Alert up vs fake Baguio veggies

BAGUIO CITY — Vegetable traders in La Trinidad, Benguet warned the public on Wednesday that volumes of potatoes and carrots being sold in the country are falsely labeled as highland produce from this city or Benguet.

The La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Areas, Inc. said these carrots and potatoes are sold in boxes deceptively marked, “A.B.C. Baguio,” but are not locally sourced. They have made their way to markets in Metro Manila, Sariaya in Quezon, and other places.

The group is appealing to the government to investigate this deception at the expense of their local farming industry, especially since they believe that the products were smuggled into Olongapo City on Nov. 10, 2023 and supposed to be confiscated by the Bureau of Customs.

It also stressed that highland farmers in the region do not mass produce carrots and potatoes. — Artemio A. Dumlao

Deadly clan war ends in Basilan

COTABATO CITY — Two feuding Yakan clans reconciled on Tuesday in a symbolic rite in Ungkaya Pukan town in Basilan, ending a six-year rido that had exacted more than 10 fatalities on each of the clans.

Rido is a generic term for clan war in most Moro and other southern vernacular.

Basilan Governor Hadjiman H. Salliman and Brig. Allan C. Nobleza, Bangsamoro police director, separately told reporters on Wednesday that the clans of Amil Palluh and Jhomie Majaran willingly sealed their peace covenant brokered by the Army’s 101st Infantry Brigade, the Basilan Provincial Police Office, and the multi-sector Provincial Peace and Order Council.

Hostilities between the two clans started in 2018 and have since displaced hundreds of Yakan villagers in Bohe Suyak and neighboring areas.

Brig. Gen. Alvin V. Luzon, army brigade commander, explained that the covenant signed by the two parties is a commitment to peaceful coexistence in their common domains in Ungkaya Pukan.

“To all who cooperated in settling their longtime rido, we in PRO-BAR are thankful,” Mr. Nobleza said.

Since 2016, the league of mayors, PPOC, PRO-BAR units, and the Army successfully resolved 42 clan wars in Basilan. — John Felix M. Unson

Senator urges public to conserve energy in view of El Niño

BW FILE PHOTO

A PHILIPPINE senator has called on the public to conserve energy ahead of the expected dry spells and drought associated with the El Niño weather condition in the next year.

“Because the El Niño phenomenon brings warmer than usual weather conditions, we can expect electricity consumption to rise substantially due to heightened demand. Thus, there is a need to ensure that the country has an ample supply of energy to meet the country’s electricity requirements,” Senator Sherwin T. Gatchalian said in a statement.

He said Filipinos are expected to experience water and energy supply concerns in the coming year as the country will likely face drought and dry spells.

Under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, which Mr. Gatchalian authored, the government is tasked to come up with plans to secure the stability of the country’s energy supply taking into account the effect of high prices of power on local markets and their environmental impact.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. had ordered the Department of Agriculture to study the potential effects of El Niño on the prices of agricultural products to allow agencies to prepare countermeasures.

The President tasked the interagency body on El Niño to come up with countermeasures to efficiently manage energy and food resources to brace for the impending periods of drought and dry spells.

“These practices not only save money but also ensure sustainability and reduce the environmental impact associated with heightened energy consumption,” said Mr. Gatchalian, who heads the Senate Ways and Means Committee. — John Victor D. Ordoñez

Bishop focuses on defense and rebound for Gin Kings

TONY BISHOP — PBA.PH

TONY BISHOP may not be as dominant as Justin Brownlee but he sure is helping Barangay Ginebra a great deal in getting things done with his strong defensive presence and tenacity under the boards.

Mr. Bishop, the import the Gin Kings tapped to step in after Mr. Brownlee faced doping issues post-Asian Games, led the defending PBA Commissioner’s Cup titlists to a 6-3 record going to the holiday break.

A former Meralco reinforcement, Mr. Bishop averaged 22.1 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.3 steals in nine games so far as the Gin Kings shared fourth and fifth positions with San Miguel Beer in the race for Top 4 and twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinals.

“Tony (Bishop) is a proven winner. He took a Meralco team that many thought were undermanned and led them all the way to finals so his credentials are unquestioned,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said on CNN Philippines’ Sports Desk.

“For us being star-studded, he doesn’t have to come out and put up dominating numbers for us. That’s one of the things we talked about. His focus is on rebounds and on the defensive side and the points that he gives us are actually bonus points. He’s exactly what we’re looking for,” he added.

Mr. Cone also lauded Mr. Bishop’s great work ethic.

“No one works harder than Tony (Bishop). He comes to practice everyday ready to work. He doesn’t sit out, doesn’t moan and groan about little aches and pains and just comes to work.

“The players see that, they appreciate it and they appreciate him as a teammate. I think that’s one of the keys to being a great import and driving a team,” the multi-titled mentor said.

The jury is still out on whether Mr. Bishop can bring the crowd darlings to the Promised Land like Mr. Brownlee before him. — Olmin Leyba

UP’s CJ Cansino and Francis Lopez apologize for mask grabbing incident of employee in Subic

UP team captain CJ Cansino (left) and UAAP Season 86 Rookie of the Year Francis Lopez (right) took full accountabilty of the unacceptable gesture. — FACEBOOK.COM/WEARETHEUAAP

CJ CANSINO and Francis Lopez apologized for an improper behavior during the recent holiday outing of the University of the Philippines (UP) men’s basketball team that went viral on social media.

In a recent excursion at a carnival in Subic as posted by Mr. Cansino in his Youtube vlog, one member of the Fighting Maroons was seen grabbing the mask of one of the workers during their “horror train” ride.

It was Mr. Lopez, he admitted.

Disappointed fans called out the team and expressed anger on what deemed as unnecessary act of considered role models by young fans and aspiring athletes to an employee who was just doing his role in a fun ride.

Mr. Cansino, as UP team captain, and University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 86 Rookie of the Year Francis Lopez took full accountabilty of the unacceptable gesture.

“…I take full responsibility for what happened,” said Mr. Cansino, who played his final hurrah with UP in a runner-up finish to De La Salle University this season.

Mr. Lopez also apologized for his act and promised to leave no stone unturned to right it and personally apologized to the carnival employee.

“I take full responsibility for what happened. I together with CJ (Cansino)  and the team have tried to reach out to the employee to apologize to him in person, but we have yet to track him down,” said Mr. Lopez.

“We will continue to look for him because I want to talk to him and let him know that it was never my intention to hurt anyone.”

Mr. Lopez also thanked the UAAP and UP fans for calling him out and giving him a chance to correct things with a vow to be better from here on.

“Thank you to the UP community for your support and for holding me accountable for my actions. On the court and off it, I promise to do my best not to let you down,” added Mr. Lopez. — John Bryan Ulanday

Liverpool goes top; United rallies to beat Aston Villa

MANCHESTER, England — Liverpool moved back to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 victory at struggling Burnley on Tuesday as Manchester United gave their fans some Boxing Day cheer by rallying to beat Aston Villa 3-2.

There was little festive joy for Newcastle United though as they suffered a surprise 3-1 home defeat by Nottingham Forest for whom Chris Wood scored a hat-trick.

Luton Town won the day’s big relegation battle — beating Sheffield United 3-2 thanks to two own goals — while form-team Bournemouth won again to reach the top half of the table.

Liverpool have now won all six of their Premier League games on Boxing Day under Juergen Klopp and while three points always looked likely against Burnley, it was not until substitute Diogo Jota’s 90th-minute goal that the points were sealed.

Darwin Nunez’s precision finish after six minutes gave Liverpool a flying start — his first Premier League goal for almost two months. Liverpool had goals by Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott ruled out after VAR checks and Mohamed Salah rattled the crossbar as the visitors dominated.

But 19th-placed Burnley rallied in the second half and there was a sense of relief for Mr. Klopp when a sweeping move ended with Mr. Jota slotting in from a tight angle late on.

Liverpool overtook Arsenal to move into first place with 42 points from 19 games. Arsenal are on 40 ahead of their London derby with West Ham United on Thursday.

On hitting the top, Mr. Klopp said: “42 points, that’s really pleasing, to be honest. That’s really cool because the first part of the season (is) done and it was absolutely alright what we did. Not perfect but it was alright.”

HOJLUND DELIGHT
Manchester United turned halftime boos into a fulltime ovation at Old Trafford as they came back from two goals down to hand third-placed Villa their first loss in 11 games in all competitions.

Alejandro Garnacho scored a brace to cancel out first-half goals from John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker before Rasmus Hojlund clinched the winner with his first Premier League goal in the 82nd minute.

Newcastle’s punishing schedule and injury list appears to be coming home to roost as they lost for the fifth time in seven games in all competitions.

Wood only managed five Premier League goals for Newcastle during his time on Tyneside but returned to haunt his old club and secure a huge three points for Forest.

Forest’s first win under new coach Nuno Espirito Santo lifted them to 16th in the standings on 17 points, five above the relegation zone, while Newcastle’s fourth defeat in their last five league games left them eighth on 29 points.

Newcastle took the lead in the 23rd minute when Alexander Isak stroked home a penalty he had earned.

Mr. Wood, who was loaned to Forest by Newcastle in January before being signed permanently, levelled just before the break with a close-range tap-in from Anthony Elanga’s pass.

A counter-attack in the 53rd minute ended with Wood dinking a superb finish over Martin Dubravka. The New Zealand international completed his hat-trick on the hour mark when he rounded Dubravka and slotted home.

In the basement battle Jack Robinson and Anis Ben Slimane scored own goals in the final 13 minutes as Sheffield United let a late lead slip to lose 3-2 at Luton, who are now just one point behind 17th-placed Everton.

Alfie Doughty had given Luton the lead but goals by Oli McBurnie and Anel Ahmedhodzic turned the game on its head.

But Robinson flicked a cross into his own net and Slimane deflected a shot past his goalkeeper.

Bournemouth moved into the top half as goals by Justin Kluivert, Dominic Solanke and Luis Sinisterra earned them a 3-0 victory over Fulham. — Reuters

INEOS’ Jim Ratcliffe could be forced to divest Manchester United stake under some conditions

MANCHESTER United said it could coerce Jim Ratcliffe under certain circumstances to divest his ownership in the British soccer club at least 18 months after the billionaire closes his acquisition of a 25% stake in the company.

It made the disclosure in a regulatory filing on Tuesday, but did not specify the circumstances.

Manchester United’s filing also said that for three years after the tycoon’s deal closes any potential sale of the club solicited by its American owners, the Glazer family, will need to fetch at least $33 per share for Mr. Ratcliffe.

A spokesperson for Manchester United did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment outside normal business hours.

On Sunday, Mr. Ratcliffe’s INEOS Group struck a deal to buy 25% interest in Manchester United at $33 per share. The deal valued the 20-time English champions at $6.3 billion including debt, a source familiar with the matter said.

The company’s shares closed up 3.4% on Tuesday, as the agreement cleared months of uncertainty over a deal that fans and investors hoped would revitalize the British soccer club.

Under the deal, INEOS will also manage Manchester United’s soccer operations after the Glazer family’s long-time ownership came under fire for the club’s poor performance over the past decade.

Manchester United’s stock has surged about 52% after the Glazers announced in November last year that they were exploring strategic options, including a sale, for the club.

Since former manager Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013, the club has seen five permanent managers and three caretakers but has failed to recapture its glory days, winning just four trophies in 11 years.

Mr. Ratcliffe’s INEOS Sport owns France’s OGC Nice, which stands second in Ligue 1 only behind Paris Saint-Germain, majority-owned by investment fund Qatar Sports Investments.

INEOS also owns FC Lausanne-Sport, which is in the relegation-threatened 10th position in the Swiss Super League.

Manchester United has been knocked out of European competitions and are eighth in the Premier League table despite heavy investments over the past several years to bring in popular players. — Reuters

Pistons fall to Nets, set NBA record with 27th straight loss

CAMERON Johnson scored 24 points and the visiting Brooklyn Nets beat the Pistons 118-112 on Tuesday night as Detroit set a single-season NBA record with its 27th consecutive loss.

The Pistons tied the record with a 126-115 setback against Brooklyn on Saturday.

Detroit’s 27-game losing streak tops the runs of futility of the 2010-11 Cleveland Cavaliers and 2013-14 Philadelphia 76ers, who each lost 26 straight.

Philadelphia holds the longest losing streak of all-time, which spanned over the course of two seasons. The 76ers dropped 28 straight between the end of the 2014-15 season and the beginning of the 2015-16 campaign. The Pistons can match that skid when they visit the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

Mikal Bridges had 21 points and Cam Thomas tossed in 17 for Brooklyn on Tuesday. Nic Claxton and Day’Ron Sharpe each added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cade Cunningham carried the Pistons with 41 points, 37 in the second half. Bojan Bogdanovic had 23 points, Alec Burks added 15 and Jalen Duren chipped in 12 to go along with 15 rebounds.

The Pistons raced to a 22-8 lead just over six minutes into the first quarter, but the Nets pulled within six at 31-25 by the end of the frame.

The Nets later used a 9-0 run to take a 42-38 lead.

Mr. Johnson scored Brooklyn’s last five points of the first half as the Nets carried a 61-54 lead into the locker room. Mr. Johnson also scored the first bucket of the third quarter. His next basket, with 8:35 remaining in the third, gave Brooklyn an 11-point advantage.

Detroit then reeled off 11 straight points, with nine coming from Mr. Cunningham, to tie it. Mr. Johnson stopped that run with a 3-pointer.

Brooklyn’s lead was eight entering the final minute of the third, but the Pistons finished the period with a 7-2 spurt and trailed 88-85 entering the fourth.

Detroit had a 12-2 run early in the fourth to take a 97-92 lead with 8:10 to go.

The Nets then had a 13-0 outburst, including six points from Mr. Bridges, to grab an eight-point lead. Cunningham’s three-point play with 1:54 left cut Brooklyn’s lead to 109-106. Mr. Johnson answered with a 3-pointer.

Mr. Cunningham made two layups, but Dorian Finney-Smith drained a corner 3 to make it 115-110.

Following a missed 3-point try from Mr. Burks, Mr. Bridges made two victory-sealing free throws. — Reuters

Record number of pro golfers earned $1M in 2023

THE INFLUX of cash into men’s professional golf has resulted in a record number of players reaching the $1 million earnings mark in 2023.

All 49 members of LIV Golf to start in at least six events this past season earned more than $1 million.

The Saudi-funded league completed its second season with Talor Gooch as its individual champion. Gooch wrapped up the year $35.3 million richer thanks in part to an $18 million bonus for first place in the standings.

The PGA Tour, which is now in negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, sought to keep up with the increase in prize purses LIV Golf was able to offer by introducing much higher purses for designated events, or “signature events” as they’ll be called going forward.

That helped 139 PGA Tour players make at least $1 million in the 2022-23 season, meaning 188 male golfers earned at least that much this year. (The PGA Tour season included the fall of 2022 and all of 2023 in advance of returning to calendar-year seasons.)

Scottie Scheffler racked up $21,014,342 over 23 events played on the PGA Tour. The designated events, including a $4.5 million payday for winning The Players Championship, helped him break his own single-season record of $14.04 million from 2021-22. — Reuters

World Golf Ranking updates points system for limited-field events in 2024

TOP FINISHERS at limited-field events on eligible tours will earn more points next year in the Official World Golf Ranking, its governing board announced Thursday.

At the same time, players finishing in the bottom 15 percent of events for fields of 80 players or less that do not have a cut will no longer receive rankings points.

The same is true in match-play events, with players losing their first-round match or dropping all matches in a pool format no longer earning points.

The change, which goes into effect on Jan. 1, will impact the PGA Tour’s eight signature events next year. For example, the winner would earn about 21 percent of an event’s total rankings points, an increase from the current 17-18 percent.

A second change, viewed as an enhancement, rewards players winning more than once within a 52-week period on any eligible tour. Two wins is worth a 60 percent bonus, and three or more times is a 70 percent benefit. The points bonus, capped at a total of four points, is meant to allow top-performing players a chance to move up the rankings faster. Rookie Ludvig Aberg, who won on the DP World Tour shortly after turning pro and then the PGA Tour’s RSM Classic in November, would have benefited from the new points distribution.

“Based on extensive analysis following the changes implemented in August 2022, we recognized these two opportunities to further enhance the OWGR and to accurately evaluate performances of the world’s participating players on all eligible Tours,” OWGR chairman Peter Dawson said in a statement. “Adjustments to the Ranking are made after careful consideration, and we are confident that today’s updates will better position the OWGR for the future.” — Reuters
