s son, Ferdinand R. “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., to give him more time to answer a petition challenging his presidential candidacy.

Mr. Marcos, a former senator, was given five more days to answer the petition filed by civic leaders seeking to cancel his candidacy papers for president, said Commission on Elections (Comelec) Spokesman James B. Jimenez on Thursday.

The poll body official made the statement hours after he refuted a claim by the camp of Mr. Marcos that his motion for extension had been approved by election authorities.

“Getting word that Comelec (Second Division) just now issued an extension in the cancellation case against former Senator Marcos,” Mr. Jimenez tweeted. “Five days.”

Since the fifth day falls on a Sunday, the last day would be Nov. 22, he added.

The original deadline for Mr. Marcos to submit a response was Nov. 16.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Jimenez said no decision had been promulgated by the poll body’s second division, which is composed of Commissioners Socorro B. Inting and Antonio T. Kho, Jr.

Mr. Inting was an appellate court justice, while Mr. Kho used to be a Justice undersecretary.

The first legal complaint against Mr. Marcos’ presidential run mentioned that he is ineligible to run for public office after a trial court convicted him in 1995 for failing to pay income taxes, a crime that bars the offender from any government post.

The complaint cited material misrepresentation in his candidacy papers when he wrote that he was eligible to hold public office.

The Comelec on Nov. 11 issued summons to Mr. Marcos, giving him an “inextendible period” of five days to file his answer to the plea.

Mr. Marcos filed an extension motion on Nov. 15, which was opposed by petitioners on Nov. 17.

The petitioners in their Nov. 17 motion asked the poll body to observe its own rules and uphold the mandatory and peremptory character of extendible periods, their legal counsel Theodore Te said in a statement on Thursday.

Mr. Marcos should not be allowed to submit controverting evidence since he did not comply with the poll body’s summons, the petitioners’ lawyer argued, citing election rules.

4TH PETITION

Meanwhile, Mr. Jimenez said separately in a media briefing that the late dictator’s son is now facing four legal complaints blocking his presidential candidacy.

The fourth petition seeks to declare Mr. Marcos as nuisance candidate, he said.

Martial law victims on Nov. 17 filed a disqualification case against Mr. Marcos, asserting that he is disqualified from holding any public office, to vote, and to participate in any election as he was found guilty beyond reasonable doubt of violating the National Internal Revenue Code.

A group of professionals filed a petition to intervene in the first legal complaint against the candidacy of Mr. Marcos, who held local posts before he was elected as a senator in 2010.

Muguruza defeats Kontaveit for first WTA Finals title

Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza claimed her first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals title on Wednesday, defeating Estonian Anett Kontaveit (6-3, 7-5) in Guadalajara, Mexico.

After trading breaks early in the match, the sixth seed chipped away at Kontaveit’s defenses to convert on break point in the seventh game, as the Estonian put up four double faults throughout the first set, got roughly half of her first serves in and struggled with errors.

Playing in the biggest match of her career, Kontaveit regained her composure in the second set, converting on break point in the seventh game.

But she could not retain the momentum as the two-time Grand Slam winner refused to give in, firing off a mighty forehand winner in the 10th game to level the score and keep the set going.

Muguruza, who won nearly 70% of her first-serve points across the entire match, again broke Kontaveit’s serve to clinch the affair, crumpling to the court with her hands over her face before greeting her opponent for a hug at the net.

“I remember when (WTA CEO Steve Simon) and I were in the US Open and he told me that Guadalajara could be a possibility for the Finals and I was like ‘Oh my God, I have to make it,’ and look now, we’re here,” said Muguruza, before hoisting the Billie Jean King Trophy in front of an adoring crowd.

“For me, it was a dream come true to play here.”

It was Muguruza’s fourth appearance at the season-ending finals and her first in the championship match. Her win gave Spain its first-ever WTA Finals title and will see her end the year as the world number three when the rankings are updated on Monday.

She won in Chicago last month and defeated Czech Barbora Krejčíková in March’s Dubai final for her biggest title since picking up her second major title at Wimbledon in 2017.

“This is just another proof that I think I’m actually in the best moment of my career,” Muguruza said, adding that she will be celebrating with some tequila.

“The experience I have now, the tennis, the way I handle myself, I think it’s actually much better than before.”

Krejčíková and her Czech partner Kateřina Siniaková remained undefeated at Guadalajara, the top seeds taking down Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Elise Mertens of Belgium (6-3, 6-4) in the final to win the doubles title. — Reuters
