Indonesia leans on Dutch-born squad in quest for WC return

HONG KONG — Indonesia’s challenge for a first World Cup (WC) appearance in almost 90 years takes on a distinctly Dutch flavor when Shin Tae-yong’s side face Saudi Arabia on Thursday hoping to ignite dreams of a long-awaited return to the game’s greatest stage.

Not since their debut in 1938 has the archipelago, then known as the Dutch East Indies, appeared at a World Cup but, with the finals growing to 48 nations in 2036, efforts to return have quickly gathered momentum.

Nine players in the squad that defeated the Philippines at a sold-out Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta in June were born in the Netherlands, from whom Indonesia gained independence in 1949. — Reuters

Top seeds Sinner, Swiatek ease into quarterfinals

NEW YORK — Top seeds Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek continued to blaze a trail through the US Open draws on Monday, easing into the quarterfinals of a tournament marked by almost daily upsets with a minimum of fuss.

Mr. Sinner disappointed a partisan crowd with a 7-6(3) 7-6(5) 6-1 win over Tommy Paul in an entertaining fourth-round tie after Ms. Swiatek had beaten Liudmila Samsonova 6-4 6-1 in a more muted atmosphere on the main Arthur Ashe Stadium showcourt.

Italian Mr. Sinner barely got a look at Mr. Paul’s serve until the third set but produced his best tennis when it mattered to subdue the effervescent American and move on to a mouth-watering last-eight meeting with 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev.

Russian Mr. Medvedev had earlier brushed aside a delay caused by a fire alarm in the building where the Hawkeye line-calling system is housed to pummel Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-0 6-1 6-3.

Like Mr. Medvedev, Ms. Swiatek is the only former singles champion left in her draw and the Pole hit her impressive stride in a comfortable win over Ms. Samsonova before warning she was only going to improve. American fans on Arthur Ashe earlier did have a success to cheer on their Labor Day holiday as Jessica Pegula efficiently disposed of Diana Shnaider 6-4 6-2 to reach the last eight without dropping a set.

The sixth seed, who missed the French Open due to injury but triumphed at a US Open tune-up event in Canada last month, said she felt her game was trending in the right direction. Ms. Pegula has reached the quarterfinals of all four Grand Slams but never gone further and her path to the semis this week is blocked by the imposing figure of world number one Ms. Swiatek.

The only minor surprise on the eighth day of the championships came when Karolina Muchova, a semifinalist here last year, ousted Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-3.

Unseeded after surgery on a wrist injury sustained at last year’s US Open sidelined her for 10 months, the Czech showed her quality to outclass Ms. Paolini, who had reached the finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

Ms. Muchova will next face Beatriz Haddad Maia after the Brazilian produced 40 winners to send former world number one Caroline Wozniacki packing 6-2 3-6 6-3. — Reuters

NCAA kickstarts in centennial season with men’s basketball

Games Saturday
(MOA Arena)
12 p.m. — Opening Ceremonies
2:30 p.m. — San Beda vs LPU
5 p.m. — Mapua vs CSB

THE NATIONAL Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will celebrate its centennial season starting with its centerpiece basketball tournament that features host Lyceum of the Philippines (LPU) clashing with defending champion San Beda and title contenders Mapua against College of St. Benilde (CSB) colliding Saturday at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.

“As the youngest member of the NCAA, it’s our pride and honor at LPU to be host of Season 100,” said this year’s league president Roberto Laurel during yesterday’s media launch at the MOA Arena.

“Very prestigious para sa amin ito especially since the NCAA is now 100 years old, it only comes once in a century,” he added.

NCAA Management Committee Chair Herc Callanta, for his part, said they will enshrine this year the league’s 100 greatest achievers, not just in basketball, but all sports.

“Our opening ceremony would highlight notable achievers of the NCAA year 2000 upwards. For you to be enshrined to the 100 greatest athletes of the NCAA, you must have participated in the NCAA not later than that year,” he said.

It marked a historic time for the grand old league, which has existed and survived even the test of time, regardless of some wars and even infamous catastrophes like the COVID-19 pandemic.

And the reason for the NCAA’s longevity has been solely sourced from young student athletes dreaming big dreams.

This year, everything will start from basketball with San Beda drawing most of the attention after pulling off a championship to remember.

“Our goal is to try to win it again,” said San Beda coach Yuri Escueta, who steered his young Lions to the title a season ago when nobody expected it.

LPU, being te host, is expected to likewise go all out too for that title the school had dreamed of.

“Although it will not be easy, we’ll do our best to make the school proud,” said LPU mentor Gilbert Malabanan.

Also emerging as title contenders are last year’s runner up Mapua, which will practically bring back most of the core from a season back including reigning Most Valuable Player Clint Escamis, and College of St. Benilde mentored by Charles Tiu.

“We’ll try again this year,” said Mapua coach Randy Alcantara.

Meanwhile, Letran skipper Pao Javellonar was meted by the league a three-game suspension for playing in a league outside the NCAA with a PBA team playing on it.

Letran’s athletic moderator Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, said it is currently on appeal.

Mr. Callanta also announced it will no longer implement allowing its students license to play in the pros starting June 30.

“We are concerned in preserving the amateur status the NCAA would like to promote,” he said. — John Bryan Ulanday

Steely disposition

Prior to the start of the final round of the Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler appeared to have the red carpet already rolled out for him. Carrying a five-shot lead and armed with confidence borne of six wins and seven other Top 10 finishes in 17 starts for the year, he knew a rostrum berth was his to lose. Far be it from him, as the best finisher in the sport, to waste the opportunity to become only the fourth player ever to claim seven victories along with a major title in a single season. The fact that it came with a hefty $25 million paycheck was not lost on him, either.

Fast forward eight holes, and the advantage, which Scheffler actually padded to seven after two, was reduced to two. Whatever conviction he had seemed frayed by three bogeys in four holes, and thoughts of his monumental collapse in 2022 naturally entered his mind. Georgia’s East Lake Golf Course, home to the signature event of the United States Professional Golfer’s Association Tour, once again looked to be a challenge instead of fodder for low scores. Fortunately, caddie Teddy Scott knew exactly what to tell him, and the words of encouragement proved to be what he needed to ultimately prevail.

Needless to say, Scheffler was effusive in his praise of his on-course partner as he surveyed his accomplishment. “Teddy has always been my biggest supporter. I think the results speak for themselves after he was able to pick up my bag and start helping me. He really is a huge part of the team. I don’t know if I’d be able to do any of this without him on my bag. We’ve got a great relationship.” And he’s right. Since they got together in November 2021, he has taken the Tour by storm: three straight Player of the Year awards backstopped by 15 triumphs, including at the 2024 Paris Games.

Which, in a nutshell, speaks to Scheffler’s steely disposition. He has learned — or, to be precise, learned to learn — from experience, certainly the only way to bear the brunt of outsized expectations and then live up to them. He didn’t simply manage to put together one of the most remarkable seasons in the annals of golf; his “record” for the ages includes a false arrest and a welcome addition to the family. That he continued to be at his finest through all the emotional baggage speaks to his unique skill set and extraordinary resolve.

In the post-mortem, Scheffler was asked to expound on his experience. “If you can describe it in words, more power to you,” he countered, “because I don’t think I can.” He doesn’t need to, of course. As he has shown time and time again, his playing can do all the talking.

Cathay Pacific halts flights for A350 checks as other airlines await guidance

HONG KONG’s Cathay Pacific Airways is inspecting all of its Airbus A350 jets after the in-flight failure of an engine part on Monday, but other airlines have not yet been issued instructions to examine similar engines, carriers said.

Cathay Pacific canceled 24 return flights through the end of Wednesday to give it time to inspect its fleet of 48 Rolls-Royce powered A350s after a part failed on one of its A350-1000 widebody planes minutes after take-off from Hong Kong.

Data from flight tracking service FlightRadar24 showed other major operators of the A350-1000 and the smaller, more popular A350-900 appeared to be flying their aircraft normally on Tuesday.

Tokyo-based Japan Airlines (JAL), which has five A350-1000s that are all less than a year old, said it had asked Rolls-Royce for more information and had not stopped A350 flights in the meantime.

“If the engine manufacturer takes any further action, we will respond accordingly,” a JAL spokesperson said.

Rolls-Royce had not yet issued a directive to airlines regarding possible inspections, according to an industry source who was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The engine manufacturer said in a statement it was aware of the incident and was committed to working closely with Cathay Pacific, Airbus and authorities conducting an investigation.

Cathay Pacific has not specified which engine component failed, but the carrier said it was the “first of its type to suffer such failure on any A350 aircraft worldwide.”

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters the incident involved a problem with a fuel nozzle inside a XWB-97 engine, the Rolls-Royce model used on the A350-1000.

Experts say such problems are rare but, barring a deeper flaw, generally raise fewer alarms than the failure of one of the major rotating parts such as a turbine blade. However, any widespread further inspections could be disruptive to airlines.

Airbus said in a statement it was in contact with Rolls-Royce and Cathay Pacific and offering “full technical support.”

‘PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE’
Taiwan’s China Airlines, which operates 15 A350-900s but no A350-1000s, said its fleet did not use the affected engines, so its operations would not be impacted.

“The company will continue to pay attention to the instructions of the original manufacturer and take the initiative to arrange for testing operations to ensure the safety of aircraft operations,” it said in a statement.

Although the part failure occurred on one of its 18 A350-1000 jets, Cathay Pacific said it was also inspecting its 30 A350-900s as a “precautionary measure.”

The airline said it had “identified a number of the same engine components that need to be replaced” but did not say on which model aircraft.

There are around 88 A350-1000 jets in operation worldwide, according to Swiss aviation intelligence provider ch-aviation.

The top six operators are Qatar Airways with 24 planes, British Airways with 18, Cathay Pacific with 18, Virgin Atlantic with 12 and Etihad Airways and JAL with five each.

Qatar Airways, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Etihad did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Cathay Pacific shares slipped as much as 0.9% on Tuesday.

The flight legs it has canceled between Hong Kong and Sydney, Osaka, Tokyo, Taipei, Bangkok and Singapore through the end of Wednesday represent around 2.4% of the number it was scheduled to run per week in September, according to Cirium flight schedule data.

Trump says he had ‘every right’ to interfere in 2020 election

GAGE SKIDMORE- WIKIMEDIA.ORG

WASHINGTON — Republican former US President Donald Trump, who faces federal and state charges accusing him of trying to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democratic President Joseph R. Biden, insists he had “every right” to interfere in that election.

“Whoever heard you get indicted for interfering with a presidential election where you have every right to do it?” Mr. Trump said in a Fox News interview that aired on Sunday.

A federal indictment accuses Mr. Trump of defrauding the US by attempting to prevent Congress from certifying Mr. Biden’s victory and deprive voters of their right to a fair election. He faced a revised federal indictment last month accusing him of illegally trying to overturn his 2020 election loss.

Mr. Trump’s supporters stormed the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 election results after weeks of false claims by Mr. Trump that he had won.

Mr. Trump faces similar charges in Fulton County, Georgia, where he was also charged with racketeering, which is used to target members of organized crime groups and carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

That case, which is on hold while a state appeals court weighs the district attorney’s role, stems from a Jan. 2, 2021, phone call in which Mr. Trump urged Georgia’s top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to “find” enough votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state. Mr. Raffensperger declined to do so.

Mr. Trump, who is the current Republican candidate for president, has not said whether he would unconditionally accept the results of the Nov. 5 election if his Democratic rival, US Vice-President Kamala Harris, wins.

In a statement on Monday, Ms. Harris’ campaign said Mr. Trump’s latest comments to Fox News and his previous remarks “make it clear that he believes he is above the law.”

“Now, Trump is claiming he had ‘every right’ to interfere in the 2020 election. He did not,” a Harris campaign spokesperson said in the statement. — Reuters

New Zealand government says China remains a ‘complex intelligence concern’

REUTERS

WELLINGTON — New Zealand said on Tuesday that “China remains a complex intelligence concern,” but there are other states that undertake malicious activity in the country.

“A small number of illiberal foreign states engage in foreign interference against New Zealand as a tool for advancing their interests abroad,” the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) said in its yearly report into the country’s threat environment.

It noted it can be difficult to draw conclusive links between the interference activity and the foreign state.

“New Zealand is not alone in facing the threat of foreign interference. It is a challenge, countries face globally, including in our region, as illiberal states try to take advantage of others’ size or openness,” it said.

The report, titled “New Zealand’s Security Threat Environment,” is released as part of a government shift to better inform New Zealanders about risks the country is facing, and comes as the government grapples with how to respond to a more complicated geopolitical environment.

Director-General of Security Andrew Hampton said the assessment is about being as upfront as we can about the reality of national security threats but not to alarm anyone.

The report added that strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific has for the past decade or so been largely framed as being between China and New Zealand and its traditional security partners but more recently it is becoming one where there are several centers of power and influence and include a range of countries including those with which New Zealand is growing its relationships such as India or those in Southeast Asia. — Reuters

Zelensky says West should permit long-range attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — UKRAINIAN PRESIDENTIAL PRESS SERVICE/HANDOUT VIA REUTERS

PRESIDENT Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday Ukraine’s Western allies should not only allow their weapons to be used for strikes deep inside Russia, but also supply Kyiv with more of the arms themselves.

Ukraine has long urged partners to allow it to fire Western weapons at targets far into enemy territory, and those calls have grown louder as Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian energy installations, other infrastructure and residential buildings intensify.

After a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday, Mr. Zelensky said Kyiv was “more positive” about the prospects of getting such permission.

“For today, only to allow — is also not enough,” he said, adding that allies should ensure deliveries of weapons to use for such attacks. “We didn’t get everything we would like to use,” Mr. Zelensky added.

Zelensky added that some agreements on supplies had not been fulfilled.

He said he discussed with Mr. Schoof strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses. He mentioned there were “some ideas” on how to increase the fleet of F-16 jets donated by allies, one of which was lost in a crash in Ukraine last week.

“We will keep providing air defense equipment, and F-16s, and funding for munitions,” Mr. Schoof said.

Mr. Schoof added that the Netherlands would provide Ukraine with around 200 million euros ($221.4 million) in support to repair energy infrastructure and for humanitarian assistance.

The Netherlands will deliver refurbished gas turbines with a total value of 29.5 million euros and has allocated 45 million euros for repairing energy infrastructure, the Dutch foreign ministry said in a statement.

The money comes from a 400-million-euro aid fund the Dutch government pledged to Ukraine earlier this year.

Mr. Zelensky also commented on the situation on front lines, saying that Ukraine’s cross-border incursion into Russia’s western region of Kursk was moving “according to the plan.”

He added that Ukraine believed the operation could help to ease pressure on the Pokrovsk front in Ukraine’s east, where Russia has accelerated its advances.

So far, he said, the situation there remained difficult. — Reuters

Venezuela’s newest news agency says AI anchors protect reporters amid government crackdown

Artificial Intelligence words are seen in this illustration taken March 31, 2023. — REUTERS/DADO RUVIC/ILLUSTRATION/FILE PHOTO

ONE of Venezuela’s newest news anchors sits on a stool, dressed in a flannel shirt and chinos as he delivers the day’s headlines.

He goes by “El Pana,” Venezuelan slang for “friend.”

Only, he’s not real.

El Pana, and his colleague “La Chama,” or “The Girl,” are generated using artificial intelligence(AI), though they look, sound and move realistically.

They were created as part of an initiative dubbed “Operation Retweet” by Colombia-based organization Connectas, led by director Carlos Huertas, to publish news from a dozen independent media outlets in Venezuela and in the process protect reporters as the government has launched a crackdown on journalists and protesters.

“We decided to use artificial intelligence to be the ‘face’ of the information we’re publishing,” Mr. Huertas said in an interview, “because our colleagues who are still out doing their jobs are facing much more risk.”

At least 10 journalists have been arrested since mid-June and eight remain imprisoned on charges including terrorism, according to Reporters Without Borders.

“Here, using artificial intelligence is… almost like a mix between technology and journalism,” Mr. Huertas said, explaining the project looked to “circumvent the persecution and increasing repression” from the government as there would be no one who could face arrest.

The country’s opposition and human rights groups have said recent arrests of protesters, opposition figures and journalists are part of a government crackdown meant to quiet a sometimes violent, month-long election dispute.

Venezuela’s communications ministry did not respond to a request for comment about the AI journalism initiative. No official has responded to repeated requests for comment by Reuters about the arrests of journalists in recent weeks.

Both the opposition and President Nicolas Maduro claim victory in the July 28 election.

Mr. Maduro, in power since 2013, is backed by the supreme court and the electoral authority, which has not published full vote tallies because of what it says was a cyberattack.

The opposition has shared what it says are more than 80% of vote tallies, showing a resounding win for its candidate Edmundo Gonzalez. Some international observers and many Western countries have said election conditions were unfair and demanded full tallies.

Protests since the vote have led to at least 27 deaths and 2,400 arrests, and detentions of opposition figures and protesters have continued as part of the government’s “Operation Knock Knock.”

Mr. Maduro and his administration have called protesters fascists and said they are inciting hate at the behest of countries like the United States, which Washington denies. — Reuters

Luzon still experiencing unfavorable weather as Enteng exits PAR

PHILIPPINE STAR/MIGUEL DE GUZMAN

Tropical Storm Enteng still affects many parts of Luzon, even as it moves away from the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In a press briefing by PAGASA on Tuesday, it was reported that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #2 is still in effect for the western part of Ilocos Norte and the northern part of Ilocos Sur.

Areas under Signal #2 could experience wind speeds of 62 to 88 km/h within 24 hours, potentially causing minor to moderate damage to old, dilapidated buildings and structures made of lightweight materials.

Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 is in effect for other parts of Luzon, including the rest of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, the northern portion of La Union and Benguet, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, and the western portion of Cagayan, including Fuga and Dalupiri Islands.

Wind speeds in these areas are expected to range from 36 to 61 km/h within the next 24 hours, potentially leading to minimal to minor damage to houses made from lightweight materials.

As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Tropical Storm “Enteng” is located 100 km west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, moving westward at 25 km/h toward mainland China.

Enteng is expected to exit PAR on Wednesday morning, but it will still have an effect the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which may bring heavy rains to the Western section of the country in the following days.

“Affected po tayo ng Southwest Monsoon so kahit palayo na si Enteng… ito yung maaring magpaulan sa Western section [We are affected by the Southwest Monsoon, so even though Enteng is moving away, it may still bring rain to the western section],” Rosalie Pagulayan, weather specialist of the PAGASA said in an interview.

PAGASA has issued a “yellow rainfall warning” for Zambales and Bataan on Tuesday, anticipating heavy rains and potential flooding in low-lying areas.

Meanwhile, light to moderate rain with occasional heavy downpours is expected over the next 3 hours in several areas of Luzon, including Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Laguna, Batangas, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Rizal, and Cavite.

Residents in elevated and mountainous areas and flood-prone areas are advised to be cautious due to the high risk of landslides and flooding, according to PAGASA.

Death Toll

At least 13 people have lost their lives, mostly due to landslides and floods triggered by heavy rains from Tropical Storm Enteng (Yagi) and the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), according to a report from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

Rizal Province reported the highest number of deaths with eight, while Bicol recorded three, and Cebu had two.

One of the areas hardest hit was Antipolo City, where seven people have been confirmed dead, according to the report from Antipolo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

The Antipolo CDRRMO report stated on Monday that three people have died from drowning and four others have died in landslides.

The fatalities include two siblings, aged 15 and 12, and a 27-year-old pregnant woman who was due to give birth this month.

The three were all buried in a landslide in two separate homes along Daang Pari Road in Barangay San Jose, an area deemed a “danger zone.”

Meanwhile, nearly 38,000 families were affected by the heavy rains and flooding caused by Tropical Storm Enteng and Southwest Monsoon, according to the situational report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday

About 40,000 individuals took shelter in 218 evacuation centers across regions including NCR, Region III, CALABARZON, Region V, Region VII, and Region VIII.

The NDRRMC also reported that 157 areas remain inundated, primarily in CALABARZON, Region V, Region VII, and NCR.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and local governments are distributing family food packs to these affected regions, reaching at least 12,000 families.Edg Adrian A. Eva

#DapatAllMagWhoscall: Gogolook launches inclusive digital life safety campaign in PH

Photo shows Gogolook COO Manwoo Joo, Scam Watch Pilipinas Co-Founder Jocel de Guzman, CICC Executive Director Usec. Alexander Ramos, Gogolook SEA Regional Director and Country Head Mel Migriño, Cyber Batallion of Philippine Army Representative Maj. Dave L. Estorninos, and GoTyme Co-Albert Tinio during the #DapatAllMagWhoscall Campaign Launch.

Gogolook, the leading global TrustTech company, launched #DapatAllMagWhoscall, a nationwide campaign to empower Filipinos against online scams by advocating safe online practices through its anti-scam app Whoscall.

Gogolook Chief Operating Officer (COO) Manwoo Joo said the Whoscall app can empower Filipinos to enjoy a safe digital life.

“We are celebrating the successful first year of Whoscall in PH by introducing the #DapatAllMagWhoscall campaign because we believe that everyone should be able to freely use the internet and other digital services without the fear of scams or other forms of fraud,” Mr. Joo said.

Gogolook Southeast Asia Regional Director and Country Representative Mel Migriño outlined the #DapatAllMagWhoscall campaign’s three key objectives: to educate Filipinos about online scams, foster a community of digital safety advocates, and protect individuals from unknown callers.

“The #DapatAllMagWhoscall campaign promotes an inclusive personal cybersecurity mindset, encouraging Filipinos to adopt safe online behaviors. With this, we are encouraging ‘Dapat All’ (everyone) to be aware of personal online safety,” Ms. Migriño said.

The Whoscall app offers four key features: caller and message identification, integration with other messaging apps such as Viber and WhatsApp, safe browsing with a Web Checker, and enhanced data security with ID Security. These features are available for free by downloading the app from the Apple Store for iOS users and the Play Store for Android users.

Furthermore, for enhanced and convenient protection, users can avail themselves of Whoscall Premium, which includes benefits such as auto-updated number database, an automatic URL scanner, auto-spam call blocking, and an ad-free experience.

Ms. Migriño also highlighted that neglecting online safety is one of the most common mistakes Filipinos make when navigating the digital landscape.

“While enhancing our connectivity is important, securing our data online is way more crucial. Scammers are also operating online, and unsecured digital accounts can leave individuals vulnerable to scams,” Ms. Migriño said.

Gogolook Co-Founder and CEO Jeff Kuo earlier committed to strengthening Filipinos’ personal cybersecurity through its TrustTech product, the Whoscall app. “Gogolook is dedicated to protecting users from scams and fraud through innovative technology to make Internet access a worry-free experience for all,” Mr. Kuo said.

In addition, Gogolook also celebrated Whoscall’s first year in the country by recognizing its pioneer anti-scam advocacy partners in the Philippines during the #DapatAllMagWhoscall campaign launch, such as the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), Cyber Battalion of the Philippine Army, GoTyme Bank, and Scam Watch Pilipinas.
